Hollywood Memories

Under the Big Top
I decided this month to write about a film
I did in 1952 called “The Greatest Show on
Earth.”
It won the Oscar that year for the best
Motion Picture. The movie was directed by
the legendary Cecil B. DeMille. It starred
Charleton Heston, James Stewart, Cornel
Wilde, Betty Hutton, Dorothy Lamour and
Gloria Grahame. Interestingly, the role of Angel, played by
Gloria Grahame, was originally supposed
to be played by Lucille Ball. She had to
decline the role when she found out she was
pregnant with her first child.
That’s me, sitting under the Big Top with
“Buttons the Clown,” portrayed by Jimmy
Stewart. At the time I of course, didn’t know
he was Jimmy Stewart; but talking with a
clown was great fun for me. I also might add
that he was extremely nice to me.
Now even though Cecil B. DeMille was
considered to be one of the most famous
directors in history (he was also nominated
that year for best director), the film, although
loved by many, has also been considered one
of the most unworthy films to have ever won
an Academy Award.
There was a famous scene involving
a train wreck. The scene was filmed in
miniature and was considered extremely
innovative for it’s time. It was highly regarded
as one of DeMille’s greatest achievements. If any of you have seen the film, you’ll
probably agree that it does look
real; especially considering this
film is almost 60 years old!
It’s been said that it was the first
film that Steven Spielberg saw as
a child and that it was a major
inspiration which led him into
film making.
Now although I only had a small
role, I loved every minute of it and
as I became an adult, I realized
just how fortunate I was to have
been directed by Cecil B. DeMille.
I’m going to share with you
something that was pretty funny
on the day we filmed my scene. As
I’m sure you all know, the word “Hollywood
Stage Mother” can have a very adverse
connotation and present a virtual nightmare
to cast and crew.
There was a young boy who had been hired

his is a story of two people in
love faced with almost insurmountable
life challenges. It is the story of love,
faith, perseverance and courage in the
face of life-threatening and life-altering
events that occur suddenly and without
warning. She is a nurse stricken with
breast cancer. He is a world-renowned
cardiovascular surgeon.
They had each traveled life’s path until,
in the midst of tragedy and despair; they
find each other and their love. From
the beginning there was a magnetism
between them.
March 11
Then fate interferes. Her cancer
returns, and in desperation, she flees.
He finds her and brings her home, but
then suffers a life-altering brain injury
in a boating accident and Andrea’s life is
turned upside down once again.
Alone and lonely, she begins the long,
arduous journey through the maze of
physical and emotional upheavals, and
the almost insurmountable obstacles she
must face. Forced to follow life’s bumpy
road, she learns the true meaning of love.
Anastacia does not consider herself
to be an author. She does not earn her
living by writing. The story came to her
in a dream in June 2007.
as an extra to sit in the bleachers a few rows
behind me. During the course of the filming
of my scene, suddenly the mother of the
young boy yelled “cut” in a very loud voice.
Obviously, only the director makes that
decision. The “Hollywood Stage Mother”
however, determined that her son couldn’t be
seen by the camera as she felt he was being blocked from view by a man sitting in front
of him - so she took it upon herself to stop
the filming! Needless to say, that didn’t sit too well with
the crew and especially Cecil B. DeMille! The
boy and his mother were promptly escorted
off the set.
I was always proud of my mother as she
always sat quietly in the background and let
everyone do their job.
Until next time, remember… Kindness is a
language which the deaf can hear and the
blind can see.
When she began writing it, she felt the
need to get a check-up. She was soon
diagnosed with breast cancer.
The day after she was diagnosed, she
went to church and listened to the sermon of Rev. Kenneth Harper which dealt
with how to deal with a crisis in one’s
life. She believes she was given the gift of
the story and his beautiful words to pass
on to others through her book.
She believes it is meant not only to
encourage women to guard their health,
but also to uplift their spirit through faith.
Author, Author!
Editor’s Note: This is a mustread book for every woman and
their husbands, lovers, sons,
family and friends.
About the Author: Anastacia was born and raised
in New York. When she married, she lived with her
husband on Long Island
until they moved in 2001,
to Sun City Anthem where
she is a member of the
Veterans Club and
Anthem Authors.
Unfortunately, her
husband passed away
in March. Her book
is dedicated to him
and the love they
shared.

Do You Remember…?
I’ll always remember my dad shaving.
He wore a sleeveless white t-shirt and
stooped over the bathroom sink so old
it had a wear spot from where the water
dripped. He used a shallow bowl and a
funny looking brush that looked more
like a bingo dobber to mix his shaving
concoction.
I was always fascinated how he would
work the lather in that bowl and then
apply it to his face.
Around the neck, then over the
cheeks. Always with special care and
attention to under the nose and chin –
like he was painting.
He picked up the old Gillette chrome razor
that we would steal the blades out of to work
on our model airplanes with.
He unscrewed the bottom, put in a new
blade, tightened it down and went to work.
First up the neck, then under the chin occasionally nicking himself. He was done in
five minutes.
Using a tiny piece of toilet paper, he placed
it over the nick until it stopped bleeding. He

always smelled so good after shaving; it was
the Mennen aftershave he splashed onto his
face.
My mom always seemed happier after he
shaved. I even heard her once say: “There’s
the man I married,” after he shaved off a
partial beard.
Growing up, a clean shaven face was
somewhat expected
Anybody with mustaches or beards were
either Hippies, Hooligans or Frank Zappa.
For the Love of Louie
I always wanted to grow a beard. I had
a mustache and sideburns for awhile,
but I started shaving when I began
working as a standup comic. I always
took after the traditional stand-ups - a
suit and tie. Or at the very least, a jacket
and tie.
It was how I saw my idols – Carson,
Hope, Benny. Even Jonathan Winters
always wore a jacket and tie - except
when he was wearing a dress.
I can still be lazy about not shaving;
sometimes I go two to four days without
one, until recently. I was referred to a
new person to cut my hair. Her name
was Zhane. I was suspicious.
As I walked into Fino’s on Sahara, I was
surprised to see not only a salon, but a full
barbershop and grooming center. I always
wanted to get a shave in a barber’s chair.
I got one 100 years ago, but can’t even
remember how it went.
I got a great haircut from Zhane and on
the way out peeked into the men’s grooming
side.
They had a four-chair setup and everyone
was getting a shave.
“I should try that” I thought. So, I booked
a shave with Uzzie – everyone in this place
has weird names!
I didn’t really know what to expect. As I
sat in the chair, Uzzie quickly took control,
tilted it back, applied some pre-shave lotion
on my face, followed by a hot towel, and for
the next 30 minutes I kept saying to myself,
“Why did I wait so long to get a shave?”
I thought it might hurt. He took his time,
and after taking off the towel, he applied the
lather - like I remember my dad doing.
Also just like my dad, he worked under the
chin first with the straight razor, then down
the cheeks, followed by the chin and finally
ending under the nose. When he finished I
asked if he had any Mennen.
He didn’t. But he used something that
smelled really good.
I’ve been getting a shave every week since;
it makes a difference, my face is smoother,
my smile is better - and I feel closer to my
dad every time.

Our Live Las Vegas
The first time I was introduced to Desert
Shores was when a young mother wanted
me to teach her child swimming lessons; not
an odd thing for a swim instructor.
What made it odd was she wanted me to
teach in the Desert Shores’ lake.
Say What?! Come to find out, there is an
actual swimming spot in the lake with fresh,
performances are scheduled for Saturday the
5th and Friday the 11th.
The first performances will feature David
Cochran and recording star Indeya - then six
days later we get to do it all over again with
the man who keeps the Golden Nugget legit,
Frankie Moreno.
I like that Garfield’s is offering a 50% off
clean water (not sure however if the Health
District would classify it as “clean”).
Another great thing I just discovered about
Desert Shores is its atmosphere. One of
the best spots to enjoy the surroundings is
Garfield’s Restaurant.
I’ll leave the gastrological criticism to
someone who doesn’t view the McRibb as
a gourmet sandwich. But even I know that
Garfield’s organic garden is really impressive
- considering the sea of chain “2 for $20”
eateries populating our fine valley.
They promote an “A Day at the Farm”

Man I’m getting hungry just working these

It is my pleasure to cover Garfield’s offering
of local arts and entertainment. In addition
to the fine dinning, the good folks serve up
some strong Jazz music.
The “Jazz on the Lake” series is backdropped by the beautiful Lake Jacqueline;

What happened when Henderson resident

“Light, frothy and fun.” -The New York Post-
In Neil Simon’s “Rumors”, doors slam and hilarity
abounds. As confusions and miscommunications
mount, the play spins off into classic farcical comedy.
At it’s start, four couples gather in the posh townhouse
of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife to celebrate
their tenth anniversary. When they arrive, they discover
there are no servants, no food, the hostess is missing and
the host has shot himself. Complications arise when, given
everyone’s status in the community, they decide they need
to do everything possible to conceal the evening’s events
from the local police and the media.

