An electric box on Hamilton Avenue was spray painted by an
unknown person.
A man who was intoxicated and causing a disturbance in a parking lot on Nido Drive was arrested.
Although a rock was used to break a glass door of a business on
Curtner Avenue, nothing was taken.
A GPS systems, a backpack and a jacket were taken from a 2004
Nissan on Bascom Avenue.
On Campbell Avenue someone entered a garage and took building materials. Some of the items were later found in a neighbor’s
backyard.
When this 24 year old man caused a disturbance on Bascom
Avenue, he also broken an exterior light fixture. He was booked into
jail.
Two computers were taken from a building on W. Parr Ave.
A backpack containing cash, driver’s license, and credit cards
were taken from a 2000 Toyota Corolla on Harriet Avenue, after a
window was smashed.
Vehicle stops on First St. at Civic Center and at Campbell and
Carlyn yielded two suspects who were DUI. Both were booked into
jail.
On Gale Dr. a GPS system was taken from a 2007 Honda CRV
after the window was smashed.
Hand tools were taken from a 1998 Chevy Blazer on Apricot
after an unknown person smashed the left rear window.
A cab driver refused to drive a woman home because she was so
intoxicated. She was booked into jail.
When several persons “crashed” a party on McCoy, they were
asked to leave. They became upset, breaking items inside the residents and pushed an 18 year old female through the front bay window and also punched a 20 year old female in the face.
A 54 year old woman who were seen driving while drinking a
beer, hit the curb and then stumbled from her vehicle. She was contacted and determined to be DUI and arrested.

Read in the daily paper the
other day that the guy who put
up the billboard complaining
about the cell phone hands off
law is still going to battle to get
the law revoked. So here’s what
I’d suggest: anytime you don’t
like a law, even though it was
passed with your health and
safety in mind, work hard (and
spend your money) to get
changed.
--------Hats off to the CUHSD
schools….the Dramafest they
entertained us with at Heritage
Theatre last week was very special. I saw some drama, some
melodrama, some wonderful
comedy, difficult mime, and
heard some talented voices.
-------Here’s a recent press release
received at our office:
At a recent meeting of the
Santa Clara County Recycling
and Waste Reduction Commission, the Commissioners voted to
set aside the proposed draft ordinance that would have placed a
25 cent fee/tax on paper and plastic retail bags. The Commissioners instead instructed County staff
to develop a timeline and goals
for a public education program
designed to reduce bag litter. The
Commission will review the
staff’s timeline/goals at its April
meeting.
--------I try to keep up with local
musicals and plays. Sometimes
I get so many on my calendar, I
can’t remember the plot of the
one I saw three weeks ago.
Last Sunday I went to Foothill College’s Lohman Theater
to see BatBoy. I had no idea of
what it was about and the show
is so fast-paced, I had trouble
keeping up.
Let me say it’s a terrific
farce that has elements of melodrama, comedy, serious drama,
wonderful gospel singing and a
host of other fortes. I always
know that Director Jay Manley
will give you a good show, but I
think with this one, he was taking a chance! I can say, unhesitatingly that it worked. I went
with the Sunday afternoon “senior” crowd and we loved it, too.
The singing was good (although the music didn’t particularly “get” me) and those who
played triple parts really got a
workout (and gave outstanding
performances). The comedy
gets a little over the top, but by
that time, you are concerned
about the outcome, so you go
along with it.
The male voices seemed
stronger than the women’s but
maybe they had more opportunities to excel (especially
RaMond Thomas in the revival
scene).
Tim Reynolds, as always,
captures you with his beautiful
voice. The finale was only sad
for a couple of seconds, because
although the moral need had
been sated, you weren’t upset
with the way it ended.
Bat Boy (played in top form
by Robert Brewer) is so implausible that you don’t have any
problem going along with the
story. Yes, there was a “moral”
but mostly it was just a good
production and if you’ve a
mind, it’s playing through
March 22 and I don’t have any
trouble recommending it.
If you do go, let me know,
I’d love to hear your take on it.

musical

blare, drums
pound, and colored lights flash
as A Chorus Line explodes on
stage at Westmont High School
beginning Friday, March 20.
According to Westmont’s
drama instructor, Jeff Bengford, most high schools shy
away from this bold Broadway
musical, fearing that the musical is just too difficult, too
challenging and too demanding for high school performers.
Bengford says Westmont
actors have seized the challenge and are daringly dancing
their hearts out to bring this
story to life.
The Pulitzer Prize and
Tony Award winning A Chorus Line leads the unsuspecting audience through the final
grueling audition of the valiant, over dedicated, underpaid, and highly trained chorus dancers.
As the dancers demonstrate
their exceptional skills, a formidable finish awaits.
Westmont’s drama students
have transformed themselves
into triple threats: actors, singers and dancers - risking everything they have to create an
explosive and incomparable
performance.
The show will be staged
Friday and Saturday, March 20
21, and the following weekend,
Thursday, March 26 through

