This past summer, Lutherans Outdoors hosted a record-breaking 4,091
campers at NeSoDak, Outlaw Ranch, Klein Ranch, and Joy Ranch, each
experiencing Christ’s love in community and creation!
How to reacH us
“My daughter, Arden, really enjoyed
Klein Ranch! She felt she learned
about God at campfire, while riding
horses, and she enjoyed going to fun
places for Bible Study. I feel like her
faith has grown so much at her three
camp experiences.” Lori Koenecke,
parent of Klein Ranch camper

Nothing will be able to separate us from the love
of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:39)
This year’s Bible Study, then, isn’t only a study of the Bible, but it is
an entry point into the Way of God: reflecting on and experiencing
and acting out the promise that nothing--really nothing--can
separate us from the love of Christ Jesus.

Raises $32,500 for
LO’s Camping Ministry
Friends of Lutherans Outdoors gathered at the
beautiful offices of Vance Thompson Vision
Center in Sioux Falls this fall to celebrate all
things CAMP! Jesse & Miguel, youth from
Pueblo de Dios Lutheran Church, joined
musicians Kevin & Mara Stillson, and Dustin
Pederson to sing camp songs while guests
sipped delicious Jessup Cellars wine, courtesy
of Dan & Becky Blue. Stories from camp were
also shared by Gregg, JJ and Gage Gohl
along with Tamme & Tommy Berdahl.
A Special thank you to Shirley and Fred
Stephens for their generous $10,000
Challenge Gift for this event! These dollars
raised enable LO to keep the cost of camp
more affordable for children and their families
AND to offer a robust campership program for
any camper with financial need. Thank you

Spring 2015 Issue
The Heritage Society of Lutherans Outdoors was established in 1987 as a way to encourage
and recognize those individuals and families who choose to provide a legacy of ministry
beyond their lifetime. Membership in the Heritage Society is for all who include Lutherans
Outdoors in South Dakota in their estate plan or through a planned gift.
The gifts received from the planned gifts of Heritage
Society members will be permanently invested and the
earnings used to enhance the ministry and programs
of Lutherans Outdoors for generations to come.
You are invited to consider providing, through a
planned or estate gift, a legacy that will far outlive
you in its impact on the lives of children and families
through the Christ-centered ministry of Lutherans
Outdoors.
Assistance with gift planning is available, at no cost or
obligation, by contacting Karen at Lutherans Outdoors
at 1-800-888-1464.
lo endowment
Makes a Huge Impact!
Thanks to the foresight of our Heritage Society members, earnings and growth from the
LO Endowment provided $36,175 in 2014 to enhance and support the ministry of
Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota!
By Keeping camp Fees as low as Possible
The dollars provided by the LO Endowment help us keep our camp fees more affordable for
children and their families. In fact, the LO Board voted to freeze camp fees for 2015! Income
from the endowment makes that possible!
By supplementing the campership Fund
Do you have a will? Is it current, reflecting your present circumstances
and wishes?
It is important you have an up-to-date will because a will can accomplish
so much for you, your heirs, and others.
For example, a will provides a way to have all you possess distributed
according to your wishes, not as the state determines through state law.
In your will, you can and should make specific provisions for all that you
have and for all whom you love.
A will can also help save money through avoiding unnecessary
expenses and through reducing state inheritance and federal estate
taxes. And, a will is a wonderful way to help young and old alike have
an inspiring Christian Outdoor Ministry experience through a bequest to
Lutherans Outdoors in South Dakota as well as to make provisions for
your church or another charity.
In 2014, LO gave out an unprecedented $77,634 in camperships to children, families, and
those with special needs, ensuring no child is turned away from camp due to financial
reasons.
“Each year, we receive an increasing number of requests for camperships,” reports Karen
Kraus, Development Director, “which we are happy to provide. We are so grateful to our
generous donors, whose gifts make it possible to fulfill these requests!”.
With $66,945 from our annual campership appeal and $10,689 from our endowment growth
and earnings, we were able to fully fund these request. This meant….
.......youth from Pueblo de Dios went to confirmation camp at NeSoDak
.......families from The Banquet and St. Francis House made lifelong memories at Joy Ranch
Because we feel it is beneficial for everyone to have a will, and one that
is up-to-date, we are making a FREE “Wills Guide” available.
........Pine Ridge youth participated in Outlaw Ranch youth camp
This very readable folder will answer many of the questions you may
have about wills and will aid you in fulfilling your wishes in regard to the
distribution of your estate.
.......Special needs families enjoyed a much-needed respite at “We Get It” Family Camp
You can obtain your free copy of this helpful folder