My Move to Las Vegas - Part II
After moving to Vegas in 2003 and
getting settled into the tiny condo with
my two dogs and cat, the hunt for work
began. I had been invited to play a few
years earlier for the Grand Opening of
the newly remodeled Liberace Museum,
so I figured that to be a logical starting
point.
I was so surprised when they
remembered me. It also took away some
of that “alone in a new city” feeling.
Having never lived more than 45
minutes away from where I grew up, this
was a huge departure for me.
I ended up volunteering to play the
piano for the tourists and groups visiting
the museum. I met many people, had a
great time and it gave me something to
do.
It was during this time, I was
introduced to the adjoining restaurant that
Liberace used to own, “The Tivoli Gardens.”
Noticing it had a cozy little piano bar (cozy
as in “Liberace-eed”- complete with walls
made of mirror, twinkle lights and a grand
piano-shaped bar), I approached the owner
about performing there. I was told they had
not had regular weekly entertainment for 12
years and were not interested. I thought that
was the dumbest thing I’d ever heard.
So I kept going back and back and back,
It’s cold outside…
What if a water pipe broke?
Restore your home after fire,
water, or smoke damage!
until I finally wore them
down enough to try
me out for a night. It
took a month of going
back and selling my
proverbial “donkey” off,
but it ended up being
a very good decision
for them - and my
persistence paid off.
I ended up playing
there weekly for over 5
years. The crowds grew
to the point of having to
make a reservation for a
table; sometimes months
in advance.
While the restaurant
thing was happening,
I was contacted by
Liberace’s former PR manager, Jamie James,
about entering the “Liberace Play-A-Like”
contest. The thought of entering a piano
competition scared the hell out of me. I
politely told him “no, thanks” without
giving any reason.
Jamie continued to call and call, finally
wearing me down to the point where I finally
told him the deep, dark secret as to why I
kept telling him no: “I don’t read music! I
taught myself to play the piano and I play
by ear! I’ve never been in a competition and
am terrified to be up against trained and
degreed pianists.”
I thought he would understand and
leave me be. Instead, he took the time to
explain that this was not a classical piano
competition – it was a Liberace competition.
Yes, you had to be able to play the piano,
but it was based in large part on the
ability to entertain and be a showman.
Begrudgingly, I accepted and thought I
made the biggest, stupidest mistake possible.

Our Governor, National
Anthem & Taxes
Just a little over four years ago, when
former Governor Jim Gibbons ascended
to the state’s highest office, I was writing for
another local magazine. In my column, I
predicted that the beleaguered, incoming
governor would go down in Nevada history as
one of the most controversial and ineffective
governors.
After a number of peccadilloes and missteps
that made national fodder, this prediction

1965 and was dogged for years for the flub. I
almost became a member of “the club” when
in the 1960s, I was hired to sing the anthem
at a convention at the original Convention
Center on Paradise Road.
Now, our anthem is not the easiest song to
sing so I thought I’d play it safe and write the
words on a card and put it on the podium

producer of the event said he hoped I wasn’t
going to read from a note card as the singer
at the last year’s show did! At that point, I
would have paid anyone double the $45

I paced that convention floor for hours
rehearsing the lyrics over and over again so

front of a standing, silent audience of 6,300.
I can’t tell you how relieved I was when I
hit that last note at the end of the anthem

The man who defeated Gibbons, Brian

I’ll be anxious however, as will most

The show, winner of the 2006 Tony Award

for Best Musical Recording, traces the
history of the sensational singing group
of blue collar boys from the wrong side of
the tracks under a New Jersey street lamp
through their personal and professional

the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They
wrote their own songs, invented their

There are 20 cast members, many of

both outstanding as they alternate in the

the other Jersey Boys, Jeff Leibow as the

as the musical genius Bob Gaudio bring
incredible talent and believability to their
roles as members of the legendary singing
group. The staging wisely learns toward
minimal.

Pisces
Pisces (February 18-March 20) is the last
sign of the zodiac.
It is the one that is closest to the heavens
(or our next dimension) and is probably the
most confusing of all signs. Take a clue from
its symbol: two fish swimming in opposite
directions.
Pisces, along with Cancer and Scorpio,
is a water sign. Water signs are all about
feelings. Whereas the earth signs are focused
on common sense and practicality, and the
air signs are seeking what is logical and
reasonable, the water signs are tapped into
their feelings.
The gift the water signs posses is intuition.
Their lesson is to learn to go with their gut
feelings and to trust their intuition. Reason
and logic will not work for them, but going
with their feelings will lead them to solutions
and answers.
Neptune is the ruling planet for Pisces. It is
the planet of imagination, high creativity,
idealism and dreams.
It’s also a highly romantic planet that
craves that unconditional love. Pisceans
take on these
characteristics
and become
visionaries and
compassionate
self-sacrificers.
When it goes
to the extreme,
they can become
victims.
Most often
Pisceans live for
an ideal greater
than themselves
Whether it is Art, a Cause, or Spirituality,
these factors feed the Piscean high ideals.
Precisely because they are so visionary and
trusting, Pisceans should guard themselves
against fanaticism that can ensue when they
surrender so completely to a cause or belief.
In astrology, the part of the body that Pisces
rules is the feet. Ironically, Pisces is not a
grounded sign; it floats along high up in the
clouds, in the world of ideals and perfection.
Then, when they come down, Planet Earth

Pisces is also a
mutable sign.
Cardinal signs
are do-ers, fixed
signs are staid
and determined,
but mutable
signs are
adaptable and
receptive.
Therefore,
Pisceans, in
general, are easy to be around.
More than any other sign, Pisceans crave an
escape. Spas are perfect, as are sanctuaries,
islands and places by the water. Water is their
element and they respond favorably to it.
A gift certificate for a massage or to a spa
would delight any Piscean’s spirit!
Indeed, Pisces is a complicated sign. One
thing for sure: there’s always more going on
with Pisces than what meets the eye.
They are often mysterious and secretive and
content in their perfect “other” world. Don’t
ever underestimate them. Always remember:
one fish swims one way and the other fish
swims the opposite way.
Famous Pisces: George Washington, Mikhail
Gorbachev, Ralph Nader, Tony Robbins, Anais
Nin, Alan Greenspan, Ted Kennedy, Cindy
Crawford, Ivana Trump, Steve Jobs, George
Harrison, Johnny Cash, Elizabeth Taylor, Jon
Bon Jovi, Rupert Murdock, Liza Minnelli,
Billy Crystal, Bruce Willis, Queen Latifah, and
Nat “King” Cole.

weeks, neither of those seemed like an
option.
Taxi fare was going to be approximately
$80 round trip; not including tip.
Then just by chance, I overheard a
conversation about the “Senior Ride
Program.” I curiously called the Division
for Aging Services.
To my delight and amazement, I found
that under the “Senior Ride Program”
seniors - age 60 and older with valid State
ID, can save on cab fares!
That meant, for me, a round trip to the
airport would cost only $40. Now that was
doable.
Plus think of the other possibilities –
wanting to go to the strip and after an
evening of fun – not having to drive home.
Or, if your car was incapacitated, you still
could get around without having to rely on
family or friends.
How the “Senior Ride Program” works

now, do not expire until June of 2012.
For me this was a life saver. I can’t tell you
how excited I am about saving 50% anytime
I need to use a taxi.
Also in my research, I found that you can
park for free; up to 14 days at various RTC
(Regional Transportation Commission)
Transit Center’s Park and Ride with a city
bus taking you to the airport. This is a great
alternative for parking and getting to the
airport for shorter trips.
The South Strip Transit Center is located
adjacent to the McCarran Airport at Gilespie

Park and Ride is located at Durango and
Westcliff with an auxiliary park and ride at
the Suncoast.
Each center requires you to fill out a
vehicle slip. For additional information, call
the RTC or go on line at RTCSNV.com.
I find that free and 50% off are good things
- hope they are good for you too.

