Engraving at Village
Silversmith
By: Katy Lovasco
At Village SIlversmith, we
have three fully trained engraving
professionals, and as a company
we’ve been engraving for almost
ten years creating tons of unique
items and set ups.
Our engravers work on a
Signature Engraving machine
which uses an all diamond
tipped spindle head. The
machine is computerized, which
makes the engravers job much
easier. However, they do have to
line up the item being engraved
in the machine precisely for the
engraving to be perfect.
Because of the type of
engraving machine we use, we
can engrave on many types of
surfaces including almost any
metal, glass, plastics, and stone.
With over fifty types of fonts and
symbols, almost any item can be
personalized.
Another specialty of this
unique machine is the ability to
transfer handwritten items.
Anyone’s handwriting can be
transferred digitally into our
engraving computer and used to
make the engraving even more
special. Once the initial
computer transfer is done, the
handwriting font can be used
over and over again.
A new feature of this
engraving machine we will soon
be offering is the ability to pierce
metal to cut out names, single
letters, and numbers. This new
add on will be available this year
so keep an ear out for more
news!
Popular items that we carry
in the stores for engraving are
s ig ne t ring s , ID b race l e t s ,
charms, lockets, frames,
wedding gifts, baby gifts, money
clips, cuff links, business card
holders, and swiss army knives.
Or you could get creative and
have cuffs, our gallery pendants,
or the inside of rings engraved
with names, quotes, or
monograms. The options are
endless so have fun and make it
personal!

Rubies, Rubies, Rubies!
July’s Birthstone
By: Katy Lovasco
This red to pink gem is a rarity
in the gem world and is the month
of July’s birthstone.
Ruby is the red variety of the
mineral corundum, one of the
hardest minerals on Earth. It’s a
cousin to sapphire and slight
traces of minerals such as
chrome, iron, titanium or vanadium
are responsible for the red color.
These minerals are all extremely
hard making rubies a 9 on the
Mohs scale out of 10. The history
of Ruby mining dates back more
than 2,500 years ago.
Most of the rubies that we set
are from India, though rubies are
found in micro-deposits across
the globe. Indian rubies tend to
have a brighter magenta to red
coloring. They have a great luster
and deep color, which some of the
traditional rubies can lose because
of the translucence.
At Village Silversmith, we love
the unique! One of the most
unique color combination of
stones that we carry is ruby in
zoisite.
The green zoisite rock carries
black hornblende mineral
inclusions
and large, mostly opaque, ruby.
Cut and polished ruby in zoisite
specimens have a great price
range that will vary according to
the quality and presence of ruby.
Most specimens will display
three colors; green, black and red.
Zoisite is a relative to tanzanite
and is only found in Tanzania.
Ruby is considered to be the
birthstone for Cancer (the sign of
the crab) and relate to those born
between June 22nd and July 22nd.
Ruby is associated with the
qualities of devotion, integrity,
courage and happiness. The
traditional metaphysical properties
are vitality, confidence and
strength. The healing properties of
rubies are reputed to be effective
for health problems relating to the
blood and infection and increasing
positive thought patterns. Ruby is
also used to enhance energy,
generosity and to bring prosperity
and success.
At Village Silversmith, we carry
rubies and ruby in zoisite in
pendants, rings, earrings,
bracelets, and beaded necklaces.
Prices will vary greatly depending
on the quality and size of the
rubies, but generally will be much
more affordable than rubies found
in the mass market.

