The past several months have been very active for the West End Association (WEA), and that high level of activity has carried forward with a variety of events and collaborative programs being planned. On Saturday, January 24th, WEA will host its first Health and Wellness Expo, held at the new Bristol Boys and Girls Club on West Street, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Many local healthcare providers and health benefit organizations will participate in this event, which will include free screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, dental, vision and body mass index, as well as yoga and massage demonstrations. We’ll have mascots from local sports teams and a variety of special guests to answer healthcare-related questions. Our goal is to make sure West End residents have easy access to healthcare education, screenings and local wellness resources that can benefit them and their families immediately and throughout the year. Indian Rock Summer Day Camp Bristol Blues Baseball June 9 -August 14, 2015 AT MUZZY FIELD Our Taste of Bristol tickets are already on sale. This is our primary annual fundraiser, and at $5 each a great bargain . . . it saves you and your family 20 percent off the check at more than 30 local restaurants during March. The more you eat out, the more you save, and everyone who purchases a ticket is entered in a raffle, as well, with dozens of gift certificates to be awarded. We’re still glowing from our successes of 2014, especially our Rockwell Park Summer Festival in August, which attracted 10,000 visitors, and our Fall Social at Indian Rock, which raised funds for Indian Rock and for a new WEA program to help local veterans with home repairs. Additionally, our community garden was well received this summer and fall, with many vegetables donated to local food banks, and we installed and will be maintaining new planters at the intersection of Routes 72 and 69. Congratulations to the Bristol Boys and Girls Club following their move into beautiful new facilities on West Street, and to Oak Hill’s Chapter 126, Sports and Fitness, which opened its new rehabilitation and sports center on Upson Street. And finally, we welcome the Bristol Blues, the newest expansion team in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, which will call the newly renovated Muzzy Field its home, with games beginning in June. We continue to meet every second Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Our meetings are open to members and non-members alike, and we encourage you to attend, join, hear what’s going on in our City and have a voice in your community. Please visit our Facebook page and website, as well, to stay informed as the year progresses. Finally, thanks to the many sponsors who helped pay for this newsletter, which we publish twice a year. As always, I welcome your thoughts and comments. Please write me at westendbristol@gmail. com, and note that five people who respond with feedback or suggestions will receive a free West End Association gift package, based on a feedback raffle.