Have you ever wondered who wrote the
popular Irish songs we love today? When
Irish Eyes Are Smiling, Too Ral Loo Ral
Loo Ral, Galway Bay, How Are Things in
Glocca Morra and Who Threw the Overalls
in Mrs. Murphy’s Chowder?
The songs were mostly written by
American composers of Irish descent. These
composers were
often classically
trained,
vaudeville
pianists and
staff composers
for music
publishers
as well as
Broadway
musicals.
How Are
Things in
Glocca Morra’s
composers
were Burton
Lane and E.Y.
Harburg. The
song was sung
in the musical, Finian’s Rainbow - about a
fictional village in Ireland.
Who Threw the Overalls in Mrs.
Murphy’s Chowder, by George Giefer, was
about a Mrs. Murphy who had mistakenly
left the pants in the pot which she had also
used to do the laundry.
Chauncey Olcott, who wrote When Irish
Eyes are Smiling was born in New York. A
movie about his life in 1947 starred the
tenor/actor, Dennis Morgan. Additionally, composers such as
Ernest Ball, Chauncey Olcott, and
Walter Donaldson, who wrote over 600
popular tunes, penned many Irish songs.
These men were inducted into the music
composers Hall of Fame.
Too Ral Loo Ral Loo Ral was written by
James R Shannon, who was born in Adrian,
MI. Bing Crosby sang it in the 1944 movie
Going My Way. It was on the billboard
charts for three months. Galway Bay is a song from Ireland. It
was written by Dr. Arthur Colahan, a doctor
at an Irish prison. He wrote this song in
memory of a brother who drowned in
Galway Bay. Bing Crosby recorded this one, too. It was
also used in the 1952 film The Quiet Man
starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. Probably the most popular of Irish
songs is Danny Boy. One legend about
its origin has it
that Jane Ross, a
historian, heard a
blind fiddler named
Jimmy McCurry
sing and play
Londonderry Air
(as Danny Boy was
originally called) in
Northern Ireland. She asked him
to perform it over
and over until she
had taken down
every note. Jane
thanked him, gave
him a coin and
departed. Jimmy rubbed
the coin against his lips, (his method of
determining the denomination of coins)
discovered it was a Florin, which is a coin
worth much more than the customary
penny he usually received. He set off
in pursuit of Jane, caught her, and told
her that she had given him too much
money. Jane asked him to keep it as a token
of her appreciation.
Later on, a Londoner, Dr. Fred Weatherly,
who immigrated to America, was looking
for a tune that would fit his poem Danny
Boy. Londonderry Air fit the words to
his poetry perfectly. So was born the song,
Danny Boy. The message in the song is from a parent
to a son who was either going off to war or
leaving home during the Irish emigration
to other lands. The song is now considered
an Irish Anthem.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone. Drink
a toast to old Patty, and “may we be in
heaven a day before the devil knows we’re
dead.”

Dr. Heck Goes to Washington
By: Congressman Joe Heck
Few things are as stunning as flying
into Washington D.C. and seeing the sun
break over the Capitol dome. Ronald
Reagan probably said it best when he
called D.C. a “shining city upon a hill.”
I told my wife if I ever lose the chill I get
flying into Washington D.C., or walking
down to the House floor to vote, I won’t
run for another term.
It’s humbling to know I am here as
the voice for the 1.1 million Nevadans
in congressional district 3. My goal is to
serve them. The best way to do that is by
faithfully representing their views through
my votes and actions; both in Washington
D.C., and at home.
Serving others drives me. It’s why I
became a doctor, why I joined the military
and why I ran for office. I look forward
to meeting with Nevadans who visit me
because I want to help.
One of the great things about my office
location is I am right down the hall from
Dean Heller’s office, and three floors
down from Shelley Berkley’s office. That
way, whenever Nevadans are in town, they
can easily see us all.
Some people might think there’s a
rivalry between Democrats and Republicans, but our delegation is very close.
We work together on many issues and sat
together at the State of the Union speech.
That’s how it should be.
At the end of the day, every Member of
Congress wants America to succeed and
be a stronger, more prosperous nation.
That includes Republicans, Democrats
and Independents. The disagreement
comes when we debate which path leads
to a stronger, more prosperous America.
It’s easy to get into office for the first
time and cast blame on others for heading down the wrong path – but that isn’t
leadership. Leadership is about taking
whatever situation you’re in and making
the best of it – react, adapt and overcome.
The path to a stronger, more prosperous America isn’t easy. Progress takes
time and hard work. We must give
businesses time to realize, when we say
we will cut taxes and reduce job-killing
regulations, we follow through.
This path is particularly difficult for
Nevadans because we are the hardest hit
by the current economic crisis. Families
in our state are struggling and have been
for a while, so being patient is not easy.
However, continuing the federal government’s spending binge will only push our
problems onto the next generation. That is
irresponsible, and it isn’t leadership.
The Greatest Generation fought to
protect our freedom from certain destruction. They made tremendous sacrifices to
protect our freedom. Now, it is our turn
to sacrifice. Now, it is our turn to protect
the next generation’s freedom.
The next generation’s freedom doesn’t
face destruction from pure evil; it
faces destruction from a crushing debt.
The debt will end our children’s and
grandchildren’s ability to live what we
consider the American dream.
We must work together to tackle the
debt problem. If we make the tough
decisions today, America’s entrepreneurs
will guide us out of this recession and
our children will inherit a stronger,
more prosperous nation.

What Should the
Legislature do to Improve
Business Diversity?
Wells wrote in an op-ed in the Las
Vegas Sun on February 13th that since
2008, a total of 21 DRI faculty members
left Nevada for positions in other states.
That’s another 21 households of people
who were active in schools, churches,
and other community activities who are
gone. An exodus of active community
members does little to encourage leaders
of corporate America to create jobs here.
With the challenges facing the 2011
legislature, balancing an out-of-whack
state budget while engaging in political
posturing on redistricting; they must
show leadership on diversifying the
economy. They can do that by showing
they understand the desperate need of
our communities to stop the outflow of
civic minded people.
To show that, they’ll need to show
that political leaders are willing to invest
in Nevada.
Governor Sandoval said that if
Nevada was a stock, he’d invest in it.
Well Nevada is not a stock. It’s a state
and community of diverse citizens, and
it desperately needs investors. Those
investors are in Carson City today, saying
too much about what to cut and too
little about investing for the future.
Hard working people helped create an
economic boom here in the first decade
of the millennium, and many are hurting now or have left the state.
While that boom was going on,
Nevada politicians enjoyed the fruits of
lobbyist money and the perks of power;
most building permanent political
careers.
Now it is time for leadership and investment.
An industry and city who ignorantly
dismissed the advent of foreign competitors only to choke on that foreign
exhaust as they whisked past our once
proud factories left the city as we see it
today - gasping for a future and economic
survival.
We must bring a broader, more diversified business audience to Las Vegas – to
strengthen our economic and tax infrastructure, broaden our quality-employee
base and to enhance our overall community. This broader tax base may act to
more stabilize our local economy, and
in turn, stabilize funding of critical local
services - including our education system.
And what of the argument that the quality of our education system is keeping us
from diversifying? Let’s not kid ourselves
– education quality is a critical aspect
of every community; a material driver to
local employer quality and performance
and needs to be a strong consideration
with our diversifying efforts.
However, education is not the only
important driver that makes a medium to
large-sized corporation choose to make a
multi-million dollar investment in our
area. Other drivers may also include tax,
property, and other incentives, addressing of legal business limitations, local
cultural and quality-of-life issues among
others.
And diversification may also induce
a return of some of our children who
have graduated from our high schools
and gone on to a quality college education. What does a young man or woman
getting a degree in chemistry from a
quality college have to look forward to
in Las Vegas?
Gaming and Hospitality are not bad
callings for some, but they are limiting.
Many of our best and brightest find that
there are better places to gain their
experiences after college – better offers,
cities, culture, and life.
We need to diversify (business base)
and improve (K-12 education) – they
are not mutually exclusive, nor are they
linear (one following the other). They
are potential lifelines for enhancing a
proud city of history and experience.
We must plant these seeds today,
and excerpt material efforts to nurture
a brighter future for ourselves and for
generations to come!
million last year into $455 million of
economic activity, it appears that Nevada’s
politicians of 50 years ago knew something about investing for the future.
That’s something the current crop of 63
legislators and the “NO TAXES” governor
could emulate. Instead, Governor “NO
TAXES” has proposed funding cuts that
will hurt DRI.
N
ow that Nevada’s economy is “in the toilet,” the question of
business diversity takes on a new and critical urgency. For decades Nevada politicians
of both parties (mostly Democrats, as Republicans don’t think the legislature should
do anything) lamented the mono-cycle economy here and mouthed platitudes about
diversifying the economy.

