Cinderella Directed by Chelsea Nasby with inspiration from Christopher Wheeldon’s Cinderella Choreography by Doreen Cafarella, Marcie Russo, Charlene Shaw Composed by Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev Music edits by David Schanzer As the curtain rises, Young Cinderella playfully jumps rope when suddenly her mother becomes ill and tragically passes. Young Cinderella is overwhelmed with sorrow, spending much of her youth visiting her mother’s grave. Meanwhile, at the Palace Gallery the King reveals that time has come for the Prince to find his bride. The King orders the butler to retrieve the written invitations to a Royal Ball where the Prince will find a suitor for the thrown. The Prince angrily protests claiming that he should not be forced into a marriage without finding true love. The King becomes enraged by the Prince’s objection and orders the Prince off to begin distributing the invitations. Cinderella perched in her kitchen daydreams of happier times. Now a beautiful young woman masked by filth and treated as a servant by her wicked stepmother and her two homely stepsisters. Although Cinderella’s father loves her very much, he is hen-pecked by his wife and unable to protect Cinderella from this abuse. Still, Cinderella remains cheerful and helpful to everyone. Suddenly, the Prince arrives with the butler to formally invite all eligible brides to the Royal Ball. The forceful mother and her two gawky daughters rip invitations out of the butler’s hand and overwhelm the Prince as he is forced out of their home as Cinderella appears. Everyone prepares for the ball and the family departs. Only Cinderella is left behind. Wishing that she, too, could go to the ball, as she longs for the chance to dance with the Prince. In a grandiose swoop of smoke Fate, who has agreed to watch over Cinderella, appears bearing gifts. Fate brings on the four seasons and shows Cinderella the possibilities that life holds for change and happiness. After an exuberant dance of celebration, Fate and the four seasons bestow on Cinderella everything she needs to go to the ball, including an enchanting coach. With a final warning that she must leave the ball by midnight, they bid her a fond farewell. At the Prince’s palace, a magnificent ball is underway. The Prince enters and greets his guests, including the stepsisters and their ambitious mother, who are eager to attract his special attention. International Princesses arrive from abroad to test their luck for the Prince’s affection. When Cinderella arrives, all the court is captivated by her loveliness, especially the Prince. Making their way through the waltzing ladies, Cinderella and the Prince dance for each other, conveying their joy that they have met. The court then moves to the balustrade to admire the evening sky. Left alone, the Prince and Cinderella dance a pas de deux of wonder and discovery. The court returns for the last dance of the evening, and Cinderella, caught up in her reverie, forgets Fate’s warning. As she realizes that the clock is striking midnight, she flees in panic, leaving the Prince and the court bewildered at her abrupt exit. Only a slipper remains as a clue to her identity. At home, again among her menial tasks, Cinderella remembers the amazing events that have given her a glimpse of the happiness she seeks. Her stepsisters, for their part, grumble that the Prince has overlooked them in favor of the mysterious newcomer. Meanwhile, the Prince searches for the woman whose foot fits the majestic slipper. Eventually, the Prince arrives at Cinderella’s home, where not only her stepsisters but even her stepmother are determined to try on the slipper. To their astonishment, it is Cinderella’s foot that fits perfectly. Acknowledging their love, Cinderella and the Prince are transported to the Fate’s realm, where love reigns happily ever after and fondest dreams do indeed come true. *** INTRODUCTION Cinderella Act 1 Choreography by Marcie Russo YOUNG CINDERELLA Erica Borden CINDERELLA’S FATHER Robert Scruggs CINDERELLA’S MOTHER Christina Kontos FATE Aspen Bohn.
