are mill finish as a standard. However, they are also available in a variety of anodized colors A (.008). We do not recommend anodizing surfaces that will come in contact with people traffic, for this will affect the anodized surfaces. Anodizing is best used for ventilation purposes in order to blend in with existing design. Frames: Bolar (Canada) Inc. offers a wide variety of frames such as stainless steel, brass, steel. These are available only for the "AD" type frames. On the "VV" type we may provide you with a cap of such materials, in order to improve design. Pans: Pans are offered in a variety of materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, brass or galvanized steel. Pans of 22 gauge are recommended, other gauges in stock. Stainless steel offers the maximum durability. The depth of our pans can be modified as per your specifications. POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS Besides the obvious Bolar grilles have a wide variety of applications. They are used in entrance ways in order to provide cleaner and safer vestibules, by removing corrosive salt and water. They are used as vents in large and small sizes. Model BA-2 provides high air circulation without the backdraft effects. The spacing can be adjusted to your specification in order to obtain proper air circulation. They can be reinforced so as to accept car circulation. eg: shopping mall expositions, or forklift traffic eg: warehouses (BA-1-3-HL) etc. Unaffected by water it is a highly durable drainage cover providing for high water circulation and anti-slip surface. They are also used as tree grates in shopping malls, restaurants etc. Model BSA-1 will provide a great design, anti-slip surface, and will keep papers, and people, out of tree wells. Thus cutting down maintenance time and increasing safety. Model BSP-90 is specially designed for shower and sauna uses. It is composed of a soft flexible, rounded 55/65 vinyl with an "anti-fungal" protection. This provides a soft anti-slip surface that is easily cleaned. It is also ideal as pool contours. All grilles can be cut to irregular shapes, so as to match floor design. You are not limited to rectangles. Triangular or even rounded shapes can be manufactured. With our model BA-2, the blades can even be shaped in a circular fashion. This makes it perfect for revolving door applications. If an irregular shape is needed for your project, the hinges and lock (option #1) cannot be installed, only security lock set on 4 corners. NOTE: For circular areas a template would be required to ensure a precise fit on existing conditions. In some cases it may be impossible to include hinges and lock notch, please check with your representative. WE ALSO MANUFACTURE ROOF HATCHES. ACCESSORIES/OPTIONS Option #1: Hinges and lock notch: (except on irregular shape) All sections of grille will be supplied with hinges and lock notch. The hinges and lock notch will be fabricated in stainless steel and installed on the grille by the manufacturer. They will be attached to the frame by the general contractor and verified by the architect prior to final approbation. Option #2: Hinges and lock notch with GB-46 lock downs: (except on irregular shape) All sections of grilles will be supplied with a combination hinges/lock notch and lock downs model GB-46. The hinges and lock notch will be fabricated in stainless steel and installed on the grille by the manufacturer. The lock downs will be fabricated of galvanized steel and Teflon, they will be attached to the grille sections by the manufacturer. The lock downs will be supplied with a special key for easy of operation (one per vestibule). All lock downs have to be greased (BSRS 2000 water resistant)) at the time of installation by the general contractor. We suggest they be greased at least 4 times a year. All systems are to be verified by the architect prior to final approbation. Option #3: Lock downs GB-46 (4 per grilles): All sections of grille will be supplied with a lock downs mechanism GB-46 (4 per sections of grille). The lock downs will be fabricated of galvanized stele and Teflon, they will be attached to the grille sections by the manufacturer. The lock downs will be supplied with a special key for easy of operation (one per vestibule). All lock downs have to be greased (BSRS 2000 water resistant)) at the time of installation by the general contractor. We suggest they be greased at least 4 times a year. All systems are to be verified by the architect prior to final approbation. Option #4: Plates and screws: Installed by the manufacturer at each sections corner, they must be attached to the frame by the general contractor using the screws supplied by the manufacturer. Installation to be verified by the architect prior to final approbation. 