President’s Report
I say this every year and I’ll say it again – your
Committee works very hard so that you as
members can enjoy the company and pleasure of
riding your horses on a well maintained property
and using our fantastic facilities.
This year we had the added event of our 75th
Anniversary which may I say was fantastic and
went off without a hitch. I would like you all to
put your hands together for your Committee!!!
In special thanks I would like to mention Lisa
McDonald who has been my vice president for
the last 4 years and has decided to take some
time off. Right now she is winging her way to
the USA so she really did mean time off. A big
thanks to her for being my very supportive “right
hand man”.
Let’s recap what has happened over this last year.
We have a fantastic front gate!!! A great amount
of effort was put in by Anne Harpur (a bit of
persuasion & coercion no doubt) saving our club
over $6,000.
We had a couple of teething
problems & training of members how to open it
properly without damaging it but now it is
working like a well-oiled machine. Well done
Anne.
We have had a big cleanup of the old 60x20
arena and our Nan Herbert Memorial sign was
also installed by the jump arena – all in
preparation for … the 75 th Anniversary
celebrations. What a huge successful day. An
enormous
amount of members labour and
organising went into making this day a “great
day” and will be remembered by those who
attended.
We have repaired the back valley bridge so now
any big storms & rushing water will not damage
it as it has been styled like a slipway. Now also
Darryll has post and railed the open side so it is
safer for horses and cars to negotiate.
A new crossing and culvert was created
in paddock 25 (back valley) where again water
had washed out the normal culvert.
We have managed to renew some fence lines –
this is ongoing along also with spraying &
fertilizing.
The pathway beside the back valley road (by the
concrete) has been dug out & made more stable
and now is an all-weather pathway.
My wardrobe continues to fill up with our
clothing items – still popular and I believe Julia
has another line coming out soon……
Two issues I would like to mention.
Our Security at the property is at best
“unsystematic”. Gates left unlocked or worse wide
open, locker rooms left unlocked.
My other issue is……the speed that we drive our
4 wheel drives or cars through the club seem to be
increasing.
I’ve thought about the reasons these two items
continue to be raised at our Committee meetings?
The word laziness comes to mind but then the
words “time poor” sound more reasonable.
Perhaps we should look at our Club property like
it is a “gold chest” – leave it open & your money
will be taken and then all the time in the world
won’t help you count it or be able to share in it.
Take the time to close/lock those gates & slow
down – take the time to enjoy the riches our club
offers.
I’m looking forward to the oncoming year – the
main body of the Committee is staying and I
welcome four new volunteers into our fold.
The Club property is looking great - each year it
improves and it wonderful to have an environment
keeping our members and horses safe.

From the Committee
Front Valley Horse Wash – over
this winter you may have noticed
that you have not had to pay for the
horse wash. As we are heading into
summer the charges will be restarted. From the 1st October you
will be required to feed
the
machine with the $2.00 coin.
Give Way to Horses and Speed
Limits – as a reminder please
remember that horses have right of
way at all times and the speed limit
on the property is 10km p/h. The
first verbal warning has been issued
for speeding so please slow down
and then the Committee will not
have the added task of being Traffic
Wardens!
The results of the AGM remit … no change but a
reminder and reinforcement of our Dog Bylaw
Thank you to everyone who participated. Here is a copy
of the bylaw (also featured in last month’s newsletter):
•  Dogs must be under full control at all
times (full control is regarded as “at
heel” or on a lead) between the
bottom gate, up to above the shoeing
shed. This means dogs must stay on
the road and are not allowed to go in
or near the sand arenas, the grooming
shed, shoeing/clipping shed area, the
showground and surrounds, the
locker room or the Clubhouse.
(These are out of bounds for health
and safety reasons.)
•  All “droppings” must be picked up in
this area and also around hitching
rails and parking areas.
•  Dogs are not to be tied to locker
room door or fence or arena fences.
•  NO DOGS ON ACTIVITIES OR
DRENCHING DAYS
•  Back Valley dog owners should leave
their dogs in the car, tie them up or
have them on a lead in grooming area
on weekends.
•  Dogs must not be exercised by
running them from a vehicle on our
internal roads.
•  Visiting dogs must be on leads at all
times.
•  Members have the right to approach
any owner if they feel a dog is
creating a problem.
And … Fee Increases
As discussed at the AGM and agreed upon at the
committee meeting this week:
Monthly Grazing Payment Increase from 1st November
– please be advised that as from 1st November 2014 your
monthly grazing payment is going up:
Front valley from $123 to $130/month
Back valley from $110 to $115/month
All automatic orders need to be changed ready for this
date – please do not delay in setting/changing this as our
treasurer or the Committee do not want to chase members
to do this.
Float Park Charges Increase from 1st November – also
the float/truck parking will be increased.
Float park from $60 to $70 p/a
Truck park from $90 to $100 p/a
No change to the locker charges.
Please be advised that the next worming the cost will
be increased to $30. For horses over 600kg the cost stays
the same at $35. These monies go directly to Dairy Flat
Vet who provide this service.
Hay – the hay this year (out of the many years we have
been dealing with our supplier) has been not as good as
previous years and therefore we are considering to try
another supplier. The Committee believes that this will
entail an increase to the hay levy and we thought to warn
you of that before our next winter comes along.
Thanks a bunch!
Welcome to our new
“bouquets” section
where we acknowledge
some of the helpful things members go out of
their way to do for each other. Here are our
first “thank you’s” :
From Pauline O’Garra:
I would like to say a huge “Thank You” to
Debbie Chaffey for looking after and feeding
Jack for me over the last five days while I was
bed-ridden with the Flu and a chest infection Debbie just stepped up and went above and
beyond! Thank you so much Debbie. I would
also like to acknowledge Adrienne Deeley and
Kathryn Jones who also offered their
assistance - you are both very kind - thank you
ladies!
From Bianca Russell and Nino:
Every time I head away with the Black Sticks,
Lizzie Simanke volunteers to look after Nino for
me. She’s been doing it for years and spoils him
rotten while I’m away. When I return I usually find
him in show top condition and smelling of baby oil.
She has Nino’s own set of brushes, feed bowl and
has even purchased new covers for him! ‘Aunty
Lizzie’ never even hesitates to take him for me and
without her generosity and support I’d be in a real
pickle as to how to keep a horse at all. When I’m
away sometimes for a month or more overseas, it’s
important for me to rest assured that my precious
boy is in good hands so I can concentrate on
playing well. I can’t possibly thank Lizzie enough
but if you see her around the club, give her a big
thumbs up for being such a good sort.
From Heidi Paterson:
I'd like to nominate Ana Heath for a bouquet.
At the time, I was still a total stranger at NSRC
to her, and yet she kindly offered me the use of
her float when I wanted to float-train Tara and
also take my daughter, Tess, down to Okura
with us. Thanks to Ana, Tess was able to enjoy
some glorious days riding on the river and
around the Club with me on her borrowed
pony. Ana's generosity still puts the glow in
my smile, and the happy riding memories will
always remain with Tess and me. Hats off to
you, Ana! !
Bianca (front L) and Nino (below)
Huggies keeps ‘em drier!
When Tui Ballinger’s horse Pascoe Brown developed a
nasty hoof condition she came up with a clever idea to
keep his feet dry during some of the wettest weather this
winter … disposable baby nappies! And they worked a
treat. She changed him daily and there were no signs of
nappy rash. Tui says the best brand to use is Huggies
and that Pascoe is now well on the way to being healed.
And speaking of babies …
… Becky Minton is one proud mum!
First Equine has a special
“spring” deal for our members
Equine First Aid Kits - get it before you need
it! Equidays special only $85 Normally $110!
Welcome to Ayla Janetta Ruth Minton, was born on
7th of August, weighing in at a healthy 7lbs 9oz.
Congratulations to Becky and James! And from
Becky: “a big thank you to everyone who has helped
look after Adam over the last few months.”
For those that have horses suffering from stiff
joints : Grand Flex Senior is brilliant only $95
for 1.7kg's or $250 for 4.5kg
There is also additional Devils claw with cider
vinegar base avail, please enquire if interested
in prices.
It's now spring finally and fairly soon we are
going to start noticing some nutty horses about
the place! Mag Eze is a very good supplement
to be feeding your horse to help keep them calm
and on track. It can relax the muscles and calm
the nerves. Our soil generally lacks magnesium
so it's a must have if your horse is showing
signs of deficiency. 500mls only $28 1 litre $55
or 2 litres $90. It only needs to be fed once a
week.

