Ultraminiature linearized VVA
The SAR500x Si-APD from Laser
Components has a 500 m detector chip with
a “reach through” structure. This structure
is responsible for a high sensitivity in the
spectral range of 400 nm to 1100 nm and
simultaneously for extremely fast rise and
fall times, typically of 450 ps. The SAR500X
is delivered in a hermetically sealed TO-18
can. The SAR500X is designed for a wide
range of uses, including laser range finding
and optical communication with data transfer
rates of up to 1 Gbps. Such uses make sense
where high speed and/or a high sensitivity
are necessary.
The SARP500x is an SAR500S-type
APD that has been selected for low noise
and low dark currents (typically 200 pA@M =
100). It is, therefore, suitable for the detection
of the smallest amount of light. The SARP500
series can be delivered in a TO-18 can or
with a thermoelectric cooler in a TO-37 can.
This APD is additionally suitable for use
in spectroscopy, fluorescence measurement, medical technology, and LIDAR
applications.

SP3T analog switches
Maxim Integrated Products’ MAX4908/
MAX4909 are dual, single-pole triple-throw
(SP3T) analog switches designed to handle
negative signals with a single positive power
supply. This reduces external component
count and improves audio signal quality. The
negative-signal capability allows signals as
low as VCC -5.5 V to pass through without
distortion. They operate from a single +1.8 V
to +5.5 V supply.
Other features include integrated shunt
resistors to ground, thereby reducing audio
popping and clicking sounds by depleting the
capacitive charge, which commonly builds
up on the unconnected port of the switch to
ground. In addition, an extremely low 0.38

HSDPA-compliant WCDMA amps
Anadigics has introduced its third-generation high-efficiency-at-low-power (HELP3)
wideband CDMA (WCDMA) power amplifiers (PAs). The company’s HELP3 WCDMA
PAs offer low power consumption and provide
full compliance with high downlink packet
access (HSDPA) requirements, enabling
ultrafast multimedia access while extending
battery life. The complete family of HELP3
WCDMA PAs has been optimized for power
and space-sensitive 3G devices, including
handsets, smart phones, data cards, and
embedded notebook applications.
The PAs use the company’s InGaP-Plus
technology, which integrates bipolar and

field-effect transistor (FET) devices on the
same InGaP GaAs die. Through selectable
bias modes, the HELP3 PAs achieve optimal
efficiency across the low-range and mid-range
output power levels. The PAs reduce average current consumption by 75%, compared
to a conventional power amplifier. This
represents an additional 50% average
current consumption savings compared with
the first-generation HELP WCDMA PAs.
HELP3 PAs provide low quiescent currents
of 7 mA without an external dc-dc converter.
They also incorporate a built-in reference
voltage generator, eliminating the need for
external regulators.
The power amplifiers are offered in compact 4 mm x 4 mm x 1 mm modules. The
products are manufactured using a materials set consistent with the European Union’s
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).

Software-based GPS solution
RFMD has announced that the RFMD
GPS RF8110 is sampling to initial customers. The RFMD GPS RF8110 is an end-toend solution that enables the integration of
high-performance GPS applications in smart
phones, wireless PDAs, digital cameras,
gaming devices and other cost-sensitive,
battery-operated mobile devices.
The hardware component of the solution
is a mixed-signal RFIC built in 0.18 m
CMOS technology for low power and small
size. The RFIC has a hardware accelerator
on-chip to offload the system’s applications
processor and to minimize the data transfer
rate to the host CPU. Low power consumption is achieved through various hardware and
software-controlled power save modes.
The RFMD GPS RF8110 software-based
architecture allows for the straightforward
addition of future functions, enhancements
and customer-specific features on an as-needed basis. Designed to be used in “best-in-class”
portable devices, this solution can be easily
integrated into a variety of leading host platforms powered by ARM-based applications
processors like Intel’s XScale processor, Texas
Instrument’s OMAP, Freescale’s i.MX and
Samsung’s S3C. It is operating system-agnostic and supports a variety of mobile platforms
including Linux, Windows Mobile 5.0 and
Symbian. The RFMD GPS RF8110 supports
both autonomous as well as standards-based

Single-chip GPS Receiver IC
Atmel Corporation and u-blox AG have
announced their latest GPS technology and
product generation, ANTARIS 4, in an ultrasmall form factor. The single-chip ATR0630
measures 7 mm x 10 mm and integrates an
ANTARIS 4 GPS receiver, including ROMbased software in a 96-pin BGA package.
The 96-pin, ball grid array single chip
has an excellent cost-performance ratio. The
single chip also brings benefits such as simplified chipset integration and a shorter bill
of materials to accelerate the development
of ANTARIS 4-based products and lower
design risks.
ATR0630 samples are available in 7 mm
x 10 mm 96-pin BGA packages. Atmel and

