As Told by Kelly Gross, Team Captain On July 10, the Concord-Carlisle Regional High School student organization “Helping Heading Home” funded and fully executed an incredible Up & Out move for the Cruz family in Dorchester. In order to provide the Cruz family with what they needed, the students met with Felicita Cruz before the move to understand her needs and hear her family’s story. (Meeting with the family is a traditional and meaningful interaction for any Up & Out move.) When Felicita was asked what she wanted for her new home, out of all the things in the world, she said she wanted a bookshelf — even if she got nothing else for her apartment. She went on to explain that any time one of her kids misbehaved, instead of the typical parenting techniques, she gave her children the opportunity to write a book report as their punishment. This meeting is what impacted the students most — the courage of the Cruz family and particularly Felicita’s strength as a single working mother. After meeting with the Cruz family, first thing on the to-do list for the Concord-Carlisle students was to find a bookshelf, along with plenty of toys for the Cruz children. The students looked for all the items within the Concord and Carlisle communities and received numerous donations. The students also held a raffle in the spring of 2010 and raised more than $2,500 to purchase new beds and other miscellaneous items necessary for the move. Helping Heading Home’s immense and tireless effort resulted in a success — the Cruz family was beyond happy with the finished product. Seconds after the unveiling of their new home, the Cruz children were ripping books off of their bookshelf, racing around their living room on their new scooter, jumping on their new bunk beds, each of them trying to be the first one up the ladder to the top bunk, and smiling the whole time. Performing an Up & Out move was only a small gift in return for the hard work and effort that Felicita Cruz put in over the years with the guidance of Heading Home staff. The Cruz family deserved everything in their new apartment, and they represent only one of the many successful moves this year. A special thanks to all of the families within the Concord-Carlisle community who donated items for the move, and of course the students who dedicated their time and effort to make a difference. Heading Home provides the setting where I can lend my real estate expertise to help with the zoning process and develop affordable housing to help end homelessness. On May 6, more than 500 attendees gathered at Two International Place in Boston for Heading Home’s HOUSEWARMING, our major annual fundraiser. This fundraiser unites Greater Boston’s finest chefs and restaurants with local business leaders and philanthropists to help Heading Home end homelessness for good. Due to the extraordinary efforts of Event Co-Chairs John and Mary Fowler and the significant contributions of event sponsors, the event raised more than $450,000! Heading Home Administrative Office What has been the most rewarding aspect of being on the board? Meeting and learning the stories of Heading Home’s clients. It is easy to have misconceptions about the homeless, but my understanding of their lives and the difficulties they face has grown immensely. I’ve learned that the majority of Heading Home’s clients are single mothers, and it is rewarding as a board member and a father to know that we are helping both children and their families. Where do you see the organization in five years? In 2009 Heading Home helped more than 1,500 families and I only see that number growing. Our goal is to continue to develop our programs and comprehensive support services to serve more people in need. Property development in the next five years will be key to attain this goal and to help end homelessness in Greater Boston. In addition to my cycling and riding? Throughout the summer (I’m an avid cyclist and former competitive swimmer/triathlete), my family and I spend summer weekends hiking and swimming. In the wintertime we ski up at our place in Sugarbush, Vermont with Sydney and our dog Freckles, a 10-year-old senior German Shorthaired Pointer who we rescued at age 8. We are active with the German Shorthaired Pointer Rescue League of New England, and Freckles is the second senior Pointer we rescued through the organization (our sweet Gretchen, who I rescued at 11, lived to be 16!). ending homelessness for good ending homelessness for good Why did you become involved with Heading Home? Development Associate Personnel/Finance Assistant Administrative Assistant Following opening remarks by Heading Home’s Executive Director Tom Lorello and Board Chair Nick Iselin, John and Mary Fowler shared how they became involved with Heading Home. Thanks to John Hynes, the previous event chair, and after touring Heading Home’s Medford Shelter, they were inspired to take a leadership role. The Fowlers then introduced Anacely Lebron and Maria Rivera, both Heading Home clients and mothers of young children. Ms. Lebron and Ms. Rivera delivered heartfelt speeches about their respective struggles with family homelessness, and how Heading Home’s unique services and able staff have helped them gain new life and job skills to achieve success and self-sufficiency. The stories of these remarkable young women roused a standing ovation from the inspired audience. After warmly thanking our guest speakers, Mr. and Mrs. Fowler handed the podium over to guest auctioneer Dan McLaughlin, who managed a live bidding battle for “priceless” items including vacation getaways and sports event packages. Impromptu testimonials from long-time Heading Home champions Jon Davis and Phill Gross added to the auction’s spirit and success, helping us raise more than $50,000 in the live auction alone. Special thank you to Managing Editor Aliza Miller and contributing writers Carli Baum and Kelly Gross Become a fan of Heading Home on Facebook! Event Co-Chairs John and Mary Fowler, Anacely Lebron and Heading Home’s Chief Development Officer Wendy Jacobs Thank you to our volunteers! In addition, attendees collectively contributed nearly $20,000 to the Heading