Glackens was instrumental in the purchases of foundational works in the Barnes collection and had an important influence on Barnes’s collecting. For the Barnes Foundation, the year 2014 was a period of programmatic accomplishments that highlighted the strength of our collections and the history of our institution. In our second full year in our new home in Philadelphia, we have begun to realize the promise that our new location holds in allowing us to be a key participant in the cultural and economic life of this great city. The Foundation expanded its exhibition program, presenting three exhibitions in 2014. The first, which opened in January, was an installation of works by Yinka Shonibare MBE. It featured three sculptures commissioned by the Barnes, its first commissions since Dr. Albert C. Barnes commissioned The Dance mural from Henri Matisse in 1930. The show’s focus—themes of education, enlightenment, and opportunity—spoke to ideals embraced by Barnes. At midyear, The World Is an Apple: Still Lifes of Paul Cézanne provided a context for the Cézanne holdings of the Barnes collection. The opening in November of the first major retrospective of William Glackens in 50 years provided a special glimpse into the lifelong friendship between Barnes and the artist, who The increased scope of the Foundation’s educational programs in Philadelphia and in Merion was reflected in its serving over 7,000 students in the School District of Philadelphia with both in-classroom and in-gallery visits, while family programs grew to serve over 9,000 attendees. Adult education programs in art and horticulture, which provide students with unique experiences of our world-class collections, enjoyed increased enrollment in 2014. It has been a privilege to lead this institution in this exciting chapter of its history. I am grateful for the support of our Board of Trustees, whose guidance and advice have been invaluable to me during this time. I am also deeply indebted to our volunteers and my colleagues on the staff of the Barnes Foundation, who work tirelessly each day to welcome our visitors, care for our collections, develop exciting programs, solicit support for our T H E B A R N E S F O U N D AT I O N 2 0 1 4 A N N U A L R E P O R T 1 LETTER FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Friends, operations, and ensure that we are good stewards of the resources that have been provided to the Foundation. In closing, I thank the Barnes’s members and donors for their continued support. I am confident that some of the Foundation’s best days lie ahead. We encourage you to visit us often— we are sure that you will encounter something in the collection that you have not noticed on a previous visit! Margaret B. Zminda EVP, CFO, and COO, and Acting Executive Director During his lifetime, our founder Dr. Albert Barnes referred to the Foundation as “an experiment in education.” As we reflect on the year 2014, we celebrate the Foundation’s accomplishments and we look forward to building on our legacy of experimentation. In late 2014, we honored Dr. Bernard C. Watson for his 15 years of service to the Foundation as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Under his leadership, the Foundation successfully conducted the campaign to construct a new purposebuilt facility for its art collection, relocate the collection, and create an endowment to secure the institution’s financial position. I am grateful for Bernie’s wise counsel and his steadfast determination to build a bright future for the Barnes. This year, we were honored to have John Aglialoro, Daniel DiLella, Catherine Hughes, and Gregory Miller join the Foundation’s Board of Trustees. Each of these accomplished individuals brings unique talents and experiences to the board and we are grateful for their willingness to serve. I would also like to thank all of my colleagues on the Board of Trustees for their efforts on behalf of the Foundation and for their ongoing support of our mission. We are proud to have welcomed over 300,000 visitors in 2014, exceeding the estimates of annual visitation in our initial planning. Our visitors come from communities nearby but also from great distances, including all 50 states and 70 countries around the world. Our exhibition program expanded significantly in 2014, and over 150,000 visitors took advantage of the opportunity to view these special shows. The Barnes Foundation has generated nearly $1.0 million in economic impact annually since its opening in Philadelphia in 2012. We have added a variety of workshops in our art and horticulture education programs to introduce our collections to audiences who may not have the ability to participate in our threeyear certificate program. We have undertaken a collaborative program with the Curtis Institute of Music and are commissioning original musical works by Curtis students and faculty to coincide with our exhibition program. We have introduced a new pre-K education program at three Head Start centers in Philadelphia and have increased the number of schools participating in our K–8 programs for the School District of Philadelphia. Our First Friday and First Sunday programs introduce many new audiences to the Barnes, and we are committed to further expansion of programming that will position the Foundation as a place where many new and different genres of the arts can be experienced. Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our individual and corporate members, as well as other institutions who have supported the Barnes Foundation. We are grateful for your contributions of time and talent, as well as for your financial investment in our future. While we are encouraged by our achievements so far, we are looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead. We are committed to greater access to our collections for audiences near and far and will strive to embrace the spirit of experimentation that was integral to our Founder’s vision.
