A visit to Portmeirion, the location for the 1960s British cult television series
'The Prisoner', is a unique and memorable experience. Portmeirion was
designed by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis. He converted the existing
house into a hotel in 1926. The income generated from the hotel funded his
project to make Portmeirion what it is today. Williams-Ellis’ village is compact,
but his clever use of arches, slopes and window sizes makes it seem larger
than it is. Take time to admire the Gothic Pavilion, Bristol Colonnade, Hercules
Hall and Belvedere. Statues, corbels and whimsical details fill every nook with
interest. The Village is set on a cliff top with views over the bay below. A walk
down to the bay brings you to the Portmerion Hotel and the Stone Boat (Amis
Reunis), with lovely views both across the bay and back up to the village itself.
