The Tribune is pleased to offer you
our third installment of the Book of
Lists. We’re also delighted to announce our second annual Top 20 under 40 Award winners. Competition
was stiff again this year, with more
than 80 excellent entries, underscoring
the breadth of talented young people
in our county.
The Tribune’s 2007 Book of Lists is
a compilation of nearly a year’s worth
of our 2006 lists of the county’s leading companies, services and community organizations. We began publishing these weekly lists nearly three
years ago, when we launched our Sunday Business section.
A valuable resource for readers and
local companies, the lists reflect hours
of research conducted by news assistants who search Internet sites, check
business listings, the phone book and
business owners in a variety of industries. Any errors published in the original lists that were brought to our atten-
tion have been corrected in this book.
We developed our ranking criteria
for companies and organizations based
on input from industry experts.
Finally, we are excited to honor 20
of the county’s young leaders as part
of our influential Top
20 under 40 competition. A panel of six
judges from the Economic Vitality Corp.

Wine grapes as a group continue to stay strong as the top-valued crop in San Luis Obispo County agriculture. In 2005, the bumper harvest meant a 47 percent boost in value over

These talented young business and community leaders
are making a difference in San Luis Obispo County
W
ith its high quality of life, top-notch educational institutions and healthy economy,
it’s not surprising that San Luis Obispo County is home to so many talented
young leaders.
For the second time, The Tribune is pleased to honor 20 such leaders through
our prestigious Top 20 under 40 Award. This year, the competition was again tough with
more than 80 nominations received online in late October and early November at
www.sanluisobispo.com. The candidates for this annual competition were diverse and
represented a variety of industries and occupations, including healthcare, finance, law, education, business, technology, local government and nonprofits.

Web Associates. The
Pismo Group, which
includes three fulltime and three parttime employees, is “not
just about creating a
nice-looking
website,” said
Boyer, “… it’s
about helping
companies
do better
business.”
Boyer
said he
founded
the
company
when he
found himself getting farther and farther
away “from actually helping people.” At the
Pismo Group, he said, he’s involved with
each client.
“Creating solutions for opportunities is
really what I love to do.”
Boyer moved six years ago to the Central
Coast from
Portland, Ore.,
where he had
started a small
advertising
company after
attending the
University of
Oregon and
Portland State
University.
Outside of work, Boyer belongs to the
Rotary Club of Pismo Beach/Five Cities
and is also a member of the Grover Beach
Chamber of Commerce and the Endowment
Committee for the Clark Center Foundation.
He also supports Court-Appointed Special
Advocates for Children of San Luis Obispo
County and helps deliver food and presents at
Christmas to families through the Economic
Opportunity Commission.

LISA SOLOMON CHITTY
Captain, Paso Robles Police Department
Lisa Solomon Chitty, 38, became captain of
the Paso Robles Police Department in 2005. As
captain, she is second-in-command of the
agency under Chief Dennis Cassidy. She was
the youngest officer — and first woman —
hired by the department when she started 18
years ago. Chitty, who is known professionally
as Lisa Solomon, graduated last year from the
California Peace Officers Standards Training
Law Enforcement Command College — what
Cassidy said is the equivalent of a master’s
degree program.
She is a past president of the North County
Women’s Shelter Board of Directors and
remains a member of that board. She has also
served as the chair of the San Luis Obispo
County Sexual Assault Recovery and Prevention
Program. Additionally, Chitty helped implement
the DARE program within the Paso Robles
school district, serving as the first full-time
DARE officer with the department.
A 1986 graduate of Arroyo Grande High
School, Chitty said her parents instilled in her
the values of hard work and helping others. “I
really love what I do. It’s really important to go
after your passion.”
Chitty and her husband, Chris, also own and
operate a manufacturing business in Paso
Robles called Sign Sensations. The couple has
two children, Justin, 16, and Bricen, 2.