2 Printing >>> Option #5: Lifting hooks: All grilles will be supplied with lifting hooks in order to provide easy lifting of sections without efforts or risk of damaging the grille surfaces (one per vestibule). NOTE: They will not be incorporated to each sections in order to minimize unauthorized manipulations of grilles, and thus prevent possible accidents. Option #6: Sound gasket: All frame sections will be supplied with a sound gasket, as per manufacturer's specifications. The sound gasket's function will be to buffer noise and vibrations that could occur between frames and blades. This section is not a standard, you have to specify if needed. section: 12482 buyline: 8254 3 Printing >>> BA-5 Foot grilles: 1) To supply and install to location and sizes Bolar Isomat manufactured under a proven quality system model BA-5 as manufactured by: Bolar Canada Inc. 50 Omer de Serres Blainville, Québec J7C 5H2 Tel: 450-435-7385 OR 1-800-552-6527 Fax: 450-435-3600 OR 1-800-667-3660 2) All aluminum components shall be extruded aluminum alloy 6061-T6 3) Deflection under live load: The Isomat BA-5 shall be so conceived so as to accept a minimum uniform load of 120 Newton applied over a 4 inch square (100mm) surface in order to obtain a 1/180" deflection over a 2'-0" (610mm) span. 4) The perimeter frames shall be "˚ " inverted such as model "WW" by Bolar, for anchoring in concrete. OR The perimeter frames shall be " Î " such as model "WW"I by Bolar, for anchoring in concrete. OR The mat will be supplied with a "SSA" type frame by Bolar. Consisting of an anti-slip aluminum extrusion with beveled edge, attached to the mat on two surfaces. 5) The blades of the BA-5 matting are grooved and made from aluminum alloy 6063-T5. The grooves ensure that it is slip resistant. The blades are joined together by a flexible vinyl hinge which allows the matting to be rolled during maintenance. This same vinyl link protects floor finishes against scratches and ensures that the product makes no noise when people walk on it. Option #1 is available on request to clip the vinyl link every 300 mm (12 in) to allow water to drip into the drain when necessary. 6) Spacing between blades and vinyl hinge shall be so as to meet manufacturer's specifications for the minimum weight capacity. Foot grille will be manufactured in sections so as to increase ease of maintenance. 7) The frames will be supplied without a pan. A coat of waterproofing is to be applied to the concrete base to avoid water infiltration (by others). 8) The sections shall have a friction coefficient of 0,92 and a cleaning efficiency of 76 %, percentage of opening shall be 10 % 9) All sections shall be in accordance with ASTM B117 norms, and be able to sustain a 1000 hours salt fog without any notable changes. 10) Manufacturer shall be able to confirm this data and be able to supply architect with all necessary reports and shop drawings. Installation: 1) The Isomat BA-5 sections will be installed in their frames, as a last item, to prevent damages during construction. Install all foot grilles, square and level with finished floor so as to permit easy manipulation of all sections. All frame members and intermediary supports are to be level and well supported on all their lengths in order to avoid any deflection over a long term period. 2) All frames are to be thoroughly cleaned before installing any grille section in order for them not to exceed finished floor level. Protect grilles from construction traffic. For sections larger than 6'-0 * 8'-0 (1828mm x 2438mm) a mechanical joint is to be provided, (if specified). Installation: 1) The foot-grille sections will be installed in their frames, as a last item, to prevent damages during construction. Install all foot grilles, square and level with finished floor so as to permit easy manipulation of all sections. All frame members and intermediary supports are to be level and well supported on all their lengths in order to avoid any deflection over a long term period. 2) All frames and pans are to be thoroughly cleaned before installing any grille section in order for them not to exceed finished floor level. All sound gaskets damaged during installation, are to be replaced before final inspection. Protect grilles from construction traffic. Install all hinges, (if required). Verify that all latches are in a closed position, and properly greased (if required). ACCESSORIES/OPTIONS Option #1: Hinges and lock notch: All sections of grille will be supplied with hinges and lock notch. The hinges and lock notch will be fabricated in stainless steel and installed on the grille by the manufacturer. The sound gasket's function will be to buffer noise and vibrations that could occur between frames and blades. 54 Printing >>> CLEANING PROCEDURES To maintain the quality of the product and increase it's durability for a great number of years we suggest you apply the following procedures General: 1- The cleaning of the frames and pans should be done twice a week during the winter season and by-monthly at all other times. 