In the Loir Valley, meadowed
landscapes set the style
A magical light, singular places, the art of sleeping in fine bed linen and never getting bored ...
Unlike its namesake (“loir” is French for dormouse), the LoirValley does not rest on its laurels! A discreet
paradise, full of colour, 40 km to the north of the LoireValley with beautiful meadows and typical villages …
Taking a green trip along the Loir is like discovering a secret: surprising, delightful and revitalising. A land of
inspiration for artists, with appetising regional cuisine and Bohemian secondhand goods fairs …
A place of spirit and romance, where anything is possible …
As you turn these pages, discover it - festive, curious, enthusiastic, gourmet, dynamic and serene...

Making a Success
The Loir Valley
holds a thousand treasures: hillsides
carpeted with vineyards, typical villages,
splendid châteaux and churches with
frescoes, the Tors belltowers …These
are the places not to be missed, the
ones that you absolutely must see.
Of your stay
La Flèche
Nestling on the banks of the Loir on the edge of Anjou, the
Sarthe’s second city combines the pleasures of water with
those of its architectural heritage. The surprising Bruère
Mill, which manufactures ice, or the fabulous theatre «de la
Halle au Blé” are good examples, as is the Prytanée National
Military Academy: a city within the city.
Unusual: It is a little known fact that the Fléchois, in the
17th century, headed to the distant shores of America led
by Jérôme Le Royer de la Dauversière and contributed to the
foundation on 18 May 1642 of Ville Marie, which is now the
second biggest French-speaking city in the world, Montréal.

Baugé en Anjou, Push open the doors of time …
It is said that in Baugé, on the stairway of the castle leading to
the private apartments, the footsteps of the lord of the manor
can still be heard. King René came here to hunt and to feast..
So come and listen to the secrets of a king in a unique setting.
Contact: Château de Baugé

Don’t miss a legend of a different sort, that of the Anjou cross.
This goldsmith’s masterpiece, brought back from the Holy
Land during the Crusades, is said to be a fragment of Christ’s
true cross. Today, it can be admired in La Girouardière Chapel.

Apothicairerie in Baugé
The 17th century “apothicairerie” or apothecary’s store in the
Hôtel Dieu is undoubtedly the best kept secret in the Baugeois
region. With its woodwork, starred vault and marquetry floor
listed as a historic monument, this apothecary’s store is
considered to be one of the finest in France.
On its Louis XIII style oak shelves stand 650 apothecary pots,
pillboxes and jars in wood, earthenware, glass or pewter.
Most of them still hold products from days gone by. An age
in which sickness was treated with “billy goat’s blood”,
powdered woodlice, crayfish eyes or mummified human
fingers.

la Flèche Zoo
*
* An incredible trip to
The oldest private zoo in France charms with its location at the heart of a pine forest, its
impeccable cleanliness and the presence of rare animals (giraffes, elephants, polar bears,
etc.), with a host of events and shows throughout the day

A whiff of mystery
Strange… In the Angevin sky, there are some odd belltowers. Belltowers of deep blue slate,
pointed, but above all twisted! A feature specific to the Baugeois region, the twisted belltowers
can be discovered with the help of a free itinerary, available from the Baugeois Tourist
Office T. 02.41.89.18.07 - www.tourisme-bauge.com
There is also a very fine book (in French): “Clochers Tors d’Europe”, on sale at the Tourist Office,
price €30
Strolls of yesteryear in Durtal
With the town as the setting, lines carefully written and impeccably interpreted, every other
weekend in July Durtal city centre becomes a theatre for itinerant players focusing on the
destiny of a character from history. With the 3-knocks starting signal at Place des Terrasses, the
curtain rises majestically in the Château courtyard. This original concept never fails to generate
a standing ovation.

* Look, here’s a masterpiece! *
Over and above its imposing appearance, Le Lude is
above all a site with a heart, which is evident throughout
the tour. Indeed, it is one of the rare grand châteaux
that are still lived in, cared for by the family which has
occupied it for the past 260 years.
Four in one! The château bears witness to four centuries
of French architecture, as a defensive fortress transformed into an elegant and sumptuous residence
during the Renaissance and in the classical period.
Children and adults alike are still enchanted by the
maze, the stables and the underground passages, all
nice surprises along the way.

