They are also an indicator of the important characteristics shared by many of our businesses which have enabled them to achieve earnings growth in spite of the continuing uncertain economic environment. Included in these characteristics is a common aspiration to be the ‘Best in Class’ in their sector. It is this powerful determination to succeed that helps our businesses to overcome adversity and seize opportunities for growth. A fine example of determination is Zung Fu (China), the subject of our feature on pages 14-19, which persevered over many years to build a business in Southern China that today is a market leader with a great brand and excellent potential for further growth. Our 2010 Pride in Performance Award winners also display strong evidence of that same determination whether it be in business outperformance, a new marketing campaign, an innovative and creative solution to a challenging problem or in providing best customer service. The combination of this shared determination with our ideal location in East Asia and our financial strength is fundamental to our continued success. As conditions eased in Asia, the second half marked an improvement over both the first half and the comparable period of 2008, which had coincided with the worst of the global economic crisis. Hongkong Land completed several large projects during the year, helping the company to double its profits, and both Astra and Dairy Farm also had record years. These successes more than made up for weaker results in hotels and some other businesses, which were more affected by the recession. Jardine Cycle & Carriage’s earnings benefited from Astra’s record result and an improved contribution from its other motor interests. In response to difficult trading conditions in the hotel sector, Mandarin Oriental maintained profitability by focusing on its competitive position and reducing costs. Jardine Pacific’s businesses were affected in various ways by the downturn. Both Jardine Motors and Jardine Lloyd Thompson benefited in 2009 from the expansion of their areas of activity through organic growth or acquisition, while at the same time streamlining to improve profitability. The Group achieved a record underlying profit in 2009 of US$1,010 million, an increase of 23%. Underlying earnings per share were 22% higher at US$2.84 and turnover, including 100% of associates, was US$36.0 billion, compared with US$36.2 billion in 2008. Seizing Opportunities for Growth The Jardine Matheson Group remains well placed to seize opportunities for growth, Managing Director Anthony Nightingale told senior executives in his annual address. the financial strength and expertise within each of our operations to pursue development opportunities; and third, our businesses are, or aspire to be, industry leaders; the ‘Best in Class’ in their sector.” Mr Nightingale did, however, remind his audience that while conditions in the Group’s heartland of East Asia are now reasonable for most of its businesses, much of the developed world remains in trouble. “This means we must remain nimble, ready certainly to exploit any chance to increase sales, but also ready to adapt if conditions turn more difficult again.” Speaking against the backdrop of the Group’s record results for 2009, Mr Nightingale said that there were three important characteristics, which gave him confidence: Mr Nightingale said that the Group’s businesses shared many attributes which were fundamental to its culture and critical to its performance, most importantly, a powerful determination to succeed. “First, we are fortunate to be positioned primarily in East Asia, where unlike some parts of the developed world, economic growth is expected to remain reasonable; second, we have “On this foundation, I am confident that we can, and that we will, seize opportunities and prosper,” he concluded. Forging Closer Ties with Central People’s Government The Jardine Matheson Group has hosted a dinner for the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The recently appointed Director of the Liaison Office, Peng Qinghua, and his senior team joined Jardine Matheson Directors in the Penthouse of Jardine House to discuss matters relating to both China and Hong Kong. The two parties exchanged views on various topics including the economy and the stability and prosperity of the business environment in Hong Kong. By taking a creative and visionary approach, the Pama team has transformed its business over the last 16 years from a heavy equipment rental operation into Indonesia’s largest coal mining contractor. In the three-year period from 2006 to 2009, Pama doubled its revenue to US$1.8 billion and increased its profit more than fivefold to US$250 million. This performance represents growth over its 1993 revenue and profit of 223 and 355 times, respectively. The judges of the PIP Awards singled out Pama’s ‘strong and structured systems for recognizing and developing competence to support the evolving organization.’ effective way to beat the global economic crisis. Zung Fu attributes its remarkable 2009 achievement of US$42 million sales revenue and US$2 million pre-tax profit to the CVD team going beyond the call of duty to fulfill – and exceed – its customers’ needs. In many instances this ‘can do’ attitude has resulted in the team winning new business. Wellcome Campaign Takes Hong Kong by Storm Wellcome Hong Kong’s marketing campaign, ‘One Dollar Does Matter’, took Hong Kong and the advertising world by storm and won over 20 local and international creative and marketing awards. The successful objective of the campaign was to position the supermarket chain as a champion of family values while reinforcing its low price leadership. Over 90% of the 796 units at the luxury apartmentcum-retail complex were sold at record prices. The PIP Awards judges described the small Hongkong Land team as ‘an excellent risk taker.’ Innovative Solution Wins Business for Gammon When approached by the University of Hong Kong to design a campus extension on a cramped site used by the Water Services Department to store fresh and saltwater supplies, Gammon Construction came up with an out-of-the-box solution that was sustainable and environmentally friendly. Gammon relocated the water storage facilities to a purpose-built underground saltwater cavern at the adjacent Lung Fu Shan country park. The creation of the cavern as a storage facility was an engineering first for Hong Kong. ‘For Gammon, nothing is impossible,’ stated the PIP Awards judges. Further information on the PIP Awards is available at http://www.jardines.com/ profile/perform.html Pamapersada Nusantara – Grand Prize Winner and Business Outperformance Zung Fu – Customer Focus Wellcome – Marketing Excellence Gammon Construction and Maxim’s Group are both playing significant roles at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, which opened in May and continues until the end of October. The Expo is expected to draw tens of millions of visitors from within Mainland and around the world. Gammon was awarded the ‘design and build’ contract for the Hong Kong Pavilion, which is the showcase of Hong Kong’s presence at World Expo. The three-storey pavilion, with the theme ‘Hong Kong – Potential Unlimited’, is located within the China Pavilion area in Pudong. It features an external aluminium and glass façade with three-dimensional characteristics to highlight the dynamic nature of Hong Kong. The middle level of the pavilion is mostly transparent to symbolize the infinite imagination and creativity of Hong Kong and its people. Another feature is its ‘green’ rooftop, which highlights the fact that country parks and green belt areas make up some 70% of Hong Kong’s total land mass. In addition to heatabsorbing vegetation, other ‘green’ elements include solar panels, water cascades, heat-reflecting glass, Specially trained Maxim’s Group staff are promoting Hong Kong’s unique culinary culture at World Expo 2010. energy-efficient air-conditioning and recyclable building materials. Meanwhile Maxim’s is the only representative from Hong Kong to partake in the ‘Chinese Culinary Zone’, which is showcasing Asian food to World Expo visitors. Maxim’s has also created a massive food hall of nearly 20,000 sq. ft to spotlight Hong Kong’s unique culinary culture on the world stage. In preparation for the event, Maxim’s recruited 270 people, most of them hospitality and catering students from China, and put them through a rigorous training programme. At the Centre Gammon and Maxim’s on Show at World Expo 2010 Shanghai Group Chairman Visits Southeast Asia and China Jardine Matheson Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick visited six countries in Southeast Asia and five cities in China during a regular trip to the region. During his one-month visit, Sir Henry visited Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, and in China, the cities of Shenyang, Beijing, Chongqing, Kunming and Chengdu. In each place Sir Henry was received by senior government officials and prominent local businessmen. Meetings focused on fostering relationships and further strengthening the Group’s presence and business development in the region. In China, Sir Henry also toured various Group interests including sites being developed by a Hongkong Land joint venture in Shenyang, Jardine Airport Services’ new ground handling business at Yunnan Airport and, in Chengdu, Zung Fu (China)’s MercedesBenz dealership, as well as Maxim’s Group’s Starbucks outlets in the city. In Vietnam, Sir Henry, his wife Lady Tessa and Jardine Matheson Director Simon Keswick visited Jardine Cycle & Carriage’s (JC&C) 29%-held associate Truong Hai Automotive (THACO), which is the second largest automotive company in the country. The delegation was welcomed by THACO Chairman and majority owner Tran Ba Duong and then toured the group’s major production facilities in Chu Lai, Central Vietnam. Mr Duong expressed his gratitude to Sir Henry for the many areas of support that Jardines has provided since JC&C’s initial investment in June 2008. New UK Prime Minister Recalls His First Job at Jardines Britain’s new Prime Minister David Cameron has recalled his first job at Jardines when he was employed by the Group for three months during his gap year in 1985 before going up to Oxford. Responding to a congratulatory message from Jardine Matheson Group Chairman Sir Henry Keswick on his appointment