William A. Young, Jr. is embracing his
new role as President and CEO of St. John
Medical Center with enthusiasm, passion,
energy and commitment.
“St. John Medical Center has been making a difference in the community for 30
years now, and I am proud to be a member
of such a strong organization that is filled
with first rate individuals who come together
in fulfilling the mission and serving those in
need,” says William A. Young, Jr. “Our physicians, volunteers and employees are doing
that every day. They come together to make a
true difference in the delivery of health care.”
The announcement of Young’s appointment to his new position as president and
CEO was made in early December. He began
to report for work right away, even though
his official start-up date was Dec. 31. “I wanted to hit the ground running when I officially began on January 1, 2012,” Young says. “By
starting early, I have already met some amazing people at SJMC, and I look forward to
meeting the entire staff soon. At SJMC, there
are great people, doing great things. The entire community is fortunate to have such an
amazing team of health care professionals in
their own neighborhood.”
According to the latest financials, quality
outcomes and patient volume reports, SJMC
is doing extremely well --- better than many
other local community hospitals. “The numbers show that more and more individuals are
choosing the hospital for their care. And this
speaks volumes to our high quality of patient
care as well as our outstanding patient satisfaction scores --- people are telling us they would
return because of the superior care provided,”
Young says. “It is that high standard of service
we dedicate ourselves to, each and every day.”

the daily operations and the
medical center’s growth and
service expansion plans as it
continues to meet the health
care needs of the West Side
community.
Specifically, he will
manage the medical center’s five-year, $100-million strategic plan, which
includes modernization,
renovations and adding
specialty services and programs. Over the past year,
several strategic initiatives
have been implemented
such as opening of the UH
Neurological Institute at
SJMC; expanding and relocating the SJMC Pain Management Center; installing
2-D digital mammography
technology as well as add-
ing a state-of-the-art special procedures room.
“Thanks to this investment made by our
partners the Sisters of
Charity Health System
and University Hospitals,
we are experiencing tremendous upgrades to the
facilities as well as adding new services and programs,” Young says.
In a few weeks, SJMC
will open the SJMC Breast
Health Center. Early this
year, the campus will welcome a satellite location of
the University Hospitals
Seidman Cancer Center,
as well as the completion
of a renovated entrance
and front lobby. The medical center has also added
two new OB/GYNs to
its West Shore Women’s
Health program.
“This is a very exciting time for SJMC,”
Young adds. “We are undergoing a transformation that will further enhance our reputation as
the health care leader on
Cleveland’s West Side.”
Prior to his appointment at SJMC, Young spent
more than five years as COO
for South Pointe and Marymount hospitals. He also
worked at Humility of Mary
Health Partners where he
served four years as president of St. Joseph Health
Center in Warren, Ohio.

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is hosting a special exhibit featuring select
pieces from the 2011 EXPLORERS and eXpressions
programs, including a piece from 2011 WHS graduate
Janey Eager.
The official opening of the exhibit will be from 3
to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 22. The exhibit will be on
display on the ticketing level next to the Delta Airlines
counter, opposite the skyway that connects the parking garages to the airport. The exhibition runs through
March 1.
Eager won a blue ribbon for her piece, “Waiting On
Fate,” in the 2011 eXpressions art program.
EXPLORERS is a program that uses creativity to engage kindergarten through eighth grade students in the
study of health and wellness. Cleveland Clinic medical
professionals speak to area art classes on important health
issues and the students use creative interpretation to create
pieces of art related to the topics discussed.
The eXpressions art program utilizes the arts to engage high school students in the world of scientific research. Through project-based, peer-to-peer learning,
students produce creative interpretations of research
conducted by Cleveland Clinic summer interns. The program gives participants a deeper, real-world understanding of art and science while promoting creativity, communication, critical thinking and teamwork.

