The extensive network of gossamer mycorrhizal hyphae can increase the root's effective surface area by several orders of magnitude. In fact, several kilometers of hyphae have been found in a liter of soil. The intricately branched arbuscules (arb) are sites of nutrient exchange with the plant cells; the vesicles (ves) are fungal storage bodies; the swelling at the point of fungal entry into the root is termed an appressorium (ap).
