Annual Report 2011 - United Neighborhood Centers
Opportunity
through
Innovation
Annual Report 2011
UNITED NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS OF NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA
Building strong communities- one neighbor at a time.
LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT OF
THE BOARD OF
DIRECTORS
“
This has been a challenging, exciting and fruitful
year for United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania. As the title of this annual report,
“Opportunity through Innovation”, suggests, UNC and
all those affiliated with this agency are most proud
of its ability to continue to expand its services to fit
the current needs of the community. UNC strives to
provide relevant, important and innovative programs
such as a new youth advocacy council supporting
anti-bullying and LGBTQ outreach, as well as a theater group that has expanded to almost 40 children
and hosted two performances in under a year.
In April of this year, UNC merged with another
non-profit, SCOLA Volunteers for Literacy. This move
incorporated them as a fifth service department
within the agency-- adding to our Youth, Childcare,
Community Services and Older Adult programs. We
are excited to add this adult literacy and English as a
Second Language component to our list of services
and have already been hard at work to institute new
programs within the department. UNC was awarded
the only new family literacy grant in the state,
providing us with yet another way to assist families
move toward independence and self-sufficiency.
A variety of fun community events has grown
out of the Elm Street Revitalization Project, thus
Kevin Rogers
drawing the South Scranton neighborhood closer. The
initiation of the South Side Farmers’ Market provided
a source of fresh foods right in the local neighborhood. An alliance was also created to help local small
business owners come together to network and
receive free training from professionals in areas such
as marketing and branding.
United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern
Pennsylvania continues to make every effort to help
our community members not only deal with the
crises in their lives, but to gain skills and grow so
that they can provide a better, safer and more secure
home environment for their family.
The Board of Directors is proud of the hard-working staff whose compassion and dedication make the
difference to thousands in this community who turn
to United Neighborhood Centers in times of trouble.
This year has continued to challenge the staff and the
resources available to fulfill the increased demand for
services that has resulted from these uncertain times.
I am especially proud of the fact that UNC was
awarded the SAGE Award from the Greater Scranton
Chamber of Commerce for “Non-Profit of the Year”
and the Regional Leadership Award from the NEPA
Alliance, which represents a seven-county area in
Northeastern Pennsylvania. These awards reflect the
wonderful work done by everyone who is associated
with United Neighborhood Centers. I am honored to
serve as the President of the Board of Directors of
this outstanding organization. I thank all those in the
community for their continued generosity and support of this agency.
Sincerely,
”
RECENT NEWS AND
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Merger with SCOLA brings
both challenges and success
On April 1, United Neighborhood Centers approved
a merger between the agency and another local nonprofit, SCOLA Volunteers for Literacy,
that was struggling financially to keep
its doors open. SCOLA now operates as a
fifth department within UNC. This department provides adult literacy education,
civics education, Language Partnership
and English as a Second Language.
Almost immediately after the merger
became official, UNC was notified by the
state that all of SCOLA’s government
funding for traditional literacy services
had been eliminated. Since receiving
the notice, UNC has committed itself to
continuing to provide literacy services for
those in need throughout Lackawanna County by searching for new monetary program support and putting even
greater emphasis on the tutor education.
UNC was awarded the only new family literacy grant
in the state by the PA Department of Education, which
will fund a cooperative learning program among UNC’s
childcare and literacy departments (see more on page 6).
In addition, UNC has made two
prominent partnerships with community organizations.
The Dante Literary Society, through its new sponsorship of SCOLA, will work to raise funds to aid new immigrants, as well as native English speakers, improve
their reading and writing skills. The Tobyhanna Army
Depot’s Community Service Relocation Assistance
Program began a multi-level
language and cross-cultural
training assistance program to service member’s
foreign-born family members
to ensure improved communication skills and cultural
adaption.
UNC also will continue to
host SCOLA’s main fundraising event, the “Chocoholic
Frolic”. The annual event was
held on October 17 at the
Scranton Cultural Center and
was once again well received by the community.
