PREP PREVIEW 2013 The Courier T2 COV ER STORY THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 MATTHIAS LEGUIRE / for the Courier LEFT TO RIGHT, Emily Clymer, Rachel Myers, Amber Gerdeman, Courtney Cramer, Katie Simon, Haley Gerten, Molly Glick, Dani Heaster and Megan Maag, are returning all-BVC selections, and are among area girls basketball’s best and brightest stars. Area girls basketball players ready to shine in new season By DAVE HANNEMAN STAFF WRITER Little Lindy Ward has this to say about Justin Bieber ... “Ugh.” ... dolls ... “Ugh.” ... and the impression that little girls should be all sugar and spice and everything nice ... “Are you kidding me?” Out on the court, Arcadia was going through another practice in preparation for the upcoming season. Ward was performing her role as team manager, making sure the players had ice, towels and inspiration when needed. In between, Ward was shooting a ball at an imaginary basket on the wall of the gym, accurately hitting the same spot almost every time. She worked on her ball handling skills — right hand, left hand, between the legs, behind the back. When time and space allowed she dribbled the length of floor, switched hands and dribbled back. “In my last game,” she says proudly, “I had 20 rebounds.” Lindy Ward is in the fifth grade. What is that? Age 10? Welcome to girls basketball, 2013, past, present and future. Quick history lesson: There are Ohio high schools who can trace a girls basketball program back to the early 1900s. In 1937, a questionnaire sent out by the Ohio High School Athletic Association showed that 563 (55 percent) of Ohio’s schools offered either intramural or interscholastic girls basketball. There were factions, however, that considered the sport “unladylike” and potentially dangerous to the players. A majority of the schools actually favored dropping the activity. In 1940 an OHSAA referendum, overwhelmingly approved, led to not only basketball, but all interscholastic girls sports being discontinued. Schools would eventually again offer girls sports, usually under the auspices of the Girls Athletic Association (GAA). But it wasn’t until 1976 that the OHSAA sanctioned a girls basketball state tournament. In the 37 years since, 15 area schools have made a combined See GRABBING, Page T19 THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 COV ER STORY EMILY CLYMER COURTNEY CRAMER AMBER GERDEMAN SCHOOL: McComb NICKNAME: Em SPORTS: Volleyball, basketball, track PARENTS: Ben & Linda Clymer FAVORITE TEACHER: Mr. Myers SUPERSTITIONS: Wear the same pair of socks for every game. The Redskins suffered through a difficult season last year as Arcadia posted a 2-21 overall record that included an 0-9 record in the Blanchard Valley Conference in coach Cara Noel’s first season as head coach. Noel is one of two female head boys basketball coaches in the state. The other is Akron North’s Stacie Horton-Carter. The team’s top scorer from a season ago, Casey Mock, graduated along with two other seniors in Seth Bauer and Kevin Keefe Jr. Mock was a third-team allBVC selection after averaging a team-best 13.9 points with 2.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game. There is some size and experience back at Arcadia this season. Sophomore Shae Watkins and junior Hayden Ramsey return after earning a spot on the all-BVC honorable mention list. Watkins, a 6-foot-5 post player, netted 9.8 points and grabbed 5.5 rebounds per game. Ramsey, a 5-11 Noel Ramsey Watkins guard, netted 8.1 points and collected 3.9 rebounds per game. The Redskins will have another experienced big man on the court in sophomore Chad Baker (6-5). Baker returns after scoring 4.9 points and grabbing 2.6 rebounds per game. Junior guard Dylan Conine (5-11) is also a returning letterwinner. Noel also expects a contribution from 6-1 junior Josh Ireland. REDSKINS | GIRLS Redskins set to defend BVC championship ARCADIA — Losing a player the caliber of Miranda Palmer might be cause for lowering the bar of expectations, but not so at Arcadia. Despite losing Palmer, who averaged 21 points per game at point guard and was named last season’s Blanchard Valley Conference player of the year before moving on to Huntington University, Arcadia has high hopes this season. And why not? The Redskins have a long history of winning under Randy Baker, who has compiled a record of 442-228 since taking over as head coach at Arcadia in 1983. Talented duo Courtney Cramer and Molly Glick, both second-team, all-BVC selections last year, are back. A 5-foot-6 guard/forward, Cramer averaged 11.