Racan, at the crossroads of centuries and trails
Far from the hustle and bustle of urban living, Racan countryside is a model of
all things natural. This is a place to recharge your batteries. Here, all of nature
reveals itself. The place inspires many emotions, starting with the collegiate church
of Bueil, a surprising edifice which took five centuries to build, or the Abbaye de
la Clarté Dieu, a Cistercian abbey where the fascinating remains take you back to
another era.

In the footsteps of the poet Racan
Perched on a rocky promontory, Château de la Roche Racan offers a remarkable
panoramic view over the Escotais valley. With its tower, refectory, bedrooms and
dining room, this richly furnished chateau evokes the life and splendour of a 17th
century stately home.

A little corner of Italy in the Loir Valley?
Behind its look of a medieval fortress, Château de Bazouges sur le Loir has a gentle
and poetic air about it, doubtless thanks to its Italianate gardens and the magnificent theatrical cedar planted in the days of Charles X.

*They’re mad !
c
mad about heritage Her name is Julita, she’s a sculptor. Her husband’s name is
Patrick, he’s a cabinet-maker. They’re both mad about heritage.
They caught the bug in 2002 when they bought Clarté Dieu,
or a 13th century Cistercian abbey in Saint-Paterne-Racan, in
the Loir Valley .
Patrick and Julita then moved in, without any running water
or power supply, and set to work. Stone by stone, room by
room, they cleared and dug to bring this jewel of medieval
architecture back to life. The abbey gradually came to light.
They have opened the site to the public and organise events,
including a music festival in July. An association of friends of
Clarté Dieu is soon to be created:
www.abbaye-clartedieu.fr.
The Abbey refectory must be saved
It is one of the site’s most iconic elements. The hall with its
ogival vaults in a square, in the purest Cistercian style, may not
survive the winter ...
Caution, masterpiece in danger!
With the support of the VMF foundation, an appeal for donations
was launched at the end of 2013 with the “Mad about heritage”
campaign, and succeeded in collecting €15,000, just enough to
support and protect the refectory from bad weather.
The scene has been set: it’s up to you to write the script!

* Did you know ? *
3000 gold ecus and 800 years of history:
Clarté-Dieu is a Cistercian abbey founded in 1239 by Pierre des Roches,
bishop of Winchester. Just before he died, Pierre gave the Abbé of
Cîteaux, Guillaume de Montaigu, the sum of 3000 gold ecus to build
a Cistercian monastery. The first monks came here in 1240. At its
peak, the abbey housed almost 120 souls. The Abbés then succeeded
one another for several centuries until the Revolution. In 1791, the
monastery was sold as the nation’s property. The last five monks
were ordered to leave the premises and the abbey was handed over
to the demolishers. All that then remained was a third of the original
buildings, which were used for farming purposes during the 19th and
20th centuries until 1990. The abbey remained abandoned until it
was taken in hand by the Moussettes.

* The Bercé state forest *
Carnuta, Take a walk in the
woods…
A jewel among French forests
In this space dedicated to fun and learning, just a
stone’s throw from the National Forest of Bercé,
Carnuta, the centre of people and the forest,
takes you into a world steeped in history and
legend.
The work of two creative architects, CARNUTA
consists of two spaces: one is dedicated to
temporary exhibitions, very much in phase with
the changing seasons, while the other Invites
you to take a walk in the heart of a reconstituted
forest where you discover sounds, images,
fairytales, stories and smells!!!
The Forest has so much to tell you…
Carnuta now has a tourism and disability
accreditation (for people with motor, mental and
hearing disabilities).
The Romans in their day boasted of the splendour of
the Forest of Bercé. Exceptional natural heritage, a
home for indigenous fauna and flora, the state forest
extends over 5,400 hectares. Be it pine or oak, the
Forest of Bercé produces timber that is much sought
after, particularly from oak trees that are over 200
years old. It is an ideal place for hiking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding.
Guided tours on request.

