Riviera has been judged a five-star Platinum Club since 1999. Is is difficult to believe that we have already reached the fifth year of the new millennium. I suppose it’s true that ‘time flies when you’re having fun’, and we have certainly had that during a most joyous holiday season here at Riviera. It was wonderful to see so many happy kids – of all ages – enjoying the festivities at the Club. It bodes well for what we expect to be a banner year in 2005, and that you will join us for many of the activities we have planned. There is a bit of sad news for Riviera, but good news for Aggie Morgenthal. She is leaving us, after seven years as our Pro Shop Manager, to open up her own business in Weston. We will miss her terribly, but wish her every success in her new venture. We are currently searching for her successor, who will have Aggie’s high standards to live up to. We are also still looking for a few good new members. Remember that the number one reason given for not joining a private club is not being invited! Asking a friend to be a candidate for membership in your club is one of the greatest compliments you can give to an individual. Elisa Swaebe, our Membership Director, will be happy to help you coordinate the process and make your friend feel right at home. Here’s to another triumphant and memorable year at Riviera. The results of the Triple Trophy Tournament were as follows: Flight #1 Ann Rubinoff; Flight #2 Johanne Harries; Flight #3 Peggy Vogelsang. The winners of the Annual Mixed event, a best ball foursome, were: First Place Riane and Jeff Leigh and Libby and Joe Cerniglia; Second Place Johanne and Stuart Harries and Jodi and Robert Hoffman; Third Place was a tie between Karen and Joe Scott and Maria Urbina and Ben Barnas and Joan and Allen Bradford and Donna and Gordon Fales; Fifth Place Sally and Bob Gordon and Melva and Bill Depkin. The hardworking Chairs of this event were Emily Romfh and Jeanne Harper. The One-Day Member-Guest was a success with a full field. The winners are listed in the box on the right. The Christmas Luncheon organized by Melva Depkin and her committee was such fun, with a Lady Santa passing out the candy canes this year. Awards were presented for the Triple Trophy. REMEMBER: The Annual Two-Day Member-Guest Classic, “Parrots in the Palms,” will be held Monday, March 14, and Tuesday, March 15. You can have a practice round on Friday the 11th or Sunday the 13th. Sunday cocktails and dinner are included in the entrance fee. The sign-up will be on January 18th in the Pro Shop. Mark your calendar, last year we had a waitlist. This tournament is open to all women golf members and guests with a USGA handicap. We would be happy to have you or your friends or your company or your friend’s company sponsor or underwrite any part of this tournament. Contact the Chairs, Pennie Mase and Lynn Buoniconti, or check the Ladies’ Locker Room for this opportunity. The tournament will benefit the Sylvester Center for Breast Cancer. I hope the holidays were the best and your New Year brings you a lot of prizes and holes-in one!! Page 6 www.rivieracc.com Recently, some golfers have asked about the rules for turning in scores for play away from Riviera. “A basic premise underlies the USGA Handicap System, namely that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round….” USGA Handicap System Section 1-1 It is expected that all members who play at other clubs, be it here in Miami or in places like North Carolina, Colorado, or wherever, will turn in all scores for all rounds played. A player shall contact the Pro Shop with the date, score, slope and course rating for the round played. The handicap system is based on the honor of each and every one of us. And, in case it’s forgotten, the game is supposed to be fun. Shotgun January 2005 The 2004 Junior/Senior Challenge Cup came down to the last group on the last hole, with both of the Juniors having to win the hole to win the cup. The story could not have been written any better, knowing that the Seniors have won two of the last three years. One Senior even told a Junior before play on Day One that the only way for him to win was by turning 50. During the Day One morning matches, the Juniors quickly put the Seniors behind the eight ball, taking a 5.5 to 1.5 lead after fourball play. The Seniors turned around, in the afternoon, and showed why they are the cagey veterans, by coming back to within one point overall, and winning 5 to 2 in foursome play. Day Two provided continued suspense, with the highly contested singles matches. As each match was posted, neither side took any significant lead. Finally, with one foursome on the course, two matches being played, the Juniors needed a point and a half to take the cup back. Ray Zomerfeld was one down and Eddie Martinez was even standing on the 18th tee. The cup was now in their hands. They both had to win the treacherous 18th hole. With the Juniors’ Captain, Mike Battle, and the rest of the team cheering them on, both men went on to win the hole and the cup for the Juniors. Congratulations Juniors! Welcome to 2005. The course is a year and a half old and is maturing as well as I had expected. The fairways have developed a nice thatch layer to help hold up to cart traffic and to give a little cushion under the ball. The greens are maintaining excellent speed and smoothness. Overall, the course condition is very good. My staff and I are into our season maintenance schedule. We are grooming and detailing the course for everyday play and special events. In addition to normal maintenance, we will be trimming trees and cleaning up some perimeter out-of-bounds areas. Again, thank you for all the cooperation with regard to the cart traffic rule for the day, which has enhanced the quality of the fairways. Remember to fill your divots, fix your ball marks, and stay on your cart paths, whenever possible. Finally, on behalf of my staff, I would like to thank all the members for the generous Christmas bonuses. Have a Happy 2005. Aggie’s (Last) Corner After seven wonderful and unforgettable years as your Pro Shop Manager and Merchandise Buyer, I thank every member and the great staff of Riviera Country Club. I will be departing in January and moving on to fulfill my long-time professional vision and goal of owning my own business. In March 2005, I will open The Weston Collection – Gifts of Distinction (located in the new Weston Commons Shopping Center), which will feature a wide array of china, stemware, tabletop serving pieces, children’s gifts, custom invitations, bridal and special occasion invitations, and also gift items, including candles, small gift items, and accessories. I enjoyed having the opportunity to transform the Riviera Golf Pro Shop after it was remodeled a few years ago. I am pleased to say that the Shop is held in high regard, even outside the region. I would welcome the opportunity to see you at The Weston Collection, where I will provide personal shopping to meet your needs. If you can’t get to Griffin Road and Weston Road just West of I-75, please go to www.thewestoncollection.com. Holiday Round Robin Page 8 www.rivieracc.com Riviera Gazette Fitness News Revitalize…your life By Tessa Valla, Athletic Director It’s a new year and a new approach to life. Trends come and go, but the basics remain. You need to move in order to keep your metabolism going and your energy level high. Diet alone will not keep you healthy, exercise is the key, and the sooner you implement it in your daily routine, the faster you will see results, not only in your stamina, but also in the quality of your life. It is a basic fact that oxygen-rich blood will give you more energy and will keep you going longer, stronger, and faster. In daily life, when we become oxygen deprived, we feel sluggish. Our daily tasks feel heavier and more draining. Simply driving the car will feel like torment, due to lack of oxygen in your body. We get headaches and neck tension, not to mention stress. A simple remedy to these ailments is to increase the oxygen in your blood. You can achieve this by strengthening your cardiovascular system and increasing your stroke volume. With a simple plan that incorporates daily exercise, we can conquer the ailments…well, maybe not all of them…we still need to drive.☺ So follow my simple mantra, “REVITALIZE” and start feeling better! Remember to make your schedule so you have time to… Exercise. Validate and honor the… Importance of daily movement. Take charge of your well-being and Always, stick to the routine. Love what you do and do what you love. Ignore the voice in your head that tells you to quit.
