From the director…
In five years, 50 percent of the U.S. population will be 50+.
Neilson Report, August 2012
The Community Services Department has had Fifty Plus Programs since 2004, correctly anticipating
our role to provide a wide spectrum of services suited to the diverse needs and interests of independent
older persons.
The staff continues to find creative ways in which new information and new skills are offered and
embraced by this Fifty Plus population thereby contributing to the overall quality of life for our older
adult residents. A recent survey indicated that the older adult participants credit their center participation
with benefiting their physical and mental health, increasing their opportunities to learn new things,
improving their ability to find out about and connect to support services and have a positive effect on
their quality of life. We are all about successful aging.
The staff has a great reputation for meeting the sometimes vast needs of Westlake’s older adults but
also attending to those with hardships of all ages. The social services area of the department recognizes
those residents who have difficulty providing the necessities for themselves and their families, therefore qualifying for the Westlake Assistance Program, Transportation or Youth Services. These residents
can expect immediate attention to their emergency needs and continued support and resources for the
longer term, if necessary.
We continue to be a think and do department, dedicated to educating individuals on how to live longer
and better through our Fifty Plus activities as well as serving those less fortunate residents.

Activities & Trips
estlake’s Community Services Department, inclusive of patrons who are Fifty Plus, provides many opportunities for
adults of every activity level to find programs serving both social and wellness needs.
The department’s emphasis on providing new programs saw a monthly “wait listed” Lunch and Learn program along with
Traditional Chinese Medicine and Asian Exercise. Educational, health-related programs, health screenings, and a variety
of exercise classes are part of the department’s many regular offerings.
The goal to continually research and provide the most interesting and wide-reaching programs for our patrons continues
as we offer a diversity of activities to those we serve.
20,427 (duplicated) patrons participated
in activities, programs, trips, support groups, wellness programs.
In 2012, Westlake Center offered:
143 activities/programs/trips/support groups and 39 day/overnight trips
I have no idea what my life would be like if we did not have our “Westlake Center For Community
Services” which I still refer to as our “senior center.” It offers services, trips, great programs, food,
fun and fellowship. If you need anything, it is the place to start. If anyone says they are bored,
they have not been there. I have been involved for over ten years, the fun I have had and the
friends I have made are “priceless!”

We feel that the Westlake Center for
Community Services serves everyone
(men and women) with wonderful activities geared to the age of the participants
who use the center. We have enjoyed
all the activities that we have participated
in including the lunches, lectures, trips,
exercise programs, informational
programs, movies, etc. All who work at
the Center are friendly, courteous and
helpful. It is a joy to make floral arrangements for the reception area, to serve on
the Advisory Committee, and to help out
whenever and wherever we are needed.
Thanks to the dedication
and hard work of the staff
at the Center, there is a
huge selection of activities to choose from. Any
older adult who says
there is nothing to do, has
not been to Westlake
Center for Community
Services.
