His Beatitude attended the ceremony along with the president of the University, H.E. Dr. Elie A. Salem, and H. E. Prime Minister Saad Hariri. The event was attended by ministers, deputies from the north, official personalities, religious dignitaries, deans, directors, staff, employees and students of the University of Balamand. The University of Balamand was founded in 1988, by His Beatitude Patriarch Ignatius IV; it started with three faculties and grew to nine faculties. The University has also extended to found new campuses throughout Lebanon in Akkar, and soon in Souk Al-Ghareb and Broumana. The campuses in these locations will focus on Chemical Engineering and Aircraft Maintenance. Establishing the University Hospital near the main campus is one of the University’s priorities, in response to the academic essentials and to the social needs of the people in the region. The University medical Faculty contains the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine and Medical Sciences, and the St. Georges Faculty of Postgraduate Medical Education. Starting in 1999, these faculties have graduated around 600 graduates in various medical fields. Therefore, given the substantial progress in this field, and the need in North Lebanon for a University Hospital, the University of Balamand has decided to build a Hospital. BalamandNews 2 balamandnews2 (6)_Layout 1 7/12/10 12:28 PM Page 3 The hospital is going to be named “The University of Balamand – Rafic Hariri University Hospital”. It will have two hundred beds and will be internationally accredited for standards in health care services. The hospital will include essential centers in all medical specialties including internal medicine, general surgery with all subspecialties, including maternity and delivery, and pediatrics. In addition to the above, the hospital will have specific centers for a neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric intensive care unit, critical care unit, dialysis, and oncology and chemotherapy. The University Hospital will have all diagnostic facilities. The hospital will also provide outpatient clinics for medical consultations to be used by the interns and resident doctors as well as special clinics for the University Hospital’s doctors. The hospital will be located near the highway that links Beirut to Tripoli, and near the road that links the hospital to the University of Balamand and to all the Koura. The Rafic Hariri University Hospital will be built on a 140.000 m² piece of land designated for the medical complex for the University of Balamand.
