One of the better examples of this was the EVO VI which at best we can tell was easily around 30-40kw above quoted power output. True to form, many of the EVO IX’s we have had on the dyno have been producing around 15kw at the hubs more than an MY06 STi. Both of which are quoted at “206kw” by their respective manufacturers. Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX The newly released EVO IX is a fantastic bit of gear. It may seem like just another revision in a long line of EVO’s, but it is so much more than that! Some major revisions took place between the EVO VIII and the new EVO IX, and all of them were for the better. What was wrong with the old model was improved and what was great was carried over - just some of the changes between the models were: 7 Reasons why these kits are your best choice: • 1. 2. • Our extensive R&D program. Our Unique Triple Guarantee: a. Guaranteed Performance Outcome. b. Factory Warranty Guarantee. c. Parts Guarantee. 3. Proven Track Record 4. How fast? Its your choice! 5. Single Supplier support. 6. Improved Fuel Economy. 7. Drivability Focus. For complete details refer second last page in this document, as well as our web site • • • Reduction in price compared to outgoing EVO VIII model (making it a direct competitor with the MY06 Mitsubishi STi). New 6 speed manual transmission, up from 5 speed transmission on the outgoing model. While quite a good gearbox and able to handle a fair bit of punishment, please note that it is NOT bulletproof as some would believe..! New MIVEC variable valve timing (first for an EVO) engine with a “quoted” 206kw and 355Nm of torque at flywheel. Claimed 0-100kph time is now 5.7 sec compared to 6.1 sec for the outgoing model with in gear acceleration also noticeably quicker (partially due to engine improvements, partially due to better gearing as a result of the extra gear ratio). New external aero package to reduce drag and front end lift, and improve down force. Much improved interior including carbon look trim. Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 1/13 • • • 60kg reduction in weight compared to EVO VIII model (due to aluminium roof, lighter side intrusion bars and lighter wheels among other things). Different (and far better) turbo assembly with revised exhaust housing and notably better response and boost control to the EVO VIII. And if that wasn’t enough, quoted fuel consumption also drops from 10.9L/100km with the EVO VIII down to 10.0L/100km with the new EVO IX. Both on the road and on the track, the new EVO IX is a great all round package and is notably better in just about all aspects. As a base model it is fantastic, but modified it could only get better… THE STORY SO FAR Back in early 2003, after months of dedicated testing, we released a set of kits suitable for MY99-05 WRX owners aimed at giving the best bang for buck possible. Involving a combination of ECU retuning and bolt on modifications, various levels of guaranteed power gains became available at a highly competitive cost. Thousands of happy customers later, these kits are still going strong and are still available in the same form today. Testimony to the strength of the original kit design is that to date there has not been any customers not receive the gains promised. Nor, should we add, have there been any engine failures attributed to an XA, XB or XC kit (reliability is paramount in design of our performance upgrades). Just to refresh some memories, results of the MY03 WRX vehicle used in the original article (and repeated on many more MY99-on models since!) were as follows: XA Kit (20kw at wheels gain) XB Kit (40kw at wheels gain) XC Kit (55kw at wheels gain) All testing, development, tuning and verifications of results has been (and continues to be) completed on our 4WD Dynapack Chassis Dyno. We won’t go into full detail here as many readers will already know the benefits of this type of dyno through our prior articles. However, if interested you can see further information on the dyno we use at http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/dynapack.htm. Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 2/13 LET THE MODIFICATIONS BEGIN! In looking to improve performance, there are several areas that need attention - the key aim is to improve the efficiency of the whole package in order to achieve well balanced results. Unfortunately the days of simply bolting an exhaust system on and seeing good gains in performance are long gone. In order to achieve good, reliable gains in performance, the factory engine management system needs to be recalibrated to suit the parts fitted on the car (whether this be near standard or heavily modified). Often the improvements in efficiency needed to gain additional performance also have added “side effects” such as mild improvements in fuel consumption (when driven sensibly we might add!). As with all prior kits we have developed, the primary aim is maximum improvement in performance, responsiveness and drivability, without any effect on reliability. On the day of dyno testing it was a typical warmish Summer day in Sydney with ambient temps in the dyno room of around 30 Deg C (dyno logged engine bay inlet air temps of 36-38 Deg C), and relatively low humidity. Fuel used was 98 RON Shell Optimax (although 98 RON Mobil Synergy 8000 and Caltex Vortex 98 could also be used for similar results). WHY ECUTEK COMPARED TO OTHER ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS? Some people prefer to remove the factory system and fit a complete replacement engine management system; however this is not our preferred option for several reasons. In the interest of saving space, we won’t go into detail on the general benefits of retuning your existing factory ECU here, but much more detailed information can be found on the website at http://www.ecutek.com.au/ if you need further information. Quickly for the uninitiated, EcuTeK is a software upgrade which is performed on your standard computer, allowing us (and your local authorised MRT/EcuTeK Distributor) the ability to adjust ALL parameters of the factory ECU. There are no wiring changes, no additional hardware changes and most