2- Each time you clean your frames and pans, make sure there are no residue or particles between the frame members and the grilles themselves. If this step is not taken, the grates could suffer permanent damage over time. 3- If the units are attached to a drain you should ensure that nothing is blocking the water flow to the drain. 4- The grilles must be cleaned of all debris witch could be stuck between the blades in order to keep all parts straight and properly working. 5- NEVER APPLY WAX or other polishing products to the surface of the grilles, this would create a high risk area on which people would trip and could badly hurt themselves. SPECIFICS: 6- All aluminum models should be cleaned with a soapy solution and left to dry. 7- All aluminum surfaced grilles should be cleaned with a mild soap solution and wiped dry. 8- All abrasive surfaced grilles should be freed of all debris with a small plastic scraper and cleaned with a mild soap solution, then left to dry. 9- All models with a carpet insertion will have to be cleaned according to the carpet manufacturer's recommendations such as described in pages ****** Options: 10- When cleaning all grates, the hinges and lock mechanism should be inspected to ensure that all parts are properly attached to the frame and are functioning properly. All latches should be inspected and greased with water resistant grease such as BSRS 2000. Any unit not functioning properly should be replaced to avoid further problems. 55 Printing >>> INTERFACE, FLOORING SYSTEMS CANADA GENERAL MAINTENANCE GUIDE OCTOBER 1990 INTRODUCTION The major purpose of the XYZ Company carpet tile maintenance program is to preserve, as nearly as practical, the original beauty and appearance of the carpet and to prolong its useful life. Your maintenance program thus assists in optimizing the investment in the carpet tile system. This program confines the majority of maintenance efforts to the areas needing the most attention. Typical trouble spots are those track-off areas that collect foot soil tracked in from outdoors or from hard surface floors indoors. Also requiring attention are funnel areas where foot traffic is squeezed through concentrated areas such as doorways, stairwells and in front of drinking fountains. This program recommends preventive measures, cleaning equipment and compatible general cleaning agents, as well as cleaning agents for stain and spot removal for the various substances to which the carpet may be exposed. The program establishes cleaning frequencies on a daily, weekly, monthly or longer cycle basis for types of cleaning systems applicable to specific areas of the building. PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE The most effective element in a building maintenance program is proper attention to the preventive measures that are available to the building owner. Successful restraints begin with careful selection of track-off systems used in entryways and with the prevention of tracking wax, dirt and other foreign matter from other floor surfaces into transitional areas. To reduce interior maintenance costs, soil should be kept out of the building and off the carpet. Preventive maintenance measures could include the use of Interface soil-trapping Foyer Tiles in entryways and track-off areas, protective coverings for floors in certain areas and strict rules for confining or eliminating sources of such risks. Another preventive measure facilitated by the free-lay carpet tile is a planned system of rotation of tiles to minimize the effect of traffic patterns. VACUUM CLEANING AND PILE LIFTING 1) VACUUMING Machines with cylinder brushes or brush and beater-bar combinations should be used. The vacuum equipment must be set so that brushes are in contact with the pile surface. Twin motor machines with independent motors for suction and brushing are preferred for this task. Unless power heads are used, canister type machines are generally not recommended. Vacuum cleaning not only removes soil from the carpet, but also lifts and restores the pile. Areas to be vacuumed should be divided into three separate groups: heavy, medium and light traffic areas. Heavy traffic areas such as lobbies, entryways and areas subject to immediate off-the-street traffic should be vacuumed daily or twice daily, depending on weather conditions. Often, the need for vacuuming can be determined by visual inspection. Frequent vacuuming in heavy traffic areas will eliminate much of the soil and prevent it from tracking onto other areas, thereby reducing vacuuming time in other areas. Light traffic areas usually require vacuuming once or twice weekly. 