* Miton The Manager and Naoko, *
the chef !
People travel for miles to eat here, how do you
explain this reputation?
Miton: we have been in Chahaignes for 11 years now,
and the address has become well known to many people
from the Sarthe and neighbouring départements, not
forgetting the Parisians, British, Belgians and Dutch in
the region.
We try to give our clients an enjoyable time with
Naoko’s “home-made” and seasonal cuisine using
local produce (vegetables, cheeses, etc.) and the wines

Ô Prestige in Baugé en Anjou
In Baugé, all talk is of young chef Yohann Fouineau, 29 a worthy heir to the
masters who trained him, from Robuchon to Piege and Ducasse …
In his restaurant Ô Prestige, he combines simple and refined dishes,
showing a preference for seafood, with a delicious turbot and asparagus
or a flavourful John Dory with truffles, and mushrooms.
All in a setting full of history, also offering the option of sleeping in one of
the ten hotel bedrooms above the restaurant…

le Moulin des 4 Saisons :
You are recognised by gastronomic guides such as
Michelin, Gault&Millau, etc. How have you achieved
this level of distinction?
CC: Firstly by discipline at work and by using quality
produce. I believe that you must be passionate to do
this job. When I meet the producers on the market in
La Flèche or elsewhere I always focus on the idea of
introducing our guests to new tastes, new flavours.
I like to produce eclectic cuisine based on tradition and
using seasonal produce.
In the preparation, cutting, seasoning, cooking and
search for harmonies, my aim is to enhance the product
without distorting it, to do just what is necessary, in a
way that is my signature.
Every day with my wife Karoline and our team we enact
a play. The kitchens are backstage, then there’s the
stage, with the actors in service. I like this idea and
working in this way comes naturally to me.

in saffron producers
Is the Loir Valley in the process of becoming the new El Dorado for saffron producers?
This ancient crop (cultivated in France in the middle ages) is making a strong comeback. It has won over Marie,
Thomas and Christine in Daumeray, Jean-Louis in Lavernat, Sylvia Hay in Ruillé-sur-Loir and Joël and Elise in Neuvyle-Roi. They are all members of the Touraine Saffron Growers’ Syndicate. The crop is planted in July and harvested
in October. Open days are organised in October to explain this original crop. Don’t hesitate to go to local markets
to taste specialities (foiegras, gingerbread, honey, jams, nougat...) that are as unusual as they are delicious.
From one end to the other of our beautiful valley, this crop has become a must!
Melting chocolate
Our chocolates have an excellent reputation. Prytanéen,
Pierre du Château (100% cocoa butter), Les Gourmandises
d’Henri or again Pavés d’Echemiré speciality chocolates,
are all very popular examples.
Great pâtisseries, such as:
Choupette apples,
taste the real thing!
The result of a hybridization programme, the Choupette
apple is a cross between 2 flowers from varieties chosen
for their technical and health characteristics. It is a crisp
apple, full of character, with a flavour that is both subtle
and strong.
The Choupette is a real “terroir” apple, since its climatic
adaptability means that it cannot be grown everywhere,
making it a good example of an environmentally friendly
approach. It is also very attractive, with all the advantages it
needs to win over the French consumer: balanced, healthy,
full of vitamins, rich in vitamin C, firm and good for keeping,
excellent in cooking for desserts or to accompany main
dishes.

Poultry Chicken, guinea fowl and
duck
Fare an integral part of the Loir Valley’s gastronomic
heritage. With an excellent reputation for their fine flesh,
these poultry varieties are bred and fed on the farm. Some
top species have given our valley its reputation: “la poule
de La Flèche”, a hen with black plumage and a double crest
in the shape of a horn on its head, or again the “géline de
Racan”, a chicken with a longstanding reputation as one
of the finest old breeds of French poultry.

Les Rillettes :
A veritable institution in the Loir Valley!
Rabelais was already praising them in 1546 in his “Tiers
Livre“. Made from pork or goose meat and cooked in the
fat, they were traditionally made twice a year at “pig-killing
time“. They are best eaten simply, on a good slice of lightly
toasted bread. Today butchers and charcuterie makers still
make their own “rillettes maison“, lovingly cooked for 7 to
8 hours.

