WATCH CHAINS
Terence Santry; untitled work depicting inner urban scene
720x540mm in matte glazed frame 970x720mm, signed Santry
at lower right. The vendor has listed the item as a Brighton scene
but the work evokes images more reminiscent of a northern
Melbourne suburb (Carlton, Fitzroy), or inner Sydney suburb such
as Paddington – it is known that Santry lived and worked primarily
in the Sydney area. A most impressive and large item
Terence John Santry (1910-1990) studied at the Royal Art Society
in Sydney under Anthony Dattilo Rubbo, Sydney Long, Fred Leist,
and Jack Carrington Smith. Throughout the 1930s he worked
as an illustrator and cartoonist with the Daily Telegraph, Labour
Daily and Women’s Weekly. He undertook further studies at the
Westminster School, England in 1937, and upon his return in
1939 continued with cartooning and commercial art work while
establishing himself as a painter. After WWII Santry was the
founding member of the Northwood Group, painting in and around
the Waverton area of Sydney, the group including Lloyd Rees
and George Lawrence. The 1950s were a time of great reward
for Santry, winning a number of regional awards and prizes. His
works adorn the walls of many state and regional galleries around
Australia

Russian Madonna and Child icon by Igumenya of Yaroslavl c.1827,
enamel with gold highlights on metal 99x81mm with suspension
loop, the back enamelled with Russian text on a white panel within
blue frame and gold highlights, set into a gilt timber frame which sits
neatly within a glass topped timber travel case with lock and key;
behind the icon is a letter in Russian text plus a small handwritten note
also in Russian text set within a glass holder which provides evidence
of provenance to the renowned 19th century Soloviev family, the
father Mikhailovich being a Russian historian and his son Vsevolod
a notable philosopher and mystic. An exceptionally fine piece from a
centre famous for icon production and with an interesting provenance,
having remained in the hands of the same family since the 1820s.
The note in the glass reads: “Vsevolod Soloviev 1879, 15th August,
Tsarskoe Selo. My father has been blessed with this icon of Virgin
Mary of Kazan by Igumenya in Kazan Convent in the city of Yaroslavl
on the 8th July 1827. From then on the icon has always stayed with
my father, both at home and in his later travels around Europe. In the
first year of my life (1849) I was having strong fits and when the doctor
announced that my death is inevitable the icon was hung above my
cradle and I have not parted with it ever since. It has been with me
during my trips and travels around Russia and Western Europe. After
my death I entrust my son to honor this icon as sacred family heritage
and to never part with it, as did I and my father. May Virgin Mary
protect you all from sickness and misfortune”.