A better education system – many say it’s necessary to bring greater

In fact, both sides are correct and we

simultaneously, aggressively and immediately.
The Gaming and Hospitality industries
have been the centerpiece of economic
growth in Las Vegas for decades and
have served us extremely well. But with
the current economic downturn materially proving that these primary industries

with the advent of huge growth in gaming operations around the world, our
city is at a crossroads.
We need to materially broaden our

Now please do not misunderstand. This
is not an attack on Mr. Brown.
He is not the first petty politician
shamelessly pandering to a
small group of people. Rather
than addressing and resolving
a potential problem as a civic
leader, he chose a cheap, easy
way out.
Larry Brown is merely a
prime example as to why politicians are held in low esteem
by the public.
Anyway, to make a long
story short, soon thereafter, there was my
Amy (and yours truly) facing criminal
charges of violating the Las Vegas City
ordinance for delivering unsolicited
materials.
It was quite a scene. There among the
many with their dirty shirts, ripped jeans
and shorts, baseball caps and sneakers
was my better half dressed in the latest
Staley Gretzinger outfit.
The City Attorney carefully explained
the nature and seriousness of the
charges and that besides a monetary fine;
Amy faced a possible jail sentence. In
any event, she was advised to retain her
own attorney.
With that last statement, came the
look. “I don’t need an attorney,” Amy
proudly shot back. Turning to me, she
remarked, “I married one.”
Amy and I refused any “settlement”
(just pay a combined fine of $5,000 one
City Attorney said) and we made it very,
very clear that we were ready to proceed
to trial - and that Councilman Larry
Brown would be our first witness.
A Quiet Voice
David Kretchmar
My Amy also couldn’t help but
remark how ridiculous and absurd this
entire proceeding was. “How do I tell
my friends that I might
go to jail for newspaper
distribution?” she asked.
“You’re right,” I readily
agreed. “Tell them it’s for
prostitution.” She found no
humor in my suggestion.
There we were - me and
my “co-counsel” being
asked a series of questions
by the Judge concerning
our knowledge of self-representation.
I started to raise my hand to interrupt when the Judge inquired if Amy had
any concern about her “mental health.”
“You mean today?” I wanted to ask, but
thought better at the last moment. I had
a hunch she would not be amused.
Eventually all charges against Amy
were dismissed. “You’re free,” I said.
“You beat the rap.” Once again, my Amy
was not amused.
After all these years, I’m beginning to
realize that she has no sense of humor.
I had to promise not to deliver The
Vegas Voice to certain Sun City Summerlin residents for a 2 year period. In
effect, I must continue not to do something that I never did.
No jail, no probation, no fine, no
guilty pleas. How’s that for “justice?”
As for Larry Brown, let me say that
there are no hard feelings. His (non)
actions didn’t change my opinion of him
one bit. It merely confirmed them.
But as for my Amy, well let’s just say
that she’s (still) “looking” for him.

Stu Cooper - Travel Editor
New York, New York
Catchy title for my article this month - New
York, New York.
I just thought it was about time that the
Vegas Voyagers Travel Club offered “East
Coast” options for some of the cruises we
recommend. There are just so many places
one can cruise to when leaving from Los
Angeles or San Diego.
With this in mind, and in connection with
our good friends at Celebrity Cruise Lines,
here are some cruise options from New York
you might want to take advantage of.
As many of you know, Celebrity Cruise
Lines is the premium cruise division of
Royal Caribbean. Their ships and service are
second to none in the cruise industry.
We will be sailing on three of their beautiful
ships, the Celebrity Summit, Constellation
and its newest vessel, the Celebrity Silhouette.
Bermuda is an absolutely great cruise
destination. Pink sand beaches are the norm
and this charming little island offers a
relaxing tropical feel.
The Celebrity Summit will sail August 28th
through September 9th on a seven night
cruise with cruise rates starting at just $929
per person.
The Celebrity Summit will also sail on a
14 night extensive Canada - New England
cruise from New York, October 9 thru October
23rd. Here’s the best part of this cruise: an
overnight stay in Quebec City, possibly the
most French city this side of the Atlantic.
Other ports include Boston, Portland,
Halifax,
and St.

among
others.
Cruise
rates

Our
third cruise from New York is an exotic
Southern Caribbean cruise on the brand new
Celebrity Silhouette.
You can be one of the first passengers to
experience this brand new ship as you sail
from New York to St. Thomas, St. Kitts,
Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Martin.
Cruise rates for this cruise start at $1,525
per person. Air fare to New York from Las
Vegas is extra for all the New York departures.
I know many of our Vegas Voyagers are
from the New York area. What a great excuse
to visit family and friends - and then hop on
a Celebrity cruise.
Finally, for those of you who missed out on
the great Atlantic cruise price on the Royal
Caribbean, Mariner of the Seas, Celebrity is
offering a 13 night trans Atlantic cruise on
the Celebrity Constellation.
Departing from Barcelona on November 20,
2011, the ship will visit Alicante and Malaga
in Spain, Maderia in Portugal and Tenerife
in the Canary Islands before crossing the
Atlantic to Fort Lauderdale.
Prices for this cruise start at $1,999 per
person and that includes the cruise, round
trip air fare from Las Vegas to Barcelona
and back from Ft. Lauderdale and all port
charges, taxes and fees. What a great allinclusive price for this cruise!

most ambitious travel club in Las Vegas, so we
won’t have tours leaving hourly or even daily.
In fact, our goal is quite the opposite.
We want to provide you with personal
attention; so we plan to offer only one or two
Getaways a month.
We are also limiting the number
of people on each tour to only fifty
travelers.
On our Getaways, you won’t feel the need
to cram everything into one strenuous day
because our trips will usually include one or
two night’s lodging in the best hotels or inns.
And our days will start off with what I feel is
a kinder, gentler scheduling - with most of our
departure times set for eight or even nine in
the morning.
Plus, on our trips, we’ll be riding
in luxurious, air conditioned motor
coaches outfitted with private restrooms
and audiovisual equipment for your
entertainment. While you relax, highly
trained professional drivers will be responsible

Even our rest stops are planned to be unique!
For instance, instead of stretching your legs
at a boring gas station, on our first Getaway

It’s All About You
Working on making changes is always
about what you want for yourself. No
amount of pushing by other people really
creates the desire for you to change. You
know what you want for yourself and you
are the one that needs to make the decision
that you want to change and are ready to
take the responsibility to make the change
work for you. Sometimes even knowing that
you need to make changes doesn’t push you
over the edge to be successful.
Maybe that little voice inside of you says “I
really need to do this” but there is still a part
of you hanging onto old behaviors, resistant,
stubborn and proving to yourself that you
“just can’t do it.”
What does it take? It really takes you
finding out what is important to you - and
you alone. It’s not the proverbial “will
power”; it is a decision by you as to what
you really want for yourself, and what you
are willing to do about it.
That’s right - willingness is the key. And
not just saying you are willing, but feeling it
inside and taking responsibility for making
positive choices for yourself.
It’s so easy to stay in past behaviors and
to do what you’ve always done in the past;
but it is really hard to make new choices
and change what you’ve been doing forever
- even when you know that you want to
change.
One of the hardest decisions relates to
smoking. While smoking is only one item to
change by itself, there is a whole world of
behaviors that must be changed. Number
one (and not to be forgotten) is the fact that
smoking is truly addictive. But also, there
are a ton of behaviors that go along with
smoking.
Think about the places where you light
up the most, foods and drinks that you
associate with smoking, what you do with
your hands, friends that you smoke with,
talking on the phone, driving in your car
and so on.
For many smokers, the thought of the
“dreaded withdrawal symptoms” are
enough to end your commitment before you
even get started.
If the pressure of quitting is getting to you
and you really want to change, there is a
way. Maybe you’re thinking about quitting,
but not sure that you can handle quitting.
Perhaps you’ve talked to others who quit
and went back to smoking and you just
don’t know what to do.
I just hinted that there is a way, and yes,
hypnosis is truly the answer if you are ready
and willing to commit to yourself that you
really want to make this change. No drugs,
no patches, just relaxation and a follow up
CD to be used for 30 days.
Each and every issue mentioned will
be addressed in your hypnosis session
- including not substituting food for
cigarettes.
Once you decided that this is really
what you want and you accept that you
can do it; you will be successful. Call me:

Improve Your
Flexibility!
How easy is it for you to turn around and
look behind you before backing out of a
parking space? What about bending down
to tie your shoes or pick up a piece of paper?
Flexibility exercises will help you do all of
this easily!
Stretching or flexibility exercises are an
important part of your physical activity
program. They will give you
more freedom of movement
for your physical activities
and for everyday activities such as getting dressed and
reaching objects on a shelf.
Keep in mind that while
stretching exercises will
improve your flexibility,
unfortunately these exercises
are not for your endurance or strength.
Do each stretching exercise 3 to 5 times at
each session. Slowly stretch into the desired
position, as far as possible without pain.
Relax, breathe, then repeat, trying to
stretch farther.
Safety Issues:
1. Always talk with your doctor if you are
unsure of any particular exercise.
2. Always warm up before stretching
exercises. Stretch before endurance or
strength exercises. If you are doing only
stretching exercises, warm up with a few
minutes of easy walking first. Warning:
Stretching your muscles before they are
warmed up may result in injury!
3. Always remember to breathe normally
while doing a stretch.
4. Stretching may feel slightly
uncomfortable - for example, a mild
pulling feeling is normal.
5. You are stretching too far is you feel
some pain. Reduce the stretches so that it
doesn’t hurt.
6. Never “bounce” into a stretch. Make
slow, steady movements instead. Jerking
into position can cause muscles to tighten;
possibly causing injury.
7. Avoid “locking” your
joints. Straighten your legs
when you stretch them,
but don’t hold them tightly
in a straight position.
Your joints should always
be slightly bent while
stretching.
You can do this easy
stretch which can help relieve tension in the
neck. This can be done while standing or in
a chair:
1. Keep your feet flat on the floor, shoulderwidth apart.
2. Slowly turn your head to the right until
you feel a slight stretch. Be careful not to tip
or tilt your head forward or backward, but
hold it in a comfortable position.
3. Hold this position for 10-30 seconds.
4. Turn your head to the left and hold the
position for 10-30 seconds.
5. Repeat at least 3-5 times.
In future columns, I’ll give some
additional flexibility exercise. Remember,
the more flexible you become, the less likely
you will fall or become injured!

You’ve Fallen & Can’t
Get Up
How scary would that be for any of us to be
in that situation? Osteoporosis is a very real
disease and it doesn’t appear to be
going away.
Half of all men who get a hip
fracture will die within the first
year. Half of all women who get a
hip fracture will never walk again.
Everyone in our society is
susceptible to osteoporosis. Onethird of the cases are men. So what
can you do to protect yourself?
Stop smoking and drinking alcohol
excessively! You knew that one already.
Nothing good comes from that.
Limit your consumption of caffeinated
beverages to only one cup per day. Caffeine
increases calcium loss from bones.
Three cups of coffee will lose
approximately 45mg of calcium. I know
some of you love your diet sodas, but is it
really worth it?
There are several classes of medications
that increase your risk of fractures: Antidepressants, anti-seizure medication,
diuretics, corticosteroids, and antacids
(zantac, pepcid, prilosec, etc).
If you are taking
any of these
medications, you
definitely should
be taking these
supplements
(pharmaceutical
grade of course)
for bone health:
calcium, vitamin D, boron, magnesium,
manganese, zinc, and vitamin K.
Additionally, make sure your levels of
testosterone, estrogen and progesterone are
optimal. If they are not, make sure they are
optimized with bio-identical hormones.
Have a DEXA scan to measure bone
density, and urine dpd (deoxypryridinoline)
to measure bone strength.
Lastly, exercise, eat lots of fruits and
vegetables and manage your stress!

Reverse Mortgage: An Important
Financial Option
There are many factors in today’s society
that have made reverse mortgages more
popular; and more necessary. People are
living longer than ever before and spending
more time in retirement. At the same time,
they tend to underestimate their retirement
savings needs.
“When it comes to retirement, you need
to be ready for anything and everything. A
reverse mortgage can possibly help many
people remain in their home, be more
financially independent and live a more
fulfilling life,” says Mary Anne Van Liere,
reverse mortgage consultant for MetLife
Bank.
So, what exactly is a reverse mortgage?
Simply put, it’s a loan that allows
homeowners aged 62 and older to tap into the
equity that’s been built up in their home.
The homeowners can then use the proceeds
in a variety of ways; such as covering monthly
living expenses, making improvements to
the home or paying for prescriptions and
healthcare.
There are other important benefits
as well:
The borrower continues to own and live in
the home; even if one of the co-borrowers
passes away. Of course, the homeowners
must continue to pay property taxes, have
homeowners insurance and maintain the
home; but the proceeds from the reverse
mortgage can be used to pay for these routine
expenses.
No repayment is required until the borrower
sells the house or does not live in the house
for more than 12 months. When the house
is sold, the loan is repaid along with accrued
interest. If the borrower leaves the house for
more than 12 months, such as for a stay at
a nursing home facility, then the loan also
30
becomes due.
There are no monthly payments required
Although there are no monthly mortgage
payments, interest accrues on the portion of
the loan amount disbursed.
And while the funds received from a
reverse mortgage do not impact regular
Social Security or Medicare benefits, certain
needs-based benefits, such as Medicaid and
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may be
affected. Prospective borrowers should contact
their tax professional about their specific
situation.
A prospective borrower can still qualify, even
if he or she is still paying on a conventional
mortgage. The proceeds from the reverse
mortgage will be used to first pay off the
existing mortgage.
Closing costs can be rolled into the reverse
mortgage itself, so there’s no immediate
financial impact to contend with.
Borrowers have a choice of how they receive
their proceeds, based on their needs and
preference. They can choose: A single lump
sum payment; monthly income for a long as
they live in the home or, if they prefer, for a
specified period of time; a line of credit they
can draw on as needed or; any combination
of these options.
MetLife Bank offers free, educational
materials, including a comprehensive
information kit and video to consumers
who may be interested in taking a reverse
mortgage or would like more details. For
more information about a MetLife Bank
reverse mortgage, contact Mary Anne at 702326-0558.
“A reverse mortgage can make all the
difference, and help you to live a better today
and be more prepared for the future,” notes
Mary Anne.

Trust a Fiduciary to Act
in Your Best Interest
You may have heard the term “fiduciary,”
but do you really understand what it
means for your finances and investments?
Are there big differences between a
With a fiduciary advisor, the client’s

fiduciary and a non-fiduciary advisor?
Absolutely! And the difference is you.
A Fiduciary has a legal obligation to
act in your best interests, above his own
and those of his firm. All fiduciaries must
adhere to these principles of the advisorclient relationship:
1. Be competent and excise due care.
2. Loyalty to the clients.
3. Full and adequate disclosure.
A fiduciary advisor carefully assesses
your financial situation and recommends
a diversified portfolio that serves your
financial goals. The fiduciary advisor will
start with what’s important to you - from
retirement planning, income planning,
and preservation of capital concerns;
then come up with a plan that meets your
comfort level with investment risk.
They also analyze your insurance needs
and assess the impact of taxes.
A 2007 federal court ruling helped clarify
the distinction between financial planners
and advisors and non-fiduciary advisors
fee-based advisors affiliated with broker/
dealers.
The court ruling ended an exemption
from the Investment Advisor Act of 1940
that had allowed broker/dealer-affiliated
advisors to charge fees and call themselves
financial planners and investment
advisors while not being held to a
fiduciary standard of conduct.
When dealing with our firm, you don’t

we will strive to go above and beyond that
obligation!