Looking for a rider for Hammer for a For Sale Double Float
while
(the bay horse in pictures,
currently grazing in
Back Valley Herd 1)
I have to go away for two weeks at the end of August 27th-10th
September and again from 15th-30th October and would really
appreciate someone nice who might like a horse to ride for a while.
Hammer is a very sweet, very large, bay gelding. He's an exhunter and has done a bit of everything, and although he's not the
most talented horse he's a great ride. He's honest, and soft
mouthed, but is free and forward moving and there is a lot of horse
to work with. He hasn't got a mean bone in his body, but he does
'look' at the odd thing & he's keen as mustard. For these reasons
he's not really suitable for an inexperienced rider, although if out
trekking he will just tuck in behind and follow along the horse in
front.
He's 16 years old and because of a previous pelvic injury it's best
he's kept exercised, so if someone out there is interested I'd love to
hear from you. He also doesn't jump anymore because of his
injury - even though he really wants too.

Here’s something a little different we heard about and
thought members might be interested in taking part in:
Wanganui Art Gallery Remembers our WWI Horses You Can Too …
Hi, my name is Sarah McClintock and I am the Assistant Curator at the Sarjeant Gallery,
Wanganui. We are working with Cat Auburn, an artist based in Wellington, who is currently
working on a large national project as part of her time as Tylee Cottage artist in residence here in
Wanganui. The project, The Horses Stayed Behind, commemorates the story of the thousands
of New Zealand horses sent overseas as part of the World War I effort. Only four of these
beautiful creatures returned to New Zealand after the war ended.
Touchingly, we have the support of many different horsey people all over the country from
national-level competitors to Pony Club kids with their first ponies, but need the help of the
entire New Zealand horse riding community to make this project successful.
We are creating a huge tapestry made from thousands of small donations of full length horse tail
hair sent from all over the country. There will be a map made of the final tapestry so each horse
owner will be able to find the hair they have contribution within the finished artwork.
We'd love to reach as many horse and pony owners as possible and any help you can give us
would be much appreciated.
I have attached a poster outlining how people can donate to the project. If you could distribute
this to your contacts it would be extremely helpful. If you know of any events where it would be
welcome and appropriate for Cat and I to attend we would love to share information about this
exciting project. We are attending several A&P shows later in the year, and would love to
supplement these visits with other events and venues.
For information about this project you can go to
www.catauburn.tumblr.com/ and www.facebook.com/catauburnartist. You can contact me at
this email address or call me on 0210553983, 06 3473279. This project is incredibly important
to Cat, who is a horse lover from a horse-riding family. Please feel free to go to her website for
more information about her and her work: www.catauburn.com/.
Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards, Sarah McClintock, Assistant Curator, Sarjeant Gallery
