Location: Peldon Road, CM19 4HT This tablet includes the names of 10 people who fell in the First World War. Twenty-nine servicemen are named on this memorial tablet which hangs in St. Mary’s Church. Location: Corner of High Street and St. Johns Avenue, CM17 0DT & WAR Location: The Gowers, CM20 2JP GRAVES 13 St. Mary at Latton Church IN MEMORIALS This memorial was dedicated at a remembrance service held on 3 September 1989. The memorial consists of a bronze plaque mounted within a base of bricks. Behind is a boulder of Dover chalk. The plaque records the names of 22 men who died during the Second World War. WAR to c o mmem o ra te the 16 Ward Hatch Pr od uc ed 6 Rosemary Close Garden Memorial There are three tablets within the Church which is now known as St. John’s Art & Recreation Centre. One tablet, with 74 names on it, is located on the right hand side wall of the main entrance. Two memorial tablets after each War were erected in St. Mary’s College in Old Harlow. The tablets honour 57 Old Harlovians who fell in the wars. When the College was demolished the tablets were preserved and put up in St. John’s Church. HARLOW The institute, which originally opened in December 1920, is located in Garden Terrace Road, Old Harlow. On an outside wall of the institute is a tablet with the following inscription: ‘Harlow War Memorial Institute Erected by Public Subscription as a Memorial to Harlow Men who gave their lives 1914-1918’. Location: Market Street, CM17 0AJ 12 St. Mary’s Church, (Great Parndon) c e n t e n a r y The memorial was unveiled on Sunday 16 May 1920. The cross, which is erected in a prominent position on the common close to the main road, is Celtic in design and stands 12ft in height. It was made by J Day and Son and was restored by the same company in 2014. Thirty-one names from the First World War are on the memorial and two were added after the Second World War. Location: Garden Terrace Road, CM17 0AT 9 St. John’s Church W a r The memorial cross was unveiled on Sunday 30 May 1920. Nine names from the First World War appeared on the memorial with two more names added after the Second World War. In 1950 the cross was moved, as part of a highway development scheme, to the position it now occupies. Location: The west side of London Road near its junction with Harlow Common Road and Elm Avenue, CM17 9NG 5 Harlow War Memorial Institute W o r l d Location: The junction of Kingsmoor Road, Three Horseshoes Road and Paycock Road, CM19 4HB 3 Potter Street, Latton and surrounding district Memorial Cross F i r s t 1 Great Parndon Memorial Cross Location: Mowbray Road, CM20 2NB Memorial bench for Private Robert Foster who was killed in Afghanistan on Thursday 23 August 2007. 2 Netteswell & Burnt Mill Memorial Cross Location: Within Harlow Town Park, at the junction of School Lane and Park Lane, CM20 2QD The memorial cross was dedicated on Sunday 1 February 1920. Thirteen names from the First World War with five more names added after the Second World War. In 2010 two plinths were added to the memorial garden for commemorating members of the Armed Forces who have lost their lives in active service since 1945. In November 2010 the names of four servicemen were unveiled on one of the plinths. 4 Old Harlow Memorial Cross Location: Northern edge of St. Mary’s Churchyard, Churchgate Street, CM17 0JT The memorial in St. Mary’s Churchyard was unveiled on Sunday 18 April 1920. The memorial is in the form of an old style Celtic Cross made of granite and is 11ft. in height. MEMORIAL TABLETS We Will Remember Them 7 St. Mary’s Church Location: Churchgate Street, CM17 0JT There are two memorial tablets in the Church. One was erected after the First World War and has 74 names on it grouped according to Regiment and listed in order of rank. A second tablet was unveiled after the Second World War with the names of 22 Harlow servicemen arranged according to service. 10 Old Harlow Baptist Chapel Location: Fore Street, south side of Seeleys, CM17 0AB These memorial tablets were unveiled on 9 January 1921. It is situated on the wall facing the congregation. The 74 names on the tablet are arranged in regiments according to rank. LOCATION OF PRIVATE MEMORIALS 5 Harlow War Memorial Institute Location: Garden Terrace Road, CM17 0AT 7 St. Mary’s Church Location: Churchgate Street, CM17 0JT 14 Harlow Study Centre (formerly St. Andrews Church) Location: Netteswellbury Farm, CM18 6BW 15 St. Mary’s Church Little Parndon Location: Parndon Mill Lane, CM20 2HP LOCATION OF WAR GRAVES 8 Methodist Church Location: Mulberry Green, CM17 OET This tablet, which was unveiled on 6 February 1921, is situated in the centre of the East wall inside the church. 11 Oddfellows Location: Park Hill, CM17 0AB This tablet was erected after the First World War to commemorate 40 people. It is situated above the porch of 10 and 12 Park Hill in-line with the first floor windows sills. Number 6 to 16 Park Hill were formerly Odd Fellows Terrace. One hundred and twenty men died during the first conflict and 32 during the second. These men are either buried or commemorated in many places around the world. They are also commemorated in Harlow on four memorial crosses, various tablets in churches and chapels, by a War Memorial Institute and a Memorial Garden, along with a variety of Memorials to individuals. Those who died in service of their country since 1945 are remembered on the Netteswell Memorial Cross in Harlow Town Park.