ANNE C. CYR
Teen Program and Education Coordinator,
Court Appointed Special Advocates of SLO County (CASA)
Attorney, trust and estate litigator, George-Cyr Attorneys LLC
Else Mai Curry, 28, supervises 18 volunteers as the Teen Program and
Education Coordinator for Court Appointed Special Advocates of San Luis
Obispo County. Curry has worked for CASA for nearly five years and in
that time has helped increase the pool of volunteers and improved
communication with child welfare agencies.
She essentially created the coordinator
position she now holds.
“If I were to choose a single area where
Else Mai has changed CASA… for the
better, it would be in our relationships with
other agencies,” said Teresa Tardiff, CASA’s
executive director, who nominated Curry.
Curry is a member of the Community
Partner Advisory Panel to Social
Services and the Independent Living
Program Advisory Board, which
collaborates with Transitions and
Cuesta College to help youth.
Curry’s passion is fueled
by the volunteers who work
with the youths.
“The volunteers give 120
percent. They are so passionate
about their work, which keeps me wanting to do what I do.”
In addition to working full-time at CASA, Curry is a part-time frontdesk manager at Kim & Co. Salon and Day Spa. Through that job, she
helps with the company’s annual “Spa Night,” raising money for
community
charities.

Anne C. Cyr, 37, is a lawyer specializing in estate planning, trust and probate
law. She began practicing law 13 years ago and is a partner in the George-Cyr
law firm. She is a member of the San Luis Obispo
Estate Planning Council. J.K. George, Cyr’s law
partner and one of those nominating her, said
her litigation skills include a “keen, fast mind,
thorough preparation and organization and
genuine compassion for
her clients.”
George noted Cyr
has strived to create a
“team, rather than…
top-down organization”
at their law firm.

work, Cyr is active
with the Rotary Club
of San Luis Obispo
Daybreak, including
serving as a board
member, secretary
and international
services director.
She has also
served on the
board of the

DESCHRYVER
Chief operating officer, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center
Joseph DeSchryver, 36, was appointed
four years ago to be chief operating
officer at Sierra Vista Regional Medical
Center. In that role, DeSchryver has
helped institute accountability measures
resulting in Sierra Vista being
consistently ranked among the leaders
in patient satisfaction compared to
69 other hospitals owned by Tenet.
During his tenure, DeSchryver has
overseen a 5 percent growth in
admissions at Sierra Vista.
“Joe is a staunch supporter of the
hospital’s community outreach and
education programs,” said Ron Yukelson,
who nominated DeSchryver.
His contributions to the community
include serving on the inaugural
committee for the Family Care
Network’s community award and
helping organize and participating in the
2006 American Heart Association Heart
Walk. Last year, he organized a team for
the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation’s Walk for a Cure, raising
more than $11,000. The involvement
with juvenile diabetes research stems
from personal experience. DeSchryver’s
3-year-old son, Kyle, was diagnosed with
diabetes.
“It’s really opened my eyes and given
me a first-hand experience of what folks
go through when someone in their family
has a chronic illness,” he said.
Deschryver and his wife, Laurie, also
have an 18-month-old daughter, Callie.

Academic counselor, Cuesta College
Andrea Devitt, 38, is an academic counselor
at Cuesta College, where one of her primary
goals is to increase the enrollment of local
high school students at Cuesta. She’s
concentrated much of her efforts on
Templeton’s Independent
Studies High School,
resulting in 15 percent of
the students in that
program attending
Cuesta simultaneously.
Those students are
earning high school and
college credit for the
Cuesta classes.
Devitt was recently
elected to the California Community College Counselor
Association’s executive board.
“I feel really lucky to not only live on the Central
Coast,” said Devitt, “but to make a living at a job I really love.”
Devitt earned her undergraduate degree and a teaching credential from
Loyola Marymount University and has graduate degrees from California State
University, Dominguez Hills and Azusa Pacific University.
An active volunteer at her children’s schools, Devitt has a daughter, Kiley, 13,
and a son, Owen, 10. Besides her involvement with the PTA at Los Ranchos
Elementary and Laguna Middle schools, Devitt serves on the Los Ranchos
school site council and the recently-formed San Luis Coastal School District
Wellness Committee. During the last three years, she has helped raise money
through the annual fashion show staged at the Alex Madonna Expo Center,
which benefits the San Luis Obispo Women’s Shelter.