2) PILE LIFTING: At least once a week in heavily used areas, a pile-lifter should be used to "open up" the pile and remove buried soil. A pile-lifter should also be used to precondition carpet for general cleaning. The pile-lifter is also valuable for lifting crushed pile in heavy traffic areas and for loosening caked-on solids such as mud and food. For best results, the machine should be applied against the lay of the pile. Where the maintenance schedule calls for pile lifting, it may substitute for vacuuming. TILE REPLACEMENT AND ROTATION: Some carpet tiles may become so badly stained or damaged to the point that normal cleaning methods are inadequate. These may be replaced from shelf stock. A tile is removed from the floor by slipping a knife under one corner and peeling the tile from the floor. Care must be taken when installing the replacement tile to ensure that the tile direction of existing tiles is matched by the replacement tile. Arrows on the reverse side of INTERFACE products assist in determining pile directions. The face pile of the surrounding tiles should be brushed upright and the replacement tile should be fitted carefully to prevent pile fibers from becoming trapped between tile joints. A carpet tile taken from shelf stock will have a newer appearance than the one being replaced. Normally, the newness will disappear within a matter of weeks. But should the new tile stand out in sharp contrast to the surrounding tiles in a highly visible area, the owner will find it desirable to shuffle several tiles a "musical chair" fashion. The new tile goes into a less visible area, while the tiles that have aged with use are placed in the 56 Printing >>> more visible area. Rotation of tiles in heavy traffic areas should be managed in much the same way as replacements. Tiles are moved from no traffic to moderate traffic areas. Tiles subjected to heavy traffic should not be exchanged with tiles that are new or that have received few traffic. Shelf stock must be worked into the rotational plan so that it ages with the rest of the carpet. For optimum results, tile rotation needs to be planned in conjunction with and always prior to a general cleaning. The cleaning process helps blend in the disturbed areas. The specifications for such a rotational program will be dependent on the study of actual carpet usage and resulting traffic patterns. The rotational plan requires a high degree of discipline. The implementation of such a plan is recommended only if management is committed to this concept for prolonging the useful life of the carpet. Such commitment must extend to providing adequate staff. CLEANING CHEMICALS In any maintenance program, care must be taken in choosing cleaning chemicals. Cleaning chemicals should fall in the range of 4 pH to 8 pH, but preferably as close to neutral as possible. Spotting chemicals will, of necessity, be of high pH value, but these must be used sparingly and should be flushed out with plain water after the spot has been treated. In addition, cleaning chemicals should be tested for sticky residues which promote re-soiling. As a test, evaporate a chemical solution in a flat dish. If the residue is dry and flaky or powder, it may be used. Do not use detergents that evaporate to a sticky residue, as these will stick to carpet fibers. Extraction cleaning chemicals should not contain silicone defoamers. These defoamers, if used, should be poured directly into the recovery tank. SPOT CLEANING: Effective soil removal procedures are an integral part of the program. Special attention is given to high-risk sources of spills and stains such as washroom and vending areas with coffee machines. Spots and stains are easily removed, if dealt with immediately. Spills only become stains when allowed to dry; therefore, it is essential to deal with spills promptly. When a spot is identifiable, an appropriate stain remover may be selected. Removal of unidentifiable stains require a careful approach. If the stain is dry, brush the area with a stiff bristle brush to remove the excess solids. Then, using water and a soft, absorbent cloth, gently agitate the pile surface, working from the outer edge of the stain to its center. Blot the area dry and check for effectiveness of stain removal. Repeat if necessary. If the stain persists, repeat the process using a mild detergent solution. If the stain is still evident, proceed to the use of a proven dry cleaning fluid, also applied with a soft, white absorbent cloth. Never pour a solvent directly onto a carpet tile; permanent damage to the backing structure will result. When using solvents, make sure the area is well-ventilated and prohibit any smoking. INTERFACE strongly recommends using a hot-water extractor to remove residues from the treated areas, after spot removal has been completed. In addition to a regular spot removal program, INTERFACE suggests that the program include removal activities prior to carpet cleaning. Spot cleaning chemicals required: 1) Acid-based for coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc. 2) Solvents for tar, grease, oil, etc. 3) Chewing gum remover for chewing gum. Use as directed. 