6 Years in a Row:
Rae-Ann Suburban Named
One of “America’s Best” by U.S. News
F
or the sixth consecutive
year, Rae-Ann Suburban
has been named to the
prestigious “America’s Best
Nursing Homes” list by U.S.
News & World Report.
Rae-Ann Geneva
also received this highly
regarded distinction for the
second year in a row.
U.S. News bases its evaluation
on data from Nursing Home Compare, a
consumer website run by the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid
Services. Facilities earn an
overall rating of one to
five stars, as well as up to
five stars in each of three
underlying categories:
Health inspections,
nursing staffing, and
quality of care.
Both Rae-Ann facilities earned
a five-star overall score in the latest CMS
evaluation, placing them in the top ranks
of the nation’s 15,000+ nursing homes.
Rae-Ann Welcomes
Dr. Michael Dayem
R
ae-Ann is pleased to
introduce Dr. Michael
Dayem, consulting psychiatrist
for our West-side facilities.
A renowned physician who
serves patients throughout the
Cleveland area, Dr. Dayem
customizes care to each
individual’s needs.
Dr. Dayem has achieved a
high level of patient satisfaction and won
numerous awards and honors, including
being named “America’s Top Psychiatrist” by
the Consumer Research Council of America
for three years. In addition to excelling in
psychiatry, he received MetroHealth Medical
Center’s Hedge Award for
four years for his contributions
to the residency program,
where he was chief resident of
psychiatry for three years.
Dr. Dayem attained his
Medical Doctorate degree in
1981 from Alexandria School
of Medicine where he also
received a Masters Medical
Degree in Psychiatry and Neurology. From
2005 through 2010, he was Chairman
of the Department of Psychiatry at
Marymount Hospital.
Rae Ann is proud to have Dr. Dayem
as a member of our clinical team.
Only 10% of nursing homes in Ohio
earned the five-star designation. Rae-Ann
Suburban ranks in the 99th percentile for
best survey history in the state of Ohio
out of 943 nursing homes. Rae-Ann
Geneva ranks in the 96th percentile for
best survey history.
“We are extremely proud that
U.S. News continues to recognize the
exceptional quality of care our staff delivers
to our residents every day,” stated John
Griffiths, owner. “This honor is a tribute to
the dedication of our entire team.”

