Highlights 2014 I Newsletter I Issue # 13 - 2014 -‐ 1 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I Ramadaniyat Beirutiya… Makhzoumi Foundation Festival in the Holy Ramadan The Holy Month of Ramadan is a special occasion at Makhzoumi Foundation. Since its inception in 1997, the Foundation has been celebrating this month by carrying out a variety of social and humanitarian activities at its centers in addition to distributing food rations in Beirut and the regions, as well as “Mawaiid El Rahman”, providing hot meals to tents located in different Lebanese regions, in-kind assistance, and visits to the elderly houses. This year in July 2014, and as in the past two years, the Foundation continued with its initiative to consolidate all the activities at one place, "Sahat Al Takaful" in Beirut/Verdun, under the title "Ramadaniyat Beirutiya", where thousands gathered from different regions to share the joy of Ramadan, stressing the values of unity and sharing. This… in addition to the real festival of the month “Ramadaniyat Beirutiya” Souk, which was held for the second year at Biel / Beirut and was launched under the patronage and in the presence of Mrs. Randa Berri and Ms. Lama Salam, with the participation of Mr. Fouad Makhzoumi and his wife, Mrs. May, the President of Makhzoumi Foundation, and prominent political, diplomatic, social and media figures, in addition to representatives of NGOs and civil society bodies. Embassies, NGOs, designers, painters and others participated in the Souk, displaying their products and activities. And what made the “Souk” a real festival is the entertainment program that was carried out throughout the four days, attracting thousands of visitors: Sufi Music, religious songs, fashion shows, storyteller, the Singer Aline Lahoud, Puppet Theater and recreational games for children, in addition to live cooking sessions. The visitors of the Souk had as well the opportunity to know more -‐ 2 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I about the customs and traditions and the rich culture in Beirut by visiting the Art Bazaar, where quite a number of Lebanese designers, painters and sculptors displaced their creative work. -‐ 3 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I -‐ 4 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I The "Sahat Al Takaful”/Verdun received as well adverse activities under the scope of "Ramadaniyat Beirutiya"; health campaigns before noon, and different entertainments in the evenings after Iftars, besides daily Mawaed al Rahman which lasted through the holy month. -‐ 5 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I The Ramadan evenings included: “Mawalid Ramadaniya”, performances and games for kids by “Mazito” Group, Puppet Theater, as well as the funniest sketches with "Abu Salim and his group", bringing joy and cheerfulness to the visitors of Sahat al Takaful. -‐ 6 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I Moreover, the Foundation also prepared, within its Ramadan Program, a charity project entitled "Thawb Al Eid" at a special corner of “Sahat al Takaful”, where several institutions, companies and even families offered clothes to needy people ... The Foundation provided as well a valuable collection of Eid clothes as a contribution to this humanitarian initiative which gives the Eid a special meaning of solidarity and empathy. _________________________________________ Awareness…"The first step to change" Under the scope of the Project "Promotion of Maternal and Child Health and Psychosocial Well-Being of Displaced Communities and Lebanese Host Communities” implemented by Makhzoumi Foundation and the Italian NGO “Armadilla”, several awareness sessions were held during July 2014, at the Foundation’s center in Mazraa. These sessions addressed different key topics: Stigma and discrimination against people infected with HIV, Child Rights, Child Nutrition, Stigma and discrimination against people addicted to drugs, Self esteem, Gender discrimination, Social communication and Benefits of breast feeding. -‐ 7 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I Sharing the Joy of Eid al-‐Fitr On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, the Makhzoumi Foundation Hair Dressing trainees visited on July 23 the Islamic Elderly House, providing the women elderly haircuts and coloring in addition to skin and nail care. They made a round on all rooms and offered token gifts, drawing a smile on the faces of the residents. The House Administration thanked the Foundation for its services and humanitarian initiatives… _________________________________________ How to Make Marzipan… The Department of Handcrafts and Environmental Arts at our Foundation organized a training workshop on making Marzipan, on July 19, at the Foundation’s Center in Mazraa. This Workshop is one of the sixteen crafts sessions provided by the mentioned Department to those interested in learning crafts in a short time, a day or two, whereby the trainers introduce them to the secrets of the craft, and train them on how to do it. -‐ 8 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I The Closing Ceremony of MOSA Environmental Club The Foundation attended the closing ceremony of the Kids Club of the Development Services Center - Musaytbeh, affiliated to the Ministry of Social Affairs that was held at the Service Center, and which received a number of the children who have been visiting the club from October 2013 till the end of June 2014. Noting that during this period, our Foundation has been providing these children with sessions on making environmental handcrafts from solid household wastes. The Foundation distributed as well token gifts to the children of the club. _________________________________________ Women Leaders against Corruption In the framework of the Project "Engaging Women Leaders in the fight against Corruption", the Foundation participated in a workshop on the dangers of corruption in the public sector. The project is based on collecting the experiences of 75 women from the academic sector, the public and private sectors, with aim of discussing their experiences in facing corruption and its hazards in these sectors. -‐ 9 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014 Highlights 2014 I Relief and Humanitarian Services Unit Services Provided to Syrian & Non-Syrian Refugees MF & UNHCR July 2014 A General Overview In the year 2012, the Makhzoumi Foundation signed an agreement with UNHCR to support the Refugees as a result of the war in Syria; noting that previous agreements had been signed regarding refugees of other nationalities (Iraqis, Egyptians….) In addition to the regular health and humanitarian services provided to the refugees, different activities were organized during July 2014: Awareness Activities Awareness sessions were held for Syrian refugees on different topics, during July: - The Makhzoumi Foundation continues, in collaboration with the International Orthodox Christian Charity (IOCC) to carry out periodic awareness lectures for women refugees on the importance of breastfeeding, baby and child nutrition, and family planning. - Adverse awareness sessions held by the Foundation: • • • • • Two sessions were held on Gender Discrimination A session on Social Communication A session on “Child Nutrition”, benefiting was given to 62 Refugees Two awareness sessions were held on self-esteem A session on drugs, benefiting 55 Syrian refugees (males and females) MF- Lebanese Red Cross Partnership The Makhzoumi Foundation has partnered with the Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) to conduct social activities on Humanity Value and Principle, Youth and Health and Environment, in addition to recreational activities for kids, over a period of 9 months extending from July 2014 to March 2015. -‐ 10 -‐ Makhzoumi Foundation E-‐Newsletter 2014
