Curtains & Pelmets
Deanswood
success over the
last forty years
has been based
on three founding
principles –
quality, reliability
and service and
as with all our
products, we take
great pride in
what we produce
and deliver.
Our team of expert curtain-makers are exceptional
in their abilities and deliver a handnished product
of the highest quality - which means that our
clients enjoy a bespoke service that interprets
their designs and helps make them come alive!
Naturally, designers and architects expect their
modern day and traditional designs to be
interpreted in the finished product and this is
where Deanswood Interiors really do excel. The
importance of professional on-site preparation
and installation is paramount and our experienced
team of fitters and project managers ensures that
curtain and window blind designs are hung and
dressed to perfection.
Interlined curtains
These consist of three layers, the face fabric, the lining
and a thick cotton “bump” fabric that sits between. As well
as helping with heat retention and draughts the main reason
for using is for the sumptuous look and feel of the curtain
and the excellent draping properties that interlining gives.
However, to achieve this effect great skill is required in hand
sewing the layers together and ensuring all layers sit well
together. The great majority of our curtains are interlined, as the
discerning customer would not be happy with anything else.
Lined curtains
There are occasions when lined only curtains would be
appropriate such as when a soft, flowing informal feel is
required. Equal care is required in ensuring hand-sewn
stitches do not show and the layers sit well together.
For this look it is important to select the correct face fabric
and you are advised to contact us with your fabric selection
before proceeding.
Unlined curtains
Reserved for “see through” fabrics such as sheers but also
now for the many fabrics that have cutout shapes for effect.
Many of these modern fabrics are very delicate and should
only be used where on site disturbance is not likely to occur.
They can also be difficult and time consuming to sew and you
should contact us for advice before final selection is made.
Hand pencil pleat
Smocked heading
This heading is done entirely by hand without the use of
a heading tape (Regis, etc.) and as such gives a perfect
invisible stitch finish. This heading is ideal for valances
and curtain that are held in the centre and pulled back
on tiebacks (or Italian Strung curtains).
Starting with hand pencil pleating each pleat is formed
into a honeycomb shape by hand and sewn into position
usually using a contrast thread. This is a very time consuming
operation but gives a stunning result. Particularly effective
on valances but also on curtains where they are not drawn
back.
If used on curtains that draw then the effect is not so
pleasing when the curtains are in the stacked position.
This heading needs at least 2¾ times fullness to give
the proper effect.
Hand pinch pleat
Eyelet heading
Made with buckram stiffening, this heading is ideal for
a formal setting and promotes more uniform folds in the
fabric and also creates a neat stack back when curtains
are drawn closed.
This is a more modern heading for use with decorative
poles and promotes perfect folds in the fabric of the curtains.
There are three main sizes of the eyelets, 40mm, 50mm and
66mm, which will work with 28mm to 50mm diameter poles.
The eyelets come in a variety of colours and metal effects.
The curtains can only be drawn by hand and need to be
adjusted when in the closed position to retain the evenness
of the folds but they can stack back into a very small space
to get maximum light from the window.
Usually made with 3 pleats but also can be made with
double or single pleats. Fullness required is 2½ times
although less can be used especially on bulky fabrics.
Hand goblet pleat
Wave
Made in a similar fashion to pinch pleat but instead of
making the pleat the fabric is formed into a flute shape
and stuffed with polyester to retain it’s shape. The heading
can be made more luxurious with the addition of a knotted
and looped rope to the bottom of the pleats.
A new headings produced by using a special tape which
gives a similar effect and the same even-ness of fold as
eyelet hung from special curtain tracks or poles. They also
have the advantage that the folds do not need adjusting
each time the curtains are pulled. Like eyelets give a tight
stack back.
Depending on thickness of fabrics less fullness is used to
make this pleat and it should be noted that these curtains
will not stack back as tight as pinch pleats.
Standard tape heading
A simple heading using a 1 inch tape with pull strings
to gather up the curtain. Can be used when the top
of the curtain is covered with a pelmet or for a simple
application where cost is of importance.
Swags and Tails
Perhaps the most versatile of pelmet arrangements to
ornament any curtain arrangement. They can be made in any
number of swags, any size and shape and with any decoration
or trimming. They are ideal for use in a formal setting in
drawing or dining rooms but can also be arranged in an
informal setting with soft flowing folds.
We are happy to help with the design to compliment any
window shape and will prepare scale drawings and templates
prior to manufacture. There are also numerous design books
on swags and tails to help in the choice from which we are
please to interpret.
Hard Pelmets
Hard pelmets can be made in any shape or size required,
limited only by your own imagination. Ropes fringes can
be added to enhance the look as well as padding to soften
the effect. Our many years of experience can be called on
to help with designs and shapes.
Again these are ideal in more formal settings perhaps
especially in dining room but suitable designs can be
used around the house.
Valances
For a softer look for any room, choose a fabric valance.
Valances have the fabric gathered up in a variety of forms
and these are called headings.
A variety of these can be seen on a later page and a range
of effects can be achieved by choosing an appropriate
heading. Apart from a simple gathered heading all other
heading are hand sewn without the use of heading tapes
thus ensuring a top class finish.