The future for UNC and its newly formed literacy
department look bright despite these unexpected
financial challenges. In 2012, UNC will move the SCOLA
Learning Center to a new office in South Scranton and
continue to expand its program offerings.
UNC joins Alliance for
Children & Families
United Neighborhood Centers recently
became a member
organization of the Alliance
for Children and Families
based out of Milwaukee,
WI. The Alliance for
Children and Families is
directly related to UNC’s
other national partnership,
United Neighborhood Centers of America.
The membership will allow for
networking, training and public advocacy,
as well as act as a center of knowledge
and information for UNC. To learn more
about the Alliance, go to www.alliance1.

Youth carry out graffiti
prevention program
Language Partnership program
flourishes in second year
UNC’s Leaders in Training and its Elm Street Project teamed up over the spring months to create a
graffiti prevention program. The program was funded
by a highly competitive grant (UNC
was only 1 of 3 recipients nationwide) from Keep America Beautiful’s “Graffiti Hurts” campaign.
Students from LIT and other
community members held a PaintOut throughout South Scranton
to remove graffiti from numerous
properties, as well as a neighborhood clean-up.
As a culmination of the project,
UNC hosted a community forum
where youth-created PSAs were aired and certificates of appreciation were given out. Shannon Reiter
from Keep PA Beautiful was the keynote speaker.
UNC’s Language Partnership program, operated through both the Elm Street Revitalization
Project and the literacy education department, has succeeded the agency’s expectations to
become one of the most innovative and popular programs to date. In only its second year,
Language Partnership has welcomed over 150 community members into the program.
Language Partnership brings together Spanish speakers who want to learn English with
English speakers who want to learn Spanish. A class is facilitated by an instructor who creates a new lesson plan each session. Lesson plans usually follow a basic topic such as days
of the week, holidays, animals and more.
The program initially began as a once-a-week session, but due to the increased interest from the community, Language Partnership
now operates four days per week at the South Side
Senior Center and the SCOLA Learning Center. The
program’s popularity has peaked UNC’s interest in
looking for ways to expand Language Partnership
in the future for different languages in addition to
Spanish,
Agency honored with two regional
leadership awards
Congratulations are in order for United Neighborhood Centers. UNC has had the honor of
receiving two prominent leadership awards over the past year. First, the “Regional Leadership
Award” by the NEPA Alliance was awarded to UNC at the organization’s 47th Annual Dinner.
The NEPA Alliance, a multi-county economic development agency, recognized UNC for it’s
housing projects in West Pittston and in South Scranton, among many other initiatives.
In addition, UNC as the agency was named the “Non-Profit of the Year” by the Greater
Scranton Chamber of Commerce’s SAGE Awards. The awards were handed out at the Chamber’s annual gala held at the Mellow Theater.
Project Hope Summer Camp celebrates 41st year
UNC celebrated the 41st Anniversary at Project Hope Summer Camp held
at Camp St. Andrew in Tunkhannock, PA. Board members, staff and parents
got a glimpse of what 533 inner-city youth from Lackawanna County experienced every weekday for 5 weeks between July and August.
The camp features over 550 acres, which includes fields, hiking trails,
a swimming pool and lake to entertain and educate campers. The active
youngsters take part in a wide variety of activities that range from archery,
music, and kayaking to athletics, swimming, and arts and crafts. Project
Hope also features an Adventure Learning Course that includes a rock
climbing wall, zip line and team-building outdoor games.
Project Hope registration for 2012 will begin next May.
Spotlight Youth Theater UNC’s
latest arts initiative
The Spotlight Youth Theater, UNC’s newest arts initiative, was
formed in early 2011 thanks in part to a grant supplied by the Lackawanna County Workforce Investment Board. Since its inception, the
program has quickly become one of the
agency’s most popular youth activities.