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game for last year’s Arcadia team that finished 23-4 and won the BVC title to help Baker earn conference coach of the year honors. A 5-11 junior, Glick led the Redskins last year with 7.7 rebounds per game. She also scored 11.5 points GOOD LUCK ALL AREA TEAMS! 2017 Tiffin Ave. • Findlay 419-423-0713 www.act-1staffingfindlay.com Good Luck Area Teams! 717 N. Baker also is looking for contributions from Rebecca Kirian, a 5-7 senior, who accounted for 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 points per game. Junior letterwinners Maddie Mock (5-6) and Abbie Dauterman (5-11), who combined to average 3.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, are also back. Other players expected to play key roles for the Redskins include seniors Julia Pina (5-5) and Hannah Ball (5-7) and junior Lizzie Coward (5-7). A R LINGTON THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 RED DEVILS | BOYS Red Devils are loaded for run at BVC crown ARLINGTON — In the past two seasons under head coach Jason Vermillion, Arlington has won a combined 41 games, including a dream season two years ago in which the Red Devils advanced all the way to the Division IV state semifinals. Arlington appears to be loaded again this year as Vermillion (231-104 in 13 seasons at the school) will look to four returning letterwinners to keep Arlington’s winning tradition rolling. Only one player who saw significant playing time, Blaiz McBride, is gone from last year’s team that went 18-6 and 7-2 in Blanchard Valley Conference play. McBride was one of the BVC’s top 3-point shooters. He hit 34.1 percent from beyond the arc while dishing out 2.0 assists per game. The Red Devils should be solid inside with the return of Michael Blunk, a 6-foot-3 senior forward, who averaged 14 points and almost nine rebounds a game last year while earning all-BVC second-team honors. Guard Andrew Hunter (5-10), third team all-conference last season, averaged 12.6 points, 2.5 rebounds and five assists per contest last season. Vermillion Blunk Hunter Jordan Freed, who was an honorable mention selection, added almost nine points and three rebounds per game. Blake Courtney, a 6-4 center, is also back and will give the Red Devils an added presence in the paint. A host of prospects also will compete for playing time this year, including senior guards Jared Green (5-9) and Ryan McDowell (5-10), junior center Logan Grieser (6-2) and guard Aaron Starr (6-0), and sophomores Ridge Babb (5-11) and Matt Glick (6-0). RED DEVILS | GIRLS Heaster headlines Arlington’s returnees ARLINGTON – Last year was a season of transition for Arlington’s girls basketball program. And as transitions go, it was a pretty successful year. The Red Devils lost several talented seniors from a team that won the 2012 Division IV state championship. They hardly missed a beat in 2013 as coach Seth Newlove’s Red Devils finished 16-8 overall and 6-3 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Four players return for the Red Devils this season as they try and return to the top of the rugged BVC. Dani Heaster, one of the key members of the 2012 championship club, is back for her senior year. A second-team all-BVC selection last year, the 5-foot-7 forward scored 10.3 points with 6.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. Senior Madi Mains (5-9) and Hannah Johnson (5-5) return with experience at guard. Mains tossed in 5.7 points with 2.6 rebounds per game while Johnson added 4.0 points with 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists. Haley Dillon is back at the post after earning significant playing time as a freshman. The tallest girl Newlove Heaster on the roster at 5-11, Dillon tossed in 5.8 points with 3.5 rebounds per game. Look for six other players to be contributors for Arlington. Seniors Arden McMath (5-5) and Kenna Schmehl (5-3) will see playing time at guard as will sophomore Megan Johnson (5-7) and freshman Whitney Dodds (5-6). Sophomore Lauren Alexander (5-11) will line up at wing and freshman Sierra Nichols (5-10) can play post. GO BIG RED! Angela B. Bateson, DDS General Dentistry 419-425-0303 New Patients Welcome 1400 S. More importantly, the Hornets played better in the Blanchard Valley Conference finishing with a 4-5 mark, compared to a 2-7 clip in 2011-12. Three lettermen return for the Hornets including a pair who earned all-conference honors last season. Grant Risner (6-foot-2), a third team all-BVC, honorable mention and AP All Northwest Ohio player from a season ago, along with 6-foot junior Matthew Alspach, who was all-conference honorable mention, are Cory-Rawson’s top returnees. Combined with senior guard/forward Chad Shepler (6-0), the Hornets are a veteran team that will be looking to compete with the big boys in the conference this year. All three lettermen are scorers, with Risner averaging a team-high 13.