as Prime Minister, Mr Cameron asks “am I the first to go from Jardine Shipping Agency to PM…” and sends his regards to Patrick Ng, General Manager of Jardine Port Agency whom he describes as ‘my first boss…’ Patrick Ng Mr Ng said he was delighted that Mr Cameron’s initial experience of the world of business when he worked as a ‘ship jumper’, also known as an ‘Operations Representative’, for Jardine Shipping Agencies (HK) had laid the foundations for such an illustrious career. David Cameron “I wish him every success in his new, rather larger role,” said Mr Ng. Jardine Shipping Services Expands Presence in China’s Ports A decade after China opened up its shipping agency business to foreign participation, Jardine Shipping Services (JSS) has grown to become one of the most active agencies in the country. With 11 strategically located offices in eight port cities and excellent relationships within the Chinese shipping community, JSS represents the interests of major liner companies and provides convenient and efficient one-stop access to the China marketplace. “We are the only agency in China providing comprehensive liner agency services under one brand throughout the country,” explained JSS Chief Executive Terence Sit. JSS first established a representative office in China in 1990, but it was not until the lifting of restrictions in 2000 that growth really took off. Historically, the deep sea port of Hong Kong had been the gateway for China, acting as a transshipment point for Chinese imports and exports but as the country opened up to foreign interests, more shipping services began to make direct calls into China. “This created the need for agencies such as JSS to have a stronger presence in China,” said Mr Sit. JSS’s strategy was to establish that presence in major Chinese ports through joint ventures with its existing local agents. In 2006, JSS established its first joint venture shipping agency in Shanghai followed a year later by another in Shenzhen. At the Centre “This was a major breakthrough,” said Mr Sit. “Through these two joint ventures, we are able to directly participate in the agency operation instead of working through a local sub-agent and can also interface with local authorities and customers.” With the current JSS network now covering most of the main ports, the next challenge is to expand into some of the so-called secondary ports, which have high growth potential. This year JSS will handle a direct container service between the US west coast and Taicang in Jiangsu province, a next-door neighbour to Shanghai and adjacent to one of the most prosperous industrial centres within the Yangtze River Delta. “We are also looking closely at ports beyond the Pearl River Delta in Southern China,” added Mr Sit. In addition to its direct presence in China’s ports, JSS acts as a hub on behalf of shipowners and operators who move high volume of imports and exports in China by providing operations support through its Hong Kong office. This includes managing ship movements, agency appointments and fund transfers. “On average, this service handles over 100 ships a month, providing a onestop ‘shop’ to meet all our customers’ A container ship under the care of Jardine Shipping Services loads up at the busy port of Yantian in Shenzhen. needs and effectively reducing the time and cost of their doing business in China,” said Mr Sit. In the long-term, JSS hopes to participate directly in the local operations of as many of China’s ports as possible. That will entail providing levels of service which exceed those of the increasingly competitive local agents and other existing international agency groups. “The main advantages which JSS offers are its good relationships with both principals and local partners, and being able to centralize all funding and operations through a single hub, thus providing instant information and support,” said Mr Sit. Jardine Shipping Services is expanding its services into so-called secondary ports and this year will handle a direct container service between the US west coast and Taicang in Jiangsu province. Billion-Dollar Contract Wins for Gammon LEADERSHIP Leadership Billion-Dollar Contract Wins for Gammon Gammon has recently won several billion-dollar contracts for rail, airport and road projects in Hong Kong. The first contract, valued at HK$1.34 billion (US$172 million), requires Gammon to construct a cutand-cover station in Kennedy Town and an overrun tunnel with a total length of 650 metres. The second contract, valued at HK$4.75 billion (US$609 million), requires the Gammon-Nishimatsu WIL Joint Venture to construct two intermediate stations in Sai Ying Pun and the University of Hong Kong and a running tunnel with a total length of 2.2 kilometres. In another joint venture, Gammon and Hip Hing Construction Co Ltd have been awarded a HK$4.2 billion (US$538 million) contract by Cathay Pacific Services Ltd to build its new air cargo terminal at Hong Kong International Airport. The contract comprises the construction of an eight-storey warehouse in precast/insitu concrete; ramps to the warehouse and an office building. It also includes co-ordination of the Material Handling System, building services and