The Award honors African-American Women ‘In the Spirit’ of the noted Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA. The celebration took place at downtown Cleveland’s Intercontinental Hotel. Sr. Kendra was honored along with Sr. Rosella Holloman (CSA) Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine, and Sr. Juanita Shealey, Con-gregation of St. Joseph. The Award is presented through the Catholic Diocese of Greater Cleveland Office of Ministry to African American Catholics. “This award, which has been named in honor of Sr. Thea Bowman, who dedicated her days to creating harmony and understanding among all people, is a significant way to recognize the AfricanAmerican women in our Diocese who are continuing the good work which Sr. Thea Bowman started,” said Richard Lennon, Bishop of Cleveland. “The ‘Thea’ awards are presented to women in the African American Community who have provided strong and effective leadership and service. Award recipients foster educational oppor-tunities, demonstrate strong personal faith and compassion for others.” Sr. Thea Bowman was the granddaughter of a slave, born in Mississippi who, at 15, began her journey to become a Franciscan minister noted for bringing the richness of black culture and spirituality with a message of community and equality to the Catholic Church and the community at large. Sr. Kendra is the second Black woman to enter the Chardon Province of the Sisters of Notre Dame. She started high school at Notre Dame Academy, commuting from her Glenville home, graduated and then taught French and Biology for over 30 years. In 2001, her life changed. “On Sept. 11, 2001, our nation was shaken by the attack on the Twin Towers. On Sept. 18, 2001, my life was shaken by the news that my baby brother, Charles, had a galloping form of cancer. On Sept. 29, 2001, Charles turned 40 and on Dec. 18, he died. My world collapsed,” said Sr. Kendra. Losing her brother caused Sr. Kendra to take time off from teaching. “This death and other factors resulted in my discovering a new call to serve God in chaplaincy – serving the sick and dying,” said Sr. Kendra. Her path led her to St. John Medical Center. “My job as chaplain is to minister to God’s people in pain. Better put, I just show up and wait for the Lord to speak through and to me,” said Sr. Kendra. “As I loved teaching and was excellent at it, so I love my work as a chaplain and I believe I do that well, also.” Sister Juanita Shealey, CSJ, Sr. Rosella Holloman, CSA and Sister Mary Kendra Bottoms, SND Dancer Ms. Barbara “Iyaloda” Barrett celebrates Ava Maria Sister Kendra and her mother The Gardener’s Garden Center… …since 1948 27630 Detroit Rd. • Westlake (440) 871-3761 www.cahoonnursery.com Keynote speaker Sr. Dr. Oralisa Martin Trees • Shrubs • Annuals • Perennials • Pottery • Garden Décor • Bird Feed & Feeders • Bags of Topsoil, Mulch and just about everything you need to make your garden thrive Mon-Fri: 9-8, Sat: 9-6, Sun: 10-5 Sr. Kendra and James Guliano, Chief Nursing Officer, SJMC Page 3 - THE VILLAGER - May 26 - June 1, 2011 Page 4 - THE VILLAGER - May 26 - June 1, 2011 Our Services Include: • General & Restorative Dentistry • Cosmetic Dentistry • Teeth Whitening • One-Hour Whitening • Crowns • Bridges • Periodontal Treatment • Root Canal Therapy • Lumineers • Botox • Dermal Fillers - Restylane & Juvederm 440-892-1810 27239 Wolf Road Bay Village, OH 44140 Louis J. Malcmacher, DDS MAGD Drs. Gross, Malcmacher, Thaler & Associates, Inc. Toothache Troubles.... What do you do if you have a toothache? It is just amazing to me what we have seen patients do for their own toothaches in all my years of dental practice. Let’s start right from the beginning. The first thing that you should do if you have a toothache is call your dentist and make an appointment to see them as soon as possible. I cannot tell you the number of times patients have waited, and waited, and waited to see if the toothache will go away before they call the office. What usually happens at that point is that the toothache is so bad that they now have an emergency, usually at a inconvenient time, like midnight or a Saturday afternoon, when it will be pretty difficult to find a dental office open. So rule number one is do not ignore any pain that you have in your mouth. These are usually warning signs that there is something wrong and it is only going to get worse, not better. The second thing you should do if you have a toothache is take some Tylenol or ibuprofen, such as Advil or Motrin. Aspirin and ibuprofen work a little better if the nerve of the tooth is inflamed, only because these medications also act as anti-inflammatory agents. There is really is no reason to have to live with the pain of a toothache with these excellent pain relievers around. Many people call the office and we ask them if they have taken anything for their pain and they say, “No”, and we can’t figure out why. The one thing you should not do with an aspirin tablet is place it directly on the tooth or gum. This is an old wives’ tale and usually what happens is that the acid in the aspirin tablet will cause a chemical burn on the gum tissue, which will only complicate the situation and make the pain worse, not better. Generally, if you have a toothache and your tooth or teeth are sensitive to hot and cold stimulation, this very well can be a tooth problem instead of a gum problem. A dull, throbbing ache around the neck of the tooth may very well be a gum problem. Swelling in your mouth can come from either teeth or gums and usually denotes a very active infection going on. For any kind of swelling, you need to contact your dentist immediately. If you have a broken tooth, you should rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. What do you do if you or your child has bitten your lip or your tongue do to an accident of any kind? Clean the area with a cloth and apply cold compresses to reduce any swelling. If the bleeding doesn’t stop you will need to go to a hospital emergency room immediately and may need some stitches. If you don’t have any dental pain, go see a dentist as soon as possible. VILLAGER BEAT INTERSECTION RELIEF IN BAY: Goods news for drivers who travel north on Bradley into Bay Village! The cities of Bay and Westlake will join in renovating the intersection at Bradley and Naigle Road just north of the railroad tracks. This troublesome