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game last season. Alspach and Shepler averaged nine and five points Long G. Risner Alspach a game, respectively, last season. The Hornets have three seniors and two juniors as their top prospects. 6-foot-3 power forward Danny Miles can score in the post and junior Spencer Silvers (6-2) is a top rebounder. On the perimeter, Kyle Rossman, a 6-foot guard, provides 3-point shooting for Long’s team. Junior guard Ian Moser (5-10) and senior center Heath Risner (6-3) will compete for starting time in their respective positions. HORNETS | GIRLS Ludwig takes over C-R girls hoops program RAWSON — If the subtractions and additions all add up, Cory-Rawson’s girls basketball team should be improved this season. The Hornets lost two key players to graduation but return four letterwinners who should give them more experience in a number of key positions. Cory-Rawson also has a new coach as Ryan Ludwig takes over the program. Ludwig got back into coaching this season after taking a year off. Previously, he was the boys varsity assistant coach at Kenton. The Hornets did lose their top player from last year’s squad that posted an 8-15 overall record that included a 2-8 mark in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Courtney Dulle graduated after earning a spot on the all-BVC third team as she netted 11.2 points with 3.6 assists per game. The Hornets do have some offensive firepower back. Seniors Kiley Scott and Kendra Tuttle were both honorable mention all-BVC selections. Scott tossed in 11.0 points and Tuttle added 9.0 points per game. Senior forward Courtney Rettig (5-6) and junior post player Kara Galvin (5-9) will also be expected to contribute. H A R DIN NORTHER N THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 POLAR BEARS | BOYS Hershey takes over Hardin Northern’s boys DOLA — It’s a new beginning for the Hardin Northern boys basketball team. Craig Hershey takes the reins of the Polar Bears this season, and four letterwinners return as Hardin Northern looks to improve on its 3-20 record from a season ago. The Polar Bears finished 1-8 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Seniors Jacob Gossard, Rylie Drumm and Kyle Lamb are veterans who Hershey can count on. Drumm (6-foot-1) was an honorable mention allBVC selection last season after averaging 10.3 points per game. He hit 29 3-pointers, averaged a team-high 4.3 rebounds per game and had a team-best 15 blocks. Gossard (5-10) scored 9.8 points per game last year. He nailed 36 three-pointers, tied for fifth-best in the BVC. He averaged a team-high 2.2 assists per game. Lamb (5-10) shot a team-best 67.4 percent from the free-throw line. Sophomore Storm Drumm (6-2) is another returning letterwinner. One key loss to graduation for Hardin Northern Hershey R. Drumm Gossard was Hayden Bradley, an honorable mention all-BVC selection who scored 10.3 points, 2.2 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game last season. The Polar Bears have a mix of veteran and younger players vying for spots in the lineup. Seniors Colton Spearman (6-1), Ethan Flowers (5-9) and Trevor Pritchard (5-10) will be joined by sophomores Blake Obenour (6-1) and Corey Thomson (5-11), and freshmen Bradlee Watts (5-10) and Zac Wilhelm (5-10). POLAR BEARS | GIRLS Hardin Northern looking to move up in BVC DOLA – There’s no place to go but up for Hardin Northern’s girls basketball team in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Coach Brady Mast’s Polar Bears were 2-21 overall and finished last in the BVC at 0-9. Don’t look for Hardin Northern to remain in the conference’s basement, though, as seven experienced players return. In fact, the only player who graduated for the Polar Bears last spring was Chelsey DeLong, who netted 5.6 points per game. While there are plenty of veterans back, the Polar