Would you like a little more cheese?
In this vast world which is the universe of cheese, there are
many local stars, starting with goat, slightly creamy or dry
according to the producer, and farmhouse-made cow’s
cheese.
Whether you choose ash-dusted, garlicky or peppery, you
will just love it!
As for the cheeses from Gaec Le Pis Qui Chante, organic
producers who have just arrived in Villaines sous Lucé,
they are absolutely divine - they are still getting their name
established but are well worth a detour.

Markets, a tradition to share:
Whatever the day, there is always a market nearby.
Starting with La Flèche, every Wednesday morning. It stretches
from Place de la Libération to the banks of the Loir and is the
second largest market in the département in terms of number of
stalls (around 200).
A place for encounters and exchanges, it perpetuates the tradition
of an ancestral trade that resists and adapts to different forms of
retail business. Today it is an essential means of acquiring fresh,
healthy produce. Here you will also find clothes, furniture, flowers,
and more. In a friendly atmosphere, discover all the wealth of our
region.
Enjoy the market!

Old grape varieties & young talents!
There are still some small vineyards that have survived thanks to the talent of a few
people attached to their land. To find them simply move away from the banks of the great Loire river to explore the
Loir Valley. Here, the climate, the soil and the grape varieties all favour wine production: Coteaux du Loir
(AOC since 1948), Jasnières (AOC since 1937) and Coteaux du Vendômois (AOC since 2000) share the limelight.
* *And We’ve done it again! the Loir Valley keeps its label! * *
Launched in 2009, the Vineyards & Discoveries label
aims to promote tourism on the theme of wine and
vineyards.
It is awarded for a 3-year term by the ministers responsible for
tourism and agriculture; the LoirValley had already obtained
it in 2010 at the same time as prestigious destinations such as
Burgundy and Cognac.
In 2013, we did it again!
Proof of the excellent motivation and determination of the
accredited partners to offer you high quality services such
as personalised advice, discovery of the vineyards and the
universe of wine in specially adapted premises of character,
a selection of accommodation and restaurants, all committed
to giving you an unforgettable stay.

In my Garden *
Poetic or ordered, intimate or grand, our parks and gardens attractively complement
our lovely Loir Valley.
A multicoloured
Day
A bucolic morning
Start this sensory journey in the gardens of Château du Lude.
It’s a pleasure to stroll on the grand terrace overlooking the
Loir and the formal gardens, punctuated by topiary. Beyond
the river stretch vast agricultural grounds. In the 18th century,
a second terrace was created, the garden of Eperon. It
features a box maze and a rose garden where China roses
bloom from April to December. The British influence can be
sensed in the delightful small garden of perennials, around a
Chinese-inspired pavilion, called “Jardin de la Source”. Water
spouts in a grotto, reappearing in the Loir. Returning to the
Château, by a path bordered with beech trees, you can see
a hundred-year-old kitchen garden on three levels: rare fruit
and vegetable varieties are still grown here.
On 13 and 14 July and 15 and 17 August 2014, don’t miss the
kitchen garden and gourmet days with exceptional access to
the vegetable garden and planned events in the medieval
kitchen of the château..
The sun is already high in the sky. To cool you down the
Italianate garden of Château de Bazouges-sur-le-Loir offers
you its lush greenery with harmonious stretches of water, a
focal point of the setting.

A botanical afternoon
Enthusiasts and those curious about botany have a date at the
Garden of la Fontaine Blineau at Saint-Vincent-du-Lorouër.
Imagine a plant paradise, where botany and poetry are linked
with every step you take, while respecting the environment. It
was created in 1999 in an 18th century farmyard and has been
constantly evolving ever since.
Continue your trip at Château des Gringuenières, La Chapelle
d’Aligné. A 17th century historic monument, this stately home
is still intact.
The grounds are in the spirit of its day, with perspectives,
alleyways, hedges, flowerbeds, a pond and century-old
trees, providing a good example of classical unity based on
regularity of layout and simplicity of effects.

