All of us that are residents of Michigan are
part of a new environment, significantly
impacted by changes in the auto industry,
home values and the credit market. This
changing economy has affected all of us.
We are all learning to get by with less.
Our schools continue to play an important
role through this change. We are ready to
support our students, families, and the
community. Now, more than ever, education
is vital to the success of our students, our
neighborhoods, and our state. We continue
to put the needs of children and their
education first, even as needs are increasing
and our resources are decreasing.
On the first day of school, we will open our
doors with enthusiasm and dedication.
We look forward to the sun shining, the
excitement of a new beginning, and the
comfort provided by the knowledge that there
is a portion of our lives we can all count on.
Certainly, our schools have changed, as
have many things in Michigan. We do not
have the same resources we once had to
provide services to students, and change is
difficult. I can assure you, however, that
our schools will remain a foundation in
this community and a place where many
wonderful things happen. Our students
continue to perform well on every measure
and will continue to succeed.

lower elementary schools. Inflatable picnics and party games are being

LPS Foundation Special Announcement
The LPS Foundation will continue the Competitive Edge College Savings
Program for all kindergarten students this fall. More information will
come to you directly from your child’s school. Please visit our Web site

The Middle School Alternative Classrooms for the
Academically Talented (MACAT) program is the
LPS middle school program designed for students
of high ability and achievement in all academic
areas. The process for entering MACAT begins in
January when all sixth grade students attending
LPS schools participate in standardized testing.
Based on the results of these tests, letters are sent to
parents to inform them of the opportunity to have
their child considered for MACAT. A selection
committee comprised of teachers and administrators then meets to select the MACAT students for
the following fall.
MACAT is open to students who are not currently attending LPS schools but who live in the
LPS district. MACAT applications for fall 2011 are
available by contacting Douglas Coates, MACAT
and Facilitator, at 734-744-2650 Ext. 46132, or via
email at [email protected]. Due
to the standardized testing required for admission consideration, applications for fall 2011 from
non-LPS students must be submitted by Friday,
January 7, 2011. Non-LPS students who apply will
take the same standardized tests taken by LPS
students, and those who qualify will be added to
the list of students being considered for admission
to MACAT.
MSC (housed at Churchill High School):
The Math/Science/Computer (MSC) program is
designed for students who have high ability and
interest in the areas of math and science.
Eighth grade students who will have completed Algebra 1 by June 2011 are eligible to apply for MSC
for 9th grade. MSC students must become full-time
Churchill students. Currently, transportation to
CHS for MSC students is provided by the school
district from the student’s home high school (FHS
or SHS). LPS students and parents are notified of
the opportunity to apply to the MSC program in
late October. Testing for the program for fall 2011
will occur on December 11, 2010. MSC is open
only to students who live in the LPS District.
Parents living in the LPS district whose 8th grade
children are not currently enrolled in an LPS school
and who would like more information about the
MSC program and the application process should
contact Douglas Coates, MSC Facilitator, at

livoniapublicschools.org. Because of the testing that
needs to be completed for admission consideration,
non-LPS students must request an application for

AHERA Update 2010
The Livonia Public Schools, as required by the Asbestos Hazard
Emergency Response Act (AHERA) conducts ongoing surveillance
and re-inspection programs for asbestos. Livonia Public Schools
has an ongoing operations and maintenance program to address
the asbestos in the buildings owned and operated by the

Budget Reductions Bring Transportation Changes for 2010-2011
Busing Preserved through Reduction in Bus Routes
Changes in the district’s transportation service are coming
for the 2010-2011 school year. A 30% reduction in the
number of bus routes is one of the difficult budget
decisions that will be implemented next year. Other
surrounding school districts are also reducing or eliminating busing as a result of the state-funding crisis.
The Livonia Public Schools Board of Education and
administration have discussed a variety of options to
reduce the transportation budget, such as eliminating
high school transportation. Feedback from parents
guided the decision to maintain elementary, middle
school and high school transportation for the 2010-2011
school year and find the cost savings through a reduction
in services as listed below.
In order to preserve transportation service for students,
and to meet the district’s cost-cutting targets, the transportation department will implement the following
changes:
• There will be a significant reduction in stops, and students
will be expected to walk farther to their bus stops.
• An increased number of students will be assigned to
each stop and on each bus.
• The use of main-road and depot-type stops (parks
and schools, etc) for pick-up and drop-off will be
increased.
• In limited circumstances, students may be expected
to walk short distances along roads without sidewalks
to the next adjacent corner or bus stop.
• Mid-day transportation for general education
kindergarten students has been eliminated. Children
will ride the bus to school (a.m.) or ride home from
school (p.m.); depending on which half-day session
they attend. Parents or guardians will be responsible
for transportation home from a.m. kindergarten or
transportation to school for p.m. kindergarten.
Safety and efficiency continue to be the guiding criteria
for the development of transportation routes and stops.
Information on Student Bus Stops and Passes
This year, the transportation department asked parents
to register their students to get a more accurate count
of the number of students who are planning to ride the
bus. Bus pass letters will be mailed by August 27, 2010
to all students who registered for transportation. The
letter will contain the student’s bus pass information
and detailed information concerning transportation.
Families who have a newly registered student or families
who did not register their student for transportation in
the spring should call the transportation department at
734-744-2517, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. –
4:30 p.m., to receive their bus letter.
The transportation department is asking all families to
use the stop assignments in the bus letters. The required
budget reductions will make it difficult to add or
change bus stops. Families continue to have the option
of transporting their children to and from school or
finding alternative transportation.

The transportation hotline will operate from August 25
through September 10, 2010 between the hours of 10:00 a.m.
and 2:00 p.m. The hotline number is 734-744-2500 ext.
42184 and 42185. Inquiries can also be made through the
district Web site at [email protected].
The hotline operators are available to answer general
transportation questions and to assign bus stops to
newly registered students but are unable to add or
change stops.

Each eligible student who has registered for transportation
receives one stop on one bus both morning and afternoon.
Multiple-day, multiple-stop busing is not provided.
However, alternative bus stops are available for special
custody and daycare purposes under very specific
conditions. Families should read their bus letter for the
criteria for alternative bus stops.
The transportation department appreciates the support
of all families as these changes are implemented.

History. Diegel teaches because
she believes our young generation

history come alive. She describes
herself as a devoted visionary who
is committed to ensuring her students understand how
their thoughts, beliefs and actions make a profound
impact on our country and history.
Livonia Public Schools is Moving to
“Zangle ParentConnection”
Livonia Public Schools is dedicated to communicating
with parents and guardians regarding each child’s
progress in school. Beginning with the start of the
2010-11 school year, Livonia Public Schools is
changing our Parent Internet Viewer to Zangle
ParentConnection! This integrated system, with
student records, gradebook, attendance, food service,
transportation and assessment information, will
provide more information to parents of all K-12
students attending Livonia Public Schools. You
will receive information at the start of the school
year on how to access your child’s account.
New Attendance Process for 2010-11
One of the changes occurring at our schools this year
is the use of TeleParent, which is an automated call
system for students who are absent from school.
Beginning with the 2010-11 school year, parents
will not be asked to call the school to report an
absence—they will call only in the event of serious
illness or in cases of communicable diseases. In
order to ensure safety and to confirm that a child
is absent with parent knowledge, an automated
system will make calls on the day of the absence.
Additional information will be sent to parents
via E-News and school newsletters regarding the
attendance policies and procedures for both
elementary and secondary students.
