Meanwhile, back here in Key NorthWest, we've been busy thinking about where we live. We believe in helping out the beautiful area where we live. Rivers cross this region and we see them every day. They are vital links between cities, waterways for nature, commerce and recreation and they frame the world we live in. Some of us live on them, with Portland having the second largest houseboat community in the world, after Amsterdam. The rain that falls around here eventually finds it's way into any of the dozens of these natural wonders and we all benefit when they are taken care of and allowed to thrive. The next confirmed Jimmy Buffett concert dates are as follows: Last year Steve Eberhard suggested that we clean the area along the Columbia River between the Interstate Bridge and the Railroad Bridge. Near the end of his generous, highly spirited concert on Thursday at the Amway Arena, Buffett did a nice job of explaining the reason as he offered his own thanks for such enduring fan adulation. "I always liked coming here," Buffett said of Orlando. "I know what I'm gonna get." So do the fans and Buffett and his 13-member Coral Reefer Band didn't disappoint at this stop on a mini-tour across Florida. After all these years (the man is 60 now), Buffett is still one of the most reliable commodities in the music business. The songs remain the same and that's OK. In that spirit, there were the usual assortment of signature songs in Buffett's 2-plus hours of music: "Come Monday," "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," "Cheeseburger in Paradise," "Son of a Son of a Sailor," "Fins"and the obligatory "Margaritaville." Early in the show, which was divided into two sets that ran over an hour each, Buffett announced that the band was "fully charged." That showed in a performance that was among the sharpest musical presentations he has offered here in recent memory. It didn't hurt that core members such as guitarist Mac McAnally, percussionist Ralph MacDonald and keyboardist Mike Utley were augmented by a couple of guests: slide guitarist Sonny Landreth and Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne. Buffett exploited the Little Feat connection with a sassy version of "Dixie Chicken" that opened with Payne's raucous, pounding piano solo. Landreth, meanwhile, especially made his presence felt on "I Will Play for Gumbo," which was elevated by his greasy slide work. 2 of 11 5 Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit 6 It's Five O'Clock Somewhere 7 Come Monday 8 Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes 9 Bama Breeze 10 Cheeseburger In Paradise 11 Why Don't We Get Drunk 12 License To Chill 13 One Particular Harbour Intermission 14 Knees Of My Heart 15 Floridays 16 Getting the Picture (not on RM) 17 Window On The World 18 Son Of A Son Of A Sailor 19 A Pirate Looks At Forty 20 Desperation Samba (Halloween In Tijuana) 21 Dixie Chicken 22 Volcano 23 Margaritaville Here we Are Video First Encore: 24 Fins 25 Southern Cross Second Encore: 26 Changing Channels The Clevelander - Miami, FL Saturday February 3rd, 2007 Special Super Bowl show for Anheuser-Busch VIPs 1 Fins 2 Brown Eyed Girl 3 Boat Drinks 4 It's Five O'Clock Somewhere 5 Getting the Picture 6 Weather With You 7 Jamaica Mistaica 8 Come Monday 9 Hey Good Lookin' (with Kenny Chesney) 10 Changes In Latitudes, Changes In Attitudes 11 Cheeseburger In Paradise 12 Bama Breeze 13 Desperation Samba (Halloween In Tijuana) 14 Volcano 15 Margaritaville Along with the monster hits, Buffett also included a nice cross-section of other favorites. "Grapefruit-Juicy Fruit" turned into a swing number atop its steel drums and pedal steel guitar, while "Desperation Samba (Halloween in Tijuana)" showcased the band's feel for Latin rhythms. At other points, Buffett took a quieter approach, doing "A Pirate Looks at Forty" as a duet with McAnally, who offered a melodic acoustic guitar solo. Along with the music, there were the usual assortment of videos on the big screens above the stage — Buffett surfing and frolicking with the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models and fans acting silly in the parking lots — but otherwise there weren't many gimmicks. In the end, when Buffett was alone with his guitar to sing "Tin Cup Chalice," it was a reminder that his style and songwriting, while not too surprising, still work pretty well without all that. Which way to Margaritaville? By Mary Leslie Feb 11, 2007 DEMOCRAT STAFF WRITER An excited throng of fans packed into the sold-out Civic Center on Saturday night, waiting for Jimmy Buffett and his band, The Coral Reefers. A