Important Tax Changes
Late last year, Congress decided to be
productive and passed some important laws.
Over the next new issues, we are going to
cover how you can plan to take advantage of
these new laws.
Increase in the Estate Tax Limit: Under
federal law, if you have a high net worth,
your property and assets can become subject
to an estate tax. This estate tax threshold has
gone up in the recent past and is now set at
$5-million through 2012.
Anything below this amount is not subject
to the tax. You will pay a 35% tax on any
amount above this level.
But be aware that after 2012, the threshold
reverts to $1-million and the tax increases to
55%. As this amount includes life insurance
proceeds, real property, retirement and
investments, without some caution, your heirs
could easily end up paying a lot in taxes.
Now you know how Congress intends on
paying off the deficit.
This estate tax is very unfair because you
have already paid taxes on this money. So,
if you are in a high tax bracket because you
have
made
good
money
in your
life, you
have
already
paid up
to 36%
in income taxes on this money.
If you have money in an IRA or 401(k),
you still owe this income tax. Now add the
estate tax to the income tax already paid (or
still due) and you could end up paying taxes
upwards of 91% on any money in excess of the
estate tax limit after 2012.
Of course, there are ways to organize yourself
to avoid this result, but more than half of the
Graham Stand
population of those who could be impacted by
these laws do nothing! This is what Congress
is relying upon – the half of this population
that decides to sit back and do no planning at
all. Inaction of an impacted population is the
way Congress will lower the deficit.
According to a resent Credit Suisse Report, by
2015, there is going to be a transfer of wealth
between generations of nearly $500-billion.
Congress wants its share of that transfer to cut
down its debt.
Who Should Be Worried? If you have an
estate over $600,000, then you must see
an estate planning attorney. Even though
the amount you have may be less than
$1-million, it is close enough to do more
aggressive planning. This is especially true if
you have most of your assets in tax deferred
retirement accounts.
In my next column, I discuss why you need
to see an attorney to do your estate planning.
Call it self-serving, but experience has shown
me that only those possessing a law degree are
actually qualified to provide these essential
services.
You wouldn’t get your dog neutered at a
barber, would you? Likewise, attorneys are
uniquely qualified and trained to help you
navigate the laws related to estate planning.
Go to the phone book. There are a gaggle of
qualified souls who would gladly help you for
a reasonable fee. If you still have doubts, read
next months’ column and you will be “scared
straight.”

Great Deals on RV’s &
Motor-Homes
The local economy and current fuel prices
have forced a number of under-utilized
motor-homes, travel trailers and RV’s out
from their
storage lots
and onto
the market.
The array
of makes
and models
available
showcases
low miles and lots of upgrades.
The most popular manufacturers include
the Fleetwood and Airstream of 26’ or
larger; banks taking “short sales” and
private sellers dumping their vacation
vehicles to encourage consumers to buy
now.
Buyers report savings of over 40% on some
makes and models. Private party sales also
save thousands in sales tax.
Purchasing from a dealer requires sales
tax unless you show proof of out-of-state
residence. Financing on pre-owned motorhomes is scarce, but those with good credit
may find RV loans at local credit unions for
100% of the NADA value.
If you have never owned or even
driven a RV, rent one for a weekend
before you buy.
For those interested in selling
their RV, here are five points to
consider before listing it for sale.
1. Have all the service done and
replace anything failing or worn.
2. Wash and clean inside (and out) before
taking pictures.
3. Create a comprehensive list of all
upgrades - including aftermarket options.
4. Take pictures in a clear area with
minimal distractions.
5. Carefully evaluate your price before
advertising to be sure you are competitive.

Fee-ding the Bottom
Line
I just returned from North Carolina after
visiting my mother. I had the pleasure of
personally delivering her copy of The Vegas
Voice and the now famous “pickle girl”
Consumer Voice article ( January 2011).
By coincidence it also happened to be her
80th birthday so we were able to celebrate
that as well.
Many of our readers and especially
Vegas Vacationers/Voyagers Travel Club
members know how frustrating air travel
can be with the myriad of “fees” that
airlines now charge. We have $35-50 bag
fees, fees to sit in an exit row, fees to change
your ticket, etc.
Most airlines charge for food if they still
serve it. If you ask me, they should pay you
to eat it. Why not just raise the fare instead
of charging all those fees? Marketing.
Airlines know that people usually shop
for the lowest fare, but not the total cost of
travel. They lure you in with what looks
like a low fare but hit you with the fees
when you check-in for your flight.
Consumers are wising up to it, but for the
most part, accepted the practice. Southwest
is one airline that has actually used the
airline fees to their advantage.
Their “bags fly free” promotion has been
a huge success. I personally liked to fly
Southwest because they didn’t have these
obnoxious fees – until now.
I went to check in for my flight the
day before I was leaving, only to see
something strange. It seemed that I could
get a preferred boarding pass only if I was
willing to pay an extra $10 per ticket.
I didn’t, figuring that I would still get a
good boarding pass since it was exactly 24
hours before
my flight.
My number?
B-34!
Apparently
quite a few
people are
willing to
fork over a
few extra
dollars.
Airlines
aren’t the
only ones
playing the
fee game.
Many hotels
have added
“resort fees” that charge you for services whether you want them or not.
When you shop prices, you don’t see the
$5/day fee for the safe you don’t need or
the $1/day for the USA Today. Some hotels
charge you for internet access, even if you
don’t want or need it as part of that resort
fee.
Often those fees can be removed from
your bill if you decline the service but only
if you tell them ahead of time. Of course
they don’t ask you if you want it in the first
place; it’s buried somewhere in the fine
print.
One charge that grates on me is the socalled “convenience charge.” My sisters
and I took my mom to see a play for her
birthday.
The tickets were a very reasonable $34
per seat but there was an additional charge
of $7.75 for the “convenience” of picking
them up at the box office. Exactly who is it
convenient for?
These fees are here to stay since
consumers just grumble and accept them.
There would need to be a huge public
outcry to get rid of them. I wonder what the
fee would be for that!

Caring for Your Pets
Providing for the care of your loved ones
can be one of the most important things
that you do. This is especially important
for your loved ones with four legs, scales or
feathers.
Having a comprehensive estate plan is
important for many reasons. You work your
whole life for your assets typically to pass
them on to your heirs or beneficiaries.
But what about your pets that you care for?
If you don’t have any specific plans for the
care of your pets, you are literally relying on
the generosity of others to care for them.
If no one takes them, they will be taken to
the pound and, at best adopted or at worst
euthanized. There are many simple ways
you can provide for the care of your pets and
other beneficiaries.
You can set up a trust so that all of your
loved ones are taken care of. By having a
trust your assets avoid the probate process.
You transfer your assets into your trust
which typically you have complete control
over during your lifetime. Then your
appointed trustee takes over the trust after
you are gone. The
trustee will divide
your assets according
to your direction.
Not only does a trust
save your assets for
your heirs, you can
literally reach out
after death with a
trust to control the
actions of your heirs.
For example if you
want your grandson
to go to college
before he inherits
from your estate,
you can specify that
in a trust. These types of trust are called
incentive trusts.
You can also make specific provisions in
your trust for the care of your pets. We call
these pet trusts.
Thus you are designating a certain
individual to take your pets and provide for
their care. Additionally, the successor trustee
can keep an eye on your pets to confirm that
they are being well cared for by their new
guardian.
Finally, it is very important to set up
powers of attorney for yourself. Powers
of attorney allow your designated
representative to make decisions for you in
case of emergencies.
Even if you already have these documents,
it is important to have them revised every
few years so that they are current with new
state and federal guidelines, or to take your
current pets into account.
These are just a few types of estate
planning tools that can be implemented
by a licensed attorney to shelter your assets
and protect your pets. You should consult a
lawyer and develop a plan that helps you to
keep the assets which you have worked so
hard to procure.
If you would like to discuss your options,
please do not hesitate to contact me at 4884962 to set up a free consultation.