Bears will still be a very young team with just two seniors on the roster. Senior Kylee Hooker (5-foot-4) is back to run the offense at point guard after scoring a team-best 7.8 points per game with 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Hardin Northern is deep at guard. Sophomores Michaela Curtis (5-7), Alaina Roth (5-7) and Morgan Madison (5-8) lettered as guards Mast Hooker Campbell last season and combined for 4.3 points per game. Junior Brooklyn Watts (5-7) also has experience at guard. Junior Brianna Campbell returns at forward after grabbing a team-high 4.7 rebounds per game. Junior Shelby Schlatter (5-7) is back at post. Senior Molly Wilson (5-7) is back out for the sport after taking a year off and will play guard. Junior Kearston Schlatter (5-9) and freshman Holly Wilson (5-9) will provide depth at post. T7 T8 LEIPSIC THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 VIKINGS | BOYS 3 Vikes are back from state runner-up team LEIPSIC — It was a magical year for Leipsic’s boys basketball team in 2012-13. The Vikings finished off a perfect run through the Putnam County League during the regular season and went on a tear in the tournament, reaching the Division IV state title game. Leipsic’s season ended on the court at Ohio State’s Value City Arena when the Vikings fell to a Division I-laden group of all-stars from Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph 87-63 in the finals. Coach Scott Maag has three lettermen back from last year’s ball club that finished with a 25-5 overall record that included 7-0 and 7-2 marks in the PCL and Blanchard Valley Conference, respectively. Those three lettermen will have some big shoes to fill after several standout players were lost to graduation. Devin Mangas graduated after leading Leipsic with 16.9 points per game. Austin Brown (12.6 ppg, 6.5 rebounds per game), Aric Schroeder (5.0 assists per game) and Mitch Kuhlman (5.0 rpg) are also gone. Senior Zach Kuhlman (6-foot-2) is the top returnee for the Vikings. He tossed in 14.2 points per game and Maag Kuhlman Haselman connected on 50 3-point goals, which was third-best in the BVC. Senior Neil Haselman (6-1) also returns at guard while senior Oscar Lopez (6-3) has experience at post. Look for a trio of sophomores to see significant playing time. Jordan Brown (6-3) will play wing, Matt Schroeder (5-10) will play guard and Gavin Cupp (6-5, 270 pounds) will give the Vikings a big body down low at post. VIKINGS | GIRLS Leipsic should vie for crowns in PCL, BVC LEIPSIC — With eight players returning from last year’s 17-9 team, Leipsic might just have a leg up on the competition in the Blanchard Valley Conference and the Putnam County League, both of which tend to be top-heavy with talent. Only two players who won letters a year ago — Kendra Gerten and Aubry Schroeder — are gone from last year’s team, which ended the season with a 52-29 loss to PCL rival Ottoville in the Division IV regional semifinals. Among those returning for the 29th edition of coach Gary Kreinbrink’s Vikings is point guard Rachel Rieman, who has lost most of the past two seasons to an ACL injury. She is joined by 6-1 senior Amber Gerdeman, a first-team all-BVC and all-PCL selection who scored 12.1 points and pulled down 10.7 rebounds per game last season as the Vikings finished 7-2 in the BVC and 4-3 in Putnam County League play. Kelly Nadler, a 6-2 junior, contributed 6.6 points per game, but also added 7.3 rebounds per game and blocked 63 shots. Kreinbrink, who has a 330-285 record as head coach at Leipsic, lists the usual suspects, Liberty-Benton, Arcadia, Pandora-Gilboa, McComb and Arlington, and of course his own Vikings, as contenders for the BVC crown this season. LIBERT Y-BENTON THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 EAGLES | BOYS L-B boys return plenty of veteran players The Liberty-Benton boys basketball team was one of the best teams in the region last year. The Eagles finished with a 22-2 record and a perfect 9-0 in the Blanchard Valley Conference, taking the league title. For veteran coach Steve Williman’s team, the next step is to reach the regional tournament. Last season, the Eagles lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the district semifinals when they dropped a double overtime thriller to to Spencerville. Don’t look for any drop off at L-B this season as six letterwinners return. Seniors Adam Cytlak, (9.8 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.5 