Single-chip SXGA camera module
STMicroelectronics has introduced a
single-chip 1.3-megapixel (SXGA) camera
subsystem for high-volume mobile applications. Integrating a CMOS sensor with a digital
image processor and analog system functions
in a tiny package, ST’s VS6624 provides a
cost-effective, all-in-one mobile imaging
solution with design-in flexibility.
The VS6624 camera module integrates
a 1/3.7-inch optical-format sensor with an
active pixel array of 1280 x 1024 (SXGA),
using ST’s advanced 3.0 m pixel design. ST’s
latest developments in pixel defect correction,
sharpness enhancement, gamma correction,
and color space conversion ensure that the
embedded image signal processor (ISP)
delivers outstanding picture quality. Advanced
anti-vignetting algorithms and automatic
white-balance control support color rendition
in varying light conditions.
The device produces an industry-standard
digital video stream at full SXGA resolution
at up to 15 frames per second (fps), while
its fully flexible image-scaling capability optimizes data for display in non-native
resolution settings. The VS6624 also offers a
low-power video mode, supporting 30 fps at
VGA resolution.
Engineering samples are available, with the
volume production scheduled for the end of
the first quarter of 2006. Unit pricing is $8.50

Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced
a breakthrough in its core electronic design
automation (EDA) frequency-domain simulation technology for fast and accurate simulation of highly non-linear circuits, such as
digital dividers used in RFIC circuits. This
simulation breakthrough provides crucial
circuit performance information that can
help avoid design errors leading to an extra
design turn.
Digital divider circuits are examples of
highly non-linear circuits used as part of
larger, mixed-signal and RF circuits, such
as transceivers for cell phones, for wireless
communication devices such as WiFi, WiMAX
and UWB, and for frequency generation of
LO drives for frequency translation circuits
or I/Q modulator/demodulators. In the past,
these highly non-linear digital dividers and
their attendant simulation problems often prevented a complete chip simulation in mixedsignal and RF circuits. Now, these complex
chip circuits simulate and converge quickly—
shortening design cycles and, in many cases,
eliminating an entire design turn.
The enhanced simulator in ADS and
RFDE is available free to supported ADS

Zero delay buffers
Exar Corporation has added a family
of low-skew and low-jitter zero delay buffers (ZDB) to Exar’s portfolio of clock and
timing solutions. Operating at higher speeds
than Exar’s initial ZDB solutions, the
XRK39351 and XRK39653 give designers
additional options for current and nextgeneration architectures.
Operating at speeds of up to 200 MHz,
each device distributes one clock input
to a bank of nine outputs, that reults in low-skew,
low-jitter copies of each clock. The devices
accurately align the feedback output to the
clock input signal ensuring a zero delay
through the IC. The devices offer tight cycleto-cycle jitter spec at less than 22 ps rms to
ensure the production of stable and clean
signals. In addition, the XRK39351 operates
at either 3.3 V or 2.5 V, and the XRK39653
operates at only 3.3 V.
The XRK39351 and XRK39653 have a
fan-out phase locked-loop clock driver
intended for high-performance computing,
telecommunications and data-communications applications. The internal loop filter
is tuned to minimize the jitter (or frequency
variation) while still providing accurate
responses to input frequency changes.
The XRK39351 offers nine zero delay outputs with less than 150 ps of output-to-output skew, LVCMOS/LVPECL
reference inputs, and an output frequency
of 25 MHz to 200 MHz. The XRK39653 also offers eight zero delay outputs
(along with one dedicated feedback) with
less than 150 ps of output-output skew,
and an output frequency of 25 MHz to
125 MHz.
The XRK39351 in a 32-pin TQFP package is $3.68 for 10,000-unit quantities and is

Microchip Technology Inc. has introduced its MCP3550, which is a low
power and small analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with greater than 16-bit

It rejects 50 Hz or 60 Hz line noise, enabling
highly accurate measurements in industrial,
battery-powered and portable devices.
The ADC converter features integral nonlinearity (INL) of ±2 ppm, typical, power
consumption of 0.6 mW maximum at 5 V,
and output noise as low as 2.5 mVrms. The
device rejects 50 Hz or 60 Hz noise greater
than 120 dB, which makes its measurements
impervious to noise from power supplies at
these line frequencies.
The MCP3550-50 (50 Hz rejection) has a
sample rate of 12.5 samples per second (sps),
and the MCP3550-60 (60 Hz rejection) has
a sample rate of 15 sps. Both versions of the
ADC converter offer auto-calibration with
every conversion, and an extended temperature range of -40 ºC to +125 ºC.
Sampling and volume production of the
MCP3550-50/60 are available. The devices are
priced at $3.20 each in 10,000-unit quantities

