President’s Message
Summer is here and the time is right for dancin' in
the .......................Rhapsody Ballroom!
School may be out for some, but remember that
Rhapsody Ballroom offers some fantastic group
classes and social dances throughout the
month. Just check out the schedule on the small
white board at the front table to see which dances
will be featured in the classes. You'll find a nice variety of dances taught by very talented Instructors! Check it out sometime and join a class or
two! There's no better way to practice the patterns
you learn in the group classes (or in your private lessons) than to come to the open social dances held
every Wednesday and Friday nights. There are social
dances on some Saturday nights also. See the schedule for specific dates. Practice makes perfect!
Be sure to always check out the flyers, newsletters
and announcements on the front desk. It will keep
you updated on the latest dance happenings at
Rhapsody Ballroom and with our USA Dance/
Southern Star Chapter.
We hope you are enjoying the themes we have been
having for our monthly USA Dances. If you have any
suggestions for themes you'd like to see us have in
the future, just let one of the Board Members
know. Your ideas are always welcome! Be sure to
wear your Patriotic colors of Red, White, and Blue for
our July dance!
I would like to personally thank all of our volunteers
who help out each month and make our Southern
Star Chapter dances run so smoothly! There's no
way I could do it without you all! Thank you
to: Mike, Peg, Elaine, Jackie, Hyeyong, Stan, Nancy,
Martha,
Mandy,
Tala,
Lurlene,
and
Lelia!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to Nikki and Jerry for the newsletter and website, and to Richard and Laurie Collette
for the use of Rhapsody Ballroom each month!
Our Belle of the Ball project, headed up by Jackie
Blount, has been quite successful! Nearly one hundred gowns have been donated by our chapter as
well
as
purses,
jewelry
and
shoes. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep on collecting and bringing in your donated items, as we will be collecting
throughout the year for this very worthy
cause! Please see Jackie or another Board Member if
you need more information.
At the end of April I attended the annual District 9
Leadership Meeting, representing our Southern Star
Chapter as well as being there as President of our
chapter. The meeting and Dance Spree was hosted
by the Greater Daytona Chapter at the Gold Star Ballroom in Daytona. We went over lots of National rules
and regulations in my meeting. Our chapter is on
the right track with everything. YAY! I can tell you
that our Chapter is very highly thought of, not
only within District 9 here in Florida, but at the National level! Let's keep this positive trend going!!!!!!!
During the Dance Spree, Mike and Peg Johnston and
I joined three others to form a last minute "Team"
and compete in the Team Match along with five
other teams that Friday evening. We had a lot of fun
and.........................we ended up winning the Team
Match, complete with trophies and many compliments from others! WOO HOO! We also proudly displayed our new USA Dance/Southern Star banner
during the "Parade of Chapters!" The Dance Spree
weekend is open to all to join. There is an open social dance each of the evenings, and a full day of
workshops on Saturday taught by local Daytona Professionals. It is held every year in Daytona. Maybe
you should come participate with us next year!!!!!!!
As always, I'd like to leave you with my quote: "To
be able to dance is both a joy and a privilege. But, to
be able to dance among friends is truly a blessing!"

May Dance
by
Tracey Zirfas
We’re so proud of his year’s group from the Strawberry Crest High School dance club, pictured here with their instructor, Daria
Kopylov. Great job everybody! We really enjoyed your show!
Spring was definitely in the air on May 11th at our
monthly USA Dance. Dancers wore lots of spring colors and flowers. Mike Johnston even wore a flowered tie! WOW! That, plus he and Peg's great music
set
the
tone
for
the
night!
We had a super crowd,
the best we've had for
a while. Let's hope this
trend keeps up! We
welcomed a few more
new and renewing
members.
They
proudly smiled as they
received their new embroidered shoe bags
and gold star pins!
The evening’s entertainment was something quite
special that we all look forward to each year. It featured the Strawberry Crest High School students,
who are part of our Youth Program. Part of our
membership dues fund this program. These fun and
energetic High School dancers are coached by Daria
Kopylov, the beautiful and talented daughter of
Yulia and Sergey Kopylov. They started out with a
very Jazzy Tango that really got the crowd's atten-
tion. This was followed by quite a snazzy Cha Cha,
complete with hats, suspenders, and matching outfits. They all certainly looked the part as well as
danced the part of experienced dancers! They didn't
seem nervous at all and were so much fun to
watch. It was nice to see that there were quite a few
family members there to cheer, watch, and video
tape their relatives. Several of the SCHS dancers
stayed to join in the dancing fun after the show, including our "Fireball Mixer." A great time was had
by all. Nobody really wanted the dance to end!
Thank you again to all our volunteers who help out
each and every month. It's truly a Team Effort
and we love it! You all are truly appreciated!!!!!