Over this past year, the Spotlight Youth
Theater has attracted over 35 community
children between the ages of 5-18 to learn
about drama, acting and theater history. Each child in the Spotlight Youth
Theater group is completely involved in the entire process from costume
and set design, to stage help and choosing songs.
In June 2011, the Spotlight Youth Theater hosted their first performance at the West Side Senior Center. The group performed “Alice in
Wonderland, Jr.” twice for the community. In addition, in December 2011,
the group performed a second production of the “Jungle Book”.
Elm Street Project creates South
Side Business Alliance
UNC’s Elm Street Revitalization Project announced their newest initiative, the
South Side Business Alliance (SSBA). The SSBA will support the development of
early-stage and growing businesses located in South Scranton through activities connecting innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders with one another, as
well as through financial services and training support. The SSBA will partner
with the University of Scranton’s Small Business Development Center to
offer educational training and assistance. Membership in the SSBA is free to
any business located in South Scranton and will include training workshops,
networking sessions, financial guidance, promotion and social media services
and neighborhood clean-ups.
UNC receives grant to implement
Older adults program
LGBTQ advocacy program
brings UNC’s four senior
UNC was awarded one of only four national grants
from Advocates for Youth, a Washington D.C.-based orcenters together
ganization focusing on the health of youth, to become a
partner in their Anti-Homophobia Project. With the grant,
UNC conducted a forum that addressed homophobia and
created safe spaces in UNC’s teen centers for gay, lesbian,
bisexual, transgender
and questioning (GLBTQ)
youth in Lackawanna
County. UNC has formed
a committee, with help
from organizations such
as Lackawanna County
Children and Youth
Services (LCCYS), Maternal Health and Family Services (MFHS), Lackawanna
County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the
Employment Opportunity & Training Center (EOTC), to aid
in the creation of this project. In addition, the project has
partnered with the NEPA Rainbow Alliance to create an “It
Gets Better” video.
UNC’s Older Adults department has been focusing
on creating events and programs that allow the four
centers it operates- South Side, West Side, Mid Valley
and Carbondale- to come together and experience
days as one program.
One such event is an annual picnic held at McDade
Park over the summer where the older adults get to
dance, listen to live music and enjoy the sunshine.
Another event is the department’s second annual
holiday party that is held over Christmas time and allows senior center members to invite their friends and
family from
outside the
agency. Both
events were
attended
by over 180
people each.
UNC chosen to start only new family
literacy program in state
UNC was awarded a Family Literacy grant from the PA Department of Education to provide services to 30
families in Lackawanna County. UNC is proud to be the only new Family Literacy Program funded by the state
this year. UNC’s Family Learning Program is intended to help parents gain the educational and employment skills
they need to move their families toward economic self-sufficiency while empowering them to take an active role
in their children’s learning at school and at home. In partnership with UNC’s Childcare Program, SCOLA and Community Services, the Scranton School District, and the Lackawanna County Public Library, the Family Learning
Program provides integrated services in adult education, early childhood education, parent education, interactive
literacy activities, and home visits.
According to Stephanie Bressler, Director of Community Education and Revitalization, the program is “a
natural fit for UNC, as we work to provide the opportunities and support needed for
families to learn and grow together.”
Community rallies to help UNC
with food shortages
Due to the growing demand for basic necessities and food in Northeast
PA, UNC’s “Angel’s Attic” has been having a difficult time keeping their
pantry well-stocked and available to those most in need throughout
the year. In 2011, UNC handed out 5,833 food baskets alone.
However, the food bank has received some community help
from a variety of local organizations who hosted food drives
benefiting UNC including the Girls Scouts in the Heart of PA,
Parker Hill Community Church, OnePoint, Temple Hesed and
many more.
In addition to these food drives, over 250 community
volunteers were a part of UNC’s annual Thanksgiving Feed-aFriend program that provided a holiday meal to 1500 families in
Lackawanna County.
