Students at Upper Arlington High School and Wellington bring their artwork for visitors to view in the Concourse Gallery. For three decades Yasue Sakaoka has been living and creating in Columbus OH. Yasue’s relationships with artists, arts administrators and arts educators is years in the making—her career arc features many different techniques and expressions, but they are all steeped in a dedication to the arts and arts education. She has spent her entire career exploring ways to share her passion for the arts. I have been privileged to see her diverse work over many years. Yasue’s contributions to the arts in our community involve everything from curating exhibitions to attending receptions and engaging artists and conducting Origami workshops for our community’s further engagement in the arts. “Yasue Sakoaka, born in Japan and widely traveled, combined her Eastern background and Western influences to pioneer transparency of process with her use of hand crafted ephemeral and natural materials (paper, wood) in site-specific installations. Sakaoka has expressed, ‘Paper in Japan is like stone in Italy.’ Her abiding interest in paper folding and geometry is rooted in Japanese traditions of origami as well as her interest in architecture; specifically, the tetrahedron based, geodesic armatures of architect, Buckminster Fuller. Her large-scale paper sculptures allude to the ancient folk art of origami while carrying this tradition forward with more experimental work in paper, fiber and metal for major sculptural installations. Her sculptures in dialogue with architectural space, express a poetic presence…Her work has been shown both in Europe and in the United States at the Galerie International in New York, the Dayton Art Institute, Fitton Center for the Creative Arts, ArtSpace Lima, DVAC, and the Martin Luther King Performing Arts Center in Columbus, among many others. She has curated exhibits around the state and written for countless art publications and catalogues. Designated Master Artist since 1990 in the Ohio Arts Council Traditional Apprenticeship Program, she was awarded the 2007 Ohio Heritage Fellowship. She has received numerous grants and awards, including most recently the 2006 Ohioana Citation for Art and the 2010 Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award. She has been involved in many exhibitions, projects and consultancies that have made substantial contributions to Japanese/American cross-cultural understandings in this region.” – Jeanne Philipp, Art Historian, University of Dayton [AT THE FESTIVAL] BE PART OF THE ART April 7th marks 150 days until we celebrate 50 years of the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, presented once again by First Federal Bank. To commemorate this milestone, the Cultural Arts Division collaborated with Igloo Letterpress to create a limited-edition poster of the Festival’s 50th Anniversary logo. Cultural Arts Coordinator AnnMarie McCallister worked with Igloo Letterpress’s Allison Chapman to create a logo based on four traditional typefaces that would have been in use 50 years ago. UA’s Cultural Arts Commissioners and Festival Planning Committee were treated to an evening at Igloo where they were able to pull prints off of Igloo’s traditional hand press. Be pART of the art and purchase a limited-edition print for $19.66 at either Fresh Crafts Gallery at 2068 Arlington Avenue or in the Parks and Recreation Department in the Municipal Services Center at 3600 Tremont Road.