While at St. Joseph
Hospital, he oversaw an
extensive renovation program. “At St. Joseph Hospital, we had a major expansion project that replaced
all the operating rooms
and the related support
space. Of course the project
at SJMC is a much larger
scale, being a $100 million
reinvestment,” he says of
the current SJMC strategic/
modernization plans. “We
have some excellent people
who are already leading the
process, and doing a fine
job, and I look forward to
joining the work team as we
move ahead with plans.”
Before joining SJMC,
Young states that he
knew about the success
the medical center was
experiencing. “It was fortunate for me to come
into an organization that
is performing at such a
high level,” Young says. “I
have to ask myself, ‘What
are the things I can do to
support the staff and the
physicians to reach even
higher levels of success?’”
Young says he eagerly anticipates working
with the organization’s
two partners. “It is great
to have two leading health
care partners, The Sisters
of Charity Health System
and University Hospitals,
committed to this medical center,” Young adds.
“Through their reinvestment, it says a lot about
their commitment to the
organization, and to the
people in this area.”
With so much going on at SJMC, Young
agrees he must keep the
medical center’s mission
at the forefront as well as
acknowledging its Catholic roots. “I vow to make
a difference at SJMC, and
continue to take this organization on its path of
success and excellence as a
premier medical center.”

note was left, apparently
by the unknown suspect.
A 2002 Chrysler minivan was reported stolen
from a Marview Dr. apartment house lot on Dec. 23
at 1:43PM. Brook Park PD
recovered the van after it
was in a crash and abandoned on I71 on the same
day at 11:49PM. It was
heavily damaged.
An intoxicated guest
became loud and obnoxious at a Christmas party
on Dec. 25 at 12:16AM at
a Center Ridge Rd. apartment. When asked to leave,
the 23-year-old North Ridgeville man pounded on
the vestibule wall with a
bottle, and then tried to
hit the male host with the
bottle. Other guests broke
it up, but the suspect continued to shout abuse from
outside. Officers found
him behind the wheel of
a Chrysler minivan in the
parking lot. He was arrested for Physical Control of a
Motor Vehicle, Disorderly
Conduct Persisting, and Attempted Assault.
A 1993 Dodge pick-
up was abandoned after
crashing into a Columbia
Rd. mailbox on Dec. 25 at
10:04PM. It had been stolen (probably moments
before the crash) from a
Sperry Dr. hotel where it
had been parked after the
owner experienced brake
trouble. A male was seen
running from the crash, but
was not located.

Annette M. Hazapis of Westlake will become a member of the
Westlake Porter Public Library
Board of Trustees in January,
2012. She will assume the position being vacated by current
Board President Laurie Forbush.

She received her Bachelor of Arts

A 59-year-old homeless man was arrested for Domestic
Violence on Dec. 28 after a 9:42AM incident at the Westwood Rd. home of his ex-wife. He had been visiting for Christmas and got into an argument and then a fistfight with his
19-year-old son after the son drove the father home from the
father’s dentist appointment. Both had red marks on their
faces, but the father was found to be the primary aggressor.
The suspect was released on Dec. 29 after a TPO was issued.
Some unknown theater lover in NYC used a Westlake
man’s American Express card number to buy 2 tickets
($786!!! I hope they were in the front row!) via the Internet to see the Broadway production of “Spiderman: Turn

Mercy Opens Behavioral Health Unit
Mercy has opened a new, state-of-the-art behavioral
health unit at the Mercy Regional Medical Center.
The unit is one-of-a-kind in Lorain County, offering the safest, most therapeutic treatments for patients,
aimed at empowering them to recovery and improved
quality of life.
Mercy behavioral health services include crisis intervention and emergency screenings, inpatient services
for adults, chemical dependency assessments and referrals, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient
program and linkage to community resources to ensure
continuity of care. The unit includes three levels of beds
– psychiatric/medical for an aging population, high-risk/
low beds for patients at risk for falls due to psychotropic
medications and psychiatric box beds for patients under intensive care. The unit provides a collaborative care

elite dual meet tournament,
and defeated the fourth, fifth
