A packed house of excited students, administrators, teachers, staff and community members and leaders were on hand to cheer a group of incoming students as they cut the ribbon to mark the opening. The dedication represents the culmination of a three-year construction project that began in 2010 with the passage of a bond issue to support Phase I of the Westlake Schools Master Facilities Plan. Board of Education President Thomas Mays joined Supt. of Schools Dr. Daniel Keenan in recognizing the commitment of the BOE and the concentrated efforts of the Citizens for Westlake Schools Bond Issue Campaign Committee. Excited students served as ambassadors to the hundreds of community members who toured the building. Of special note was the attendance and recognition of descendants and family members of Lee Burneson, the school namesake who served the district for nearly 50 years. His contributions as the fledgling community grew from Dover Township to the Westlake of today spanned 42 years and nine months, 39 years as Superintendent. The new school will serve 650 students in grades 7-8 with 40 classrooms. Six are dedicated to science and 2 to foreign language. A 2,600 square foot media center and two fully-equipped computer labs bring state-of-the-art tech capabilities. The former Lee Burneson Junior High was opened in 1982. Our recent building projects have housed this increased enrollment, however, facilities to handle the increas- es from now on must be planned and started soon.” Westlake Schools have another exciting dedication to celebrate this summer as the new Westlake High School nears its opening date. Westlake Schools Approve Levy Bid The Westlake Board of Education approved placing a 5.4-mill operating levy on the Nov. 5 ballot. In May, a 5.9-mill levy failed by just 44 votes. After the narrow defeat the district opted not to seek an August ballot, but made about $1 million in cuts and sought community feedback about how best to proceed. The district already made tough decisions. The district cut $5 million over the past three years - or 10 percent of its budget. This year, cuts included eliminating 19 positions and further reducing transportation services – no one living within 1 mile of their home school will receive transportation services in the coming school year. The Westlake Schools have consistently been recognized as one of the top districts in Ohio while also receiving a number of accolades for saving money through shared services, innovative practices, consortium purchasing and partnerships. Certainly, you are lucky if you have some kind of benefits to help with your dental treatment. Sometimes though, dental insurance may somewhat inconvenience you in order to get the best benefits. If your dentist and the office manager do not understand the intricacies of your dental insurance you could stand to lose benefits and have to pay more out of your pocket. A perfect example of this was my recent trip to my dermatologist. I come from a very freckly family, and we all go for annual checkups to make sure that there are no moles that need to be removed. When I went to my dermatologist, just a couple of weeks ago, he did find something that that he didn’t think was important, but wanted to remove it anyway. I told him that I had the time if he had the time and to just go ahead and do it then and there. Because he knew about my medical insurance, he had told me that it would be to my benefit to come back for another appointment to have it removed because VILLAGER BEAT READER COMMENTS ON PD CUTS: ”Please allow me to vent about not having a 7-day week newspaper. They are assuming everyone gets their news from the Internet or electronic device. If the electric lines and towers are functioning, yes, that is partially true. But for us senior citizens as myself, my eyes get tired from viewing the computer screen and the printed page is easier and steadier print. (Regardless of what Chris Quinn, associate editor says about his mother using electronic sources.) And the PD had the audacity to charge almost the price and include a Sun News for 74 cents. But more critical, this 3-day newspaper is a threat to Democracy and an informed electorate. Thanks for listening.” my medical insurance will not pay to have Dr. Louis Malcmacher Dr. Kinneret Kozinn these moles removed on the same day dental benefits left, now is of the examination. Westlake Schools Approve Levy Bid continued from page 2 ognized as National Blue Ribbon Schools in 2013, two are part of the Westlake City Schools. The district is taking measures to control costs, including changes to employee insurance and a move to a health care purchasing consortium that saved more than $1 million annually. Last year, a 5 percent pay reduction was instituted for all new administrators. Earlier this year, teachers agreed to a 0 percent pay scale increase and a 2.5 percent decrease in the second year of the new contract, saving more than $5 million. Recently, classified staff agreed to a two-year wage freeze. All employees’ insurance contributions rose by 50 percent for the first time. After community input, the November levy request was reduced to 5.4 mills and would be the first operating levy in seven years. The levy will allow current programming to remain. “Our schools reflect our community’s values as defined through our Continuous Improvement Plan,” said Superintendent Dr. Daniel J. Keenan Jr. “Great schools make great communities. We understand the importance of providing the schools our community expects while being fiscally responsible. Even with this levy, Westlake will remain in the bottom 25 percent of school taxes in Cuyahoga County and will ensure great schools for a great community.” If the levy fails in November, Dr. Keenan indicated he will recommend another $2.2 million in cuts, which may include eliminating 30-plus teaching positions and seven to 10 non-teaching positions; imposing additional transportation cuts; eliminating access to school buildings after hours; either significantly increasing tuition for all-day kindergarten or eliminating all-day kinder- garten; reducing athletics, music and arts offerings or imposing significant payto-participate costs; cutting AP offerings; and delaying or eliminating International Baccalaureate programs. “This levy is critical for the future of Westlake Schools,” said Westlake Board of Education President Thomas Mays. “We listened to the community and we believe this is our best option to keep Westlake excellent” ATTENTION VETERANS Basement Waterproofing Drain, Tile, Foundation Repair or New Clean Professional Work • No Subcontractors Licensed • Bonded • Insured Since 1983 Member 440-888-9180 FREE Estimates Senior Discounts Carnival & Casino August 16·17·18 New Midway Games & Prizes! I would still be stuck in my old house if you didn’t sell it for free...” – Cathy, Avon Lake “Ohio Family Realty agents were very patient and knowledgeable when we looked at homes in this area. We had come at Thanksgiving time to visit our daughter in Bay Village. She suggested we move closer to family and arranged a meeting with Ohio ‘Family Realty. They were honest and helpful.” – Glenda, Avon “The single most important reason to use Ohio Family Realty is, Personal Service. It is why they are so successful.” – Denise & Terry, North Olmsted “Improved Housing Marks End of Lifetime Realtor Program” In April of 2008, Ohio Family Realty initiated the Lifetime Realtor Program as an effort to help their clients during the temporary downturn in the housing market. Ohio Family Realty was able to assist 249 families through this program! Our Lifetime Realtor Program allowed us to sell clients’ old houses for free if Ohio Family Realty represented them on the purchase of their new home. Because home prices have stabilized and our local housing market is improving, we are now limiting our Lifetime Realtor Program to the 249 families currently enrolled in the program. This will become effective April 1, 2013. We appreciate our customer loyalty and look forward to working with you in the future!
