Riviera has been judged a five-star
Platinum Club since 1999.
I am proud to report to you that once again, Riviera
Country Club has been selected by The Club Leaders
Forum as a Platinum Club of America. This excellent
rating, which is conducted every three years, is intended to
identify America’s most highly regarded private clubs. Riviera ranked number
53 among country clubs throughout the United States. This designation was
arrived at when over 6,000 of this nation’s club managers and club presidents
were recently solicited for their opinions of club preeminence in five different
areas: quality of membership, tradition and heritage, amenities, governance, and
professional management and staff. To be selected as a Platinum Club means
that Riviera stands among the top four percent of America’s private clubs. The
membership and staff has a right to be proud of this honor, because it stands as
a tribute to everyone who contributed so much to this achievement.
Congratulations, everyone.
Camp Riv is up and running and from all indications is a resounding success.
Thank you to Lee Nacarato, Athletic Director; Barry Phillips, Golf Pro; and
Alina Pila, Tennis Pro, and their staff of summer counselors that help keep our
youngest Riviera members busy and happy throughout the summer.
Whether you are traveling for the next couple of months or remaining here to
enjoy the Riviera amenities, I hope you have a most enjoyable summer.
Bill Wagner

Play it Safe!
Texas Hold ‘Em Tournaments
Although Riviera Country Club is considered by most of us to
be an oasis and safe haven in the middle of our bustling city,
it is important not to leave purses, briefcases, and other
personal items in view in our vehicles. Most parking lot
break-ins happen when an item is in plain view. The result is a
smash and grab!
It has been suggested by some of your fellow Members that
Riviera host poker tournaments during the year.
We do have security personnel walking through the parking
lots from time to time, but please help us remove the
temptation.
• A maximum of 33 players would be able to
participate in each event
• Club prizes would be awarded
• Deli Buffet would be provided
In an effort to gauge interest, please let us know
how often you would be interested in playing:
once a year, twice a year, quarterly, monthly?
Please e-mail us at [email protected]
or call 305 661-5331 ext. 245 with further suggestions.

Rubber Bridge Players
Riviera Duplicate Bridge players are always encouraging you
to join us. We would like to invite you to come and observe
our Monday Duplicate game and see for yourselves how
much fun it can be! We have several Rubber Bridge players
who took the leap to Duplicate Bridge this year, and they are
doing very well.
There are a few little rules to remember when you are
observing a game. Do not be intimidated by the rules, they
mainly show you how to be courteous to the player/table you
are watching. We warmly invite you to watch and enjoy the
action!

Junior Cotillion 2006
Children in third through eighth grades are invited to join
the 2005 season of Riviera Junior Cotillion. Riviera Junior
Cotillion believes in the importance of giving children the
tools to negotiate various social situations they will face
now and in the future. The Cotillion experience is
designed to give your child self-esteem and selfconfidence in interacting with peers and adults.
(L-R) Maida Farrar and
Hallie Yanno
Students learn the basics of ballroom dance, including the
waltz, foxtrot, swing, rumba, merengue, salsa, cha-cha,
and others. Social graces include introductions, making a
good first impression, telephone courtesy, correspondence,
respect, courses of a meal, table manners, and table
settings. The fifth through eighth grades will also cover
use of cell phones, instant messaging, and internet
responsibility and courtesy. Students learn through
demonstration, various skits, role-play, “game shows,” and
hands-on experience.

The RWGA season of major tournaments is over, but the summer
season has begun, with many ladies participating in the weekly
events. The starting times are now from 8:00 to 10:00 A.M. on
Tuesdays, to accommodate those who wish to beat the heat. The
shotgun start times will remain at 8:30 or 8:45 A.M. Turn in all
scorecards to the Golf Pro Shop, and they will record your scores
for handicap purposes.
The Rules Seminar that Kevin Carlson conducted was very well
attended, which means everyone will be playing by the rules or
will be able to look up a rule, if necessary. Kevin recommended
that the rule book be kept in your golf bag. He pointed out that
often knowing the correct rule can be to your advantage. Knowing
how to look up the rule is even more helpful. Good luck!
Once again for all those who are out of town for the summer,
please record your scores and submit them to the Golf Pro Shop
to ensure a proper handicap when you return in the Fall.
A special thanks to the Golf Pro Shop for all their assistance over
the year, to Dottie Norton for stepping up to take the presidency,
and to her Board who worked so well together.
Have a wonderful summer!
These next two months here at the
Golf Pro Shop will bring some
exciting new collections of styles
and colors that are great for the hot
summer months. With July 4th just
around the corner, please make sure to stop by the
shop for some great savings on this holiday weekend!
Look for these and other new collections in July and
August:
Women’s
1. Tommy Hilfiger makes a splash in our store with a
very pretty palette of mint greens, white, pinks, and
light blues, with a collection called A Day at the
Races. The name gives you an idea of what
patterns to expect!
2. Polo comes back just in time for the 4th with a
great nautical theme in navy, white, and green.
Super preppy!
3. In August, Burberry returns to the shop in a very
classic collection of white and black
4. Also in August, EP Pro brings us a refreshing
collection called Frisco in white, reds, and khakis.
Mix and match shirts and shorts with other great
collections in the store!
Junior Golf
Kyle Parker (age 14) has won a full scholarship
to attend the Ferris State Golf Academy in Big
Rapids, Michigan, this summer. Out of 50
potential applicants, only four to six outstanding
golfers are selected. Way to go, Kyle!
Men’s
1. July brings back Bugatchi in more of their fun
colors, such as mint green, light yellow, and
raspberry. Very summery!
2. August will bring Polo classics back in basic
whites, oranges, greens, and khakis. Great for
matching with any other pant or short in the shop.
Riviera Classic
Member-Member
Tournament
3. Bobby Jones makes his fall debut with a wonderful
splash of color, with mint greens in plaids, stripes,
jacquards, and mocks!
These are only a handful of collections that are to
come in these next two months, so please stop by and
see all the exciting new merchandise!

From the Green Committee
Leigh Livesay, Chairman
We are pleased to welcome our new Director of Agronomy, Eric
von Hofen, who will oversee golf course care and maintenance
operations. Eric is a 1992 graduate of Ohio State University,
Agricultural Technical Institute. He has since amassed years of
experience in golf course care, including the new ultradwarf
grasses that we have here at Riviera – Tif-Eagle greens.
Additionally, he has been in charge of preparing a number of
courses for PGA Tour events. We are confident that his experience
and expertise will take us to the next level.
By the time you read this, we will have had two green
aerifications. There will be two additional ones by the end of the
summer, as well as a number of verticuts and other routine
summertime maintenance. This summer’s schedule will be a fairly
aggressive approach, with care taken to cause as little interruption
of play as possible, however some inconvenience may occur. We
thank you for your patience and promise that in the near future,
we will reap the benefits of this necessary maintenance.

Consequently, the development of long-range, intermediate, and

A Few Tips from The American Red Cross
To Keep You and Your Family Safe This Summer Season:
Swim only in areas where you are in a lifeguard’s line of
vision. If there is no guard on duty, swim with a partner or
make sure someone reliable is watching. Arm flotation devices
are a great idea for young children, but are not a replacement
for parental supervision.
WELLNESS TIPS FOR SUMMER…
Don’t forget your lips when applying sunscreen! The lower
lip is one of the most common sites for skin cancer. Use a clear
or colored sunscreen lipstick or, for better protection, an opaque
sun block.
If you have a pool at your home, keep the following close by