David Elson, 38, owns United Staffing
Associates, an employment agency he
started four years ago that now boasts
seven offices and another satellite
location. The company is
somewhat of a family affair,
with three of his six siblings
and a nephew working on
his management team.
Also working for him are
a number of other close
friends. It’s a sense of family
Elson, a San Luis Obispo
resident, tries to extend to
all of his employees, offering
full benefits, including health
insurance for domestic partners.
His commitment extends to the community, serving on the San Luis
Obispo Community Foundation Advisory Committee and donating time
and money to Cal Poly athletics, the Muscular Dystrophy Association
and the American Cancer Society. He is one of the top financial
contributors to the Central Coast Gay and Lesbian Association and
served as chairman of a home for
AIDS patients in Porterville.
“I’ve always enjoyed giving back
to the community,” Elson said of
his motivation.
Steve English, 25, is a financial advisor with Merrill
Lynch in San Luis Obispo. To say he’s been on a fast-track
is an understatement. He was valedictorian of
Templeton High School’s class of 2000 and
just three years later
graduated with honors
from UC Davis with
an economics degree.
He was hired as a
junior partner with
Morgan Stanley
and at Merrill
Lynch, English
created and leads
a networking
group for young
professionals.
His involvement in the community includes recently taking over
as chairman of the Literacy Council of San Luis Obispo County’s
board of directors. “Without a doubt, he would be the face for a
campaign that promoted integrity, hard work and joy,” said
Bernadette Bernardi, the Literacy Council’s executive director.
English said he is motivated “to be excellent in whatever I do, whether it is business
or how we act in the community.”
He is active with the Templeton Rotary Club, having traveled to Mexico to assist
putting in a town’s water filtering system, and also serves on the board of the San Luis
Obispo Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Committee.

Kathryn M. Eppright, 39, said she
became a lawyer to “help people who
can’t help themselves.” As the
managing principal partner with law
firm Andre, Morris & Buttery,
Eppright has for several years
volunteered assisting women obtain
restraining orders against abusive
spouses. She also works as a pro
bono attorney for California Rural
Legal Assistance. She’s currently
president of the Women Lawyers
Association of San Luis Obispo
County, having served in 2001 as
president of the county Bar
Association.
Eppright earned her law degree
from Fordham University in 1992 and
has been with Andre, Morris &
Buttery for 14 years. “I’m really
grateful that I ended up at a law firm
where community service is valued
and encouraged,” she said.
This year, Eppright will co-chair a
24-member statewide commission
established to increase access to civil
justice for low- and moderate-income
Californians.
Eppright is also an active school
volunteer and has been on the board
of directors of the San Luis Obispo
Children’s Museum. She and her
husband, Chris, have three children,
Maggie, 11, Andy, 8, and Molly, 5.

Julian J. Herrera, 32, began
working nearly two years ago for
CCIS Information Solutions. As
territory manager for the
Bakersfield-based company, Herrera
started working out of a home office
and has grown the company so that it
now has locations in San Luis Obispo
and Paso Robles. He helped CCIS,
which provides credit reports to
businesses and conducts preemployment screening, land its first
two contracts with the state. Herrera,
who moved five years ago to Paso
Robles from Bakersfield, was
honored last month as the CCIS
employee of the year for 2006.
Herrera serves on the San Luis
Obispo County YMCA’s board of
directors. He also is active with St.
Rose Catholic Church, serving as a
children’s religious educator and a
lector and is a volunteer Little League
coach in Paso Robles.
As a boy, said Herrera, he had
what he called a “challenging
upbringing” growing up in a tough
neighborhood in Bakersfield and
credits the outreach of community
members and business leaders for
helping him succeed as a youth.
Those memories now provide his
motivation.

TOM JONES
Governmental and public relations manager, Pacific Gas and Electric
Tom Jones, 36, started his job as
Pacific Gas and Electric Co.’s
governmental and public relations
manager in the midst of California’s
worst energy crisis and weeks after the
company had declared bankruptcy. The
problem-solving skills he developed in
his previous job as district administrator
for then-State Sen. Jack O’Connell were
needed immediately. Jones represents
PG&E before government agencies and
community groups throughout San Luis
Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.
Additionally, he administers the
company’s contributions to community
organizations and works with non-profit
groups.
Until recently, Jones served on the
planning commission in Atascadero,
where he lives with his wife, Kimberly,
and their two children, Ava, 4, and
Brock, 11 ⁄ 2.
“Tom’s emphasis on his family and
community make him an inspiration to
anyone, of any age,” wrote a group of five
persons — including O’Connell — who
nominated Jones.
“The things I do I feel are meaningful
for the community,” said Jones.
His public-spirited streak dates to when
he was 6 and tried to stop a developer
from smashing his treehouse. It didn’t
work, but his belief in getting involved
never waned. Jones graduated with a
degree in political science from the UC
Santa Barbara and started working soon
after for O’Connell.

