B C D A B - Avon Public Schools
The Friday Falcon
Volume II, Issue 32
May 8, 2015
Dear Avon High School Families,
New members of the Avon High School chapter of the National Honor Society
were inducted this past Wednesday during an evening ceremony in the
auditorium. Eligible students participated in an application process that aims to
capture each prospective member’s commitment to the pillars of scholarship,
service, leadership, and character. The evening’s ceremony also featured
English department teacher, Cortney Fusco, as the guest speaker. NHS officers
David Lim, Molly Hamel, Katherine Stoll, Alex Lin, and Eric Selzer participated in
the ceremony that was organized by NHS co-advisors Peter O’Sullivan and Cari
Andross. Congratulations to the seventy-seven newest inductees.
Because one induction ceremony per week is not quite enough, on Thursday
evening twenty-eight students were inducted to the newly formed chapter of
the French National Honor Society at Avon High School. The evening began
with an amazing performance from AHS senior, Katie Holobinko (soprano), as
well as guest artist, Patrick Baker (tenor), with both vocalists being
accompanied by Mrs. Susan Hart. The keynote speaker was Carol Fabricant, a
former student of Madame Brand. Carol is currently in the workforce with a
position that requires her use of French on a daily basis. She shared a message of commitment, and risk
taking while encouraging students to continue their study of French as it has a significant place in global
society. A special thank you to Mrs. Brand, Mr. Dridi, and Ms. Rose for their combined efforts in making
this evening a success. A special thank you to Mrs. Brand for bringing the French Honor Society to Avon
High School.
Several of my friends outside of education love to ask me if “things are
winding down” this time of year. The answer to that is unequivocally,
no. This is actually the time of year when things are winding up quite a
bit. We have many celebratory events scheduled and the energy and
excitement in the building runs high. Unfortunately, it is the time of
year when some students dip their toes in puddles, and sometimes
giant lakes of bad decisions. One recent example I can share is an influx
of food deliveries to the high school with the understanding of “text me when you get here”. While this is
clever, it is not okay. We are trying to convey this message to all students, but please reiterate this
message at home. I also ask that you support security and administration when we direct the kind delivery
people back to their cars, and redirect our AHS students back to the cafeteria.
I hope you are able to enjoy a restful weekend.

substantive learning, develop effective leadership, and demonstrate humane character.
This past Sunday, seniors Eric Selzer and Sara Molly Hamel were recognized by the Connecticut
Association of Schools and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletics Association as Avon High School’s
scholar athletes. This special recognition is earned by two students from each high school in
Connecticut for exemplary performance as scholars and athletes. Additionally, honorees are recognized
for their high levels of self-discipline, integrity, and courage. This fall, Eric will be attending the
University of Pennsylvania and Molly will be attending Georgetown University.

Sierra Club
The Avon High School Sierra Club will host its
7th annual Eco-Night/Eco Fair tonight, Friday,
May 8th, from 5:30 to 9 in the high school
gallery. As usual, they will have vendors such as Farmer's Cow, Whole Foods,
Flatbread Pizza, Ben and Jerry's, Ten Thousand Villages, and a few activity tables
such as bracelet making, henna, face-painting, and smoothies/trail-mix. Cost of
admission is 3.00.
Each year, student
musicians compete in
local, regional, state,
New England and
National
competitions. We have
been fortunate at Avon
to have a dedicated and
exceptional group of
students who, with years
of lessons, practices and
concerts have excelled in
their respective
instruments. Six students were selected to proudly represent AHS at the
Connecticut Music Educators Association’s ALL STATE Music Festival on May 2nd
at the CT Convention Center. Please join us in congratulating Katherine Stoll
(viola), Emily Guersch (clarinet), Devon McLane (voice), Courtney Mollo (clarinet),
Katie Holobinko (voice) and Emily Kane (bassoon).

Avon - Barcelona Exchange 2015-16
For the past 16 years, Avon High and the Deutsche Schule of Barcelona (DSB)
have shared in a yearly exchange program. During the coming school year, Avon
families will host students from Spain in September and the DSB families will
return the favor in February. Avon students will enjoy a variety of experiences
while in Spain including world class museums, architectural treasures, hiking in
the mountains, and most importantly an unmatched cultural experience living
with families in one of the most exciting cities in Europe. The trip is open to all
students regardless of languages studied, but limited to 20 participants. Students
are required to host a student from Barcelona. The cost for the Avon students
will be approximately $2650 depending on airfare charges. Positions on the trip
will be given first come first served following the information meeting.
Tentative Exchange Dates:
Barcelona in Avon:
September 28 – October 5
Avon in Barcelona:
February 11-20
Information Meeting for Parents and Students:

Hartford Stage Presents Project: Transform
Come see the performance of Project Transform! Students from around the
state had the opportunity to work with special guest artist James Lecesne and
with Hartford Stage teaching artist Natalie Pertz to create and perform an
original theatre piece based on change the group wanted to see in the world.

This month brings an explosion of flowers resulting from all those April showers,
the excitement of knowing it’s the second-to-last calendar month in the school
year, and AP exams!
If your child is taking an AP exam, the absence will be entered as APP (Approved
School Absence), for the classes during the exam (morning sessions end
at 12:00pm, afternoon sessions begin at 11:30), and will not count against them
for attendance purposes. Students are expected to attend class before or after
AP testing periods; any other time missed must be called in as an excused
absence, as is the case on any school day.
Additionally, students leaving for the afternoon exams or arriving after the
morning session ends should sign in and out with the main office staff.
Should you have questions about this or any attendance-related matter, please
call Carolyn Taylor at (860) 404-4746, or email her at [email protected].