June Dance
by
Tracey Zirfas
The evening’s entertainment was provided by:
Jim, Yulia, Mike, Hyeyong, Jong, and Sergey.
ALOHA!
We had a fun-filled Luau themed dance for our June
USA Dance. There were many dancers who got into
the spirit of our theme by dressing up in lots of
flowered lei's, grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts, and
flowered skirts. We even had a surprise Hula dance.
We picked four gentleman dancers who had no idea
why they were being called up to the dance
floor. Jackie Blount and I put grass skirts and coconut bras on them as we proceeded to tell them they
were now going to do a Hula dance (called the Hukilau-which I learned just for this evening's dance!) for
all of us to admire! Mike Johnston then put on the
Hukilau song and I then danced the Hukilau in front
of them as they followed along. What a HOOT they
were!!!!! Poor Jin. He just couldn't keep his coconut
bra up and it kept slipping down to his waist! Joe
really had the Hula hip movement down pat! We all
want to thank Jin, Joe, Norman, and Bill for being
such GREAT sports and doing the Hula dance for
us!!!!! Maybe we should take this act on the
road???????? America's Got Talent just started their
new season. LOL!
For our dance entertainment, we were treated to the
talents of Yulia and Sergey Kopylov and some of
their students. First, Sergey danced a beautiful Foxtrot with Jong. Her elegant dress showed off her
dance moves perfectly. We love to watch her
dance! Next was Yulia dancing with Mike Johnston
and their classic Waltz routine from this year's Show
of Shows. Did you notice Mike's new Smooth outfit?! The next dance was Sergey and Hyeong Temlin. It started off as a Tango with a long blue skirt,
but then wait......................her skirt came off to reveal a sassy little blue outfit with lots of fringe! Her
dance finished off as a snappy Cha Cha! Then for
the last routine, Yulia and Jim Drake danced a very
non-traditional looking Paso Doble. Both were
dressed more like "bikers" then dancers, but had us
singing along to the rock song they were dancing
to! Keep on dancing guys!!!!
Thanks for attending our June monthly USA Dance
here at Rhapsody Ballroom. Don't forget to bring
along some friends next time! See you on the dance
floor!

Community Service Project
By: Jackie Blount, Vice President
Our chapter has embarked on a very special mission
to help supply ballroom gowns, shoes, evening bags
and accessories to The Belle of the Ball Project. This
project’s motto is “No girl should be denied the opportunity to attend her high school dance because
of financial difficulties”. Belle of the Ball Project is a
501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization which provides
homecoming and prom dresses to in-need, low income high school girls. Girls are referred by school
guidance counselors, teachers, churches, non-profit
organizations, foster care the guardian ad litem system and other civic organizations. The anonymity of
the girls is highly guarded.
This wonderful project was founded in 2003 by
Susan Schwartz who during the years has provided
over 4,000 gowns to girls in Tampa, Clearwater, St.
Petersburg and surrounding areas. The entire project is operated by volunteers and all gifts and donations go for the girls.
What you see in this display is just a sampling of the
96 gowns, 24 pair of shoes, 22 handbags and assorted necklaces, earrings and bracelets donated by
our dancers along with the participation of Blissfully
Yours, a unique boutique owned by Patricia Norris
who donated several new gowns. All of the gowns
are dry cleaned by Sun Country Cleaners at their
many locations, free of charge, as their donation to
the project.
We are so proud to be a part of this worthy endeavor
and plan to continue participating in the future.