sea of Hawaiian shirts, beads, flowers and grass skirts rumbled with anticipation as the ParrotHeads (Buffett fans) shook hands and toasted cups. Then Buffett, 60, walked on stage with a his 13-piece band and a big grin, waving to audience members seated behind the stage. The singer kicked off his flip flops, grabbed the microphone and smiled. “Let's just get started - what do you think?” he asked. The crowd erupted. The band began with “Brown Eyed Girl,” and the crowd sang along, screaming between each verse. “Just trying to keep summertime alive in February,” said Buffett at the end of the tune. “Now, let's get cookin'.” Scott Green of Ft. Walton Beach, who wore a lei and a grass skirt, brought seven friends to the show and said this was his sixth Buffett concert. “We have followed him around different states,” Green said. “It's exciting every time I see him.” Green said he and his pals had been partying since 3 p.m. and drinking blended concoctions served from the Margaritaville bus. When Buffett began “It's 5 o'clock Somewhere,” the fans raised their hands with five fingers outstretched, waving them around for the band to see. “It's a Saturday night, and it looks like some of you may have started (partying) a little early,” Buffett said. The fans roared. " # Jimmy is in the latest Swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated. Jimmy Buffett Q&A "I'm just doing my part to add a little more escapism to an otherwise crazy world," says Jimmy Buffett, smiling like a man who just tasted the perfect margarita. You'll find plenty of touches of Buffett in this year's Swimsuit issue. The singer-songwriter agreed to donate one of his guitars for charity, and he autographed it—Play well, fins to the left, fins to the right, Jimmy Buffett—before it was passed on to 20 of the models in this issue, each of whom signed the guitar during her photo shoot. The guitar will be auctioned on eBay, with bidding set to close on Feb. 23. The proceeds 3 of 11 The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) offers an honors course called Parrothead Studies. The class studies the phenomenon of Jimmy Buffett fandom as a form of leisure studies. This class is taught by Professor Dan Johnson and Professor Candy Ashton, self-professing Parrot Heads themselves. Here is the course description: "Using various theories of leisure behavior, the Office for Parrothead Research investigates the motivations and experiences of Jimmy Buffet fans (a.k.a. Parrotheads). Students in this seminar will (a) learn and apply various theories of leisure behavior, with a focus on serious leisure, to the Parrothead phenomena; and (b) learn and apply research skills in survey and qualitative methods to study Parrotheads." Last month SI's Richard Deitsch sat down with Buffett (http://www.margaritaville.com/) for a wide-ranging Q&A. SI: Two years ago you wrote a 4,700-word article in the Swimsuit Issue about battling tarpon on a windswept coral reef in the Virgin Islands. You're becoming a Swimsuit issue veteran? Buffett: I'm thinking that's a pretty good thing to be a veteran of (laughs). SI: So why are people inherently drawn to a guitar? Buffett: It's an interesting question because there is a magic about a guitar that is unexplained. I've seen where a song can change people's concepts. The thing about the guitar is the portability of it. If you look back historically, musical instruments were large and cumbersome items that did not have the portability. The thing about a guitar, having played mine in a lot of places, is it goes with me everywhere. I have learned over the years that a guitar is a passport and will diffuse situations. It really allows you go beyond borders. The fact that you can carry a guitar with you and create magic and joy, not to get too sappy and romantic about it, it's a cherished thing. It's magic in and of itself. SI: Have you played the guitar that's being auctioned? Buffett: It was my studio guitar at my place in Sag Harbor. And I played it when we went down to do the video in St. Barts. It plays great. It traveled well. It seemed when the girls got the guitar, it was like a teddy bear. One of the photographers, Pamela Hanson, told me the guitar became like a mascot out there. I love that because I think that brings out the magic of the guitar. When I was looking at all the footage of the Swimsuit shoots to assemble a video for SI, I loved that a lot of the girls were saying, ‘Oh, I just wish I could play it.' I think that guitar had a pretty good time out there. I know I wish I could have been caressed by that many beautiful women. SI: The