TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD JESUS
Restoration supported by Ohio Chapter Member Mrs. Connie Frankino transfiguration of our lord jesus by stefano pozzi T his painting is a magnificent copy of the Transfiguration of Raphael, painted by Stefano Pozzi in the XVIII century and completed in 1759. The canvas of the Transfiguration presented several previous restorations. The painting was relined in the 1930s. During this restoration several touch-ups were made to different areas and a final varnish was applied to the surface (This varnish underwent a natural yellowing process which was the principle cause for the need for yet another restoration). The new restoration by the Painting Restoration Labs of the Vatican Museums provided a re-adhesion of the lining where the canvas was partly ruined and detached. The surface was cleaned, removing the yellow patina. The previous touch-ups were also removed and gaps filled and touchedup using new techniques and reversible lacquers. An application of the final overall varnish completed the operation. rt his amazing copy of Raphael has thus regained its original hues and tones, clearly revealing the skills of Pozzi who successfully copied Raphael’s masterpiece. The painting depicts two episodes from the Gospels, The Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor is in the upper section, while the Miracle of the Boy Possessed by Devil is in the lower section. This painting and the Miracle of the Paralytic will be located in the Sala della Benedizione, where the Holy Father blesses the world from the central loggia moments after his election and every Christmas and Easter. washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
