Freedom Stories Social Justice
On the evening of Wednesday 29 July, Ms Morello, Mrs
Kuppe, Dr Loughnane and some of the Year 12 Social
Justice Students went to watch ‘Freedom Stories’ at the
Nova Cinemas. The documentary showcased the lives of
many refugees who spent years in Australian detention
centres. Those featured in the film displayed years of
resilience in order to build a secure life and become
Australian citizens who contribute to our society.
Viewing the documentary

Victorian Year 8 Mathematics
Games Day
All students were trying their best to get as many points
as possible and tensions were high. Despite it being very
competitive it was enjoyable and the activities were
made as engaging as possible.
On Wednesday 29 July I was privileged to represent
Parade College at the 19th Annual Year 8 Maths Games
Day hosted at Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School,
along with seven other boys from my year level.
Despite it being a student-free day at Parade College,
we were eager to do our best and represent the College
well.
The competition was very well organised by the hosts,
with 356 students from all over Victoria at the event.
Altogether there were 89 teams each consisting of four
students. It was organised by the Mathematics
Association of Victoria and sponsored by Oxford,
Cambridge and CAS.
Our group of eight was split into two teams of four. The
two groups were Pinidu Chandrasekera H15, Antony Di
Placido H13, Chanuka Wijesinghe L14, Glory Zheng T17
in one group, and the other group was Enoch Appathurai
H11, Matthew Dell' Albani L21, Anton Barbaro B13 and
Daniel Lay L16.
Throughout the day, teams undertook several activities
for which points were accordingly allocated. The
activities were separated into blocks of approximately 30
to 40 minutes each. There were two booklets of problem
solving questions which we had to complete as a team
before going head-to-head with other schools in several
mathematics games.
At the end of the day, the top three teams were
announced and awarded with prizes. Antony, Chanuka,
Glory and I were lucky enough to finish in second place!
Overall, it was a very successful and enjoyable
endeavour for all involved.

Fundraising Helping Fight Motor Neurone Disease
Crushin’ It For Crowie
On Thursday 6 August, students from Mr Derek Rylah’s Bricklaying class ran a BBQ and soft drink can sale at the
Bundoora Campus. This was the motivation of Nicholas Putnam, Year 11 L10, who wanted to raise money in support for
the charity Motor Neurone Disease Victoria.
Mr Paul Crowe has been a teacher here at Parade since 1984 and was diagnosed with MND earlier this year. Nicholas
was very keen to do something to support and contribute. He said, “We decided as a whole that we wanted to show our
support for Mr Crowe and others who suffer from Motor Neurone Disease. And it was encouraging to see the school unite
and come together as a community to support one of their own during tough times”.
Many thanks to Derek Rylah and his class for getting the BBQ up and running, and to Ms Anne-Marie Morello and
Community Action for donating the cans to sell on the day.
The event was a huge success with $420 raised and donated to MND Victoria via the ‘Crushin It For Crowie’ fundraiser
page.
If anyone would like to donate to this fantastic charity that is researching a cure, please go to this link: https://

Together, the Parade community has raised over $7500 for MND Victoria.