guitar you donated is one of only 168 in existence. Why did you choose that particular guitar for SI? Buffett: I did two guitars with the Martin Company and the Shellback is my favorite. A Martin Guitar is really the pièce de résistance. In fact, I know exactly where I was when I bought my first Martin. SI: So where were you? Buffett: Chappy's music store in Pascagoula, Mississippi. It was 1967 and it cost me $418. That was a lot of money at the time. The Martin guitar is not a musical Jimmy recently was part of the Sports Illustrated instrument. It's a piece of art. We did the first one and it sold out in no time at all. They came back and the right about that. asked if I wanted to do another but I didn't want to get over-commercialized. I had a Martin that was my boat guitar. It went everywhere around the world with me and was Jimmy Buffett's video of "Getting the Picture" is on stolen out of a boat somewhere down in the Caribbean. I miss that guitar so much. It was a guitar I could throw on bunk. It wouldn't warp and I didn't have to baby it. It just iTunes. Tiki Barber's final game (the Pro Bowl) included a worked. You to the Ravens' Ed Reed during the first-quarter, don't get quite the resonating tones of the wood but it didn't matter to me. I wanted halfback option pass. The play was designed by Jimmy when NFC coach Sean Payton was out on something that you could backpack around the world with. Buffett's boat a few days before Super Bowl XLI in SI: The proceeds from the sale will benefit both the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic Miami. and the Habitat for Humanity Musicians' Village. Why those charities? Jimmy played a small concert the night before the Buffett: I was born in a little town called Pascagoula, which was devastated by the Super Bowl in South Beach for Anheiser Busch (thefolks maikng Landshark Lager). He was joined storm and is not so much on the recovery radar. So I've been trying to focus attention there and get help. I believe simply New Orleans is the cultural soul of America and by Kenny Chesney for "Hey Good Lookin". The needs to be saved. There are plenty of problems there , and there always will be. But set list is above. there is a unique thing about New Orleans culturally: Whether we like it or not or know Some of the ads for the upcoming tour dates are it or not, we need New Orleans. After some prying, she was released. Once that was done, Buffett and friends, including 83-year-old Marius Stackelbough of Le Select, enjoyed a brief christening, then he went out for an afternoon sail. the world. I have been in worst places to get inspired. Mac McNally, who is my producer, kind of came up with the chorus and I worked on the verses. The fact of it was we could either be subtle or tongue in cheek about it. Or we could just be totally shameless and throw Sports Illustrated in (laughs) the lyrics. It's fun and escapism, not a big stretch for me. What was fun was you were really writing a fun song. Upcoming Events In Key NorthWest SI: Did any of the models in the video ask you for guitar lessons? Buffett: Yeah, Brooklyn (Decker) asked me for guitar lessons. The rest of my family were Auburn fans so just for spite I just rooted for Alabama. Later on I became an LSU fan when I dated a girl from LSU. My allegiances were not cemented. SI: But your real passion is the New Orleans Saints, right? Buffett: I was at the first win for the franchise in 1967. It was against the Eagles and Walter "The Flea" Roberts ran a kickoff for a touchdown. I have been a New Orleans fan since the very beginning. SI: So this year must have been unbelievable? Buffett: I was in Tangiers for the Saints-Eagles playoff game. The hit Reggie Bush took was one of the hardest hits I've ever seen. When he got up, well, I know about adrenaline and I know about crowds. When he got up I said to myself: they are going to win the Super Bowl. SI: Any memorable sports-related gigs as a kid? Buffett: I was a water boy for the Senior Bowl in Mobile. We were part of the South team. Afterward, we got the chin straps, jock straps, and programs. And we got them all signed. There were no Ebay then but we sold them. That was my first kind of awareness of big time. SI: How did you end up a Cubs fan? Buffett: I ended up a Cubs fan because Chicago is one of the first major cities out of South where I had enough popularity to make a living. In doing so I wound in the company of (folk singer and songwriters) Steve Goodman and John Prine during that great folk era in Chicago. I was always a baseball fan because Mobile, Alabama had a lot of baseball heritage