SDR kit supports SCA-enabled SoC
Xilinx Inc. and ISR Technologies have
readied an off-the-shelf prototyping-to-production kit that accelerates implementation
of software-defined radio (SDR) modems
for programs such as the U.S. Department of
Defense Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS).
According to the developers, it is the industry’s
first SDR kit to support partial reconfiguration
and SCA-enabled System-on-Chip (SoC).
The JTRS SDR Kit consists of reconfigurable
hardware and software elements that are
compliant with JTRS-mandated specifications, including the software communications
architecture (SCA).
The kit leverages the low-power, highperformance digital signal processing (DSP)
features of Xilinx’s Virtex-4 Platform FPGAs,
along with their partial reconfiguration capabilities, to provide a programmable solution
that meets JTRS requirements and lowers
overall power consumption and manufacturing
cost through more efficient usage of processing resources.
The JTRS SDR Kit also leverages the powerful SoC features of the Virtex-4, removing
the need for a discrete general-purpose processor. The kit uses the embedded PowerPC 405
processor to host the infrastructure required

Keithley Instruments Inc. has added
models 2611 and 2612 to its 2600 System
SourceMeter instruments. They add higher
voltage and higher current capabilities to the
source-measure unit (SMU) platform. The 200
V and 10 A capabilities make them suitable
for functional test and I-V characterization of
silicon and compound semiconductor devices.
The 2611 is a single-channel SMU and the
2612 is a dual-channel unit. Multiple units
can be integrated seamlessly with an embedded test script processor (TSP) and TSP-Link.
These technologies let users program and
execute high-speed, automated test sequences
across multiple channels, independent of a PC.
This allows test speeds up to 10 times faster
than conventional test instruments. With two
channels and a 200 V source range, the 2612
is capable of 400 V differential operation,
and each SMU channel is capable of 1.5 A dc
and 10 A pulsed output. Both models have a
contact check feature that is being added to the
2600 instrument line. This feature eliminates
false failures in high-speed test applications
by ensuring that all connections to the devices
under test are intact before a source-measure
sequence is initiated.

extended its line of high-performance GaAs
HBT MMIC VCOs with fundamental, half and
quarter frequency outputs. These SMT-packaged VCOs are useful for microwave radio,
test equipment, military and industrial sensor
applications from 11.5 GHz to 14.9 GHz.
The HMC515LP5E, HMC529LP5E and
HMC531LP5E GaAs HBT MMIC VCOs
are housed in RoHS-compliant, 5 mm x 5
mm leadless SMT packages with a common
pinout. These VCOs integrate resonators,
negative resistance devices and varactor
diodes. The HMC515LP5E, HMC529LP5E
and HMC531LP5E MMIC VCOs tune from

single-chip UMTS RF CMOS transceiver
with receive diversity and GPS. The RTR6285
is a multimode UMTS/EGPRS transceiver
with integrated receive diversity and GPS,
providing global roaming with multiband
UMTS and quad-band EGPRS. Integrated
receive diversity on the RTR6285 transceiver
enables increases in network capacity of up to
50% and of up to 100% for average HSDPA
data throughput.
The RTR6285 transceiver features 0.18micron RF CMOS process technology. An
8 mm x 8 mm package enables slim, sleek
form-factors for mobile handsets by replacing

Previous digital applications were limited to
4001BPU(3) and 4001BPU(4) models with an
inherent bandwidth to accommodate digital

less than 2 dB insertion loss. Rejection is 40
dB-9 MHz and 60 dB-15 MHz. The VSWR
is 1.37. Model 4001BPU(5)D may be factory

LIN system basis IC
The LIN bus continues its adoption in
automotive and industrial applications with
the release of LIN version 2.0 and the release
of SAE 2602 networking specification. The
TH8062 from Melexis extends its LIN transceiver and system basis chips product line
for the development of LIN slaves. This IC
combines a physical layer LIN transceiver according to LIN 2.0, as well as SAEJ2602 with
a 5 V voltage regulator with RESET output for
the connected microcontroller.
The IC is produced in an 0.8 micron HVCMOS technology and optimized for minimal
current consumption, as well as excellent EMC
behavior. The current consumption in standby
mode is typically 15 A. The integrated standby
management ensures that the TH8062 can “wake
up” from the LIN bus or from a connected microcontroller or other external source. This IC
generates a reset output signal to minimize the
external circuitry of the microcontroller. The
power on reset time is programmable from 4 ms
to 30 ms. The integrated voltage regulator generates output voltage of 5 V 2% with a maximum
load current of 70 mA. For self-protection, the
IC is equipped with an integrated load current
