The Student Princes own a 35-31-1 advantage in the all-time series and have won the last two meetings against the Crusaders by a combined score of 100-13. Capital ranks among the top 15 in NCAA Division III in three statistical categories - fumbles lost (2, T-11th), sacks allowed (0.50 per game, T-13th) and passing yards per completion (16.33, 13th). The Crusaders lead the conference and rank 18th in the nation in fourth-down defense, allowing opponents to convert just 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) of fourth downs. Heidelberg moved up one spot in the D3football.com Top 25 following last Saturday’s 68-17 victory over Marietta. The ‘Berg is No. 10 in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The Student Princes rank No. 1 in the country in scoring offense with 60.3 points per contest. Heidelberg is second in the nation in total offense with 564.0 yards per affair. The Crusaders were downed 54-0 at then-No. 24 John Carroll on Saturday. After an interception by junior defensive back Anthony Cicione ended the Blue Streaks’ opening drive, Capital, after being held to a three-and-out, was tackled in the end zone on its punt attempt for a safety. John Carroll found the end zone on the first play of the ensuing drive and held a 37-0 advantage by halftime. The Crusaders completed just one pass during the contest. Freshman quarterback Chase Longwell and sophomore b-back Bo Hardy led the offense. Longwell rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries, while Hardy totaled 19 carries for 59 yards and a reception for 12 yards. Junior linebacker Wesley Meadows and senior defensive back Domenic Hebebrand led the defense. Meadows tallied a team-high 14 tackles, while Hebebrand registered 11 stops Capital was ranked or was receiving votes in the D3football.com Top 25 for eight straight seasons from 2003-10. The Crusaders peaked in the rankings at No. 3 to finish the 2006 season, when they reached the NCAA quarterfinals. Scouting the Student Princes: Qualified for the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 2012 ... rolled up 629 yards of total offense at Marietta last Saturday ... junior QB Mark Mees, a third-year starter, has thrown for 966 yards and 14 TDs this season ... junior RB Cartel Brooks leads the OAC in rushing yards (465) and touchdowns (7) ... sophomore PR Ryan Fischer leads the nation in yards per return (28.5) and touchdowns (2) ... sophomore LB Will Lance leads the defense with 31 tackles CAPITAL PRONUNCIATION GUIDE Coach Craig CANDETO.................can-DEE-toe Travis BOSANAC..................... buh-SAH-nick Domenic HEBEBRAND........... RAU GUILLEBALDO Cepeda........ gui-yah-BALL-doh Capital at Heidelberg - Saturday, Oct. 12 Mayer Field - Tiffin, Ohio Capital’s Record When: GAME NOTES CRUSADERS IN MIDST OF TOUGH STRETCH Capital is in the midst of a stretch of facing three opponents ranked in the D3football.com Top 25, including two on the road. Last Saturday, the Crusaders were defeated 54-0 at No. 24 John Carroll. Today, the team faces No. 12 Heidelberg and next week, barring a major upset loss at Wilmington, will host the defending national champion and top-ranked Mount Union. Capital coach Craig Candeto said a brutal stretch like this is par for the course in one of the country’s top Division III conferences. “There’s no need to panic,” Candeto said. “We knew coming into the year that we were going to play some very good football teams. It just so happens, they’re back-to-back-to-back. We have a tall task ahead of us, but our goal is to get better. We’re going to continue to work. “I told our guys that these are the games you want to play. This is why you play college football, to get the opportunity to play Top 25-caliber teams.” KEYS TO VICTORY One of the team’s main goals this week is to keep Heidelberg’s offense, the nation’s top scoring offense and league’s No. 1 total offense, off the field. “I think that’s our goal every game, is to keep our defense off the field, but especially this week,” Candeto said. “They want to play basketball on grass ... if we can move the ball and get first downs, hopefully we can slow them down a little bit by not having their offense on the field.” Candeto said the team’s ability to rebound from adversity will also be critical to playing well. “The guys were frustrated on Saturday, and rightfully so,” Candeto said. “To me, character is built in times of adversity. I’d like to see how our team responds.” ONE FOR THE AGES In one of the most memorable games of the past five years, Heidelberg and Capital tangled on Oct. 2, 2010, at Bernlohr Stadium. The Crusaders outlasted the Student Princes 60-50 in what can only be described as an offensive slugfest. The two teams combined for over 1,200 yards of total offense and combined to punt just three times in the contest. Heidelberg scored on three passing plays of more than 35 yards and totaled 569 yards through the air during the game. Capital controlled the clock, holding the ball for more than 37 minutes, including more than 22 minutes in the second half. The Crusaders iced the game with 2:49 to play when Kory Hartinger plunged in from one yard out. Three seniors on the current team - Jason