.......and every child who needed a campership got to come to camp!
“Thank you for the campership! I can just imagine how my week would feel if all of my friends
went to camp and I could not go because my family couldn’t afford to send me to camp. May
God bless your family!” Madelyn
By providing seminary scholarships
The Courtney Walker Staff Enhancement Fund of the Lutherans Outdoors Endowment
provides annual scholarships to current and former camp staff who go on to attend seminary.
This year’s recipients, Wartburg Seminary students, Halcyon Bjornstad and Alyssa Weber,
each received a $300 scholarship. This fund was created in memory of a wonderful young
woman, Courtney Walker, who made an impact on all who knew her, including those whose
lives she touched as a summer camp counselor at Outlaw Ranch.
Halcyon says, “Working at LOSD gave me the chance to learn about ministry before seminary.
My experience helped me to understand that I was being called to seminary. I am so grateful
for the support from LOSD!” And from Alyssa, “I love studying theology and ministry and am
eager to apply what I have learned to a ministry setting. I am grateful for the gift of LOSD
which has been a major part of my life, being from South Dakota!”

Living in God’s Time
Letter from The Executive Director
Dear Faithful Partners in Ministry,
The Bible study theme for your camps in 2014 was, “Living in God’s Time”. This theme helped
introduce our guests to the “seasons” of the church year (Advent, Christmas, Lent...), but it also
did much more. It connected with people on a personal level that helped them see the presence
of God in Christ with them in their lives regardless of the “seasons of life” they may be going
through.
This was really driven home to me this fall when a SD pastor shared this story...Upon
finding out there was going to be a guest speaker in church that day, the pastor’s young
grandson asked her what they were going to be taking about. When the answer didn’t quite
satisfy him, he told her, “They should really talk about how we are living in God’s time”, and
the elementary aged grandson proceeded to list off the seasons of the church year and
how God connects with us during each of them.
2014 was a very busy year that saw us reach a 10 year record in summer camp
attendance through onsite and day camp programs. This happened in large part because
we took seriously the mandate that All Are Welcome, and we reached out to populations
who might not have come to camp in the past, but whom desperately need to hear the
Gospel message and to experience Christian community. In the midst of this, the trend of
people signing up for camp later and later, and of coming to camp for shorter time periods
continued. This is a part of the change we are experiencing, and we are addressing this.
This is what prompted our first, “early bird registration discount”.
Another trend we saw was the growing need for CAMPERSHIP dollars. In 2014 we gave away
more than 3 times the amount of camp scholarship money than we did just 5 years ago. Yet, it
really impacted the ability for people to have a camp experience. As we continue to reach out to
our communities, I anticipate this trend continuing.
To help address this, your camps have launched a major effort to grow the endowment. I am
convinced this effort will have significant, long-term impact on outdoor ministry in SD (and on
the Church as so many of today’s leaders continue to come out of your camps). Much of this
endowment effort will happen as people remember their camps in their estate plans. I ask you to
prayerfully consider this in your own families, as my wife Jennifer and I have. I am able to see
the impact on ministry today that was made possible by the generous and faithful decisions of
those who came before me. It has a life changing impact.
The ministry that happens through the community formed at camp matters. Please keep the
guests and staff in your prayers for a powerful year ahead in 2015. And hopefully you have seen
people wearing “Living in God’s Time” t-shirts around your community. So I ask you, “What
season are you experiencing today in your life...?” Whatever season it is, trust that God walks
with you. See you at camp!
Rev. Layne Nelson,
Executive Director