importantly, NO loss of factory features such as variable cam control, electronic throttle control, automatic factory ignition timing and boost safety measures such as active knock control, etc. This is important because: • Interceptor style engine management system modifications do not have the ability to control more complex features such as active knock control, AVCS (variable cam control) or electronic throttle control, etc. They can also interfere quite Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au 3/13 th Revised 11 August 2006 Mitsubishi EVO IX heavily with the factory ECU’s safety measures (e.g. ignition timing reduction, boost control, etc) should something not be going according to plan (for example detection of detonation by the factory ECU due to bad quality fuel). • Complete replacement aftermarket systems generally do not have anywhere near the level of functionality of the factory ECU, so most will not control or allow access to adjust things like variable cam control or electronic throttle control. Exceptions to this are high end management systems such as some Motec and Autronic systems, however these are often very expensive to acquire and setup on the car, and tune to factory drivability levels. And of course, cold starts, idle control and factory drivability remain when simply adjusting what the OEM engineers have already spent thousands of hours tuning. We have used EcuTeK software to reprogram the factory engine management system on everything from standard cars right through to heavily modified cars (with enlarged engine capacity running massive turbo and intercooler combinations and nitrous <!> of all things), without any issues at all. The owner of the S202 STi that won Targa in 2004 and owners of several winning GTP WRX’s (all using EcuTeK enhanced ECU’s) will also agree. ☺ Pic: Tony Sullens celebrates his first win at Targa Tasmania. Car tuned and prepared by MRT FUEL ECONOMY When you think of modifying your car, one of the major things that will run though your mind is the potential effect of the use of fuel. Often misunderstood, fuel consumption need not necessarily be sacrificed. In most cases when the components are fitted and tuned correctly the vehicle will be running much more efficiently and in most cases people have noticed and commented on a Positive result with fuel economy. This is the benefit of properly designed components working together in harmony as a kit. CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY Be sure you get what you pay for! With the success of the MRT Power kits, some companies try to pass off inferior parts and options that vary from the proven results that can only achieved with genuine MRT parts and EcuTeK technology, as outlined exactly in this document. You can count on 100% support from MRT when you use, and insist on the exact components detailed herein. With each tune/upgrade completed you will be provided with a certificate of authenticity that is individually numbered to show what was completed on your car. To register it, simply complete the (detachable) feedback details and pop it in the post. It’s free! Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 4/13 FACTORY WARRANTY GUARANTEE The warranty you get when you purchase a new car has a value and MRT recognize that. The last thing you want to do is give away some thing that you have! The manufacturer of your car provides very specific details on what they cover and under what conditions you can rely for this on. It is not reasonable to expect your car dealer or the manufacturer to warrant something they don’t supply, don’t understand or simply won’t cover. By carefully choosing the right parts and matching them with the right ECU tune, you can rely on having the right back up. Your MRT power kit “Factory Warranty Guarantee” covers parts directly related to the parts included in this kit. Any questions? Please ask!And of course, cold starts, idle control and factory drivability remain when simply adjusting what the OEM engineers have already spent thousands of hours tuning. We have used EcuTek software to reprogram the factory engine management system on everything from bog stock EVO 5-9’s right through to heavily modified cars (with enlarged engine capacity running massive turbo and intercooler combinations, etc) without any issues at all. Pic: Track testing is fun as well as hard work MUFFLER OPTIONS MRT offer several options with your power kit upgrade depending on your preference for exhaust note. In other words, do you want quiet or loud? • Our regular 3” rear muffler offers great performance whilst maintaining a great sporty exhaust note with good looks. This system is louder than the factory OEM system, but only marginally so. • The cannon muffler is for owners who want something a little louder. Great sound, but it will wake up your neighbors if you come home late! You have the choice of either. If you find it hard to decide, choose one and if within 5 days you want to swap for the other, pleases contact us and we can arrange a time to swap them for you. There is no additional parts costs however in some cases a small labour charge may apply. Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 5/13 EVO IX – XA Kit The XA Kit is designed as an entry level starting point for those on a budget looking for a boost in performance over what was delivered from the factory. One of the key things that showed up fairly early on in testing was that the factory engine management system calibration was far from optimal. At best guess much of it was to pass tough European emissions laws, but there were clearly some strong gains to be had in both peak performance and mid range response/drivability. This was especially apparent with the newly introduced cam control settings (changes in colour within the table give an indication of dramatic changes in degrees of camshaft advance – ideally there should be a smooth progression from one setting to the next for best results): Variable valve/camshaft control heavily affects the way the rest of the engine calibration is set throughout the entire rev range as a result of its impact on the combustion process within