Home Registry, which provides gift options of varying price points for household items that clients need as they make the milestone move from a shelter to a home. These gift options include furniture, bedding, and kitchenware. The Heading Home Registry is consistently popular because of its ability to directly address our clients’ most pressing needs. We are proud to say this event continues its long tradition of attracting strong and passionate leaders who both understand our community’s needs and who are willing to engage the community at large. John and Mary Fowler are no exception, and we are extremely grateful for their countless contributions as 2010 HOUSEWARMING Event Co-Chairs. Heading Home newsletter is mailed by Charles River Arc A New Apartment and a Fresh Start Mr. Fowler, the Executive Managing Director of Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P. reflected, “Those of us in the real estate community understand the importance of providing the homeless with a combination of shelter and services so that they can ultimately lead independent lives.” Mrs. Fowler added, “The current economic climate has created a tremendously difficult time for homeless families and individuals and for the organizations that support them. John and I are committed to making the Heading Home HOUSEWARMING a success so that we all can make a difference in the lives of the homeless.” Nicholas Cruz We are also grateful to our event underwriters Adage Capital Management L.P., Holliday Fenoglio Fowler L.P., and Alan & Sherry Leventhal, as well as all event sponsors, committee members, volunteers, and attendees, including the participation of 16 of Greater Boston’s finest restaurants. Established in 1978, NAIOP Massachusetts advances responsible commercial real estate development, representing private property rights for the entire industry, and has remained Heading Home’s single largest contributor. Raising nearly $125,000 in this year’s tournament, NAIOP Massachusetts has contributed more than $1.5 million to Heading Home over the past 22 years. But the tournament’s success was not only measured in dollars and cents: This year, for the first time, participants were encouraged to bring housewares for Heading Home’s Up & Out program. We were thrilled by the many generous donations. We would like to thank all the participants and sponsors who made this possible, including a special thanks to NAIOP’s Board Chair Tom Collins and the able staff at NAIOP led by CEO David Begelfer. Seminars. Success. Co-Chairs John & Mary Fowler, Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P. Message from the Executive Director Tom Lorello In recent years, change has been a constant at Heading Home. It is change for the better - change that is sorely needed. But doing things differently never seems to come without detractors or inconvenience. We are in the midst of such challenging times but are confident that our efforts for change will once again be worth the cost. The economist Joseph Shumpeter uses the term “creative destruction” to refer to the process through which a better, more productive way of doing things destroys the less efficient ways that precedes it. He calls attention to the fact that people who have a significant investment in the “old ways” are often unhappy about the changes that occur. The transition is often difficult at first. Shumpeter is thinking about such processes as the transition from horse and buggy to automobiles (the horse and buggy owners were apparently quite perturbed). I am thinking about movement to a better way of addressing homelessness that gets our clients into housing within a 2-3 month period. Long-term homelessness, simply put, is extremely harmful to families and particularly children. It is a shaky platform from which to improve one’s situation. As we have said in the past, home is the foundation. The sooner families are housed the better. Period. Heading Home has reorganized its staff and has secure, flexible funding from the State Department of Housing and Community Development. With the State “flex funds” we are able to assess families, immediately find them housing, and help pay their rent, which will save about $250,000 a year and benefit our clients in meaningful ways. Our goals for this year working within the new system are two-fold: help more families and faster. By getting families into permanent housing, we dramatically decrease the amount of time they spend in potentially harmful or dangerous environments. We also expect to save money in the coming year to aid this process. So what is the detractor or the inconvenience? Our work will be more challenging, more complicated, and follow a path unknown. It will be stressful. We have been here before; however, I know we will thrive in the new system and learn from the journey. As was the case when we developed 100 new units of housing in under three years (between 2005 and 2008), our mission will be better served and your investment in us more wisely used as a result. We are fortunate to have so many loyal supporters. Thanks to all of you. Sincerely, Tom Lorello, MSW Executive Director John Fowler, Fred Wittmann and Mary Fowler Jon and Emily Weintraub Jon Davis Nick Iselin David and Denise Rufo Susan and David Fowler, Helen Wynyard and Ted Oatis On June 16, Heading Home, in partnership with Families First, MIDAS Collaborative, and Whole Foods, hosted more than 100 people for a symposium on self-sufficiency at the Reggie Lewis Center at Roxbury Community College. Parents and family members attended seminars on parenting, financial planning, and nutrition presented by the hosting organizations. While parents participated in the seminars, their children and volunteers read together, made t-shirts, and enjoyed team building activities. Motivational speaker Chris Stevens, Vice President of Keurig, reflected, “It was a privilege to meet many of the families who are benefiting from the wonderful work of Heading Home. We hope to be a long-term supporter of this great organization.” Additionally, the founder of Shoes4Kids and physical therapist Brad Thuringer outfitted all children with socks and sneakers.
