Page 8 Waterford Senior Living Garden Update Nothing finer than a tomato right off the vine. This month we have plenty of them. We brought in over 50 of them in just one picking. There are still plenty more green ones out there so we will have a lot more coming yet. The lettuce is done and the beans and peas are also. But we all decided this was a great year for tomatoes. Waterford Senior Living ~ 301 S. Sixth St. ~ Waterford, WI 53185 ~ 262-534-4800 ~ [email protected] Director’s Message We would like to keep our meal times and activities free of distractions so we are asking residents, family members and visitors to turn off or silence their cell phones while in the dining room. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation with this request. Kristy’s Korner Waterford Senior Living has set aside October 6th , 6:30 pm for a very important, informative seminar regarding end of life preplanning. No one likes to think about death, let alone plan for it. In many families, discussing one's mortality is an extremely uncomfortable topic. By pre-planning our funeral, we relieve our family of having to make important decisions during a period of great stress and grief. John Mealy will lead our discussion and will provide easy to use handouts which will help you answer the important questions. There will be time for questions and refreshments will be served. Residents, families, friends all invited to attend. Please call Kristy at 534-4800 if you have any questions. Birthday Lunch Holy Cow! We have 5 residents with August birthdays. Genny, Wally, Mary Ellen, Helen and Don were honored on the 9th. Barb from the kitchen made a lovely cake. The ladies were also given a gift certificate to the salon for a wash, cut and set, and the men one for a haircut. A gift from WSL and Carrie the beautician. State Fair Cream Puff Day Every year on the first day of the State Fair, Cindy makes us Cream Puffs just like at the Fair. The great day finally arrived on Thursday, August 4th. Thanks to a little magic from Marilee in the kitchen, Cindy starts whipping the cream at 11:30. That way they are ready for us to eat as our dessert for lunch. That first bite is heaven. For some that first bite is messy. Cindy showed us the correct way to eat a cream puff by twisting off the top so you eat it in 2 halves and don’t loose any cream. Pure Wisconsin Goodness. The heat had finally gotten to us and we went nuts. For 1 day we did all kinds of crazy things. We dressed crazy and we ate ice cream for breakfast. In keeping with the theme we ate lunch backwards. We had dessert first and had our salad at the end. You name it, we did it. It was so much fun to see how people would dress. Way to go to all who got into the spirit and had fun with us. The TCAP Senior Olympics were held on Wed, August 10th at Festival Hall on the lake in Racine. Residents from 19 facilities in Racine, Kenosha, Walworth and Lake, IL counties participated. There were approximately 200 athletes in attendance. It was a beautiful day. 7 Residents from WSL participated in the Olympics: Mary Ellen M., Gene K., Mary M., Julian W., Lori L., Genny R., and Eugene A. There are 9 events: bowling, horseshoe toss, putting, ball darts, bean bag toss, basketball toss, soccer kick, shuffleboard and lasso golf. Our athletes each competed in 3 of the events that they had chosen. We were very successful this year. Gene K. took home 2nd place in the Horseshoe toss. Everyone took home participation ribbons. All the scores are tabulated and the athletes in Racine County took home the gold medal for the 4th year in a row. Thanks to Joe and Sue for volunteering to help drive and haul equipment, and to Heather and Anita for coming along and helping us out for the whole day.
