Cares
Franklin shines during every season: the leaves
and cider mill in the fall, the sledding hill and
decorations in the winter, the spring blossoms and
busy baseball fields in the spring, but personally I
think Franklin is at its brightest during the summer
when the FCA is in full swing. Join us Wednesday
evenings in July and August for the Music on the
Green Concerts that we support, as well as the
Movies on the Green we sponsor. Starting on May
19, Sundays are special as well. The Franklin fresh
farmer’s market, Market on the Green, returns to
Franklin. Produce, flowers, breads, cakes, candies,
art, music and more on the Village Green Sundays
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Special Community Gathering
for Franklin Seniors
Please plan on joining us at our Taste of Spring
Wine and Dine on June 1. Strolling dinner, wine
tasting, valet, and a beautiful home – come with
your friends for a wonderful evening. Our thanks
and appreciation to our generous hosts Lori and
Van Conway. All villagers are invited.
Please rsvp to Jane Polan
248.626.2231.
Enjoy a chance to meet and
greet new and old Franklin
Villagers, as well as get an
opportunity to share and
receive information about
vital everyday issues.
Franklin: All About Community
The Village is aware that there may be some older residents
who need extra help to remain living in their homes. If you
know residents or neighbors that could use occasional
assistance, can you spare some time and help them? Think
of offering to help with simple chores like taking out the
garbage, changing a ceiling light bulb and other minor
home maintenance. If you are a senior who could use a bit
of help, or a volunteer willing to help, please let us know.
On Labor Day, September 2 we celebrate our
69th Round Up family fair and summer’s end
celebration.
AND, if you haven’t already done so, please
support the FCA with your membership dues.
We are always open to new ideas – many have
been included in this newsletter. Please share your
thoughts about how to make Franklin even better.
Just email me at [email protected].

Memorial Day Service at the Franklin Cemetery
Civil War Cemetery Tour
The Franklin Cemetery Association invites you and your family and
friends to join them in this annual salute to veterans on Monday,
May 27 at 11 a.m. Special tribute will be paid to World War II
veterans in an old-fashioned, patriotic service filled with music and
inspiration for young and old.
After the war, a soldier could apply for a disability
pension. He had to show support that his disability
occurred during the service. Fellow comrades,
physicians, neighbors and friends would testify
on his behalf.
Over 250 veterans of wars dating back to the War of 1812 are laid
to rest and honored in our beautiful, historic cemetery. Franklin Boy
Scout Troop #1699, the Franklin Memorial Day Band, and other
volunteers join to make this a special service. Bring a lawn chair or
a blanket and your best singing voice!
On Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m.,
you can hear their stories.
We’ll meet at the
gate on Scenic
Drive. The
cost is $10.
If you have a loved one currently serving in the military you would
like to have remembered during the ceremony, please e-mail their
name and service information to Cemetery Director Judy Meade,
[email protected].

Village Crosswalks
Franklin Mobile Watch Report
Many Franklin residents and visitors have
noticed the new signs in our three downtown
crosswalks which instruct motorists to stop
for pedestrians in the crosswalk. With
regard to crosswalks, here’s some general
information you may find useful:
According to the Michigan State Police,
when a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle,
more than 80 percent of the time the
pedestrian is killed or seriously injured.
In Michigan, more than 100 pedestrians
die each year. Most of these deaths occur
between 6 p.m. and midnight, with many
fatalities occurring when pedestrians cross
the roadway somewhere other than at an
intersection. That’s why it’s important to wear
reflective clothing and carry a flashlight when
walking at night or in the early morning.
• A
resident received a call from someone claiming to be her
son. Said he was arrested for drunk driving in another state
and his attorney would call for bail money to be sent via
moneygram. Someone did call claiming to be his attorney and
requested $2,700 for bail and $2,500 to repair a telephone
pole damaged. None of this was true.
The Michigan Motor Vehicle Code Section
(MMVC) 257.612 (ii) states: ...Vehicular
traffic shall yield the right of way to
pedestrians lawfully within an adjacent
crosswalk and to other traffic lawfully
using the intersection. Additionally, bicyclists
have the same rights and rules as motorists
and must also yield to pedestrians lawfully in
the roadway. Pedestrians have the right-ofway when actively crossing in an un-signalized
crosswalk (like the three in Franklin).
There is no requirement that vehicle traffic
must stop for a crosswalk, unless there are
pedestrians in the crosswalk. Because
motorists may not always see pedestrians
entering crosswalks, it is strongly
recommended that if using the crosswalk,
eye contact with the drivers be made before
crossing in front of them. As a pedestrian,
you should never assume that the vehicle
driver can see you. Finally, if you are
walking along the roadway, it is best to
walk facing traffic so as to be able to see
oncoming traffic clearly.
Thank you!
— Chief Dan Roberts

SPRING
As always, please be on the lookout for any types of scams!
• A
n owner arrived home at 6:00 pm, found the front door
kicked in. The master bedroom ransacked, jewelry and cash
missing. The scene was processed – no witnesses.
• A
n engagement ring said to be worth a significant sum was to
be returned to the groom-to-be. It was reportedly placed in a
box under a rock on the porch. When retrieved, the box was
not found.
• A
home invasion of an unoccupied house occurred. A back
basement window broken – alarm went off, electronics, TV,
etc. taken. The Police believe suspects knocked on doors of
surrounding homes to determine easy target. A vehicle with 2
occupants was seen in the area. The suspect was reported to
be well-dressed man – wearing a suit-coat, tie and a sweater vest.
Though burglary numbers are down this year compared to last
year, Franklin Police Chief, Dan Roberts, encourages all to pay
particular attention to vacant homes or homes for sale in our
neighborhoods.
Lastly, it’s that time of year again when spring clean-ups occur.
Although we trust those reputable companies that provide
these services for us all, there are unfortunately a few, probably
not actually providing service to homes in our village, who try
to take advantage of wooded lots, open lots and even vacant
properties for sale and illegally dump yard waste. Should you
see anything of this nature, call the Franklin Police and they
will check it out. Trust me… your neighbor’s lawn service isn’t
dumping the yard waste back onto their property! They are
dumping. Call the Police.
Make a Difference... Join the Mobile Watch
A vigilant and vibrant Mobile Watch can make a difference. You
should consider joining your neighbors on the Franklin Village
Mobile Watch. Contact Membership Chair, Madeline Haddad at
248.855.3390 or the Franklin Police at 248.626.9672 for more
information on how to join. Alternatively, come to our next meeting.
Last Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the Village Office.
