Every private club in America has them and Riviera is no exception. Most
inquiries we receive from Members relate somehow to a rule or policy of
the Club.
An important Board initiative this year will be to undertake a full review of
our By-laws and House Rules. By-law amendments require a vote of the
membership. Actions relating to House rules and general policy require a
majority vote of the Board. Why does it make sense to undertake such a
review at this time?
First and foremost, Riviera Country Club must exist and operate by and for
its Members. The rules are in place to protect our privileges as members of
a private club. Indeed, membership is a privilege – not an entitlement – and
each of us enjoys such privileges by virtue of having become a member at
the invitation of another.

The rules also exist for the benefit and enjoyment of all Members. When
our handful of rules are not properly followed and enforced, inequities arise
and governance begins to become problematic.
For the most part, Riviera rules and policies are straightforward, sensible,
fair and in keeping with principles that distinguish us as a private club. No
doubt each of us has probably experienced an inconvenience relating to a
rule – an inconvenience that probably would not exist in a non-private
organization. I would encourage all of us to become familiar with and stay
current on the rules. If you have questions or input, by all means contact
myself or any member of the Board of Governors.
We will continue to communicate on rule changes and proposed By-law
amendments throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Patrick McGrath III

Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D.
Co-Director, University of Miami Ethics Program
Contemporary ethical issues are superb sources of
academic debate and political controversy. From stem cell
research and end-of-life care to computer surveillance and
services for people with disabilities, these controversies
enliven and inform the fabric of discourse in democratic
society. This means that citizenship requires familiarity
with many of these issues. Kenneth Goodman, Director of
the University of Miami's Bioethics Program and Codirector of its overarching Ethics Programs, will share
perspectives on a number of contemporary issues with the
goal of stimulating discussion and debate.

Our second major tournament of the year, The Triple
Tournament, was held in January. Congratulations to the three
winners of this three-day event. In class A, Ann Rubinoff took
first place, in Class B, Maria Urbina came in first, and in
Class C, Melody Eckhart was the winner.
RWGA Triple Trophy
Tournament
Winners
The Twin Tournament was held in February. With a best ball
of the twosome, match play tournament, this is always a fun
event to play. The winners will be announced in next month's
newsletter.
Last month, RWGA members also enjoyed a wonderful round
of 9-holes, followed by lunch and an informative and
interactive Rules Seminar. Golf Pro Kevin Carlson helped us
decipher the "not-so-straightforward" rules of golf. We all were
happy to learn Rule 28 about an "unplayable lie." No, this does
not mean if a ball seems unplayable, kick it and then lie about
it. It does, however, state that a person may deem his ball
unplayable at any place on the course, except when the ball is
in a water hazard. Personally, I think a one-stroke penalty
stroke is much better than trying to hit a ball out of the sand
five times.
Ann Rubinoff
Finally, we are all looking forward to Parrots in the Palms, our
Member-Guest event to be held March 11, 12, and 13. Gail
Gregg and her committee are working hard to make this a
memorable tournament.

Did You Know?
Junior Members are children of a sponsoring Riviera Member,
must be at least 18 years of age if married, or 21 years of age if
unmarried and, in any event, not more than 29 years of age. A
son or daughter of a Member may use the facilities and sign on
their parents' account until such time as they are out of college
or age 25, whichever comes first. At age 25, they must be
sponsored for membership. If thirty or older, they must be
nominated as an Associate Member. A Junior Member has all the
social, golf, and tennis privileges of the Club to which the Junior
Member's sponsoring parent is entitled.
Cell Phone Etiquette
While we do not have an official rule about cell phone
usage at Riviera Country Club, we would like to remind
everyone of our etiquette standard.
• First, change the ring to vibrate mode. If your phone
does not have this feature, go to the lowest volume.
• If you receive a call while in the Clubhouse, please
return the call at a later time, move to a landline Club
telephone, or excuse yourself from your guests and
take the conversation out of the room.
• While on the golf course, tennis courts, driving range,
fitness center, or pool area, please follow the same
courtesies and move your conversation so as not to
disturb others.
Riviera is for the enjoyment of all the Members, and
each of us should make every effort to enjoy them
together. Thank you for your consideration.

check out the fabulous deals. March also means that spring is in
full bloom and we have some fantastic apparel to match the new

Women's
1. Tehama makes a spring debut with a collection called Lunch
at the Club. The name says it all. Great colors in moisture
wicking fabrics and classic fit.
2. Tail Tech is ready to put you in action. Their tech collection,
made up of lifestyle capris, jackets, and shorts in classic navy
and green, is sure to be a big hit.
3. Trigelle returns again this month with another great
embroidered group. This time, the colors are khaki and red
mixed with browns. There is also a fun interchangeable belt
to match!
4. Tail tennis keeps us classic again with a group called Cool

of silver. This is sure to keep you cool on the court!
5. Lacoste for kids has a few new styles, including cute tanks
for girls and swim trunks for boys.
Men's
1. Polo goes back to basics BUT with a new twist. You will find
very colorful shorts in orange and yellow.
2. Bobby Jones finally comes back in the spring with a very
elegant color palette that can easily crossover to the
summer/early fall season.
Please look for the postcard that will go out regarding our Spring

Flatten your Abs
By Lee Naccarato, M.S. Athletic Director
The "belly pooch" is a top problem for many women. Since females tend to carry more body fat than males, it is extremely difficult for
women to achieve the "six pack" abs you see on fitness competitors and professional athletes. However, it is possible to trim your tummy
with the right types of exercise. Although it is true that you cannot spot reduce one area, decreasing your overall body fat will help flatten
your abdominals, since you generally shrink fat all over your body, including the abdomen. One of the best ways to burn fat is with high
intensity cardio exercise like aerobics, kickboxing, or running. These types of workouts torch calories and raise your metabolism to help
burn fat and calories.
Eventually, as you continue to drop body fat, you will whittle your waistline too. Ideally, you should strive for four to five cardio sessions a
week, each lasting for 30-60 minutes. To really burn optimal calories, make sure the workouts are at least moderately intense. Another
important component of toning your abdominals is core conditioning and abdominal strength exercises. As your body fat decreases, your
abdominal muscles will start to show. By working on your core, which includes your abdomen, you will have a stronger, tighter tummy to
display. Two of the best abdominal toners are Pilates and stability ball exercises. Pilates movements focus heavily on your core, with slow
and controlled movements. Stability ball exercises help strengthen the abs beyond traditional sit ups, because the ball allows for greater
range of motion for your abdominal muscles. The unstable platform also makes your ab muscles work harder and in different ways. You
should plan for two to three abdominal strength training workouts each week. Like any other muscle group, most experts suggest that you
give your abs a day of rest in between workouts. Particularly if it is a tough, all abs program, take a 24-hour break to rest.
Finally, keep in mind that your diet plays a big part in how you will look, so stick to a healthy diet to help you get that tight and toned
tummy you want!

Teen Winter Dance
The Winter Teen Dance was the first teen dance at Riviera
Country Club since the 1960s. Special thanks to Marie
McGrath and Christopher Ingham who worked closely with
Athletic Director Lee Naccarato to plan the event. Our RCC
teens danced to their favorite music, provided by DJ Jazz,
munched on fun snacks, and mingled with their
friends.
Watch your emails and the Riviera Gazette
for news of the next Teen event.