the cylinders. Variances in cam timing heavily impact the level of ignition timing that can be run along with boost control settings used, which in turn impact on the fuel requirements of the engine. Fortunately with EcuTek software, we have access to all of the factory settings for the variable camshaft control. Along with access to all other relevant factory maps (including both low and high det ignition and fuel maps), many of these issues can be ironed out. After initial testing on fuel supply, injector duty cycles and intercooler efficiency, significant time was spent both on road and on the dyno looking at the factory ECU calibration and making improvements where possible. With just recalibration of the factory management system alone, the results were astounding: Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 6/13 With the variable cam timing issues now rectified and ignition/fuel calibration now altered to suit, with only a mild boost increase of 1.5 PSi (factory peak target boost is around 17.5 PSi) gains of up to 20% more torque were seen from 4400-6300rpm (peak power gains of over 20kw)! On the road the car felt even better, with significantly improved drivability throughout the entire rev range as a result of the much flatter torque curve. DYNO TIME? When you choose a MRT Power kit, you can rest easy. All the test mapping and r/d is already been done. Hundreds of hours on our Dyno, the Road and the Track means piece of mind for you. The cost of all this would be a needless investment for you to repeat on your car, it would simply not be worth it. However you can relax in the comfort that all this data is included of the upgrade that you get as part of this kit. You do have the option for a “before and after” dyno power run, or a custom tune to maximize your particular cars output (every car varies and your car may allow extra output) however this is an optional extra. We weren’t expecting things to be any different with the EVO IX! With the strong results available with minimal hardware changes in the XA kit, we were all looking forward to what would be available with further development. One of the key restrictions found to be limiting power already was the factory exhaust system. While of a much better design than the OEM system on the MY06 STi for example (larger capacity cat converter, larger diameter pipe work in several places, etc), backpressure and temperature testing confirmed it was still posing a major restriction to higher power levels being achieved. After testing a variety of combinations and with additional tuning to suit, the best compromise between results and cost was found with a full system (including replacement high flow cat) starting from the OEM turbo collector back through to the rear of the car. The factory collector, while a favourite to replace with many exhaust shops, was not posing a significant enough restriction at these levels to justify the additional expense of replacement. It would however be one of the next things to consider when moving to a larger turbo combination in the quest for greater air flow. Along with many of the other changes between models, Mitsubishi also fitted the EVO IX with a slightly higher capacity fuel pump than the previous EVO VIII models. However on several cars during testing at this level of modification, the fuel pump was getting a little close to peak capacity for comfort, so fitment of a higher capacity replacement was decided upon. With the exhaust and fuel supply taken care of, it was time to focus on the factory airbox to ensure it wasn’t posing a restriction. Many of the owners of earlier version EVO models have often had replacement filter assemblies fitted in place of the factory airbox before coming to us, but we haven’t seen any yet which live up to the performance claims by the manufacturers. We obtained several different types to test on the dyno for verification. In many cases, fitment of a replacement filter assembly only gave a perceived gain in performance as a result of its effect on air fuel ratios (making the car run leaner). Once recalibrated to satisfactory (and safe!) air fuel ratios, the gains all but disappear. At worst, several of the setups (through creation of vortexes and changes in air flow patterns) caused the factory air flow meter to misread actual air density being ingested. This in turn created big issues with the ECU’s ability to accurately deliver the appropriate amount of fuel and ignition timing. Given that the Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 8/13 actual flow of the OEM factory airbox at these levels was posing minimal restriction to performance (along with the additional cost, minimal gains and potential nasty downsides!), it was decided to stick with the factory setup at this point! With the new fuel pump and exhaust components in place and air intake testing complete, additional calibration of the engine management system was completed: The over 40kw gain at 6300rpm and massive gains in torque throughout the rev range (virtually flat torque curve from 3700rpm to 6200rpm!) more than make themselves felt on the road! The car is now super responsive in just about all gears even with only a few revs on board, being much more drivable than the factory car. In many cases overtaking no longer needs changing back a gear (or two!) with acceleration available with just a stab of the throttle anywhere above 3000rpm. Yet to be taken down the quarter mile, seat of the pants-o-meter and hand timing indicates an easily achievable mid-high 12 sec pass and 0-100kph in around 5 sec flat with a fairly easy launch off the line. Not bad for some minor well thought out modifications! Pic: MRT can service and maintain your EVO Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 9/13 EVO IX – XC Kit With the testing in the previous kits, the main limitation now being reached is the ability of the factory turbo and camshafts to flow enough air to sustain higher power levels. We are presently undertaking a heap of R&D on the EVO IX and hope to have more available shortly. Whiteline are also in the process of completing much of their R&D on suitable suspension setups for the EVO IX for both road and track use. We will be offering their complete range of upgrades for the EVO IX as soon as available (some swaybars and other components available now – call for more details). But even now, with such a fantastic base package and all of the additional performance on tap with the XB kit at such a competitive price, who needs a Porsche? ☺ For full details of kit pricing and specifications, please refer to the last page for further information. Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 10/13 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do the modifications void my new car warranty? (Also refer the details on the Factory Warranty Guarantee listed separately in this document) One of the most common queries we get in relation to performance upgrades on new models is the potential effects on factory warranty. To that extent, Mitsubishi retains the right to refuse claims on warranty where the item being claimed on has been modified or changed from factory specification. However, to date we are yet to have any vehicle fitted with one of the MRT Power Kit upgrades fail as a direct result of the improvements made, with hundreds of kits supplied and fitted to date Australia wide. We also offer a warranty against manufacturer defect on all parts we supply. We also spend countless hours on research and development of parts, tuning, and the associated effects of these changes on the rest of the vehicle. If I have one type of kit, can I upgrade at a later stage if I want more? Easily! All of our parts are designed to be compatible with other items. For example if you have the XA kit, upgrading to the XB kit consists of adding a new engine and centre pipe to the muffler you already have on the car, adding the cold air intake and retuning the ECU accordingly. The cost to upgrade depends on what parts you already have fitted. As a guide it’s generally around the difference in price between your kit and the next + any additional labour associated with the changeover that isn’t covered in the kit. 7 Reasons why you can rely on MRT. 1. Extensive R&D program - each MRT Power Kit is the result of hundreds of hours of road and dyno testing. Different performance components are tested and retested to find an optimal solution to the question of “How can I cost effectively upgrade my car to be quick, reliable, economical AND fun to drive, without voiding my factory warranty?” 2. Our Unique Triple Guarantee: i) Guaranteed Performance Outcome – We guarantee our kits will deliver at least our quoted figures for Power and Torque. You benefit from the hundreds of dyno tests we have performed to optimize our power kits and your car is individually tuned by our expert tuners to give you the best possible result. ii) Factory Warranty Guarantee – Where our modified parts have been fitted to your car by us (or a reseller), should your new car warranty be voided as a result we will cover repair/replacement of any OEM parts negatively impacted by the modified parts under the same terms as the factory new car warranty. iii) Parts Guarantee – All of the parts we supply are of high quality and covered by a full 6 month/ 10,000km warranty or for the life of your factory warranty, whichever is greater. 3. Proven Track Record – Why risk your money playing mix and match with components not designed to work together with no guarantee of a performance outcome or risk of engine failure? We have invested many hundreds of hours in developing each kit offered to find the best performance enhancement solution at realistic price points for you. Thousands of happy customers use their cars with our parts every day. 4. How fast do you want to go – Each kit has been designed specifically to suit your particular model car with different levels of performance based upon your budget and individual needs. Custom solutions are also available where required. 5. Single Supplier – if you encounter any issues, you have a single point of contact to get them resolved to your satisfaction. The possibility of vendors passing the buck and not accepting responsibility is eliminated. 6. Improved Fuel Economy – thousands of km of road testing has proven that your fuel economy will be as good as or better than prior to fitting the kit when the car is driven in the same manner under similar conditions. Pic: Suspension testing at the track 7. Drivability Focus – our kits are not about massive outright power levels (although we can do this separately!), they are designed for practical enjoyment. * For full details refer your MRT reseller and additional information within this document. MRT is independent of Subaru. Copyright MRT Performance Pty Ltd 2006 th Revised 11 August 2006 www.MRTrally.com.au Mitsubishi EVO IX 11/13 How long does the work take? Both the XA and XB kits can be completed within 1 day. The XC kit requires 1½ days due to the considerable amount of parts requiring fitment. When booking your car with us (or your local authorised outlet) the total time your vehicle is required will be reconfirmed for you as well. I have already made some modifications; can I get the same results as seen above? A lot of customers perform modifications in stages, partly due to budget constraints and partly because it starts in stages and then the bug bites and performance becomes an obsession. All of the modifications listed above can be performed around what you already have. Depending on the quality and type of items fitted, we will get performance gains as close as feasible to the above. Of course to make sure you get the gains the vehicle is capable of, just make sure you use MRT parts from the beginning! ☺ Will my ECU still allow me to service my car with a dealer? We would like you to choose us for your regular servicing, but should you choose not to there are no hardware or software changes that will stop a Mitsubishi dealer using the factory equipment. Additionally if they reset your ecu it will still retain its “enhanced” settings. Where can I get the work done? Any authorised MRT/EcuTek reseller can easily complete the above work for you, or assist in designing a series of modifications around your requirements.