Life After 50
Carole Halford
Family is Everything
It’s often difficult to make new friends after
a certain age. Try fifty.
Most of us are set in our ways. We have
routines. We go on vacation to visit the
grandkids, enjoy nights out with our oldest
and dearest friends or just kick back with a
pay-per-view movie.
Then one day, the tsunami hits in the form
of a recession or depression as some call it.
With the current economy, we’ve all had to
make adjustments. Many households have
opened their homes to their children to offer
shelter, guidance and emotional support in
these difficult times.
Due to lost revenue, bad investments or
lack of incoming business to sustain them,
the corporations have had to make huge
cutbacks. They slash jobs. Delete entire
departments to stay afloat or go bankrupt.
Most companies obviously prefer staying
afloat. Why? The bigwigs don’t want to loose
their cushy jobs, year-end corporate bonuses
or their annual board meetings in Maui
Their answer: layoffs.
So, the wife or husband (or both) become
the scapegoats of big business greed, poor
management or greedy managers.
When they
loose their
jobs, sweatinducing
fear sets in.
They can’t
pay their
mortgage
payments,
or car
payment or
to even buy
groceries.
What do they do?
It’s a painful decision. But one that had to
be made. They call their parents. Luckily,
many have loving, supportive mothers and
fathers who open their homes and their
hearts.
But it takes an emotional toll on everyone
involved. The ones who have lost their jobs
are fragile and stressed to the breaking point
Set adrift without an inkling of what the
future might bring, they become lost souls.
Additionally,
monumental
emotional changes
have to be made
by all parties
involved. The three
bedroom, two
thousand square
foot house which
the parents enjoyed
comfortably is now
filled to capacity
with a daughter
and son-in-law, or a son and daughter-inlaw who have from two to four children.
A whole new way of living has erupted
from the chaos. Suddenly, six to eight
individuals are living under one roof.

An elderly woman called 911 on her
cell phone. She reported that her car
had been broken into.
She was hysterical as she explained
her situation to the dispatcher:
“They’ve stolen the stereo, steering
wheel, brake pedal and even the
accelerator!” she cried. The dispatcher said, “Stay calm. An
officer is on the way.”
A few minutes later, the officer radios
in. “Disregard. She got in the back-seat
by mistake.”
* An older couple was lying in bed one
night. The husband was falling asleep,
but the wife was in a romantic mood and
wanted to talk. She said: “You used to hold my hand when
we were courting.” Wearily he reached
across, held her hand for a second and tried
to get back to sleep. A few moments later she said: “Then you
used to kiss me.” Mildly irritated, he reached
across, gave her a peck on the cheek and
settled down to sleep.
34
Thirty seconds later she said: “Then you
used to bite my neck.” Angrily, he threw back
the blanket and got out of bed.
“Where are you going?” she asked. He
replied, “To get my teeth!”
*Two elderly ladies had been friends for
decades. Over the years, they shared all kinds
of activities and adventures.
Lately, their activities had been limited to
meeting a few times a week to play
cards. They were playing cards when one
Talk about a stressful situation.
What if the parents are on social security?
What if they’re barely able to pay for their
own medications? What if they have to cash
in an IRA to pay for a grandchild’s medical
condition because there is no longer any
health insurance to cover the bills for a
costly procedure?
There are no real answers or a crystal ball.
It becomes an equation; a family equation.
There’s a common bond that will meet
adversity head on and win.
So what, if you have this degree, that
certificate, or a doctorate in this or that

we’ve been friends for

tell me what your
name is.”
Her friend glared at
her. For at least three
minutes she just stared
at her.
Finally she said: “How soon do you need to
know?”
*80-year old Bessie entered the recreation
room at the retirement home. She held her
clenched fist in the air and announced,
“Anyone who can guess what’s in my hand
can have sex with me tonight!!” An elderly gentleman in the rear shouted: “I
know. It’s an elephant?” Bessie thought a minute and replied, “Close
enough.”
*Two elderly women were out driving in a
large car. As they were cruising along, they
came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they went on
through.
The woman in the passenger seat thought,
“I must be losing it. I could have sworn we
just went through a red light.” After a few minutes, they came to another
intersection. The light was also red. Once
again, they ignored the light. The woman in the passenger seat was
almost sure that the light was red, but was
really concerned that she was losing it. She
was getting nervous. At the next intersection, sure enough, the
light was red and they went on through
She turned to the other woman and said:
“Mildred, did you know that we just ran
through three red lights in a row? You could
have killed us!”
Mildred turned to her and said, “Oh! Am I
driving?”

Spice Up Your Brain
March is National Nutrition Month. This
annual campaign focuses on the importance
of making informed food choices.
So this month I’m focusing on spices
because recent research shows some are
good for our brain. These super spices are
surprisingly good sources of antioxidants
(among other things) and are a great
replacement to lower our sugar and salt
intake.
They are basil, garlic, ginger, oregano,
rosemary, thyme, saffron, sage, turmeric
and, what I call, the “Six Super “C”
Spices (see below,) cayenne, chili powder,
cinnamon, cloves, cumin and curry powder.
The Top “C” is cinnamon.
Dr. Oz calls it one of his flavor weapons for
weight loss and advocates using it instead of
sugar on cereals, fruit, and even on meats
and other entrees.
If you are a “foodie” like I am, check out
one of my favorite blogs at www.spicelines.
com. Their recipe for Tacos with Cumin,
Cinnamon and Smoked Pasilla Chiles is to
die for and uses many super spices. I threw in
some turmeric for good “brain” measure.

Mental Minute Lists: “AllSPICE to Za’atar
*”
In one minute, name as many spices as you
can. As a special challenge, name spices in
alphabetic order. “ Allspice, Basil, Cilantro,
...”
(*Ok. Ok. I cheated and surfed the web
to find a “Z” spice. FYI: This condiment is a
mixture of herbs, sesame seeds and salt.)
A Six Super “C” Spice Smell Game: Here’s a
memory game I play with my grandchildren.
They usually win.
Materials: 12 index cards, glue, 6 spices
(starting with “C” is not mandatory. I just
like the alliteration!) Fold 2 index cards. Put
a dollop of glue inside each, sprinkle one of
the spices on the glue, fold, staple shut and
let dry. Repeat to make 6 pairs of matching
‘smell’ cards.
Lay all 12 pairs on the table. Players take
turns choosing 2 cards. If they smell the
same, the other player verifies and the first
player keeps the 2 cards. Play continues until
all cards are matched.
A Brain Exercise Exercise: Cinnamon
Gum Tennis
I can’t walk and chew gum at the same
time! But it looks like I ought to learn.
A recent AARP article, “A Well-Seasoned
Mind,” talks about spices being good for the
brain. “If you want to react faster during
your next tennis game, chew cinnamon gum
because it speeds the rate at which your brain
processes visual cues.”
One reason is cinnamon regulates blood
sugar levels which helps us stay focused.
Since exercise is clearly tied to brain health,
and since tennis is great exercise, I encourage
you all to grab your tennis racket and your
cinnamon gum.

Traveling O B E
What if I told you that you can journey to a
place where time and space do not exist and
you’d never have to leave the comfort of your
home?
Where universal law no longer limits
individual desires? Where your thoughts can
manifest your reality at the speed of light?
These are just some of the claims
experienced by OBE travelers.
I experienced my first OBE in my thirties,
one cold, gloomy afternoon. Deciding to
pamper myself with a hot bath, I proceeded
to set the mood with candles, scented bubbles,
and soothing music.
Unknowingly I stepped into the Fourth
Dimension and what turned out to be one of
the most memorable experiences of my life.
Meditating in the ambiance, unexpectedly, I
found myself observing my body as I took off
to fly over Southern France.
The best way I can describe it is that my soul
was like a kite attached to a silver ribbon that
extended from my temporarily “sleeping”
body. While flying around I was overcome by
a calming peace, joy, and serenity.
March 11
For the first time in my life, I understood
what absolute freedom meant; no thoughts,
no fears, no worries - just being in the
moment with total acceptance of everything.
Every sense was elevated to its highest level
of efficiency and all I wanted was to stay
merged with this warm, loving, enveloping
energy. There was however, one little
obstacle… I couldn’t detach from the silver
ribbon that kept getting in my way.
Lesson number 1: Never cut the chord - it
keeps you earth bound and is the only way
back to your body!
So what is an OBE? Often associated with
Psychic Phenomenon
near death experiences,
out-of-body-experiences
“are characterized by
subjective perceptions
from a vantage point,
outside of one’s physical
body.”
They usually only last
a minute or two and
feel very real, yet the
subjective conception of
the experience feels as
though they last much longer. To me, OBE is
“soul traveling.”
Although some OBEs have no direct
spiritual connections, many times, this is
where souls can experience deep, seeded
lessons or access information that is waiting
to surface. A place where one can tap into the
purest feelings, get spiritual epiphanies, and
yet, this is not recommended for people that
are feeling depressed since it tends to magnify
all emotions.
There are easy, basic breathing-relaxation
techniques that can assist your sub-
consciousness journey effortlessly into
a multidimensional experience. As with
anything, it takes patience and practice.
OBE messages tend to show up in symbols
that may be unrecognizable at first and can
come from any number of sources - passed
relatives, teachers, guides, etc. The joy, clarity
and perhaps even insights will deepen with
time.
Skeptics have tried unsuccessfully to
disprove OBEs. Patients that were declared
dead came back with far too many
unexplainable details. At the same time,
experts are also unable to prove that people
actually leave their bodies to experience
OBEs.

