C D A B C - Avon Public Schools
The Friday Falcon Volume II, Issue 28 April 10, 2015 Dear Avon High School Families, Thank you to the many parents that were able to join us for Rosalind Wiseman’s appearance earlier this week at Avon High School. We were fortunate to be Rosalind’s one Connecticut stop during her professional travels this year. She framed the evening with the question “How can a community be at its best in a moment of conflict?” From there, she unpacked the many challenges students face during their teenage years. This appearance was made possible by the Avon Education Foundation, Avon Youth Services, the Avon High School PTO, and the Avon Middle School PTO. The students also benefited from school assemblies that resonated with them on many levels. The presentations put in perspective that the challenges our children are facing on a regular basis are not terribly different than the challenges adults face. We will continue to process her presentation points in Advisory over the next several weeks. Please ask your child what they thought of the assembly should the opportunity present itself. Spring parent/teacher conferences are right around the corner. While meeting with your child’s teachers remains a recommended strategy to support learning, conferences at this time of year are especially valuable if your child is struggling in a course. Below are the step by step instructions for scheduling conferences. 1. Visit the Avon High School homepage by clicking here or select the Online Scheduler icon below. 2. From the online scheduler homepage, do the following: a. Choose Avon High School from the dropdown menu and c lick “Go”. b. Enter the school password: avon high school c. Enter your student’s ID. If you do not know their Student ID, use the LOOKUP STUDENT ID button to access the system. d. Verify the student’s birthdate. e. A list of your child’s teachers will be displayed. Check the box next to the name of each teacher you would like to meet with. f. If you have more than one student in the school, you can see all of your students’ teachers’ schedules at one time by answering YES to “Do you want to schedule conferences for another student?” If you do not have another child at AHS, click NO. g. You will see the available time slots for each teacher you selected. h. Select the times that work best for your schedule. i. It is recommended that you enter your e-mail address for a reminder. Your e-mail address will be kept private. j. Once you are finished, confirm your appointment details and print your conference schedule. 3. Write down the confirmation number should you need it to cancel an appointment. I hope you are able to enjoy a restful weekend. 4/13/15 4/14/15 4/15/15 4/16/15 4/17/15 C D A B C Day Day Day Day (Advisory) Day ________________________________________________________________________________ Avon High School is a student centered community that empowers each member to engage in authentic and substantive learning, develop effective leadership, and demonstrate humane character. Each year, The Connecticut Association of School (CAS) recognizes two students for outstanding achievement in the arts during their high school experience. This year, Emily Guersch and Emily Nelson were chosen as honorees from Avon High School. Students were joined by their parents, nominating teachers Mr. Culbertson and Mrs. Glick, as well as Mr. Tranberg and Ms. Lawson. In addition to the individual student recognition, students enjoyed a keynote address by radio personality Jerry Kristopher. Next year, Emily Guersch will study clarinet at Wheaton College and Emily Nelson is working on making her final decision in the coming days. Congratulations to both seniors on their artistic accomplishments and this special recognition. 4:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 6:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 4:30 p.m. 3:45 p.m. 3:30 p.m. 4/13 4/13 4/13 4/14 4/14 4/14 4/14 4/14 4/15 4/15 4/15 4/15 4/16 4/16 4/16 4/16 4/17 4/17 4/18 4/18 V Baseball Granby Memorial Home - Buckingham Field V Boys Tennis Classical Magnet Home - Thompson Brook School V Girls Tennis Classical Magnet Away - Elizabeth Park V Baseball Ellington Home - Buckingham Field V Boys Golf Stafford Home - Blue Fox Run V Boys Lacrosse Somers Away - Somers High School V Girls Lacrosse Somers Home - Avon High School V Softball Ellington Away - Ellington High School V Boys Outdoor Track SMSA, East Windsor Home - Avon High School V Boys Tennis Windsor Locks Away - Windsor Locks High School V Girls Outdoor Track SMSA, East Windsor Home - Avon High School V Girls Tennis Windsor Locks Home - Avon Middle School V Baseball Somers Away - Somers High School V Boys Golf Lewis Mills Home - Blue Fox Run V Girls Lacrosse Granby Memorial Away - Granby Memorial High School V Softball Somers Home - Fisher Meadow V Boys Lacrosse Granby Memorial Home - Buckingham Field V Girls Tennis Coventry Away - Coventry High School V Baseball Farmington Home - Buckingham Field V Softball Farmington Home - Fisher Meadow ________________________________________________________________________________ Avon High School is a student centered community that empowers each member to engage in authentic and substantive learning, develop effective leadership, and demonstrate humane character. Spring is finally arriving! Despite the fact that cooler temperatures are hanging on for dear life, we are told by our local meteorologists that sunnier days are on the way. With warmer temperatures comes the approach of the fourth and final quarter of this school year, which seems inconceivable! Please keep the following in mind as you and your children gear up for the last 25% of the year: All full-day absences for students should be called in by 9:00am. An automated call goes out at 10:00am, which can serve as a reminder, but if unexcused absences are not resolved by the end of the day, a second round of calls goes out around 6:00pm. Any unexcused absence remaining the next day may be subject to disciplinary action if not cleared through the attendance office. Should your child have ten or more absences in any one class, even those excused by a parent, there is the potential for credit loss in that class. An exception to this policy are absences that are verified by a doctor. If your child has visited the doctor and missed any classes as a result, please get those doctors’ notes in sooner than later, to avoid the need to produce them at the end of the school year. Just a reminder that seniors are only allowed to sign out for privileges during double opens, or two consecutive single classes. If they leave during an open for an appointment but are missing all or part of a class, they must sign in or out in the main office, with advance parental permission. Seniors should not be leaving for privileges during their 30 minute lunch block, or during single opens. We are energized and excited for the remainder of the school year, and we hope you are too! Should you have any attendance-related questions, please call Carolyn Taylor at (860) 404-4746, or email her at [email protected]. Happy Spring! Avon High School Acoustic Night April 10 at 7:00 PM in the AHS Gallery Come enjoy the musical talents of our students with some special guest faculty performances. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of Avon Music Education (FAME) Matt White Memorial Matt White was a wonderful kind and gentle man. We all knew Matt and his infectious smile. Whether we knew him as a friend, bus driver, or fellow employee, he made us feel welcome. Matt passed away in late February and the AHS community would like to honor him by purchasing and dedicating an 8’ Bench to be placed outside the gyms, along the side of the HS where the sports buses pick up our teams. If you would like to help fund the bench, any amount will be accepted, please send to Diana Cesaro, 8 Orchard Farms Lane, Avon, CT 06001 or drop by the AD office in envelope marked Matt White Memorial. We will have a dedication ceremony as soon as the bench is purchased.