with the Aaron brothers and a minor league team. There was no major league teams in the South in those days. When I got to Chicago we worked at night. So Goodman would take me to Wrigley Field during the day and we would buy a ticket in the bleachers. I remember seeing Willie Mays play for the Mets against the Cubs. That was an amazing event for me. So those developing years musically for me I spent a lot of time in Chicago and at Wrigley Field. And then last year we played the field. We did two days there. It was amazing. Ironically enough, that was the weekend New Orleans was flooded so I had a huge mixture of emotions. Buffett: Well, I got one of two game balls for the San Francisco game. That's when I told them I'd see them in Miami. It was a pretty cool thing. I gave the ball to my son for Christmas. SI: The best sporting event you have attended because of your celebrity? Buffett: Playing a show at Wrigley Field qualifies to me as a sporting event. But the best event I went to as a fan was Game 6 of the Pistons-Heat series last year when we put them away. SI: You're a Miami Heat season ticket holder, right? Buffett: Always have been from Day One. I sit on the floor. We're going to be okay this year. What has been nice is Jason Kapono has been getting time. And I think Dorell Wright is going to be a player. When they won last year I was most happy for Alonzo Mourning. He's an old friend of mine and that guy has been through some stuff. That guy works his butt off. "Truth is stranger than fiction" department updates: SI: Let's talk about one of the great moments in NBA history: Your ejection from the Knicks-Heat game on Feb. 4, 2001? Buffett: There is a long list of people I have met but I'd say Zinedine Zidane. I loved his style of play. I took my son to the World Cup in Germany. I was a fan of the "He was just thrashing around in the water ... starting to Trinidad soccer team and we went to see the England match. You know, I've traveled the world a lot. Many species of sharks are common in Australian waters, and there are an average of 15 shark attacks per year in the country — roughly one person each year is killed by a shark. The proceeds will go to the New Orleans Musicians' Clinic and the Habitat for Humanity Musicians' Village, two organizations close to Buffett's heart. "I was born in a little town called Pascagoula [Miss.], which was devastated by Katrina," says Buffett, who has worked to focus attention on the area. "I believe New Orleans is the cultural soul of America and needs to be saved." This isn't the first collaboration between Buffett and SI. Two years ago he wrote a 4,700-word article in the Swimsuit Issue about battling tarpon on a windswept coral reef in the Virgin Islands. Along with his whimsical fishing tale, the issue included a CD that featured a single Buffett wrote for the issue, License to Chill, and a video of him singing the tune. Because of the success of that venture and his longtime friendship with SI Group editor Terry McDonell (the two have known each other since the late 1970s), Buffett was happy to join forces with SI again. In this issue you'll find another CD with a catchy new Buffett song, Getting the Picture, plus an accompanying video starring (and inspired by) some of the world's most beautiful women, fiddling with one very lucky instrument. Since being donated to SI, the mahogany guitar has traveled to 14 cities in four countries on two continents. It has docked in posh surroundings (Four Seasons Maui, The Caves in Negril, Jamaica) and tight but memorable quarters (Oluchi Onweagba strummed the guitar in the same tiny room at Sun Studio in Memphis where Elvis Presley recorded his first album in 1954). The guitar's odyssey began in late August with a circuitous journey from Buffett's home in Sag Harbor, N.Y., to the Brazilian resort town of Itacaré, with one precarious layover in São Paulo. There it was nearly confiscated by customs officers before a quick-thinking Kaplan explained to them that it was part of an SI Swimsuit shoot. Upon 7 of 11 another 10 to 15 minutes. "I have learned over the years that a guitar is a passport," he said. "It really allows you to go beyond borders." At the Swimsuit shoots, the photographers handed the guitar to the models with few instructions. "It was like: Here's the guitar, and let's see what happens," says Marisa. "I had never posed with a guitar before, and while I didn't want it to look like I was making out with it, I did want it to be sexy. So I snuggled with it and gave it a hug. I wanted it to feel wanted." It certainly was. Ten girls kissed the guitar