It’s about a boy who was brought to the North Pole and raised by a Papa Elf, not realizing that he is a human. He goes off to find his dad in New York and his innocent antics make the movie memorable and worth watching every year. Dr. Suess’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas- This animated movie has been a very popular Christmas film for years and is entertaining for all ages. It includes Cindy Lou Hoo and everyone else from Whoville. Also, you can always sing along to “You’re a Mean One, Mr.Grinch” while you are watching it. 3 A Charlie Brown Christmas- This animated movie is only around 25 minutes and has been around for 45 years, but it never gets old. It will always be a favorite because it teaches you a lesson and gets you excited about the holidays. Charlie and Lucy make us look past the materialism of the holiday season and remind us what Christmas is all about. 4 It’s A Wonderful Life- This classic captures the essence of the Christmas season and makes us think about the importance of our lives. It shows a businessman what his life would be like if he was never born and teaches an important lesson, so everybody should watch it at least once. 5 Home Alone- All of the Home Alone movies are constantly played in the holiday season, but the first one is great because it is about a boy who has to deal with two robbers when he is left behind while his family is on a Christmas vacation. Arts & Entertainment Golden Arrow December 8, 2011 7 Theatre brings 'Sleepy Hollow' to life Strong acting and moments of humor help make the play a great success, despite some confusing plot points by Adam Santa Cruz and Alexa Mansese Back Page & Front Page Editors S tudents and parents crowded the theater for the Nov. 17 premiere of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The dimly-lit room filled up quickly in anticipation for the adaptation of the old legend known for its eerie vibe. The play opened with a narration from senior Brianna Silva, whose soothing storytelling ability started the show off on a good note and kept the audience on the edge of their seats. They stayed on the edge of their seats, as the next scene was an exciting battle, complete with professionally choreographed fighting, which set the backstory for the headless horseman. However, the main story follows Mr. Ichabod Crane (junior Daniel Shertzer), the new schoolteacher in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Crane meets the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel (senior Jacqueline Vasquez), and immediately falls in love with her. Even though the feelings are mutual, he has to compete for her love with the brutish Brom Bones, comically portrayed by sophomore Jake Duke. Although the acting was superb and way beyond what can be expected in a By Alexa Manese high school drama, the plotline was a little hard to follow. The transitions of the story were confusing and the overall plot was quite foggy. Nonetheless, the acting job of such young recruits matched up to that of a professional. The play’s surprisingly humorous scenes lightened the mood a bit; one actor that stood out was freshman Shawn Saldaña, whose portrayal of the Young Knickerbocker kept the audience in stitches. Several seniors were involved in this play, and their fine performances left a memorable impression on the senior class. Vasquez, Mani Maleky, Elizabeth McIntosh, Duncan Boyer and Hope Dorman were spectacular in their roles as Katrina Van Tassel, Mr. Van Ripper, Mrs. Van Tassel, Mr. Van Tassel and Mrs. Vedder respectively. “This was actually my first play and getting a fairly big role was really exciting and such a new experience for me,” Maleky said. “I got a whole new perspective on acting and drama in general.” Along with the acting, the show’s props and decorations created a realistic, creepy feel that fit the story perfectly. Fog rose up in appropriate scenes and the fake cemetery looked as spooky as real cemeteries do. Theater tech did a wonderful job in creating the horseman’s ride, a prosthetic horse on which the horseman was actually able to sit and ride on for a brief scene. “I feel like it went really well. It's a relief because the first show of the year can help create momentum for the next two shows, and I feel that our success will help get the student body and community excited for the musical and spring play,” Dorman said.