Hutchins, JJ Litman and Alex Nydza - played in that affair. OHIO ATHLETIC CONFERENCE LEADERS Senior slot back Alex Coleman ranks third in the OAC in both all-purpose yards (120.75 per game) and kickoff return yardage per attempt (21.2). He now ranks No. 5 all-time in kickoff return yardage with 922, just 15 yards behind Kevin Wehby for fourth. Freshman QB Chase Longwell is currently fourth in passing yards per completion (18.0) and sixth in rushing yards (279). He is the lone quarterback among the top six rushers in the conference. Freshman DL Luke Scott is tied for third in the league with two sacks. The OAC is the nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in its focus on the entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s unparalleled success of all its members on and off the playing field has made the OAC one of the nation’s finest college conferences. The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The OAC is older than the Rose Bowl, the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the 2012 OAC FOOTBALL mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities Final Standings at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently, OAC Overall the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin Wallace University, Team Mount Union*#^ 9 0 15 0 Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Heidelberg# 8 1 9 2 Marietta College, the University of Mount Union, Muskingum Otterbein 7 2 8 2 University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Baldwin Wallace 6 3 7 3 Wilmington College. Case Tech’s football team won the OAC’s first conference title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The OAC currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. All 10 of the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference teams and athletes consistently have enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs, academic values that make the OAC one of the finest conferences in the nation. Craig Candeto, a former standout Division I quarterback, Navy fighter pilot and assistant coach, was named the program’s 11th head coach in December. He inherits a team that posted a 2-8 overall record, including a 2-7 mark in Ohio Athletic Conference play, in 2012, the first time in more than a decade that the Crusaders finished with less than five wins in a year. Capital returns 32 letter winners to the fold this fall, including several student-athletes with starting experience and both kickers. Senior quarterbacks Ryan Kremchek (Sylvania) and Alex Nydza begin the preseason as the front runners to work under center. Kremcheck threw for 461 yards and three touchdowns a year ago, while Nydza ran for 134 yards and passed for 263. The starting quarterback will likely be joined in the backfield by sophomore running back Bo Hardy (Galloway), who was named honorable mention All-OAC after finishing fourth in the league in rushing yards per game (67.6). Overall, Hardy ran for 608 yards and scored a pair of touchdowns (1 rush/1 receiving). The Crusaders also return their top wide receiver in senior Alex Coleman (Columbus), who finished with 36 receptions for 528 yards and three scores. Coleman, who placed fourth in the conference in all-purpose yards (1,252) last year, is also the team’s primary punt and kick returner and is nearing school records in both categories. Capital is also set to return three starters on the offensive line, including seniors David Howson (Hudson) and Anthony Colucci (Ashtabula). Defensively, the Crusaders return three-fourths of their starting secondary and a pair of starters in their linebacking corps. Senior defensive back Domenic Hebebrand (Hinckley) is a 2011 All-OAC honorable mention recipient and is the team’s top returning tackler. Hebebrand registered 67 stops, including 9.5 for a loss, and posted one interception and a forced fumble in 2012. Junior Adam Gammell (Silver Lake) also returns as a starter in the defensive backfield. Junior linebacker Matt Tash (Painesville) emerged late last season as one of the team’s top defensive players. Tash finished the year with 42 tackles, three sacks, an interception, a fumble recovery and a fumble forced. Sophomore linebacker Bryant Bokovitz (Gallipolis) also played his way into the starting lineup last season and looks to continue his strong play this fall. Junior kicker Travis Bosanac (Strongsville) led the OAC with 10 field goals, including a long of 49 yards, in 13 attempts a year ago. He led Capital in scoring with 43 points. Junior punter Joseph Riley (Twinsburg) averaged 37.0 yards per punt and pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 11 times last season. The Crusaders kickoff the season on Saturday, Sept. 7, against Thomas More (Ky.) at Bernlohr Stadium. Following a bye week, Capital travels to Marietta for its OAC opener on Sept. 21. The team hosts Ohio Northern on Sept. 28 on Homecoming Saturday at Capital. After playing four of the next five on the road, a stretch during which the team’s lone home game is against defending national champion Mount Union (Oct. 19), the Crusaders close the season with consecutive home games against Muskingum (Nov. 9) and Wilmington (Nov. 16).