Bryan M. Krill, 33, is director of investment
management services at R. E. Wacker Associates.
He’s been instrumental in boosting the assets
managed by the firm to $350 million from
$75 million. Krill has also streamlined the
company’s technology,
enabling it to provide
clients timely, more
comprehensive
information.
Krill graduated
from the University
of Southern
California, where
he was one of the
captains of its track and field team in
his senior year. A former world-class sprinter, Krill qualified for the U.S.
Olympic Trials in 1996 and now uses his skills and knowledge helping athletes
train. His volunteering to coach is a way of paying back those who helped him.
“Absolutely nothing that I did, I did all on my own,” he said.
Krill also volunteers as registrar for San Luis Obispo’s American Youth
Soccer Organization, helping to make sure approximately 1,300 kids are
properly signed up to play. Volunteering for AYSO — he’s also coached one of
his son’s teams — is satisfying, said Krill, because so many people volunteer
their time to make it succeed.
Krill and his wife, Tessa, who’s a native of San Luis Obispo, have three sons:

Matt Landre, 29, is a financial advisor in
the wealth management division of
CoastHills Federal Credit Union. A
graduate of Cal Poly’s master’s of business
administration program, Landre is the
credit union’s only financial advisor in San
Luis Obispo County, covering five
branches from Nipomo to Paso Robles.
He’s also become the company’s expert on
health savings accounts. Landre is active in
the Rotary Club San Luis Obispo de Tolosa
and with the Chamber of Commerce.
When CoastHills requested volunteers to
help the Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina,
Landre was among those who went.
“It was life-changing,” said Landre,
whose skills as an emergency medical
technician were put to use during his
three weeks of volunteering in Texas,
where refugees sought shelter. It was
“something you wouldn’t imagine having
to deal with in your day-to-day lives. It
certainly has made me more active in
terms of volunteering.”

Lindsey Miller, who nominated Landre.

Doug MacMillan, 38, continues in the
family business as executive chef of
Rosa’s Italian Restaurant in Pismo Beach.
His parents began the business 18 years
ago and MacMillan co-owns the restaurant
with his father. His mother, Rosa, died in
September. MacMillan uses his culinary
skills to help local nonprofit
organizations raise money. He’s
served food at the Sea Fair, a Big
Brothers fundraiser, and the
Breast Cancer Awareness
luncheon at Edna Valley
Vineyard. MacMillan has
coached youth soccer for years
and one of his favorite
charities is The Futbol
Project, which collects
donated soccer gear that is
then given to youths in
Latin America.
MacMillan, who attended the University of San Diego, is an honorary Rotary
Club member and said that group’s motto — “Service Above Self” — is what
inspires him. “I think everybody’s got to do their share,” he said. “Cooking is
what I do.” His professional accolades include winning the Clam Festival’s clam
chowder competition and taking
home various honors from the
Bouillabaisse Festival in Los Olivos,
including Best in Show and the
People’s Choice award.
In recent years, MacMillan has renovated the restaurant, focusing on the patio
area, and earned a Beautification award from the city of Pismo Beach.
MacMillan and his wife, Shannon, have two children, Brianna, 7, and Nicholas, 2.

Russell Levanway, 28, overcame a
childhood illness that left him legally
deaf to become the chief executive
officer of TekTegrity, a high-tech
company he launched. Levanway is
pioneering remote computer network
support technology, enabling his
company to assist clients without the
need for more expensive service
calls. TekTegrity currently
manages nearly 1,000
computers at school
districts and businesses
countywide.
Levanway, who
graduated from Cuesta
College and earned
lifetime certifications
from Microsoft and Cisco,
volunteers on a regular
basis in the community.
Along with his wife, Sarah,
Levanway has helped cook
and serve meals at the Prado Day Center every month and the couple has
organized volunteers to purchase and deliver holiday gifts through the
charity Operation Christmas Child. They also help provide sign language
services at the Agape Church in San Luis Obispo.