intersection has begged for help for a long time as drivers frequently get stuck on the railroad tracks behind northbound travelers looking to turn left onto Naigle. Grants and loan monies of $1.2 million from the State Capital Improvement Program will make this happen, plus engineering costs of about $35,000 to each city. The intersection will be widened to three lanes with a stop light. John Schneider It was a weekend of joy and thanksgiving for members of the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish of Avon Lake. John Schneider, the son or Mary and Jim Schneider from St. Joseph Parish, was ordained a priest by Bishop Richard Lennon on Sat., May 21 at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland. Father John celebrated his First Mass at St. Joseph on Sun., May 22 at 11 a.m. “He chose to do this at a regularlyscheduled Sunday Mass so that as many of you who would like to attend will be able. A parish reception will follow this Mass,” reported Fr. Timothy O’Connor, Pastor of St. Joseph. The day proved to be a huge celebration as the church was packed with well-wishers, friends and supporters of the church family. Fr. John has been assigned as a parochial vicar [associate] at Holy Family Parish in Parma, effective 7 June. Fr. Charles McMillen Butkowski “I want to congratulate his mother and father, Mary and Jim Schneider, as well as his brothers and sisters. They have had a lot to do with nurturing and supporting the call – the vocation – that John has been given by God: to be a shepherd after the Lord’s own heart, and to act in the person of Jesus Christ and welcome people to come through the door that leads to everlasting life,” added Fr. O’Connor. Fr. Franz Christoph Dool “We continue to pray for our other two seminarians from our parish: Scott Goodfellow and Lou Balzer. “ Bishop Lennon ordained six new priests, 5 for service to the Diocese of Cleveland and one for service to the Archdiocese of Daegu, South Korea this year. Joining Fr. John Schneider from the west side is Fr. Charles McMillen Butkowski of St. Peter Parish, North Ridgeville, son of Paul and Lois Butkowski, and Fr. Franz Christoph Dool of St. Christopher Parish, Rocky River, son of Carl and Georgene Dool. Caring For Our Neighbors This past year Community West Foundation gave $3,350,716 to our community, supporting Fairview and Lutheran Hospitals and charitable organizations providing direct service to the needy. Here are some examples of the important ways Community West Foundation impacts our community. Faith in Action St. Paul’s Community Church is ever mindful of those in our midst who need our help – the homeless, the hungry, the unemployed, the elderly and chronically ill. St. Paul’s Drop In Center distributed 1,099 bags of food, 1,250 bags of clothing, 600 bus tickets, 1,166 hygiene kits, plus 1,442 pair of socks and 80 pair of boots last year. Many clients are mentally ill and homeless, and encouraged to come to the center to have their feet examined by their parish nurse. Community West Foundation’s funding of $17,000 will sustain St. Paul’s outreach efforts through 2011. St. Paul’s Community Church is a true example of Christian faith in action, serving local needs unconditionally with compassion. Help is Here Community Resource Services is an agency dedicated to meeting emergency needs of Avon and Avon Lake residents, but no person is turned away when individuals and families need short term assistance. Community Resource Services provides food, rent, and utilities assistance, and information and referrals to other social service agencies. It also offers free programs, ranging from Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten to Job Skills to Reducing Credit Card Debt. Community West Foundation provided $5,000 in funding for this very helpful local resource to ensure people in economic stress have a place to turn to for help. St. Paul’s Community Church reaches out to the city’s vulnerable with Christian compassion. You can support the work of St. Paul Communty Church and Community Resource Services by making a donation directly, or through your Donor Advised Fund at the Community West Foundation. The girls began by brainstorming ideas for a Bronze Award project. They contacted the city with their ideas, and the city helped the girls develop it into a meaningful project. As pre-requisites to begin their Bronze Award project, the girls earned their Wildlife Badge, Pet Care Badge, Art in 3-D Badge, Looking Your Best Badge and the Junior Aide. The girls took field trips for some, while other parts were in classrooms. The sign depicts animals, insects, birds and reptiles that would be seen while visiting the park. The girls researched animals and compiled the data into a common format to be placed on the sign. Page 12 - THE VILLAGER - May 26 - June 1, 2011 Chicks Against Hunger Hosts Food Drive The Altar of Freedom by David Scullin Memorial Day is a time to remember all who gave their lives for our nation and our freedom. President Lincoln wrote the following to Lydia Bixby who lost five sons in the civil war. “I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming...but I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.” Chicks Against Hunger and local Jazzercise locations teamed to host a food drive to benefit Second Harvest of North Central Ohio last weekend at the Jazzercise Center at 1502 Lear Industrial Parkway in Avon (right across from Petitti’s) and other west shore locations. For $5 and a nonperishable food donation, participants enjoyed Jazz- ercise and helped a great cause. Kim Krall (center) reported the day was a huge success as she worked the Avon drop-off with a team of volunteers. “Our total food weight was 1041 pounds donated,” she said, Break down per Jazzercise location is as follows: Avon Jazzercise 434.5 pounds, First Sunset Concert Series Kick-off Singers from twelve local communities who make up the Rocky River Community Chorus will, along with the Rocky River Community Band, kick-off Rocky River’s annual Sunset Concert Series with “A Celebration of Song.” The concert will be held in the auditorium of the Rocky River Senior Center, 21014 Hilliard Blvd. on Sun., June 5, at 7 p.m. The chorus, directed by Emily Ortolano, will include many songs by the Sherman brothers who composed music for the Disney movies and arranged by accompanist, Andrew Bacik.