apg), John Darnall (10.2 ppg) and Ryan Geise (13.1 ppg) are all back for the Eagles. Cytlak (6-foot-3) was second-team all-conference and northwest Ohio honorable mention. Darnall was third-team all-conference and Geise was first-team all-BVC, first team northwest Ohio and second team all-Ohio. Zach Garver, a 6-1 senior three-sport standout averaged 9.0 points a game and 3.0 rebounds per game. Williman Geise Cytlak Senior Brandon May (6-3) is also back. Both players were honorable mention all-BVC last season. Junior B.J. Lawson also lettered last season as a point guard. Look for senior Mitch Haan (6-0) and sophomore Alec Rhodes (6-0) to push for playing time at the wing spot. Junior Brad Steinman (6-3) and sophomore Nathan Craft (6-5) are candidates for action at post. The Eagles open the season at Rossford on Friday, Nov. 29. EAGLES | GIRLS Expectations high again for L-B girls team Expectations can run pretty high for a team that returns all five starters from a unit that finished 20-6, and Liberty-Benton is no exception. The Eagles return eight players, including their top six who combined to average nearly 50 points per game last season. But the excitement of the new season was tempered a bit in the preseason when the team’s top scorer, junior Katie Simon, was lost with a knee injury. A first-team all-BVC selection as a sophomore, Simon averaged 17.5 points and nearly eight rebounds per game a year ago. The Eagles still return a solid nucleus of players that has their sights set on dethroning reigning Blanchard Valley Conference champion Arcadia and advancing a bit farther into the playoffs than last year’s squad that lost to Archbold in the regional semifinals. Rachel Myers (5-foot-8) appears to be the go-to player for coach Nate Irwin, who has compiled a record of 163-47 in nine seasons as head coach at the school. Myers, a senior first-team all-BVC selection last year, netted almost 16 points per game, including 44 Go ! s e l g Ea 300 Walnut St., Findlay 419-423-8771 LaugersCarpetOne.com Irwin Myers Reynolds 3-pointers, and four rebounds per contest. Senior guard Carrie Reynolds (5-7) and junior center Lauren Kotey (6-2) added five points per game for the Eagles while earning all-BVC honorable mention accolades. Also expected to contribute this year are sophomore guard Nicolette Devincentis (3 ppg) and senior guard Kayla Trevino (2 ppg), Freshman guard Jensen Hiegel also is expected to compete for playing time this year. Falling just short of a third straight appearance in the district tournament after a sectional tourney loss to Columbus Grove, the Panthers are looking for a deeper postseason run this season. The Panthers will also be looking to contend for the Blanchard Valley Conference title again this season with four returning letterwinners back from last year’s ballclub that recorded a 14-10 overall mark that included a 7-2 record in the BVC. There are a few holes to fill in the lineup because of graduation. Roth said goodbye last year to a trio of talented players in Dalton Buck, Jerry Brown and Cody Wilson. Buck was a first team all-BVC selection after tossing in 13.7 points per game. Brown and Wilson made the all-BVC second team and honorable mention list respectively. Third team all-BVC player Clay Grubb will be back for his junior year to lead the team. Roth Grubb Dysert The 6-foot-3 football standout averaged 10.9 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game from the forward spot. Seniors Taylor Reardon (5.2 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.5 apg) and Clay Dysert (2.8 ppg) will give the Panthers points and much needed leadership. Sophomore Chas Shoop (6-1) will also likely slide into a starting role. Senior Travis Clark (6-1) and juniors Trey Hanes (5-11), Blake Glaser (6-2), Jacob Beeson (5-6) and Andrew Adams (5-11) will also see playing time. PANTHERS | GIRLS McComb girls looking to build on success McCOMB — Seniors Brenna Dee and Emily Clymer will carry the load for McComb’s girls basketball team this season. The duo are the only two returning letterwinners from last year’s squad that posted a 17-8 overall record that included a 6-3 mark in the rugged Blanchard Valley Conference. Coach Jeremy Herr, who has a 60-53 record entering his sixth season as head coach, will have to find replacements for four solid athletes lost to graduation. Briana Herr, Kristen Buck, Caelie Reed and Allison Beverly picked up their diplomas last June. Herr was an honorable mention all-BVC selection as she hit 58.9 percent of her shots from the floor. Jenna Huffman, who averaged 10.