DANCE YOUR WAY TO A SMARTER BRAIN
Medicine that dance can be a powerful way to improve brain health. Research focused on the effect
of dancing on the brain. It measured factors such as
memory, sense of well-being, serotonin, and stress
levels.
The study showed that while exercise is good for
your overall health, only one exercise (the study included other exercise like swimming and biking and
cognitive exercise like crossword puzzles) had the
biggest impact when it came to improving overall
cognitive skills. That exercise, you guessed it, is frequent dancing.
Flowing is an article about how dancing improves brain
function. Taking these facts into consideration, Nancy
Egbert started thinking about organizations in the community that could benefit from a simple form of dance,
Line Dancing.
There is such an organization in Lakeland that is a Clubhouse concept developed to meet the needs of persons who
suffer with a chronic mental illness. The Clubhouse (Club
SUCCESS) offers “on-hands life skills,” such as banking,
cooking, cleaning, media, computers, etc. There is an opportunity for Line Dancing to be taught, not only as a
great form of exercise, but also as a healthy life-style alternative.
Mike Johnson agreed to make Nancy a CD full of Line
Dance music and she took up the challenge of teaching
Line Dancing at Club SUCCESS as “Dancercise.” The recipients are responding positively to the dance and want to
continue.
This dance environment offers fun, socialization, laughter,
and all kinds of health benefits for our brains! If you want
to learn more, Nancy teaches Line Dance every other Friday from 1:30pm – 3:30pm at Club SUCCESS.
See you on the dance floor!
Scientists found that dancing combines many beneficial facets as we age including recreational benefits
and creative thinking. Dancing holds clues to health
benefits such as stress reduction, increased serotonin level and a love of life.
It turns out dancing incorporates several simultaneous brain functions like rational thinking (keeping
step with your partner), musical sense and an emotional well-being. How does dancing actually improve brain health? Dr. Joseph Coyle, a Harvard
Medical School psychiatrist who commented on the
new study said the cerebral cortex and hippocampus
of our brains are very elastic which means they
“rewire” themselves after each use. Dancing helps
rewire the brain.
Other studies have shown that areas of the brain
most affected by aging can be engaged, rewired and
utilized before they are lost. We know that many areas of brain tissue exhibit plasticity, which means
these areas, are not set in stone. The stimulation
resulting from dancing can engage these areas in a
positive way.
If you try new things, like dancing, researchers say
you are opening up new pathways in the brain that
improve mental capabilities. If you keep many brain
pathways active and simultaneously generate new
pathways, this will help maintain your brain’s health
and fitness.
If you’ve ever watched ABC’s hit TV show “Dancing
with the Stars,” then you know that dancing is hard
work. Dance of has long been known as being an
excellent way to stay physically fit. But could there
be mental and cognitive benefits to dancing as well?
Recently, a major study from Albert Einstein College
of Medicine reported in the New England Journal of
The more you work out your brain, the better you’ll
be able to process and remember information. Novelty stimulation, like learning a new type of dance, is
essential to exercising the brain. The point is to
challenge the brain and stimulate those pathways
for long-term, better brain health.
We are creatures of habit, and there is nothing
wrong with doing what we are good at doing. If
you’re a passionate chess player, don’t stop, but try