for the cameras (by one staffer's estimation) and all decorated it in their own style. Brazilian model Raica Oliveira signed Paz y Amor (Peace and Love, in Portuguese) along with her name. Israeli model Bar Refaeli wrote Peace, Love and Lots and Lots of Music in Hebrew, while Anne V penned a giant heart and wrote With Love in Russian. Anne says regretfully that as a kid in Nizhni Novgorod she quit guitar lessons after just a week. "I realized I don't have enough patience," she says. "People who conquer this, though, can make such beautiful music." And for those musicians who were so terribly affected by Katrina, SI is proud to have a chance to assist them. Says Swimsuit editor Diane Smith, "A lot of the girls were touched that their beauty could do something to help others." As the CEO of BubbleUp Media in The Woodlands, Sisson and his team design and create Web sites for major label recording artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Big & Rich and Gretchen Wilson. The sites feature the artists' home page, with interviews, tour dates, merchandise and news. Once a software engineer, Sisson climbed the corporate ladder, eventually landing a management position in customer support at a computer software company. In 1990, someone handed Sisson a note that changed his life. "Someone brought me a note that Jimmy Buffett had called," he said. "I thought it was a joke. His hard drive had crashed and he was working on a book on it. I got it back. He started calling me with computer questions, and I trained him to use the computer. If he hadn't been a musician, he would have been a really good computer engineer." Building a friendship The King Cake Story The King Cake is believed to have been brought to New Orleans, Louisiana, from France in the 1870's. It evolved from the Twelfth Night or Epiphany pastry made by those early settlers. They added their own touches with the Spanish custom of choosing Twelfth Night royalty. A King Cake is shaped like a crown to represent the kings. A dried bean or pea was hidden inside the cake and whoever found it received a year of good luck and was treated as royalty for that day. Starting around the 1930s, a tiny naked baby was used instead of the bean or pea. The baby can be pink, brown, or golden. Some people believe that the baby represents the baby Jesus because Twelfth Night was when the three kings found the baby in Bethlehem. The payback for being king or queen for the day is that person has to buy the king cake for the next day. That can cost from $4.00 - $6.00 for a small, plain grocery store cake to $25.00 for an elaborately filled and decorated cake. King Cake season lasts throughout Mardi Gras from Epiphany until Mardi Gras Day. The royal colors of purple, green and gold on the cake honors the three kings who visited the Christ child on Epiphany. Purple represents Justice. Green stands for Faith. Gold signifies Power. The three colors appeared in 1872 on a Krewe of Rex carnival flag especially designed for the visiting Grand Duke of Russia. He came to New Orleans just for the carnival, and the universal colors remain his legacy. Here are the ingredients: 1/4 cup butter or margarine 1 (16-oz.) carton sour cream 1/3 c. sugar 1 t. salt 1 pkgs. dry yeast 1 T. sugar Sisson said the tech support phone call resulted in a friendship with Buffett and continued involvement in helping the musician access the Internet and new technology. While he spent his days working in a career far from his engineering roots, Sisson moonlighted as Buffett's "chief tech officer." When Buffett was considering buying an AM radio station to broadcast Cuban baseball games in Key West, Fla., he sent Sisson to investigate. "I didn't know anything about radio," he said. "I said, 'You know, I think the Internet is going to have radio.' He asked if we could do an Internet radio station. So we started Radio Margaritaville. I don't know if we were the first, but we certainly were one of the first." Now BubbleUp Media boasts 35 clients in the music and business world. Using a small office staff and people abroad, the company allows Sisson to return to his roots as a software engineer. Without Buffett's influence, Sisson said life would be very different. "I'd be stuck in a company wearing a tie today," he said, dressed in a collared shirt and blue jeans. "First of all, I started as a software engineer, but as I climbed in my career, I became more and more involved with management. I got further away from the craft. "Knowing Jimmy is what made me stay involved in tech, in what I love. I doubted I would have started this company. Music