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last season, decided not to play basketball this year. Dee and Clymer were the heart of last year’s successful season and give Herr a good nucleus to build around. Dee, a senior guard, averaged 8.7 points per game. PA NDOR A-GILBOA THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 ROCKETS | BOYS P-G boys have new coach, plenty of size PANDORA — Pandora-Gilboa’s boys basketball team has a new coach. Logan Smith takes over the program at the school this season after Josh Klear stepped down at the end of last season. He’ll have some size and experience to work with this year after the Rockets were just 4-19 overall, 2-7 in the Blanchard Valley Conference and 0-7 in the Putnam County League. Pandora-Gilboa lost a trio of players to graduation. Tyler Maag and Jarod Triplehorn, who was among the BVC leaders in three-point goals (27) and free throw percentage (.679) last season, have both departed. Also gone is honorable mention all-BVC selection Abe Basinger, who was a .737 free throw shooter and dished out 3.0 assists per game. The Rockets will be bolstered by the return of six senior players. Pandora-Gilboa will also be about as big as anyone on its schedule. Senior guard Seth Schmenk (6-foot-2) headlines the list of returning players after netting 10.0 points per game and earning a spot on the all-BVC honorable Smith Schmenk Schneck mention team. Senior Brian Schneck (6-0) is also back with experience at guard. He hit 20 3-pointers as a junior. Senior guards Dustin Rieman (6-0) and Jacob Wauters (5-10) also saw varsity action last year. Jared Tousley, a 6-5 senior, is back at the center spot after grabbing 4.1 rebounds per game. Senior Alex Osborn (6-3) and junior Colin Fenstermaker (6-5) are forwards and sophomore Cole Alexander (6-3) will play center. ROCKETS | GIRLS Maag headlines list of P-G girls returnees PANDORA — With five returning letterwinners, Pandora-Gilboa’s girls basketball team appears to be ready to make a run at championships in both the Blanchard Valley Conference and Putnam County League. Head coach Jessica Liedtke lost just two players from last year’s unit that went 15-7 overall, 6-3 in the BVC and 5-2 in the PCL. The two players who graduated for the Rockets, Ashley Williams and Keri Conine, were each honorable mention all-conference selections last year. Megan Maag headlines the list of Rocket returnees. A senior forward, Maag was a second-team all-BVC selection last season as she tossed in 14.5 points with 6.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. Senior Vanessa McCullough also returns for the Rockets. She was a third-team all-conference pick after netting 4.2 points with 3.0 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game at guard. Three other players are also back for PandoraGilboa. Senior guard Hunter Hermiller averaged 7.0 points Liedtke M. Maag with 2.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds per game. Ashley Alt, a senior post player, and Olivia Maag, a senior guard, combined to score 5.0 points with 2.8 rebounds per contest for the Rockets. Both will be counted upon to provide more scoring for Pandora-Gilboa this season. Juniors Shea Watkins and Breana Hovest and sophomore Mackenzie Swary will see playing time at the guard spot while senior Anna Abelovska will add to the team’s depth at the forward position. Third-year coach Marc Bishop has six letterwinners back. Unfortunately, two of those players suffered serious injuries during the football season. Junior Ross Adolph, an honorable mention all-BVC selection, who grabbed 7.1 rebounds and scored 7.1 points per game will miss the entire season while recovering from a knee injury. Classmate Draeton Fasone, who tossed in 7.8 points per game, won’t be available until late December after suffering a broken arm during the football season. In addition, the Black Knights lost a trio of players to graduation from last year’s team that posted a 4-19 record and a 3-6 mark in the Blanchard Valley Conference. The toughest to replace will be Ryan Adolph (11.9 points, 2.5 assists per game), who was honorable mention all-BVC. Brennon Swain and Matt DeVore also picked up their diplomas. Bishop Junge Williams The return of senior guard Sawyer Junge to the program will