Nurse Liaison Mary Bennett
Connects Nurses and Residents
S
ince 2011, Mary Bennett,
RN, has served in the
important position of Nurse
Liaison for all Rae-Ann
West-side facilities. Mary
works closely with the
Directors of Nursing and
each facility’s team to assess
prospective residents and
patients. She helps interview patients and
families to understand their expectations
and assists with admissions for short-term
rehabilitation.
Mary’s diverse role also
includes visiting residents during
hospital stays. Many Rae-Ann
families have commented on
the value of Mary’s input when
a resident is hospitalized. Mary
also regularly visits physicians’
offices to maintain continuity of
care for Rae-Ann residents.
Her professionalism, work ethic, and
cheery disposition make Mary a perfect fit
in her role and we are pleased to have her
on the Rae-Ann team.
“Point of Care” Kiosks
Enhance Patient Care
and Recordkeeping
I
n 2014, Rae-Ann implemented
innovative “Point of Care” kiosks for
electronic medical records in all facilities.
Staff members enter information at kiosks
through the day to track and document each
resident’s care and activities of daily living.
Kiosk records are then connected
with the patient’s electronic
medical records.
The kiosks have helped
streamline and improve the
delivery of care, the management
of medications, and the health
care decision process. Teams are able to
work more collaboratively and electronic
forms promote more legible and complete
documentation and information-sharing.
Rae-Ann Wins
Westlake’s
Chili Cook-Off!
R
ae-Ann’s skilled culinary team
won First Place in the 10th
Annual Westlake Community
Services Chili Cook-Off on March 4.
Amanda Varney, Dietary Supervisor,
and Kelley Friend, Head Cook, from
Rae-Ann Suburban prepared the
chili using Amanda’s own recipe.
The chili was served to over 125
participants, who voted among 11
different entries to select the winners.
“Amanda and her staff do
a great job every day for our
residents,” says Carleen Broberg,
Marketing Director. “We are proud
of her and this recognition of her
outstanding cooking abilities.”
Amanda’s award-winning
recipe will now be included in the
new spring/summer menus for all
Rae-Ann facilities.
Belvedere Residents’ Music Video Goes
Viral—Over 3 Million YouTube Views!
T
he residents of the Belvedere are the
hottest thing on the Internet!
A lighthearted music video featuring
90-something-year-olds doing a parody of
the iconic Beastie Boys
hit song, “(You Gotta)
Fight for Your Right
(to Party),” has been
viewed over 3 million
times since it was posted
to YouTube March 30.
The video features
residents and staff and was filmed by
Program Coordinator Stephanie Gumina.
The video can be viewed online at:
https://bit.ly/belvedere-boys-video
The 3:35 minute video features a
96-year-old hipster donning dark sunglasses
and gold chain necklaces, a spunky 94-yearold resident wailing on an electric guitar,
a husband and wife drag racing in their
wheelchairs, several men showing off
appliquéd boxer shorts, and more than
a few taking swigs from a bottle of Jack
Daniel’s (apple juice replaced the whiskey,
says Gumina). Belvedere
co-owner John Griffiths
also makes an appearance,
just long enough to take a whipped cream
pie to the face.
The “Belvedere Boys” and other
volunteer video participants “feel like
celebrities,” Gumina says. “They’re asking
each other, ‘Did you ever think that THIS is
what we’d be doing in our ’90s? We’re all
over the Internet!’ They think it’s awesome.
They have had a lot of fun with it.”
This is the third music video Gumina
and Belvedere residents have produced. “The
residents love making them. We have a very
interesting group here at The Belvedere,”
Gumina says. “They like to have fun, they
are quick learners, and I knew they would
ham it up for the camera!” In February
2014, Belvedere residents did a parody of
the Pharrell Williams song “Happy.” Last
August, they filmed a “senior rendition” of
“Summer Nights” from Grease.
She chose “Fight for Your Right” for
the latest video, she explains, “because I
tease them that I know they are up to no
good when the staff is not around. When
they first heard the song, they were like,
‘Really?’ But I said, ‘just trust me, there’s a
method to my madness,’ and so they did.”
The video was filmed over four days
and Gumina spent two more days editing it
before posting to YouTube. Now, she says,
residents are eager to get started on the next
one. “Everyone is invited to participate;
those who don’t want to be on camera enjoy
watching us film. But many of them love
being in front of the camera.”
In addition to exposure on YouTube,
the video has been featured extensively in
the media.
Rae-Ann Earns Grants to Implement
Ohio’s Music and Memory Program
R
ae-Ann Westlake, Rae-Ann West Park,
and Rae-Ann Geneva have all received
grants to implement a new Music and
Memory program promoted by the Ohio
Department of Aging and the state’s
Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s Office.
The scholarships have enabled
Rae-Ann staff to become specially
trained in program techniques.
Using donated iPods, staff
members assist in compiling
and downloading residents’
personal playlists. The benefits
of having access to favorite music
can be dramatic, especially for dementia
residents who reconnect with the world
through memories triggered by hearing
music they love.
Reaching a patient with advanced
dementia can be difficult and this program
has enabled staff to improve the care
experience for all involved. Through
staff training and certification
and person-centered
care planning for each
resident, this initiative
also has been shown to
decrease depression and
pain as well as reduce reliance on
the use of antipsychotics.
Rae-Ann Westlake, Rae-Ann
Suburban and, and The Belvedere
of Westlake again won top honors
in the annual Westlake in Bloom
Competition sponsored by the
City of Westlake. Congratulations
to our landscaping team!

and work with the
residents and families
here at Rae-Ann,” says
Janelle. “Throughout my early college
years, I realized volunteering at local
nursing homes was something I really
enjoyed and became very passionate
about. People started saying I was a
‘natural’ for this field and I began to see
that they were right.
“Working with and helping older
adults is something I look forward to
every day,” she adds. “I continue to find
myself popping in on the weekends to
make visits to residents or help with a

Rae-Ann West Park Resident
Celebrates 100th Birthday
F
rancis Hagquist, who resides with his
wife Dolores at Rae-Ann West Park,
recently turned 100. A World War II Air
Force veteran who proudly wears his USA
Service Star on a red white and blue ribbon
around his neck, Francis celebrated his
special day with a party
hosted by Rae-Ann West
Park’s Activity Department.
With his family and
friends from local VFW and
American Legion posts at
this side, Francis enjoyed
ice cream while friends and
family also ate cake. Francis, who has three
sons, drank a Budweiser with his family
earlier in the day. He received many special
gifts, but the most special were birthday
letters signed by President Barack Obama
and his wife, Michelle.
Francis enjoys
spending time with
his wife, visiting with
family and friends, and
listening to talk radio
and Cleveland Indians
baseball. Congratulations,
Francis!
IN REMEMBRANCE:
Dr. Karl Fotinos
Rae-Ann’s long-time friend and
medical director, Dr. Karl Fotinos,
passed away December 27, 2014.
Dr. Fotinos was always caring,
compassionate, and dedicated to
residents, believing that the best
way to care for each patient was
to personally get to know them as
an individual. His professionalism,
example, and warm personality
will be greatly missed by all who
knew him.