Time Traveler
John Bielun
MARCH 9, 1862
The North Atlantic Squadron roamed
the Chesapeake Bay. It included an
extremely formidable force of the
two 50-gun screw frigates Minnesota
and Roanoke, the two 44-gun sailing
frigates St. Lawrence and Congress
and the 24-gun sailing sloop-of
war Cumberland. They had been
assigned to blockade Richmond and
Norfolk.
Their patrol proved uneventful until
a lookout spied the strangest looking
vessel he had ever seen.
In lieu of the standard upper deck she
bore four inch armor plating a-fit atop a
former Yankee hull, formerly known as the
Merrimack. Her weaponry was horrific.
She carried two 10-inch, 24 9-inch and
14 8-inch cannon protruding from 14 gun
ports. There were four on each side and
three forward and aft; with an iron ram
protruding from her brow.
At 12 knots, the monstrosity streamed
toward the Cumberland. Hundreds of
Union cannon balls ineffectually bounced
off her iron plates before she rammed the
Yankee sloop-of-war and instantly set her
asunder.
The so-called “iron-clad” then set her
sights upon the rest of the squadron and
destroyed the Congress and ran aground
the Minnesota before retiring for the day.
When the Confederate ship, now known as
the Virginia, returned on March 9th, it was
her turn to be surprised. Standing in her
way was what looked like a cheese box on
a raft.
172 feet long and
44 feet wide, the
contraption was
armored from top to
bottom with most of
her deck underwater.
Like the Virginia, she
was steam driven but
unlike her opponent,
she bore only two
cannon: 11-inch
Dahlgrens mounted
side by side on a
mechanical revolving turret.
The ships charged like raging bulls.
They pounded each other with thousands
of cannonade for hours - mostly at short
range. Neither could gain an advantage.
The Virginia had been armed for
disemboweling wooden ships rather than
firing piercing plated shot. As for the
Yankee “iron-clad,” subsequently known
as the “Monitor,” her powder charges were
insufficiently designed to penetrate enemy
armor.
Lost in the smoke of fire, the Monitor
temporarily withdrew from the battle.
Believing that her opponent had given up
the “field,” the Virginia departed for home
to make repairs. When the Monitor returned
to continue the fight, she discovered
her enemy was nowhere to be seen and
naturally assumed that she had won the
battle!
The Virginia (aka the Merrimack) and
the Monitor never fought each other again.
Before years-end, the Virginia was
destroyed by her own side to prevent
capture, and the Monitor sank in high seas.
However, after thousands of years of seawarfare, with the blink of an eye, wooden
fighting ships became a relic of the ages.

“The Uncensored Message That My
Fiancé Asked Me Not to Write…”
Dear friend,
Well, at first, my fiancé asked me not
to write this. We had a big discussion
about it. Finally, she understood what
I was trying to do, and actually helped
me write this letter to you.
Here’s the thing. In my office, most
of the people that come in to see me
tell me they’ve “tried everything.”
They’ve had “every” test, wound up
with huge medical bills, and are still no
better off. Often, they’ve been subjected
to medications that have only served
to temporarily mask symptoms. That’s
not what most people are looking for.
Health, or the lack of it, very often
has simple causes, and very reasonable
corrections. That’s what I’m going to
tell you about. But, before I tell you
more, let me tell you something about
me…
At the time, I’m a student in good ol’
Atlanta, Georgia, and life is good. But
then, it happens…I get rammed by a
pick-up truck and get hurt so badly I can
barely sit up without reaching behind
my own head and lifting up. The pain
in my neck and back gets so intense I
can’t sit in class, concentrate and to be
very frank, it puts me in a bad mood…
and that’s not me!
I’m afraid my dreams of becoming
a doctor are slipping away. I try a few
things and after considering surgery
(that’s the only option, according to
the doctor) I decide against it. But,
there’s more…
A friend of mine convinces me to give
his doctor a try. This new doctor does
an exam, takes some films and then
‘adjusts’ my upper neck (he tells me by
getting my head on straight even my
low-back can get better).
The adjustment doesn’t hurt, there
was no ‘cracking’, it actually feels
good. I get relief, and shortly, I can
turn my head without my body going
with it.
Oh, did I mention that this doctor
is a NUCCA chiropractor? NUCCA
Chiropractic works so well for me
and I’m so impressed with the other
‘miracles’ I see in his office, that I
eventually get specially trained as a
NUCCA chiropractor myself. And that’s
how it happened!”
Back to what my fiancé (at first)
didn’t want me to write. It’s that
NUCCA chiropractic is one of the
biggest “secrets” in health care. The
local tv news even came to
our office. A friend helped
me put the interviews on our
website, www.DrDevin.com.
Few people (relatively,
only 10% have been to a
chiropractor) know about
it. And, many of the rest could
be helped - if they only knew
the true story.
So, I often feel like shouting
it from the mountaintop! Is
that “profess-sional?” Well,
maybe it is, or maybe not. But,
I’ve decided people should know.
For the last decade, people from
Nevada and over 20 other states and
countries have come to see me with
their neck and back problems. They
also come to me with their:
• Headaches
• Migraines
• Chronic pain
• Neck or Back pain
• Shoulder/arm pain
• Whiplash from car accidents
• Neuropathy
• Numbness in limbs
• Athletic injuries
just to name a few…
Here’s what some of your
neighbors had to say:
“I walked in bent-over with a bottle
of Loritab in my pocket, and walked
out without pain!” (J.V. – Las Vegas)
“I recommend him for my own
family, and many patients in pain.”
(Dr. D. Yesnick – Las Vegas)
“I was a 9 on a pain-scale and tried
many other specialists. A friend referred
me to Dr. Luzod. Now I’m a 1 or 2,
he’s saved me a lot of agony and pain!”
(G.G - Henderson)
“I thought my life was pretty much
over because of the pain. After 6-weeks
he turned me right around. He made
a believer out of me!” (D.G.W. Henderson)
Several times a day patients thank
me for helping them with their health
problems. But I can’t really take the
credit. The truth is that I’ve never
healed anyone of anything.
What I do is perform a specific spinal
adjustment to remove nerve pressure,
and the body responds by healing
itself. Of course, all people respond
differently to care, but we get terrific
results. It’s as simple as that!
Exciting Offer - Look, I know
you’re smart. You want to get to the
cause of your problem, and not just
cover it up with drugs.
When you are one of the first 20
people to call and schedule a new
patient exam (by August 30th, 2010)
you’ll receive that entire exam for $37.
That’s with x-rays, paraspinal thermal
imaging….the whole ball of wax - and
there’s no hidden fees.
But, call right away because we expect
to be flooded with calls as this exam
normally costs $180. Again, there’s
only 20 of these slots, so don’t miss out
(by law, this offer excludes Medicare/
Medicaid beneficiaries. We do accept
Medicare patients, the government just
says I can’t give you the big discount).
Great care at a great fee…
Please, I hope that there’s no
misunderstanding about quality of
care just because I have a lower exam
fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee.
My qualifications…I’m a Cum
Laude graduate of Life College who
has wrote his own book called, “Live
to 100…and want to!” I’ve been
entrusted to take care of tiny babies to
pro athletes that you may know.
For the past ten years, I’ve been
taking care of your neighbors in Clark
County. I just have that low exam fee to
help more people who need care.
My assistants are Maria and Lorene
and they are really great people. Our
office is both friendly and warm, and
we try our best to make you feel at
home.
We have a wonderful service, at an
exceptional fee. Our office is called
SPINAL CARE OF NEVADA and it’s
at 8910 W. Tropicana (between I-215
and Durango).
Our phone number is 702.944.
HOPE (4673). Call Maria or Lorene
or me today for an appointment. We
can help you. Thank you and God
Bless.
-Devin Luzod, D.C.
P.S. When accompanied by the first,
I am also offering the second family
member this same examination for
only $17.
P.P.S. Can you imagine not having
to wait 3-hours at a doctor’s office?
Well, your time is as valuable as mine.
That’s why we make every effort to save
people time in the office.
