Letter from the President of the Friends of Avon Public Library
December 2015
Dear Friends,
It has been a busy and successful fall!
The sold-out Literary Luncheon featuring Christina Baker Kline was enjoyed by all. Christina was an engaging
speaker and the Golf Club of Avon accommodated us with a delicious meal. Many thanks to the very organized
committee who put it together! I know they are already working on another great author for next year.
Some great Children’s programs helped to celebrate the Library’s Birthday this month, including Science Tellers,
Nappy’s Puppets, cupcakes and a visit from Paddington Bear!
We are pleased to report that the Annual Book Sale was a great success as well, raising funds which will all go right
back to support the library, thanks to our busy sorters and many volunteers at the sale. Special thanks to Boy Scout
Troop 274 and the boys at Avon Old Farms School for their help in setting up and breaking down the event.
We appreciate your donations of books! While we continue to collect and sort, we respectfully ask that you presort
your books before you drop them off. You can recycle them at home if they are obsolete (technology, textbooks) or dated.
Books that have been stored in a basement or attic have odors which contaminate our other books, making them
unsellable. Please donate with care!
September is the beginning of our membership year for the Friends. Please remember to renew your membership! We
have a great lineup of Sundays at Three Concerts (see inside) and other programming which is supported by your
donation.
The Friends Board recently approved items on the Librarians’ Wish List. See our upcoming March newsletter for
details on these requests which are supported by membership donations and the Book Sale.
Wishing you safe and Happy Holidays, where you can take some time to enjoy a good book!

Legendary Jazz Pianist Donn Trenner To Kick Off 2016 Winter Concert Series
The Friends of the Library have set January 10 as the opening date of their series of musical
programs, Sundays at Three. On tap for an hour of music and memories are two
extraordinary artists (and very nice people), pianist Donn Trenner and bassist Mike Asetta.
When Donn Trenner took his first piano lesson at the age of six, little could he imagine the
musical journey he was starting out on. Now, more than 80 years later - and still playing - he
can look back on a globe-circling career that saw him become one of the most sought-after
pianists in the big band and Bebop jazz eras. The youngster from New Haven played with the
great bands led by Buddy Morrow, Charlie Barnet and Jerry Gray, among others, and teamed
up with such jazz immortals as Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Stan Getz. But he may be best
known to millions of popular music fans as the piano behind such singers as Nancy Wilson,
Lena Horne, Anita O’Day and Ann-Margret. Donn also led the house band for the Steve Allen Show on NBC, toured with
Bob Hope on six of his international Christmas shows, and appeared on more than 100 recordings. He recounts his
remarkable career in a just-released memoir, Leave It to Me…My Life in Music, copies of which will be available for sale and
signing after the performance.
Bassist Mike Asetta, a classically trained musician, is a masterful improviser whose international touring began early in his
career, ranging around the globe from Carnegie Hall to Korea’s Seoul Arts Center. He has been collaborating with Donn
Trenner for nearly 20 years. This will be Mike’s second appearance at the library.
The free, one-hour program starts promptly at 3:00 p.m. in the library’s Community Room. Seating is on a first-come, firstserved basis. Doors open at 2:30. Light refreshments and a book signing following the program.
Additional programs in the series:
January 24 - pianist Paul Bisaccia
February 7 - The Ross Novgrad Jazz Trio
February 21 - classical pianist Joon Yoon
March 6 - The Lost Acres String Band
March 20 – U.S. Coast Guard Woodwind Quintet
April 3 - The Farella Duo: pianist Pi-Hsun Shih & cellist Tanya Anasimova