Letter from The President
Celebrate comes to mind as we look back on 2014
Celebrate that we welcomed over 4000 campers this year. A 10 year high!
We commemorated and honored the Linskov’s and Arnold’s for their
unflagging support and investment in our mission at Klein by holding our
summer board meeting with them. Their generosity enabled us to begin the
planning and execution of a kitchen update at Klein.
We rejoice in the fact that we are finally beginning to make plans for staff
housing improvements at NeSoDak.
We celebrate our staff. Truly the best in the business. I get choked up every
time I have an opportunity to witness their passion and enthusiasm. Our
ministry is constantly evolving and each and every member of our staff strives
to stay ahead of the curve. We thank the good Lord for their presence with us.
The Outlook
LO Serves nearly
19,000 People in 2014
In 2014, the camps and year-round retreat centers of
LOSD served 18,660 people through summer programs
and year-round retreats. This provides places and programs that enrich the lives of all campers, staff and
guests. We are a place of peace, learning, extended family and a place where God is present in holy moments.
It is our hope that you find in your heart and mind the
Lutherans Outdoors has a place for YOU!
All the cabin dwellers got to enjoy all the new cabin decks at Outlaw this summer. A grand
addition to the majesty only the Black Hills can create.
We rejoice that we are turning the corner financially. Increases in operating cost as Joy
Ranch really had its first full year fully staffed along with other operational increases really
presented a challenge. However, good fiscal management, a good plan moving forward
and a very good year from all our supporters and investors we are now treading in the right
direction once again. Oh yeah, I failed to mention there was some good old fashion prayer
involve in our turnaround as well. Thank you Lord!
We kicked into high gear our New Frontier Campaign to burn our mortgage at Joy Ranch
and at the same time kick off our new $10 million Endowment Fund. We are well on our way
to reaching those goals. We have raised $1.2 million of our $3 million retire the mortgage a
campaign and raised $579,000 toward our Endowment Fund.
Speaking of the Endowment campaign we formed a new re- energized and very dynamic
Endowment committee. What a wonderful way to celebrate our families and our good fortunes
by doing some deliberate thoughtful planned giving. What a legacy we can leave! Please
give it some prayerful consideration.
Finally, we can continue the celebration by signing up for Family camp. If you have not
been in a while now is great time. I remember our last family camp experience. We took
four generations with us, my mother in law, our kids and grand kids. It charged all of our
batteries and brought us closer together as a family. I truly don’t know where else in the
world we could go to do that. It will always remain as one of my finest memories. Please
take advantage of this life renewing experience

Rev Layne Nelson, Executive Director gave an opening prayer. Bob Scott, Board of Directors
President, called the meeting to order at 9:30 AM. Throughout the meeting, brief video
greetings from each LO camp were shared.
Bob Scott, presented the minutes of the 2013 meeting. Motion to approve, seconded and
passed. Rev Jared Rakness, Treasurer, presented the treasurer’s report. The report includes
figures of the 2013 fiscal year which runs Feb 1st through January 30th. 2013 was a strong
year in gifts received. 1900 acres of pasture land at Klein Ranch were sold with a permanent
easement that will allow LO to continue to use the land during the summer, with no disruption
of programming. The money from this sale is being used to pay off some internal debt, give a
jump-start to the staff housing project at NeSoDak, Klein Ranch kitchen/dining update, and a
$350,000 deposit was made to the endowment fund. The endowment fund has now reached
$1.1 million. The registration cost of one camper is about $400/week while the actual cost
is about $600/per person. Motion to approve the treasurer’s report, seconded and passed.
Karen Kraus, LO Development Director, reported on gifts by individuals and corporations. The
‘New Frontier’ campaign has begun with the goal of raising $3 million. $800,000 in pledges
have already been received to date. There was also an additional anonymous challenge
gift to the LO Board of Directors of $50,000 which has already received $43,000 in pledges
towards the housing project at NeSoDak and kitchen project at Klein Ranch.
Bob Scott, President, gave a report. Recognition was given the LO Board members and
their dedication to the ministry and support of all LO camps. Bob introduced Jody NiemannPriest, who shared her family’s connection to LO Riding for a Reason camp at Joy Ranch.
Her moving story included the positive experience at Joy Ranch with her son, Wyatt, who
has some frustrations with motor and speech. Her joyful experience included her whole
family being able to share in watching Wyatt horseback riding which was a priceless gift to
see Wyatt happy, successful, and engaged.
Bob Scott continued pointing out that there are both challenges and opportunities in outdoor
ministry. The LO Board and staff is driven to share Christ’s love in community and creation
to reach those of all ages looking for guidance and belonging. LO is also building disciples to
be set free through this powerful ministry. There are many who get their true call to seminary
while experiencing camp.
Rev Layne Nelson, Executive Director, gave a report. He thanked all who have been
passionate in continuing the ministry of Lutherans Outdoors and thanked the LO staff for
their efforts and dedication. Rev Dwight Stensgaard has now joined the LO team to work
as the Development Associate – Campaign Director. A CD, “Songs we LOve” will be given
to all of the congregations today to bring back and share with their community, with a url for
a downloadable songbook. “No Matter What May Come, God will not let you Go,” will be
the 2015 Bible study theme.
The Board of Directors and staff were introduced and thanked for their commitment to camping
ministry. Departing Board members, Margene Thompson, Jan Ambler, Rev Constanze
Hagmaier, were thanked. New Board Members were welcomed: Christina Nath (Mitchell),
Lucy Parker (Webster), Rev Dave Wildermuth (Yankton), Colleen Tucker (Madison) and
Kayla Koterwski (Tea).
The meeting was adjourned by exclaiming “I LOve camp!” at 10:18 AM and closed with a
prayer by Rev Layne Nelson.