Hecho a mano is spanish for
“made by hand,” which is exactly
what this jewelry is!
Hecho a mano is a family
business, similar to ours, which
started in Taxco, Mexico. One
man’s interest in metal working
drove him to learn the trades of
lapidary and silversmithing. He then
passed it on to his son and the
generations to come. This created
an extremely talented family of
silversmiths. Now, they produce
their gorgeous one of a kind
jewelry for a select few stores
across the country.
Hecho a mano is known for their
impeccable detail, creativity, and
animal work. The pieces that they
create for Village Silversmith start
with our stones, which we have
prepared by cutting and polishing.
Then, the stones are sent to
Mexico where they turned into
amazing creations.
The family, because of their
impeccably detailed work, create
amazing jewelry which include their
specialty, animal motifs. Some of
the pieces made for us include a
green turquoise and silver mermaid
necklace (pictured to the left), a
wrap around alligator necklace with
malachite eyes, an elegant calla lily
necklace made with a turquoise
stem and a 16k gold blossom, and
a sterling octopus made with
turquoise inlay. This octopus motif
was originally designed for Jacque
Cousteau’s daughter who wears it
with pride.
Recently, Hecho has done
amazing designs for our most
spectacular stone cabochons
(pictured to the left). The silver on
these settings are high shine and
brushed textured with accenting
swirls.
Some of Hecho’s work can be
found our Rockport and Gloucester
stores but is mainly showcased in
our Northshore Mall location.

Rhodochrosite

Pictured below: Rhodochrosite cuff with
vine and leaf setting, gem rhodochrosite
pendant, and heart rhodochrosite ring
Rhodochrosite is a gorgeous
varying pink and white stone found
primarily in South America. This
beauty is formed when manganese
is dissolved by ground water and
combines with a carbonate material
and then drips off the ceiling of
caves and crevices deep
underground. The name rhodochrosite means
rose-colored, and it is that color
that the stone widely known for.
Because the stone has a saturated
pink tone (a very hard natural
mineral color to find), it is highly
sought after. There are two main
types of rhodochrosite. The less
common type, is the gem quality,
semi translucent, all over deep pink
stone. The “bacon” rhodochrosite
which is stripped pink and white is
found more commonly but is
equally beautiful.
Folklore states that
rhodochrosite was worshiped by the
Incas. They called it Incan Rose
because they believed that it was
the blood of their former kings and
queens turned to stone.
Metaphysically, rhodochrosite is
thought to be a very powerful stone
that is used to help the fourth
chakra and cleanse the heart
chakra. Its powers include
attracting love, helping release past
psychological issues, and
improving eyesight. Rhodochrosite
is thought to relieve stress and is
used by healers to cleanse the
aura.
At Village Silversmith, we love
all types and forms of
rhodochrosite and each of our
stores offer a large collection. We
carry magnificent large pendants
(pictured on the cover), as well as
all other sized pendants, rings,
bracelets, earrings, and beads.

Sea Life Jewelry
By: Katy Lovasco
Village Silversmith has
always taken pride in being
from the North Shore. Because
of this, we offer an immense
amount of nautical jewelry in
our collection.
In Rockport, the town
where Village Silversmith began,
the ocean is the largest
attraction and nautical items are
the largest commodities. So,
naturally throughout the years,
we have built a large collection
of nautical jewelry.
We love traditional charms
in varying designs and sizes
such as shells, lighthouses,
starfish, sand dollars, whales
tails, lobsters, dolphins, and
more! We also carry all of these
deigns in larger sizes that are
more appropriate for necklaces.
One of our more popular
nautical lines are the multi-link
nautical bracelets in both high
shine and antiqued silver. These
bracelets come in different
themes such as shells, sand
dollars, starfish, turtles, fish,
and many more. The most
popular of these bracelets are
the mixed shell designs. With
sand dollars, mussels, scallops,
and conk shells, these bracelets
appeal to almost everyone.
We also love to incorporate
shells, sand dollars, and sea
animals into nautical designs
with our stone jewelry. Like our
vine and leaf settings, these
nautical accents look like very
small charms that are tucked on
to the bezel of the piece to add
a bit of flair and a whole new
look to a simply set stone.
In our collection, we also
set stones that are half ovals as
bottoms to sail boats and
create the sails of the pendant
with silver. Larimar, one of our
specialty stones, is our favorite
to set in a nautical theme
because of its coloration and its
resemblance to the ocean.
At Village Silversmith, you’ll
find sea life charms, bracelets,
earrings, pendants, and rings.
For all of your nautical jewelry
needs, visit any of our five
stores (especially during the
summer) for tons of choices!
