Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine
31st Annual UCLA INTENSIVE COURSE IN Geriatric Medicine & Board Review September 10-13, 2014 Los Angeles Airport Marriott Los Angeles, California Manhattan Beach Pier Join Us in Southern California An Invitation from the Course Chair Advancements in the fields of geriatric medicine and gerontology over the past few decades have been astounding. The “geriatric imperative” of an aging population is now recognized as an issue of great importance by educators, researchers, policy-makers, and politicians. The Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine and Board Review, now in its 31st year, has played an important role in stimulating interest and knowledge in geriatric medicine, psychiatry, neurology, and pharmacology. Year after year, we are impressed by the participation of our audience, and we strive to make the course reflect both recent advances in geriatrics and gerontology, and the practical experience of our faculty and participants. Whether you are new to the field of geriatrics or a seasoned clinician; whether you are here to enhance your practice or to prepare for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatric Medicine, or the Re-certification Examination; whether you are from a small practice in a rural area, or faculty in a large teaching program; we are confident you will find this course worthwhile and rewarding. The Office of Continuing Medical Education, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, and the UCLA Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology are pleased to have the collaboration of The American Geriatrics Society; the California Geriatric Education Center (CGEC); California Geriatric Society (CAGS); UCLA Academic Geriatric Resource Center; UCLA Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer’s Disease Research; UCLA Longevity Center; UCLA National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health; UCLA Older Americans Independence Center; VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System, and the VA Greater Los Angeles Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). We also appreciate the assistance of educational grants from the pharmaceutical and other companies, who are listed on a subsequent page. We have carefully chosen the topics for the 2014 course to reflect relevant issues in the state-of-the-art practice of geriatrics. In addition to numerous lectures, board review sessions, and afternoon interactive sessions, the California Geriatric Education Center is happy to offer its Intensive Course in Geriatric Pharmacy. Intensive Course participants may take advantage of any of the geriatric pharmacy sessions, which are accredited for physicians as well as pharmacists. The faculty and staff of the 31st Annual UCLA Intensive Course in Geriatric Medicine and Board Review have worked hard and long to bring you the best course we can offer. We ardently hope that your practice of geriatrics will be enhanced by this experience. Cathy A. Alessi, MD Outgoing Course Chair Professor of Medicine/Geriatric Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California Los Angeles; Director, Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System Zaldy S. Disclosure The FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific and educational programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is “truly independent” and free of commercial influence. In addition to independence, the FDA requires that non-promotional, commercially supported education be objective, balanced, and scientifically rigorous. The policy further states that all potential conflicts of interest of the CME staff and faculty be fully disclosed to the program’s participants. In addition, Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education policy now mandates that the provider adequately manages all identified potential conflicts of interest prior to the program. We at UCLA fully endorse the letter and spirit of these concepts.