finishing. Meanwhile, Gammon’s expertise in major road works is reflected in the group winning a HK$2.38 billion (US$305 million) contract to help alleviate traffic congestion problems and meet future traffic demand on two key highways in the North-east New Territories of Hong Kong. The 40-month contract from the HKSAR Highways Department requires widening the existing dual three-lane carriageways to four lanes along a 3.5 kilometre section of the Tolo and Fanling highways. The project scope includes modification and demolition of five existing bridges and the construction of eight vehicular bridges including all associated interchanges and utilities. Hongkong Land Showcases Work of Renowned Sculptor Hongkong Land has showcased the work of world-renowned sculptor Ju Ming at various locations in Central. Works from Mr Ju’s most celebrated endeavour, the Taichi Series of bronze sculptures, was on show at the Open Plaza in Exchange Square, while his Living World Series of painted wood and stone sculptures could be seen at The Rotunda, Exchange Square and Jardine House. The inaugural launch of his latest work featuring sculptures cast in stainless steel under the banner ‘Swimming in Hong Kong’ took place at The Landmark. Over the course of serving close to 400 cups of milk tea, Mr Chalk saw firsthand how 7-Eleven’s newly developed hot food and drink products have been incorporated into the daily routine of many Hong Kong people. The Hot Shot counter introduced freshly prepared hot food into 7-Eleven stores in 2008 and last year expanded by 25% to over 350 store locations. “We strive to make available to customers their favourite foods in the most convenient manner with a consistently great taste,” said Mr Chalk, who was joined by seven fellow executives serving customers in other stores that morning. Guardian Malaysia Champions Customer Care Guardian in Malaysia has organized a nationwide Customer Care campaign to identify and acknowledge employees who have portrayed exceptional customer service. The campaign, which began early this year, culminated in a national competition held at Guardian Suria Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). This involved two ‘on-the-job’ rounds; one being the cashiering and, the second, evaluation of the candidates on the shop floor. Judging was based on the best customer service attributes including greetings, decorum, offering further assistance and ‘going the extra mile’. “Our customer care campaign is an extension of our passion for customer service excellence,” said Guardian Chief Operating Officer Loi Liang Tok. “This is crucial in any business as it delivers a great shopping experience that differentiates us from others.” At the end of the competition, the customer care champions walked away with a cash prize of RM1,000 each with first runners up taking home RM700 each and second runners up, RM500. All the finalists received RM100 cash and a certificate of appreciation. “The competition winners will become Guardian’s customer care ambassadors and the catalyst for instilling a service-oriented culture to ensure that Guardian continues in its leadership position by always exceeding customer expectations,” added Ms Loi. Leadership 13 Major Projects for JEC in Singapore and Thailand Zung Fu (China) – Driving Forward Feature Feature 15 Zung Fu (China) – Driving Forward Almost a quarter of a century after Jardine Motors subsidiary Zung Fu first established a presence in China, the company is driving forward its ambitious plan to be the number one MercedesBenz dealer in Guangdong Province while also expanding into seven other provinces in Southern China. in Hong Kong is one of the highest for Mercedes-Benz worldwide. Long before mainland China became a market for luxury cars, Zung Fu set up the first of a series of repair workshops in 1986. In 1993, Shenzhen Zung Fu was opened as the first Mercedes-Benz authorized service centre in Southern China. From these initial strategic moves, Zung Fu (China) has built up a network of 16 Mercedes-Benz outlets and two ‘Smart’ showrooms. While this is already the largest Mercedes-Benz network in Southern China, the group intends to extend its reach even further during the next three years. Zung Fu’s development in China, which has mirrored the economic progress of the Southern region, in particular the province of Guangdong, has been based on extending this successful 55 year-long partnership with Mercedes-Benz. With the advantages of its reputation in Hong Kong and support from loyal customers, many of whom also set up businesses across the border, Zung Fu (China)’s early operations soon expanded from Shenzhen into cities like Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Jiangmen. Since 1954, when Zung Fu brought the first Mercedes-Benz vehicle to Hong Kong, the two companies have enjoyed a unique relationship. Zung Fu is the exclusive retailer of Mercedes-Benz automobiles in Hong Kong and Macau and its share of the automotive market “It is an alliance of equally formidable reputations; a partnership based on brand, product and people, and quality of products and services,” said Zung Fu Chief Executive Michael Lee. “It was a hard battle,” said Mr Lee, “as