Still Dancing

An autobiography
CHAPTER 26
Weathering the Great Depression
On October 26, 1929 Mrs. Moesner had a gathering
of children at her home to celebrate another birthday—mine. I was proud and happy to be a big girl of
eight and the same age as Sally and Tootsie—only
two months younger.
Since Halloween was just a few days away, the
young at heart Mrs. Moesner, had decorated her
apartment in colors of bright orange and black. We
let out happy shrieks when she carried out a bundle
of costumes for us to wear. The boys went to put on
their costumes, and each one came out taking a
bow. Tony was a sailor, Louie was a clown, and Bert
was a pirate. Then the girls paraded out. Sally and
Tootsie were gypsies and Jean was a witch. Because I
was the “Birthday Girl” Mrs. Moesner had me wear
two costumes. I was Cinderella, wearing a tattered
and torn old dress. At her signal I let my frazzled
looking costume crumble to the floor and I stepped
out of it wearing a beautiful blue gown, glittering
with silver sequins. Mrs. Moesner quickly put a sparkling crown on my head and dramatically announced
to the other children “Now you have seen the before
and after Cinderella.” Bert strutted to the piano
while Mrs. Moesner and the other children formed a
circle around me and sang the Birthday song. Then
we seated ourselves around the table and in the center was a large Birthday cake glowing with orange
candles. Another wonderful memory—I was a Princess for a day!
Seven weary but happy children rode down Mrs.
Moesner’s apartment elevator, each one carrying a
little candy filled pumpkin. I made believe that
someday my pumpkin would turn into a horse-
drawn carriage, taking me to the “King’s Ball” where
I would find my own Prince Charming. All I needed
was a glass slipper!
In the meantime Woolworth was filling its shelves
with Halloween decorations. Jack-O-Lanterns smiled
out of neighbors’ windows and children anticipated
going “Trick or Treating.”
Then the unexpected happened. Three days after my
eighth birthday and two days before Halloween the
“Great Depression” came in like rolling thunder on
“Black Friday” October 29, 1929. People were in a
frenzy that we children did not understand. It was
the worst day in Wall Street History. The stock market had crashed. It was the end of the “Roaring
Twenties” which had been a period of unprecedented prosperity. Many people lost their jobs and
thousands of farmers lost their land. Soup kitchens
to feed the hungry were set up. People were depressed and feared that America would have to get
used to a permanently lower standard of living.
I was too young to feel the effects of the Depression. I don’t remember ever feeling poor. My mother
fed us her homemade bread, pizza and pasta. Dry
beans soaked overnight in a big pot of water and
the next day we’d have a supper of pasta e fagioli—
macaroni and beans, made even tastier with the addition of sautéed garlic and onions with a sprinkling
of grated cheese.
My father never found it necessary to close down his
barber shop, even when the customers let their hair
grow a little longer before coming in for a haircut.
Now Papa had more time to read the daily paper. In
the evenings he’d relate to my mother the history
that was unfolding around us.
The “Great Depression” continued. In 1930 Herbert
Hoover was the President of the United States. In
1932 Will Rogers tried to raise our spirits with his
humor. That same year Franklin D. Roosevelt was
voted United States President. My parents were
proud when, five foot, two inches tall, Fiorello LaGuardia, an Italian-American, became New York’s
Mayor.
In spite of the turbulent times our lives continued
without much change. My parents and relatives
were glad to be living in America and counted their
blessings. They were positive thinking immigrants
who could still sing, dance and be merry while
stretching a dollar.
My little brother was soon enrolled at Public School
(Continued on page 10)

(Continued from page 9)
(Continued from page 8)
89 and like myself, looked forward to sessions when
Papa helped him with his arithmetic homework.
Now that Tony was in school Mama had more time
on her hands and was pleased when Mr. Mirelli
asked her if she’d like to work in his dress factory.
The Depression had not ended and Mama was glad
to earn the extra money.
something new, too. When you memorize new
dance steps, you stimulate seemingly unconnected
neural pathways—important for good health as you
age.
At lunchtime she’d walk to the barbershop to give
Papa a sandwich and some fruit. Then she’d return
to the factory to enjoy the rest of her lunch hour
with Aunt Annie and the other seamstresses. I often heard her repeat to Papa the English words that
she had learned from the American girls at the factory.
After school, Sally, Tootsie, Tony and I walked home
together. When we arrived at the factory Aunt Annie’d greet us with milk and cookies. Then we went
to be hugged by Mama who was seated at her sewing machine. She’d give us a small bundle of belts
made of the same fabric as the dresses she was sewing. With a thin metal rod we learned to turn the
belts right side out. It was fun for Tony and me to
sit on the floor behind Mama’s chair, and turn belts
as fast as our little fingers could go. We wanted to
help Mama complete her bundle of dresses, and
best of all, Mama paid us one penny for every ten
belts we turned.
n later years Tony and I still remembered Mama so
vividly, sitting with bowed head, guiding the fabric
with her strong hands under the machine’s needle,
and always with a song in her heart. Turning belts
for Mama was a labor of love that would always be
another one of our fondest memories.
HAPPY DANCING!

I love that Peg makes our entertainers do these fun
shots after they’re done dancing. You can tell what
kind of mood they’re all in after their performance.
Jong remains as calm and classy as usual, Sergey
clearly had to work way too hard and needs a nap, and
everyone else remains energized and could probably
do it all again right away!
Be sure and check out Tracey’s report from the