Brendan Morris, 35, carries on the
family legacy as vice president at Morris &
Garritano Insurance agency. He has worked
since 1994 at the agency, which started in
1885. Morris’ accomplishments as sales
manager earned him recognition from
the Pacific Coast Business Times as
one of its Top 40 under 40. He is a
graduate of the San Luis Obispo
Chamber of Commerce Leadership
Class and currently sits on the
chamber’s Issues and Evaluation
Committee. He’s also active in the
Daybreak Rotary Club and
recently completed a three-year
term on the San Luis Obispo
Symphony Board of Directors.
“Brendan is a well-rounded individual (and is) a great father, friend,
businessman and (a) positive force in our community,” said Kurt Jackson, who
nominated Morris.
Morris said he believes “just giving back to the community is so, so
important. That’s what makes San Luis Obispo County the way we are.”

Charlene Rosales, 39, is resource
development manager for United Way of San
Luis Obispo County. In that position, Rosales
revamped how United Way coordinates one
of its major fundraising campaigns, creating
a more focused, organized approach.

Rosales calls volunteering “a really enjoyable passion.”
Last spring, she traveled to Guatemala as part of a volunteer
group providing free eye care services. She’s also a director
of Camp Reach for the Stars, an American Cancer Society
camp for kids with cancer. Rosales is on the board of
directors for the San Luis Obispo County YMCA, is active in
Rotary Daybreak San Luis Obispo and graduated from the
Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership SLO class.
Rosales came to San Luis Obispo from Santa Barbara to attend Cal Poly. She
worked for the Student Community Services program at the university, where
she said she got a taste for volunteering.

Professor, Cal Poly
Louis Rosenberg, 37, holds the
distinction as the only Cal Poly
faculty member appointed as a
professor in two different colleges
at the university. As professor of
educational technology, Rosenberg
works with students in both
education and engineering colleges.
In doing so, he created the Center
for Exhibit Design, in which
students from both disciplines work
together to create educational
museum exhibits. Those will be seen
locally at the recently-completed
Port San Luis Marine Institute in
Avila Beach and in the San Luis
Obispo Children’s Museum,
currently under construction.
It’s “kind of an unusual role,”
Rosenberg said of combining his
education technology expertise with
his engineering background.
Rosenberg received his doctoral
degree in mechanical engineering
from Stanford University and
founded two high-tech start-up
companies in the Bay Area. He
decided to take the appointment at
Cal Poly because as the companies
grew, he was more involved in
administrative tasks. He is one of the
youngest Americans to be awarded
more than 100 patents from the U.S.
Patent Office.
He and his wife, Sherstin, have
two children, Ben, 6, and Zoe, 4.

STACEY STANEK
Marketing director, The Thom Group
Stacey Stanek, 33, is the marketing
director and an investment professional
at the Thom Group, where she
specializes in retirement planning and
full employee benefit packages. She
also oversees the wealth management
company’s health and life insurance
division. Stanek recently started
teaching community classes to help
educate residents about investment and
insurance issues.
Stanek grew up in San Luis Obispo,
where she was a standout volleyball
player at both San Luis Obispo High
School and Cal Poly, earning selection
as an all-conference player. Her
volleyball career included coaching
several youth teams, including her
alma mater’s girl’s varsity team. She
retired from coaching in 2005 after 15
years.
“The more active I am, the better I
feel,” said Stanek. “I love doing
community service.”
An active Rotary Daybreak San Luis
Obispo member, Stanek will become
the club’s youth services director in
June, which will again allow her to
work with San Luis Obispo High
School students. She’s also one of the
top fund raisers in the “Kiss the Pig”
contest benefiting Court-Appointed
Special Advocates and volunteers at
Woods Humane Society.

Ali Semon, 28, never expected to take over as
owner of Frame Works, the company her
parents owned for 14 years. She didn’t even tell
her parents she was interested until they had
lined up another buyer about 2 1⁄ 2 years ago.
Semon had started a teaching career after
graduating in 2001 with a master of arts
degree from UC Santa Barbara, but
switched gears when the opportunity
arose. As owner, she established a
program that gives each full-time
employee a paid half-day off each
month to volunteer in the community.
“I’m very thankful that I get to
live here,” said Semon, “and I want
my employees to feel as connected
to our town as much as I do.”
Semon is quite involved herself.
She was a member of the Chamber
of Commerce’s 2006 Leadership
Class, is active in Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, earning the Paul
Harris Foundation award last year, and is treasurer of the San Luis Obispo
Gallery Association. She was also
the only woman who participated in
the “Battle of the CEOs” at the
Wildflower Triathlon, raising
money for the Special Olympics.
Additionally, Frame Works donates
to “Kids’ Eye View” gallery shows
at the Art Center and ECOSLO.