Chinese Government policy restricted foreign companies like Zung Fu. For many years, we could only operate a service centre business with the vision that one day they would become full dealership operations.” Zung Fu’s belief and perseverance paid off in 2001 when China was admitted to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and liberalized its motor retail industry. “With years of preparation to identify suitable sites, develop a well-trained sales organization and establish a service reputation, Zung Fu was poised to become a network of full service dealerships. Indeed we commemorated the breakthrough with the opening of our first pure sales showroom in Guangzhou that year,” said Mr Lee. Since then the enormous economic growth of the region and subsequent consumer demand for high-end vehicles, have created a period of impressive growth. “The market still has excellent potential and with a great brand like Mercedes-Benz, we feel we can continue to expand our network and grow Zung Fu’s share of the luxury sector,” said Mr Lee. $IFOHEV;VOH'V )VOBO;VOH'V (VBOHEPOH;VOH'V:JCBOH (VBOH[IPV4UBS %POHHVBO;VOH'V:JIVB %POHHVBO;VOH'V)VBYJOH )VJ[IPV;VOH'V (VBOH[IPV;VOH'V 'PTIBO;VOH'V +JBOHNFO;VOH'V ;IPOHTIBO;VOH'V 4IFO[IFO;VOH'V 4IFO[IFO;VOH'V4IPXSPPN 4IFO[IFO4UBS 4IFO[IFO4UBS4IPXSPPN ;IVIBJ;VOH'V Zung Fu (China) has an extensive network of Mercedes-Benz dealerships in China. Zung Fu Network Geared Up to Meet Consumer Demand From its earliest days in Southern China, Zung Fu’s strategy has been to predict the economic development potential of evolving cities and preempt competitors by being the first Mercedes-Benz dealer to establish a presence in their key areas. “Each new location is carefully chosen for its potential growth,” said Mr Lee. For example, Zung Fu was among the first luxury car dealers to recognize the potential of Chengdu when, in 2000, the Chinese Government announced its plan to encourage investment in the vast underdeveloped Western region. Subsequently Chengdu Zung Fu opened as the first Mercedes-Benz dealer in Sichuan province in 2001. “We predicted that the Chengdu area would ultimately boom as the hub of Mid-Western China because of its rich resources,” said Mr Lee. “Fortunately, we have been proved right and Chengdu Zung Fu now claims 70% of market share there. As the leading Hunan Zung Fu is the largest car dealer in the region. dealer in the West, it even attracts customers from as far away as Tibet.” Similarly in 2004, Zung Fu (China) made a move into Changsha, the provincial capital of Hunan and now a key city in the Mid-South. In 2008, Hunan Zung Fu was relocated and upgraded to become the largest car dealer in the region. Zung Fu (China) established its initial reputation in Southern China on the quality of its service centres. In Guangdong province too, Zung Fu (China)’s pre-emptive strategy continues to produce results. In the early 2000s, Zung Fu predicted that economic development and consumer purchasing power would spread from Guangzhou and Shenzhen into Foshan, then regarded as a suburb of the province’s capital. Foshan has since grown into a city and the Foshan Zung Fu dealership, which opened in 2007, has been well placed to meet the predicted consumer demand for luxury cars. As the city continues to expand, Zung Fu has recently identified the district of Shunde as also being able to support a Mercedes-Benz dealership. Shunde Zung Fu will open in the third quarter of 2010 to serve an area which boasts one of the highest levels of GDP per capita in China and is a centre for some of the world’s biggest electrical appliances producers. “Zung Fu’s predictive, pre-emptive network strategy has paid off as Southern China has developed,” said Mr Lee. “Our well-placed outlets enable us to retain existing customers and generate new business from customers who are attracted by the preferential support our wide network offers, our unrivalled reputation for service and our top of the range brand,” said Mr Lee. Feature 17 Zung Fu Stays Ahead Determined to deflect the impact of the global economic downturn on its core business in Southern China during the increasingly difficult market environment of 2008/2009, Zung Fu took bold steps to grow sales without sacrificing profitability. “We promoted exclusive offers to customers who purchased at Zung Fu dealers and emphasized the benefits to our customers of Zung Fu’s unique service network, uncompromising service quality and technical skills,” said Mr Lee. Fourteen out of Zung Fu (China)’s 16 Mercedes-Benz dealerships are located in Guangdong province and owners of enterprises directly affected by the economic downturn, such as manufacturing and trading, make up more than 40% of its clientele in Southern China. What was already a challenging situation was made worse by fierce intra-brand competition. During 2009, Zung Fu (China) introduced customer-oriented events which included the Southern China motor industry’s first ever golf tournament at dealer level and the Zung Fu track experience held at the Zhuhai International Circuit. Each event attracted some 1,000 participants and served to promote the importance of Zung Fu as a major dealer group for Mercedes-Benz. “As