4) Normal traffic lane pre-sprayer, for most foods, traffic soiling, water-based stains, etc. Remember, flush out all treated spots with the hot water extraction method. If obtaining safe cleaning chemicals is difficult, check the IMAG range. HOT WATER EXTRACTION 1) Vacuum and pre-spot before cleaning. 2) Use traffic lane pre-spray sparingly. 3) Apply minimum amounts of cleaning solution by moving applicator swiftly and evenly across surface. 4) Be sure that at least 75% of cleaning fluid is recovered. 5) Mix chemicals carefully, AND DO NOT EXCEED CONCENTRATION RECOMMENDED BY CHEMICAL MANUFACTURER. Mostly, extraction systems tend to lift the pile surface. However, if it is determined that the pile is becoming compacted, than the carpet should be pile lifted after cleaning and after it becomes dry. Rotary cleaning is not a preferred method of cleaning. It is, however, effective when the following procedures are followed: 1) Vacuum before cleaning, then pre-spot. 2) Clean, using recommended chemicals and traffic sprays in strengths recommended by chemical manufacturers. 3) Pile lift after cleaning. 4) Every 4th cleaning or so, depending on residue build-up, substitute an extraction system and proceed as per the directions outlined under "Hot Water Extraction". 57 Printing >>> DRY FOAM EXTRACTION Dry foam cleaning is not a preferred method. It is effective when the following procedures are followed: 1) Use only reel type machines - not rotary. 2) Vacuum before cleaning, then pre-spot. 3) Clean using recommended chemicals and traffic sprays in strengths recommended by chemical manufacturers. 4) Pile lift after cleaning. 5) Approximately every 4th cleaning, substitute and extraction system and proceed as per directions outlined under "Hot Water Extraction." DRY POWDER Use of the HOST system is recommended, using the following procedures: 1) Vacuum and pre-spot. 2) Spread powder per manufacturer's instructions. THERMALLY PIGMENTED YARNS (solution dyeing) In our quest for ultimate performance, INTERFACE offers a complete range of products manufactured with Thermally Pigmented yarns. These fibershave incredible fastness properties and can withstand cleaning by very aggressive chemical substances. STAIN REMOVAL PROCEDURE: 1) If the spill is still wet, carefully blot until no trace of the stain is found on the toweling. Extraction with a wet vacuum or extraction unit is best. 2) Apply a neutral or acid pH detergent directly to the spot, being careful not to overwet and spread the stain. Gently massage the fibers, working from the outer edge towards the center of the stain. Allow the detergent to work approximately one minute, than blot until no trace of the stain is found on the toweling. 3) Repeat step 2 until no trace of the stain will transfer onto the toweling. 4) Apply white vinegar to the stain if any remains and allow to work a few minutes, than blot well. 5) If any stain remains, saturate the stain with 100% household bleach (5.25%) and let stand for 30 minutes to one hour, or until the stain is removed, whichever occurs first. 6) Rinse with clean water at least three times, blotting well after each rinsing, again, if extraction is available, this is preferred. Task force of performing tests for Products Division SUMMARY The customer GRILLAGE Bolar Inc. anxious to know more about the physical characteristics of its product (foot grille) has called upon the CRIQ (Quebec Industrial Research Center). Following this request, the CRIQ has evaluated 30 foot grilles on six (6) different tests. See reports PRT-85-117 and PRT-89-052. The results of these tests have shown that: -For the same grille, the friction coefficient varies from one type of shoe to the other. As for the grille, the principal variation is noted on the vinyl covered grille which, when wet offers a better friction coefficient than the aluminum or the carpet. -The percentage of opening varies from 9% to 62%. -The deflection under live load varies from one grille to the other and, of course, from one span to the other. Apart from models BC-2,BV-2,BSV2 , the charges vary from 730 to 4610 Newton. -The distortion under lateral charge shows that certain grilles have been badly damaged whereas others were only slightly damaged. The residual distortion, as well as the plastic energy deformation are proportional to the damages caused by the charge. -The salt fog test fog has made the aluminum dull on the top of the grilles while the sides were spotted. The carpet and vinyl have not shown noticeable changes. PRT-85-117 PRT-89-052 1.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT Further to the tests effected in the laboratories of the CRIQ, this technical report is a description of the method used for the testing of the product, the results as a whole and the appropriate conclusions and recommendations. 2.0 AIM OF THE PROJECT The aim of the project was to make the evaluation of 30 foot grilles following six (6) tests so as to supply technical and/or comparative data from one model of grille to the other. 