Westlake Teams Take Five
Westside Alzheimer Walk Awards
The 3rd Annual West Side Walk to End Alzheimer’s held Saturday, September 21st at Avon’s
All Pro Freight Stadium featured a group of amazing and committed walkers who showed up to reclaim the future for millions!
Despite drenching, soaking, downpouring,
seatpuddling, mascara-running, umbrella-raising,
shoe-squelching, ground-pounding rain, the Walk
raised over $152,000 to support research toward a
cure & treatment, and to provide free programs
and services to over 56,000 Northeast Ohioans
with the disease.

All Treats, No Tricks....
Part of Life Care Center of Westlake’s mission is to observe holiday fun by including community events in the regular schedule of activities at this vibrant nursing
home care setting and long-term care facility close to home at the corner of Center
Ridge and Canterbury Roads. A lively trick or treat event that brought neighborhood children and resident family members to Life Care Center Westlake on Sunday
added up to a fun day for all.

Participate in Cleveland Museum
of Art Ambassador Program
Eight Westlake
High School AP Art
History and AP Studio
Art students will participate in a Cleveland
Museum of Art Museum Ambassadors program that provides a
behind-the-scenes experience at the worldclass institution.
Master Students
are seniors Avery Bogart, Sela Cunningham,
Caroline Gray, Maria
Kuhn and Rose Song.
Kylie Hulver, Maria Kuhn, Elizabeth Noren, Rose Song, Kathy
Apprentice students

are juniors Paige Daw(Missing are Avery Bogart and Lucia del Rincon Martinez)
son, Lucia del Rincon
Martinez and Kylie Hulver. Students were chosen for the program by art teacher Kelly
Atkinson and Social Studies teacher Beth Noren.
The first year of the program has students participating in behind-the-scenes experiences in various departments at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In their second year, students participate in similar experiences at other University Circle institutions, including the
Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Cleveland Orchestra. The program is designed to build a general awareness of museum life and careers,
as well as to build career skills, including public speaking and team-based project planning.
WHS students will visit the museums once a month October through May for the
program. They will develop a project for a Family and Community Day next spring at
the end of the program year, which will complement the Cleveland Museum of Art’s new
Gallery Once space. The Family and Community Day involves students sharing what
they’ve learned with the public in the form of projects, which have included scavenger
hunts, games, coloring books, tours and studio activities.

WHS Students Spent Summer in Cleveland Clinic Research Facilities
Three Westlake High School students spent their summer working with medical students and physician-researchers as part of the Cleveland Clinic Office of Civic Education
Initiatives Summer Internship Program.
The program is a paid nine-week internship that fosters 21st century skills in which
students explore science and various health careers through one-on-one mentoring relationships with Cleveland Clinic doctors. The program is designed to increase high school
students’ interest and literacy in science by expanding their learning experiences beyond
the classroom.
WHS senior Rahil Desai participated in the radiology internship program. His research resulted in a report entitled “Overview of Non-Oncological Hepatobiliary Interventions in Interventional Radiology.” Through his research he found interventional radiology – an application of radiology that enables minimally invasive procedures to be
performed with the aid of fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography or magnetic
resonance imaging for guidance – is less traumatic for patients and reduces hospital stays,
costs and risk of infection or other complications.
A video, PowerPoint presentation and poster on Rahil’s research can be found at
http://webcast1.ccf.org/viewerportal/ccfe/home.vp?programId=esc_program:43125.
WHS senior Deepak Kumar, who participated in the radiology internship program
in summer 2012, moved to the science internship program last summer. His research
resulted in a report entitled “The Effect of Age and Gender on Quantified Blood Pressure
and Heart Rate Responses to Tilt Test.” His research found no statistical significance in
differences in blood pressure abnormalities for distinct age groups and gender differences. He concluded that the compilation of more data on patients would benefit the
study in determining with higher certainly the relationships between age group/gender
and blood pressure and heart rate abnormalities on the tilt test.

