Black History in St. Augustine: 450* Years of the
African-American Experience By: Dalia Colon

The year 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, an anniversary that is
recognized and commemorated nationally and internationally. It is the second year of
the three-year St. Augustine 450th Commemoration. Journey: 450 Years of the AfricanAmerican Experience, a signature exhibition at the Visitor Information Center,
showcases the important role African-Americans played in the historical and cultural
development of America. The birth of the African-American experience took place in St.
Augustine. The first freed Black settlement was established here; the Emancipation
Proclamation was read here; on the very streets that were laid down in 1573 by the
Spanish Crown marched Civil Rights activists – nearly four centuries later – calling for
the fundamental rights our country emanates. (* 50 years earlier in Florida: 500 yrs.)

The American Beach Cookbook
Marsha Dean Phelts
University Press of Florida, 2008 - Cooking - 284 pages
From its founding in 1935 to the present, trips to American Beach have meant good times, good friends,
and great food. Located on Amelia Island in northeast Florida and established by the Pension Bureau of
the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, American Beach today is listed on the National Register of
Historic Places. It remains a beloved vacation destination as well as a year-round home for many African
Americans. For The American Beach Cookbook, Marsha Dean Phelts has collected nearly 300 recipes
passed down through generations. Over the years, many influences have found their way into the dishes
and are represented here by everything from pig's feet to sweet potato pone and from smothered shrimp
to bourbon slushes. Mouths will water at such treats as fried cheese grits, she-crab soup, seafood
casserole, crab coated shrimp chops, cornbread dumplings, chicken curry, corn relish, pickled peaches,
Big Mama's fruitcake, and much more. In addition to the recipes, readers will enjoy compelling vignettes
that illustrate the heritage of people and potables, vintage photographs, and area maps that together tell
one of the great stories of a unique community.

Hi Joe and Isatu, I hope all is well, from Griffin Lotson from USA.
see below I did get a email from Amadu, I did see and talk with Wilson
Moran on Saturday and he said he did talk with you about my trip with you
and others. OK we are putting together a team to help with the house for
Mama Bendu, the house first and then she want a trip to the USA, in that
order. We will be putting together a conference call soon, we hope to do the
call anytime from April 27 to May 11 2012, we hope you can be in on the
call, we are looking for 10 to 20 persons to be on the call. Herb Frazier
have a good Idea and he has agreed to be on the conference call when we set
it up. The purpose of the conference call will be to address building a
house and possible trip to America for mama Bendu. Time frame to do this
2012 to December 2013 that gives us over eighteen months to complete the
project. In talking with her (Mama Bendu) this is what she wants and I hope
we can do this over time. Thanks Griffin Lotson, National Board member of
the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission and City
Councilman of Darien, Georgia. Thanks to you Joe, Isatu and Wilson for all
you have done for many years for Bendu Jabati, her family and for the
Gullah Geechee Cultural. May God Bless you. We will talk later. Thanks
Griffin!!