3.0 DESCRIPTION OF THE METHODS AND ANALYSIS OF THE RESULTS The tests have been effectuated on 30 different grilles described in section 3.1 following six (6) tests for which the analysis and results are described in sections 3.2 to 3.7 inclusively. 3.1. FRICTION COEFFICIENT 59 Printing >>> We define the friction coefficient between two (2) surfaces the same way as we define the traction parallel to the surface applying the weight on the top of the grille. Also, we obtain the static friction coefficient when the surfaces are not in motion and the dynamic friction coefficient for surfaces when in motion. The set-up for the testing has been realized with a Rockford Machine Tool model FR 6-06-32-11 at the CRIQ's workshop at Ste-Foy. To five (5) surfaces of the shoes were mounted on the machine tool with a weight of 50 pounds (22,7 kg). The shoe was laid down on the grille, which was fixed to the movable part of the machine tool moving at approximately 3 centimeters per second. The recording of the friction strength was obtained by a load cell connected to a tracing table. The testing periods were for 20 seconds and repeated three times. Tests were performed for the 30 grilles in parallel and perpendicular directions to the bars of the grilles for five (5) different types of surfaces on dry and wet grilles. The letters used in the charts are corresponding to the following shoes: -A: -B: -C: -D: -E: shoe with a checkered sole working boot jogging running shoe ankle boot with a hard rubber sole rubber surface The results of the tests have shown that for the shoes utilized, no coefficient of static friction has been obtained. This is probably due to the fact that the ungluing of the sole occurs progressively and not in a block. Furthermore, it was noted that there was a high variation of the friction, the minimum being from 0,30 and the maximum from 2,1. We have also noted that some factors were influencing this coefficient. First, the type of sole makes the friction coefficient variable. In decreasing order, we find the shoe with a checkered sole (a), rubber surface (e), jogging shoe (c), working boot (b) and the ankle foot (d), when the grilles were dry. When the grilles were wet, the soles (c) and (e) had practically the same values. Secondly, the results have shown that the orientation of the sole on the grille, either perpendicular of parallel to the bars, was sometimes influencing the friction coefficient. In the case of the dry grille with aluminum top, the coefficient is higher when the sole is parallel to the bars. In the other cases, the results have shown that the orientation of the sole on the grille was sometimes influencing one way and sometimes the other way. Thirdly, the type of surface was influencing the friction coefficient. To better discern it, the chart 5 indicates the average friction coefficients for aluminum, vinyl and carpet. We note that for the dry surfaces, the three coefficients are near 1,0, however, when the surfaces are wet all the friction coefficients are reducing but not in the same proportions. In fact, the aluminum surfaces have a weaker friction coefficient, whereas the vinyl remains the highest. 3.2. PERCENTAGE OF OPENING The percentage of opening has been evaluated for each of the 30 grilles from the width of the bars and the spacing. In the case of the BSA-1 grille bearing #2, the percentage of opening includes the spacing between the bars and the grooves made with a saw. In the case of the grilles covered with carpet, we have established that the percentage of opening is the spacing between the bars, serving as holder for the carpet. The percentage of the variable obtained is 9% for the carpet grille #6 and 62% for the grilles #3 and #8, model BA-2. 3.3. CLEANING EFFICIENCY The aim of this test was to compare the cleaning efficiency of the different grilles. Following a research of standards and unable to find one, we have defined our own method. The set-up used is similar to the one used for the friction coefficient. The working boot with a load of 50 pounds is supported by the tool-holder of the filing-vice ROCKFORD MACHINE TOOL model FR 6-06-32-11. The grille is fixed at the movable part of the machine tool. The clean boot was weighed and an even coat of clay of 100 gr. was applied to the sole. More specifically, a preparation of 3190.0 grams of 40 F Siam clay mixed with 500 ml of water. Then the boot was again weighed. After the second weighing, the boot with the load of 50 pounds was set on the grille and pulled on a length of 42,5 cm (the hook holding the boot at 5,0 cm above the grille). Finally, the boot was weighed for the third time, this enabled us to calculate the mass of clay which was removed. The formula used was as follows: % of cleaning = boot after cleaning - clean boot -------------------------------- X 100 boot before cleaning - clean boot This gives us the (%) percentage