certainly be a boost. Junge didn’t play last season but tossed in 11.1 points per game as a sophomore. Senior Daniel Roberts (3.5 ppg) and Adam Endicott (4.8 ppg) lettered last season at the guard spot. Senior Mac Williams (4.9 ppg) is back at center. Bishop is also expecting contributions this season from sophomore Marcus Brand and freshman Braxton Fasone. BLACK KNIGHTS | GIRLS Black Knights looking to move up in BVC VAN BUREN — Time to step up at Van Buren. Van Buren has been mired in the bottom half of the Blanchard Valley Conference the past couple of years. The Black Knights will be looking to move into the top half of the league standings but veteran coach Mike Daniels, who is entering his fifth season in charge of the program, knows it’s not an easy task. The Black Knights head into the 2013-14 campaign without their two best players as BVC honorable mention selections Kristen Tropf and Kaleigh Frampton both graduated. Frampton will be particularly tough to replace as she was among the conference leaders in scoring (11.5 points per game) and rebounding (7.7 rpg). Five players return for the Black Knights, although sophomore guard Taylor Gilliland has been lost to injuries. There are some excellent athletes among the four returnees. Madi Endicott, a 5-foot-8 senior, is back with experience at post while classmate Paige Sudlow (5-6) also lettered last season primarily as a post player. Go Black Knights! Kylie Sturgill, the tallest player on the roster at 5-11, will see action at post along with MacKenzie Edler (5-7). Bri Lasley (5-7) and Lexi Hassan (5-4) will play at the guard spot. VA NLUE THE COURIER FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2013 T13 WILDCATS | BOYS A new era about to begin for Vanlue boys VANLUE — One of the most successful classes in Vanlue boys basketball history is gone. Six seniors graduated from last year’s team that ended up 18-7 overall and 5-4 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. The seniors were also key players for the 2012 and 2011 teams that posted regular season records of 17-3 and 18-2 respectively. The biggest loss, literally, is 6-foot-10 standout Zach Garber. He was Ohio’s co-Division IV Player of the Year last season after averaging 23 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. He’s taken his talents north and is now a member of the University of Toledo basketball team. Starters Josh Clymer, Linden Smith and Dylan Watson also graduated along with backups Joe Wagner and Lee Summers. Second-year coach Dean Birchmeier will be looking for a number of players to step up and fill some of those. There are a pair of returnees in senior Nick Hagerty and junior Austin Smith. Birchmeier Hagerty Smith Hagerty, a 6-1 guard, netted 5.8 points with 1.6 assists per game while grabbing 19 steals. Smith, a 5-9 guard, had similar numbers. He popped in 5.8 points with 1.7 assists per game and also grabbed 19 steals. Four other seniors will see significant playing time. Jacob Coldiron (6-3) will see action at post along with Tim Reed (5-10), who will give the Wildcats strong play off the bench. Colton Huston (6-0), an excellent athlete with good quickness, will line up at wing. Devin Hendricks (5-5) will provide depth at guard. WILDCATS | GIRLS Wildcats are trying to replace five seniors VANLUE — Vanlue’s girls basketball team has won a combined nine games the past two seasons. With four returning lettermen, Vanlue head coach Todd Richards would like to see his Wildcats equal that two-year win total this season. Richards will have to find replacements for the five seniors lost to graduation. Three of those seniors were starters on last year’s team that posted a 5-17 overall record and 1-8 in the Blanchard Valley Conference. Juniors Haley Bonham and Kate Clymer are the Wildcats’ two returning starters. Bonham, a 5-foot-9 guard, tossed in 6.6 points and grabbed 6.0 rebounds per game. Clymer scored 5.0 points and collected 5.0 rebounds per contest as a sophomore. Richards will be counting on his junior duo to replace graduates Logan Frey and Katie Thomas, honorable mention all-BVC selections, who were the team’s top offensive players. Senior guard Heather Gerschutz (5-3) and sophomore forward Jackie Kloepfer (5-9) are the other two returning lettermen for the Wildcats. M-Tek, Inc. 1111 N. Freshman Grace Wagner (5-4), junior Chelsi Hartman (5-3) and freshman Beth Roof (6-1) round out the varsity roster for the Wildcats.