and technology are my passions." Sisson said his friendship and working relationship with Buffett propelled him to take a chance. Links on the Web The Web sites Sisson and his team create are a link between hungry fans and famous stars, but boiled down to the most basic function, the sites are about communication and commerce. "We're in the business of helping businesses," Sisson said. "One of the things we do is to help fans. We help reach those fans and help them get what they want from the artist." Sisson said there are three principles to focus on when creating a site: an accessible platform, streamlined theme and good customer relations."You've got to have a technical platform where it's fast and easy to get the site built," he said. "The experience on the site should be the same from message board to home to fan site. An ugly Web site that sells something is better than a pretty one that doesn't. "Also, customer service — respond to e-mails, make sure the site represents artists in the best possible ways. The third thing is marketing. You've got to capture the vibe of that artist, to give (fans) something they find valuable."Sisson said high-speed Internet has changed the templates of fan sites. Now with streaming audio and video, fans can get that much closer to an artist. Mike Newman, vice president of marketing and service at BubbleUp Media, handles 9 of 11 1/2 c. warm water (105 º to 115 º) 2 eggs 6 to 6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 t. ground cinnamon 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened Colored frostings Colored Sugars Combine the first 4 ingredients in a saucepan; heat until butter melts, stirring occasionally. Add butter mixture, eggs, and 2 cups of flour; beat at medium speed with an electric mixer for 2 minutes or by hand until smooth. Gradually stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn dough out onto a lightly-floured surface, and knead until smooth and elastic (about 10 minutes). Place in a well-greased bowl, turning to grease top. Cover and let rise in a warm place free from drafts, for 1 hour or until dough is doubled in bulk. the fan clubs, answering e-mails and posting touring dates, along with keeping visitors posted on contests and news. "The process is down really well," he said. "We try to make a factory out of the process." While some parts are mechanical, Newman said drafting articles for the sites requires some real thought. "When I write new articles for Gretchen Wilson and Big & Rich, I try to get in the heads of the artist and try to understand how they think." As for the artists, Sisson said their main goal is keeping fans happy."They want to take care of their fans," he said. "More established, mature artists are fanatical about their fans. It's a business. There is a time to play and a time to work. Never get it mixed up." Looking ahead The same goes for Sisson's personal work ethic. As his company has grown, he said he's eyeing local Woodlands businesses. Besides helping music artists sell mugs and dog tags and connect with fans, Sisson said businesses need the same help reaching customers. Sisson said he brings the corporate world to the music business and the flair of music marketing to the corporate jungle. "I've never been afraid to try something out," he said. "That's the way I live my life anyway. I love great ideas. If they don't work, maybe it was bad timing." Sisson said the feeling of finishing a site and casting it into the public eye is akin to a musician strumming the final chord. Combine 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon; set aside. "The best part is when we launch (a site)," he said. "It feels like when an artist gets applause on stage. When we get e-mails about how much people love the site, it's pride, it's passion, all of those are things that make you happy and smile." Pinch dough down and it divide in half. Turn one portion of dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and roll to a 28" X 10" rectangle. Spread half of the butter and half of the cinnamon mixture on the rolled out dough. Roll dough, jelly roll fashion, starting at the long side. Gently place dough roll, seam side down, on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bring ends of dough together and form an oval ring. If you have access to a tiny plastic baby, tuck it into the seam before you seal it. If not, use a large, dried bean. Moisten and pinch the edges together to seal. Repeat this procedure with the second half of the dough. Cover and let rise in a warm place, free from drafts, 20 minutes or until doubled in bulk.