of clay removed during the cleaning period. The results compiled inside chart #1 of annex A are based on three tests. The pictures #4 to #22 indicate the set-up used and the clay left by the footprints on the grilles. The results obtained during the tests have demonstrated that for the aluminum grilles, the percentage of cleaning was always very close to 50% except for the grille BSA-1, which was 69%. The vinyl surfaces have shown a percentage of cleaning of 47%, a value very close to the aluminum grilles. Finally, the grilles covered with carpet have obtained the highest percentage of cleaning with 76% and 77%. These high values are due to the fact that the fibber of the carpet removed the clay located in the grooves of the sole, which could not be obtained with the other grilles. However, these carpet grilles are not conceived for this kind of use, which reflects a very severe utilization. 3.4 DEFLECTION UNDER LIVE LOAD 60 Printing >>> The aim of this test was to obtain a deflection of 1/180 of the span on the different grilles. The tests have been realized for a span of 24 inches (610 mm) and 32 inches (810 mm). The values obtained for a span of 48 inches (1220 mm) have been extrapolated from the first two. The test has been made with an MTS hydraulic machine. The load has been applied at the center of the span with a 4 inchs square surface. We note that to obtain comparative results, it would be necessary to retake a same square surface of 4 inches on the side. The registration of the load in term of the deflection was made by the MTS machine and is shown at annex C "GRAPHIC RESULTS". We find at the beginning of the curve, an area with a very weak slope. It corresponds to the deflection due to the position of the grille on its supports and if it is the case, it does flatten the carpet. The second portion of the curve is linear and the slope of the curve is stiffer and corresponds to the rigidity of the grille. After obtaining the maximum load, the curve comes down a little to the right of the first curve to come back to its original point. The calculation of the necessary load for a deflection of 1/180 of the span is made from the slopes measured on the curves. We reject then the additional deflections corresponding to the position of the grille and the flatness of the carpet to consider only the deflection of the grille. The method of calculation and the results are found at annex B "Calculation of Deflections under live load". 3.5 DISTORTION UNDER LATERAL LOAD The application of a load or of a great impact on the surface of a grille entails undesirable permanent distortion. The aim of this test is to compare the different models of the grilles submitted to a heavy lateral load. To carry out the tests, the following method was used: -The grille was leaning on its two side supports. -A maximum load of 6130 Newton (1380 pounds) was then applied at 45 degrees with respect to the surface of the grille, at the center of two rods. -The load was applied by means of one (1) inch square steel bar of high tensile strength. -The load was applied slowly and a load curve, corresponding to the distortion, has been obtained for each grille. The results obtained from the graphics and from a subjective evaluation of four (4) people are found at chart 7 "Distortion under lateral charge". We find the residual plastic energetic distortion of the grille as well as the subjective results of evaluation. At the time of the objective evaluation, grilles number 2, 6, 7, 10, 12 & 13 have been considered as being more damaged, while grille #3 has been considered as being the one with less damages. 3.6 SALT FOG The Salt Fog test has been realized on six samples of grilles supplied by the customer, as per standard ASTM B117 for a period of 1000 hours. Following the period of 1000 hours, the main observations are as follows: -For the aluminum, the top of the grilles became dull, while the sides and the underneath were spotted. -For the carpet, the salt fog had no noticeable effect. The rivets, used to hold the carpet in the aluminum grooves, have not undergone any noticeable changes. -For the vinyl, the salt fog had no noticeable effect. However, the screws that were holding it have rusted. The photographs of the samples taken before and after the test of the salt fog will be found at annex E, under 33 to 44. 4.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS Following the six (6) tests realized on the 30 different models of grilles, we have reached the following conclusions: From the six tests, one is unable to say that one model of grille is better than the other. One must consider each test and take into consideration the importance that it represents for the user, thus for industrial use, one will have advantage to use a grille resisting to lateral charges with a high live load, whereas for commercial use, one will have advantage to consider the cleaning efficiency.