the downturn started to bite, automobile demand fell. As stock started to build, many independent car dealers and competitors cut their prices to offload stocks, adding to the already harsh market dynamics,” explained Michael Lee. Zung Fu’s pro-active response was to bolster its marketing strategy targeting the strong customer base it had built up over 15 years. Another valuable tool was ‘Renfuhui’, a quality, quarterly lifestyle magazine, which was also launched last year. With a readership of 30,000 and placement in high-end locations such as lounges, restaurants and the VIP rooms of banks, the magazine spreads ‘word-of-mouth’ marketing and helps to influence prospective customers who have never stepped into a Zung Fu showroom. Quarterly lifestyle magazine ‘Renfuhui’ helps Zung Fu (China) to influence prospective customers. Nearly 1,000 Zung Fu (China) customers took part in its first ever golf tournament organized at dealer level, with matches held in the company’s cities of operation in Southern China. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is regarded as the style icon of the luxury brand and a key element of the portfolio of Mercedes-Benz vehicles which Zung Fu (China) offers through its expanding network of dealerships. In a further assertion of its market leadership, Zung Fu (China) chose 2009 to open its two biggest 4S (Sales, after-sales Services, Spare parts, Survey) dealerships in Southern China. Guangzhou Zung Fu and Dongguan Zung Fu Huaxin, which boasts 25 service bays and a designed annual throughput of 10,000 jobs, attracted wide media coverage and much public attention. its margins. Indeed its decisive action actually generated new sales momentum. As a result of all these initiatives, Zung Fu (China) has remained one of the few car dealers in the region to withstand the market difficulties of 2008/2009 without jeopardizing Overcoming the challenges of the last few years in such a positive manner while continuing to put its customers first has also taken Zung Fu (China)’s relationships with its customers “Against all the odds, Zung Fu’s new car deliveries in Southern China increased by 72% to over 9,200 units in 2009 and the group is confident of achieving 15,000-unit sales in 2010, yet another astonishing leap,” said Mr Lee. to a new high. This is borne out by an improved Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) and, in particular, by its Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI), which jumped significantly from 2007 to 2009. “Our diversified strategy has produced significant results and enhanced our market leadership,” said Mr Lee. “Many of our initiatives have stimulated phone enquiries and showroom traffic. Satisfied customers are more likely to repurchase and friends of satisfied customers and guests who have attended our events often become new customers.” In the Lead with StarElite The introduction by Zung Fu (China) in 2008 of StarElite, a brand for preowned cars under Mercedes-Benz, has created another avenue of business, which is expected to grow as the country’s car market matures. “Until we pioneered StarElite at Shenzhen Zung Fu, there had been no trustworthy platform on which pre-owned Mercedes Benz cars could be traded in or bought,” said Mr Lee. Zung Fu (China) now operates three StarElite centres in Shenzhen, Dongguan and Guangdong, the largest StarElite network in Southern China. “StarElite has helped speed up the sales of new cars and facilitated additional after-sales business as well,” said Mr Lee. “The used car business in China will become a major part of any car dealership in two to three years time and we aim to take the lead.” Feature 19 Maintaining Momentum China’s automotive market is expected to continue its rapid momentum for some years to come. The ongoing development of its economy, the upgrading and expansion of the country’s road system, the relatively small number of existing car owners and the increasing number of consumers who aspire to own a car are all factors which point towards further positive growth. Currently one million new cars are sold in China every month, but only 4% of these are in the luxury segment. “While the market maintains its current rate of growth, we feel that it should be possible to increase the share of the luxury segment to 7-8% in the medium term,” said Mr Lee. Competition will become even keener as all the leading international manufacturers jostle for a slice of the market. In keeping with MercedesBenz’ master plan to double its network of outlets from the current 140 to 280 by 2013, Zung Fu (China) aims to capture at least 50% of the outlets in Southern China and achieve over 50% of all Mercedes-Benz car sales in this region. In the next two years, Zung Fu (China) will open new dealerships in Sichuan, Hunan, Chongqing, Hubei and Yunnan, many of them in places which have never seen luxury car dealers. “Everything is possible in China, but nothing comes easy,” said Mr Lee. Zung Fu (China) prides itself on its customer service and seeks “Rules, regulations, legal to make buying and owning a Mercedes-Benz as enjoyable an processes, business experience as driving one. licenses, permits, tax, information – all have to be