By now, our students have settled into their classes and the fall activities have begun in earnest! Our first six weeks ended last Friday, October 1 st.
As you know, our Board of Trustees has called for a Bond election on Saturday, November 2nd. I have been asked by many of you exactly what the proposed projects are for Westlake High School. I encourage each of you to go to the district

State of the District presentation at a meeting on Monday, October 4 th at 7:00 p.m.
in the Chap Room. She will also lead a Community Bond Forum on Wednesday,
October 13th at 9:00 am and 7:00 pm in the Recital Hall. I encourage you to attend one of these meetings in order to get factual information regarding the Bond.

planners, student directory, project graduation, homecoming mums, pavers and staff appreciation events.

Counselor’s Corner
The counselors have been busy with activities to help our seniors prepare for graduation and college admissions. During the
College 101 presentation, each senior received a copy of his or
her transcript and senior schedule to verify accuracy prior to
being sent for college applications. We encourage continued
participation in college rep visits as well as visiting the campuses themselves (campus visits are for seniors only). The
powerpoint presentation used with the seniors is accessible
through the Counselor page on the Westlake High School website. Additionally, the seniors were reminded how to use Naviance, given a list of important dates and shown how to request
a transcript and letters of recommendation.
Juniors and sophomores have received information regarding
PSAT (for 10th and 11th) and PLAN (for 10th only). The PSAT will
be given on Saturday, October 16th at Westlake High School.
Registration and payment ($25) for the PSAT can be completed
online from Sept 27 – Oct 8 on the Westlake website. All
sophomores and juniors are encouraged to take part in this assessment. This practice test is also a test that can qualify juniors for the National Merit Scholarship competition. For the
sophomores, it is a practice test and results will be given to
them during their Sophomore Conference in January. The
PLAN test (practice test for ACT) will be given to all sophomores during the school day on the morning of Tuesday, October 12th .

The Hills of Austin College Fair is coming on October 6th. We
have over 120 schools scheduled to be here and several have
had to be placed on a waiting list due to the quality of students
we have at Westlake. Seniors will attending the fair during 1st
period and juniors will there during 2nd period.
Freshman have also met with their counselors this fall and they
were introduced to Naviance (a web based planning tool) as
well as reviewing Four Year Plans.

WESTLAKE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL
The Student Council has started off the year with
an extremely busy agenda. Having helped at the
Freshman and New Student orientations by leading tours and facilitating the adjustment process,
we are now focusing on our next projects. A
canned food drive is under way, hosted by our
Community Service committee, and the Safety
and Health committee is preparing for the blood
drive next week. Help save lives at our first Blood
Drive of the year next week from 8 to 4 on September 30th, and we need as many people as possible to participate. Finally, one of our biggest projects of the year is our partnership with Kenya Mahiga High School. We hope that this relationship
will continue to grow and set a precedent for
years to come.

October is breast cancer awareness month. The
Safety and Health committee is planning a special
event on Passionately Pink for the Cure Day on
October the 13th. Wear pink and bring a donation
for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
Homecoming week is coming up! During the week
of October 25 - 29, Student Council is holding
school spirit dress up days. During lunches the Friday of Homecoming week there will be a cookout
and live music. The Homecoming dance is Saturday, October 30, from 9 p.m. to midnight. Tickets
for the dance will be available for purchase during
Homecoming week and at the door at the dance.

About ISM
What are the educational reasons for developing a
mentoring program?
A mentoring program was initiated at WHS to provide
students opportunities for learning from professionals in
various careers and occupations, for students to realize
educational requirements for particular fields, and to
speed up students’ development in principles of employment.
What are the criteria for success?
Working with their mentor in a career field will help our
students:
Recognize better work settings and environments,
Increase students’ productivity and skills,
Make students more savvy about managing their future professional lives,
Connect people,
Increase diversity,
Improve communication skills, and
Model good employee habits.
Why is a formal mentoring program better than an internal system?
Outside consultants (or mentors in professional career
fields) advise and share their unique expertise and experiences, which provides credence and legitimacy to
career mentoring. They are people in-the-know.

ISM is a semester course (1.1 weight) for juniors and
seniors, and counts toward the distinguished achievement graduation plan. Students and mentors collaborate two hours weekly outside of the high school setting
on career topics of interest to the students. Students
also have academic assignments with the ISM teacher
which help build ideas and content about careers.

Purpose
The purpose of WHS’s CTE Advisory Committee is to ensure that the curriculum meets and
goes beyond State standards for maintaining and improving the effectiveness of Career and
Technical Education programs. To have occupational knowledge and participation from the
business community enhances student satisfaction and quality education in CTE classrooms at Westlake.
Time commitment
Two meetings (lasting one hour each): one in the Fall and one in the Spring. You will be
notified of the meeting date, time, and place.

Hyline
You won’t want to miss halftime at the Westlake vs. Austin
High football game on Friday, October 17th! Hyline members
will be dancing on the field with their favorite men (mostly
Dads, brothers and uncles) at our annual “Bob & Susie” performance. Always a crowd pleaser.
Project Hyline

Hyline has pledged to go beyond our everyday lives and reach
out to others this year through Project Hyline. On October
16th, Hyline will host a dance workshop for the residents of
The Settlement Home of Austin. The Settlement Home is dedicated to caring for young girls who have been abused or neglected. In addition, Hyline members are forming individual
relationships with girls who will attend Mahiga Hope High
School in Kenya, a school being built by The Nobelity Project,
an Austin based nonprofit that was started in 2006. The nonprofit's principle goals include education and better lives for
children across the globe.

In October, 2008 Westlake entered
into a “Memorandum of Understanding”
with Bugil Academy in South Korea.
This partnership opened up a cultural
and educational exchange between
our two schools.
A part of our agreement is to send a

from March 5, 2011 to March 19, 2011.
At the same time, a small group of Korean students
from Bugil Academy will study at Westlake. Students will
be responsible for the cost of transportation but will be housed in Bugil
Academy dormitories free of charge. A Westlake staff member will travel to
South Korea with the students and will stay with them in the dorms.

Westlake Choir News
Mo Winners celebrate at Mo Ranch!
Practically before they even cracked open their
textbooks, choir students hit the road for their
annual retreat at Mo Ranch in Hunt, Texas. In
a relaxing, scenic environment, the choir kids
had the opportunity to re-connect with old
friends and make some new ones. Highlights
from the weekend were the incomparable MO
-Lympics, organized by the Student Executive
Council, and the crowd favorite, the MO Talent Show.

Band
The 34th Annual Westlake Marching Festival all day Saturday, October 9, will feature 25 to 30 marching bands from across Texas. More
than 3000 band students will perform their competition shows in
preparation for state UIL contests in October and November. This isn't your mama's high school band show....
Tickets are available at Westlake Chaparral Stadium box office on
the day of the festival. Come enjoy a day or evening of nothing but
halftime entertainment from some of the best high school marching
bands in Texas!!

Baccalaureate?


A student-led service of faith and music.


A farewell service which blesses students of all faiths.
The first event of graduation week, Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Riverbend Centre* 5:00-6:00pm.
A chance for seniors to wear their caps and gowns, and take pictures with their families and friends.
Parents, please
join our commitee, only 3-5

The Baccalaureate Committee is a volunteer group of parents representing Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Jewish faith communities. We
need parents from all grade levels, not just seniors, who can maintain
this tradition for all future Westlake graduates. Our first meeting will be
on Monday, January 24, 2011, 6:30-7:30pm.