A poetic evening
When the shadows lengthen, the romantic gardens at Château de Chambiers come into their own - the
linden tree cloister, the herb garden and the park where an awesome pedunculate oak has reigned for
nearly four centuries..
In its green theatre, suitable for a playlet, the Garden of the Château of Poncé-sur-le-Loir awaits you.
A magnificent tree-lined avenue leads to a maze inhabited by green spaces. Here, in this secret place
that feels like an alcove, you almost expect to see a powdered and bewigged figure appear. Evening is

For a fine end to your outing, discover the garden of Vauboin Priory, in Beaumont-sur-Dême. In fact this
is not one but two gardens, designed by Thierry Juge who has made them the work of a lifetime. It all
started twenty years ago when he fell in love with a 14th century house, superb, vertical, at the foot of
a limestone hillside. Water from a spring flowed all around it. Built by monks at the end of the Middle
Ages, then reworked, it has welcomed writers and philosophers.
Around the priory Thierry has created a “Hortus Conclusus”, a medieval garden enclosed by sublime
walls of chestnut logs and vine cuttings. A symphony of greens punctuated by touches of white: myosotis,
clematis. “The box, symbol of eternity, is omnipresent here”. To the east, an orchard and a kitchen
garden “for earthly nourishment”. To the west, a cloister and a maze “for meditation, spirituality”. Four
years ago, he acquired the hillside - “pierced” by a cave - against which his property stands. Under a
covering of oak appears, almost miraculously, a cascade of box.
Thierry, wearing a safety harness, abseils to prune his favourite trees. A top garden, wild and woolly,
created by his sculptor’s hands: “here you have a magical view over the enclosed garden, as though
paradise is twenty metres below you”.

Arts in the countryside (Durtal, Baugé en Anjou, La Flèche)
Every third weekend in October (18 and 19 October 2014), local artists invite visitors into their creative world. They reveal the secrets of their plastic talents. Artists,

a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
Cultural barriers are set aside and dialogue is immediately established.
These encounters lead to warm and constructive exchanges, during which the imaginary is faced with concrete perception.

Or at the famous “Flea markets, Antiques, Artists”
exhibition organised on Sunday 27 April, 6 July and
24 August 2014 in La Chartre-sur-le-Loir.
For the past 12 years, this event has attracted
professionals from diverse backgrounds (secondhand
goods dealers, sculptors, antique dealers, artists,
etc.), to the delight of visitors and bargain-hunters.
Its success is undoubtedly thanks to Armel Labbé,
president of the “Association Brocante, Art,
Patrimoine” (ABAP), a well-known antique dealer
in La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, especially as he is an expert
curio-hunter! It’s not hard, the LoirValley is full of
hidden treasures!
Free entry from 9 am to 6 pm

In La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, you can do your secondhand
shopping in shops with very different atmospheres,
separated by a few streets, before going back home
with your basket full of unique pieces to give as gifts
or to keep for yourself ... Looking for the rare pearl, a
mirror, a pretty lamp or a “made in the Loir Valley”
accessory?
It’s possible and even recommended, by going to see
the must-visit Armel, a real enthusiast and expert who
has contributed to the French magazine “Antiquités
Brocante” on Sarthe furniture.
Come shopping in the boutique and workshop
run by Anna, an upholsterer and decorator who
has developed a passion for secondhand goods,
and unearth the perfect gift ... From the outside,
it is impossible to guess what lies within. Once
past the entrance with its old furniture, a series of
rooms presenting an eclectic mix of multicoloured
fabrics and materials, cosy furnishings and arty
pictures await antique-hunters. The mistress
of the premises pampers, repairs, offers a new
lease of life to objects and gives expert advice on
the history and maintenance of her “protégés”.
Les semailles,
your new artisan tailor!
In this shop on the village square, discover items
that illustrate, with simplicity and elegance and in an
updated manner, the inimitable charm of our country
houses. From the carpenter style corduroy jacket to the
clay pie dish and garden objects, the range is bound
to delight you. A recent workshop now tailors shirts,
trousers or household linen for you, from carefully
selected fabrics. Quality is a top priority, as with the
home-baked cakes (raspberry macaroons, oven crisp
apple cakes, etc.) served in the tearoom in the heart of
the shop or on the terrace in summer.
