Week 34 - University of Bergen
I Week 34, 2014 Head of department has a few thoughts for you! Unfortunately, the weather in Bergen as it has returned to its usual. Thus we have the joy of noticing that the department activities are also back to their usual pace. Fadderuke and semester start are far behind us, and the usual lectures are again in full swing. Next Thursday there will be an interesting lecture in the Horizon series - Cooperation in the Climate Change Game. I hope many of you have the chance to join this lecture. Otherwise, I would like to encourage students and employees to send their contributions to the Photo of the Week section. This is a nice opportunity to get a glimpse of the activities taking place at our department which otherwise you would perhaps never stumble across. This week’s contribution covers categories such as physics, biology, engineering and the art of picture taking in a groundbreaking manner, but contributions covering fewer categories will also be appreciated. Have a great weekend, Øyvind Photo of the Week: Microscopic image of Haematococcus pluvialis, a green algae which lives in fresh water. The algae in the picture are colour coded for fluorescence life time. The photo was sold at the Alversund gallery, a curious proof that one has managed to produce research and art simultaneously. The picture was taken by Arne Skodvin Kristoffersen. IFT-POSTEN II Invitation to "HES at the Lab” in the fall 2014 The Health, Environment, Safety (HES) section of the Staff and Organization Department and Property Department of University of Bergen (UoB) invite the employees to a programme entitled HES at the lab. The prioritized audiences for this programme are all personnel working in laboratories. The newly employed are particularly encouraged to participate in these courses. Some of the courses are also of interest to the PhD and Master students. The programme consists of eight half or whole day courses, and application deadline is September 10 th . Best regards, Property Department An assemblage of the most gifted minds in the world were all posed the following question: “What is 2 + 2 ?” The engineer whips out his calculator, taps away at it for a while and finally announces “3.99″. The physicist consults his technical references, sets up the problem on his computer, and announces “it lies between 3.98 and 4.02″. The mathematician cogitates for a while, oblivious to the rest of the world, then announces: “I don’t know what the answer is, but I can prove an answer exists!”. The philosopher strokes his chin for several days, finally asking: “But what do you mean by 2 + 2?” Finally the accountant closes all the doors and windows, looks around carefully then asks “What do you want the answer to be?” H-bar H-bar is open every Friday from 19.00 - 01.00. On Tuesdays, every evennumbered week, there are organized pub-lectures at H-bar. More info at H-bar’s facebook page. H-bar is run by IFT’s Fagutvalget, and is primarily aimed at department’s students – but employees are also welcome! IFT-POSTEN IV Postdoctor of the Week Name: José Carlos Reyes Guerrero Supervisors: Lars Egil Helseth (UiB) and Tomasz Ciamulski (WiSub AS) You have probably spotted him walking down the corridors of the Physics department, always with a boyish smile and glimmer in his eyes, always looking for a pleasant exchange of words. "Warrior King" José Carlos enjoys his days in Norway. José Carlos was born in the province of Córdoba and grew up in a small and charming town called Aguilar de la Frontera in the south part of Spain. Upon finishing high-school in his hometown, he completed a master’s degree in telecommunications and electronics in the city of Seville. He took his PhD at the University of Cádiz, where he focused on wireless signal propagation modelling and communications. In March 2014 he moved to Bergen, in order to work as a PostDoc researcher at IFT. His research project is on communication technology underwater, primarily with focus on electromagnetic propagation and wireless communication subsea at microwave frequencies. His research position is partly financed by UoB, and partly by WiSub AS, a young Bergen-based company conducting an R&D project entitled “microwavebased communication for high performance wet-mate subsea connectors”. The project is supported by Research Council of Norway, as part of Petromaks2. While José Carlos was doing his PhD, he got the chance to go on research stays to, among others, the University of Santiago in Chile, the University of Zagreb in Croatia, and the NTNU in Trondheim. During those periods, he developed one new social passion, which is travelling and meeting locals all over the world. Nowadays, he likes to hang out with Norwegians, although he claims that it is not easy to get to know them in the beginning: - it requires time and patience, but when a Norwegian becomes your friend, he/she will definitely be a great and honest friend of you. It works very different in Spain, I really love the Norwegian way. José Carlos loves the working environment at UoB, and he loves Bergen both as a city and a sociocultural meeting point. In his free time, he is very much outdoors with new friends and acquaintances; he walks up the hills and forests, fishes, swims, jogs, cycles, and plays football. Sometimes, he takes the opportunity to discover the fjords and mountains outside Bergen region, and he is also taking classes in Norwegian language. This fall he is learning to dance salsa, as well as cross-country skiing. Now he is having so much fun here in Norway that he would very much like to stay longer. May 2014, Temperature: 38 degrees; at the main door at one of the José Carlos has two younger brothers. The youngmost popular events in Córdoba: “La Feria de Córdoba!” est of them, Francisco, just finished his degree in aeronautical engineering in Madrid, and the other one, Leonardo, lives in Manchester and works as a Mathematics teacher at a high-school. His parents still live in his hometown Aguilar de la Frontera, in the province of Córdoba, in the autonomous region of Andalucía in southern Spain. Andalucía comes from the Arabic name Al-Andalus, which means the land of the vandals. The Vandal King Geiserik is best known for plundering Rome in 455 a.d, and the Vandals greatly contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire. Guerrero also means ”warrior”, while Reyes may mean “kings” (plural) or “royal”. Carrying this in mind, you can ask him if there’s a deeper meaning behind his parents’ choice on his name the next time you encounter him walking down the corridor at the Department.