dealt with. Customers too behave With this aim, Zung Fu (China) differently depending on whether they established its own training centre live in a city or the provinces.” in Dongguan last year, the first in the industry in China. A key factor of Zung Fu (China)’s future success is recruiting and retaining “Our ultimate goal is for all levels of the right people and developing staff to have PHDs – Passion, Heart and nurturing both their skills and and Determination,” said Mr Lee. corporate mindset. “With that and the foundation we have already built, Zung Fu (China) is ideally “This is a business about people, not placed to make the most of what just vehicles,” said Mr Lee. “We need is a huge market with further great capable people to run and grow our potential.” business. Investing in our people is as important as expanding our network.” Zung Fu (China) has pioneered StarElite, a brand for pre-owned cars under Mercedes-Benz, and now has three centres in Southern China including this one in Dongguan. Together with his younger brother and a friend, Mr Soeryadjaya established PT Astra International Inc in 1957. The early 1990s were a difficult time for Mr Soeryadjaya when he had to sell his stake in Astra in order to save depositors of Bank Summa, which was facing financial problems. Astra also faced several crises with problems generated by the financial downturn of 1998. That it survived and prospered is attributed in some part to the values of ‘Catur Dharma’, as the Astra philosophy embodying customer service, teamwork and excellence, which was developed by Mr Soeryadjaya and left behind as a legacy, is known. Eric van der Hoeven ENTERPRISE AT WORK ... Jardine Schindler Group “Our own proven skilled labour from Hong Kong helped to train up the skill levels of sub-contractors,” said Macau Field Operations Director Daniel Chan. “This relieved the pressure of progress slippage and labour shortage on the one hand, and improved work quality and customer confidence on the other.” The management team and staff of Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau). A dedicated team determined to beat all the odds was the difference between success and failure when the Jardine Schindler Group (JSG) entered the elevator and escalator market in Macau. By the time global recession put an end to the boom in 2008, Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau) had won orders for 397 lifts and 221 escalators: a total of 618 units, or over 66% of all those generated by the casino construction boom. Not only had the company achieved profitability in its fourth year of operations, but it had exceeded all expectations and targets. The opening up of the Macau casino market on a competitive basis in December 2002 triggered an unprecedented building boom. For JSG, it represented a huge opportunity for expansion, but one which brought challenges and risks. The casino developments were huge in scope and highly complex technically. To win business, JSG would have to perform at a level far exceeding that of a start-up company. David Chen who is now Managing Director of Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau) attributes much of its success to the people involved at every level. Having the right people from the beginning was essential. “We needed good managers, skilled specialists and fast-learning frontline people,” said David Chen who led the team. Indeed the level of teamwork involved was reflected in a Schindler Group’s worldwide Employee Motivation Survey, where Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau) outscored benchmarks in every category, often by a substantial margin. A local office was set up and after much hard work, JSG secured its first major contract in June 2005 with The Venetian. Others soon followed. JSG’s new operating company, Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau) was established in 2005, and in 2006 JSG acquired a small company to provide a platform for growth. During 2010 Jardine Schindler Lifts (Macau) will see its maintenance portfolio rise to 700 units in the highest-value segment of the elevator and lifts business. The company is also poised to capitalize on new growth opportunities as the casino resort developers move back in and the Macau Government proceeds with its plans for further land reclamation. As projects progressed to site, JSG seconded skilled personnel to Macau, primarily from Hong Kong. This proved invaluable when existing labour shortages were exacerbated by delays with work permits. “The teamwork and competence levels throughout JSG were about as good as you can get,” he said. “Not only were our senior managers brilliant, but the people directly below them and then the frontline staff were also outstanding.” “The company is profitable, sustainable and debt-free with a highly motivated workforce,” said Mr Chen. “Against all the odds, we are winners in Macau.” Please address your comments or suggestions regarding Thistle to the Thistle Editor, c/0 Group Corporate Affairs, Jardine Matheson Limited, 48/F Jardine House, Central, Hong Kong [email protected] Thistle is published by Jardine Matheson Limited on behalf of the Jardine Matheson Group. www.jardines.com