Rds. Both continued on to Detroit and Columbia Rds., (as did the witness) where the physical fracas occurred. The 60-year-old Westlake
man reportedly got out of his truck wielding a
hammer. The two subjects fought, and then
went their separate ways. The City Prosecutor
will review the report for possible charges.
Teen Arrested After Accosting Westlake Juveniles
A 17-year-old Westlake boy was arrested at his home this morning after confronting
students who were on their way to Hilliard Elementary School. At 8:05AM, a crossing guard
on Hilliard Blvd. reported that the suspect was
frightening school children as
they walked to school. WPD officers checked the area; he was
not located.
At 8:23 a.m., the Hilliard Elementary School principal
reported complaints from three students that this male had
lunged at them as they walked/biked past him together; he
also tried to topple a fourth student bicyclist with his foot.
All four evaded the suspect, told the above crossing guard
about the incident, and arrived at school safely.
WPD School Resource Officers recognized the suspect’s physical and clothing description as matching that of
a former Westlake High School student. He was arrested
without incident at 11AM. The suspect is currently in the
Westlake City Jail awaiting a decision from the Detention
Home as to whether he will be held there or released to
family.
Recommended charges could include Disorderly Conduct, Attempted Assault, and Inducing Panic. The last offense incorporates heightened public anxiety over recent
suspicious child-stranger contacts in this and other Greater
Cleveland communities.
The final decision on charges will be made by the Juvenile Court.

It was Brunswick resident Mario Herevia who took home the
Brunswick table!
“I never make that shot the first time I try it, but I did tonight!”
exclaimed the delighted winner after the event.
His shot was selected for the win by professional Billiards Player

No, basketball season didn’t start early. The final score of Westlake High’s football
win over Rocky River Friday was really 56-55.
The game of wide-open
offensive assaults ended
when Rocky River, trailing
by one point after a touchdown with 32 seconds left
in the game, went for a twopoint conversion. A tackle
by Westlake’s Kent Axcell
stopped River quarterback
Matt Lowry just short of the
goal line. Westlake racked

Avon Lake Launches Youth Wrestling Club
There are no losers in wrestling, just
winners and learners.”
That’s the motto at the heart of the
new Avon Lake Wrestling Club which
will conduct information meetings and
sign-ups for youth wrestlers on Monday
Oct. 21 at 7PM in the Avon Lake High
School Commons Area.
The club is open to any child age 5
and older.
In a short time the fledgling nonprofit club has managed to assemble an
impressive team of accomplished coaches and dedicated parents with many
years of wrestling experience, including:
Head biddy/youth club coach is Marcus Effner, a state champion at Garfield
Heights and a 2-time NCAA qualifier.
Assistant Varsity Coach is Anthony
Coleman, a state champion at Bellevue and
a 2-time NCAA qualifier; and Head Varsity Coach Nick Mayer, was a 2-year starter
at Ohio University. Local standouts and
long time Learwood Coaches Scott Peepers and Don George add to the team.
“I was born in a wrestling room,”
says Marcus Effner. ”At least that’s how
it felt, growing up with a dad who was
a college coach (Jack Effner was head
coach at Cleveland State University). It’s
exciting to see how many
kids and parents have already responded to the
idea of this club.”
One of the best things
about wrestling, is it’s a sport
where size doesn’t matter.
Big or small, wrestlers are
matched by age and weight.
“I was small, and had
trouble fitting in, and competing in some of the other
sports,” says new Varsity
Coach Nick Mayer. ”When
a wrestling coach turned
me on to wrestling, it really
changed my life.”

Westlake Police report that an 84-year-old Bay Village woman withdrew $9300 from her bank
account on Oct. 4 after receiving a phone call from a “police officer.” The caller reported that her
granddaughter had been arrested for drug charges and needed bail
money. When the victim tried to make another withdrawal on Oct. 5
at another bank where she has an account, the teller became suspicious and called WPD and the granddaughter, who of course was not
in jail. No suspects.