I should have been suspicious
when we paid for parking at HP
Pavilion and it was only $10, Clue
#2 was how very much parking
was available.
I had seen High School Musical on television and while it
wasn’t in competition with the
Sound of Music, it was a sweet
story with some talented youngsters.
It was fortunate for me that I
knew the story, because High
School Musical on Ice really didn’t
in any way replicate that sweetness. One of my companions
didn’t know the story and when we
left, shortly after “singer” Corbin
Bleu started his performance, she
still didn’t know it.
Somehow when you go to see
and “ice show” you expect to see
some fancy maneuvers, some spectacular speeds and turns, There was
nothing very impressive here. Even
the costumes (except that of the
“drama” coach) were mundane.
The promoters undoubted
knew they had a lemon—they
didn’t even set up the traditional
video screens so that the audience
could enjoy close ups of the show.
In this bad economy, it was
wonderful, I thought, that they
offered $15 tickets for opening
night—which still didn’t begin to
fill up the seats.
I suspect the staff of the ice
show had a sense of what the evening was bringing when they attempted to get the crowd to stand
and do “dance steps”. A few of the
age nine to 11 crowd made a feeble
attempt, but the response was so
poor, it was a one-time thing.
This show has gotten a lot of
press (much of it in paid advertising) but I’d suggest they “x-press”
it out of town.

West Valley Light Opera
opens its second production of
its current season, with Cats on
Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m.
with a gala champagne opening at the Saratoga Civic Theater, 13777 Fruitvale Ave., in
Saratoga.
This is an Andrew Lloyd
Webber musical which was
one of the longest-running
productions on Broadway and
winner of eight major Tony
Awards. It is also a Saratoga
premiere. The show has no
dialogue; only song and dance,
the lyrics all coming from T.S.
Eliot’s, Old Possum's Book of
Practical Cats.
The major costumes are
being coordinated by Sue
Howell with the character wigs
provided
by
CatsWigs2Go.com.
Richard Gaetano, one-time
owner of the Gaslighter Theater in Campbell, is designing
the facial make-up for the
show. The junkyard set has
been designed by Stephen C.
Wathen. Performers include
Becky
Brownson,
Robert
Summers, Jeremiah Clauss,
Patty Reinhart, David Saber,
and Tiffany Cesarin .
This production will be
presented weekends through
April 4, 2009, with a special
Saturday matinee on March 21
at 2:30 p.m. Director and choreographer is Bill Starr. Musical director is Jeff M. Hicks
and vocal director is Caroline
Lamcke. Nancy Kwong is the
producer. This is a fun musical

Bluegrass coming to
Heritage Theatre
If you’re a bluegrass fan,
then you may be familiar with
Cherryholmes, a down-home
family of six who have taken
bluegrass to a new level.
Even though they have only
been together since 1999, they
have already been recognized as
the 2005 International Bluegrass
Music Association’s Entertainer
of the Year, and this year have
been nominated for two Grammies -2009 Bluegrass Album of
the Year for their new album
Don’t Believe, and for Country
Instrumental of the Year for
their song Sumatra.
This Nashville-based fam-
ily is headed by Dad and Mom,
Jere and Sandy Cherryholmes,
daughters Cia and Molly, and
sons B.J. and Skip. Together
they play a variety of instruments including guitar, upright
bass, fiddle, mandolin and banjos either as instrumentals or as
accompaniment to their own
songs about heartache, love,
God and even murder.
Cherryholmes will be appearing at Campbell Heritage
Theatre on Friday, March 20 at
8 p.m.

Exhibition of arts/crafts
at History Park continues
She Made It! --- The Tradition of Women’s Arts and Crafts
in Santa Clara Valley, showing at
the Leonard and David McKay
Gallery at the Pasetta House in
History Park in Kelley Park, is
being held over through this
summer of 2009.
“This has been a very popular
show,” said Sarah Puckitt, Curator of Art and Photography at
History San Jose as well as curator of She Made It! “The beautiful
artifacts in this exhibit tell stories
from the past that are still being
told today, and it is clear that it
resonates with those who have
visited the exhibit.”
The She Made It! exhibit
demonstrates just how far we
have come, and explores the transitions of women’s craft-making.
The exhibit displays artifacts of
embroidery, needlework, and
quilting that some might think of
as a lost art. The exhibit is open
weekends 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
will run through August 16.
Mostly culled from History
San Jose’s collection, the exhibit
includes quilts and samplers,
clothing and accessories, baskets
and hair work, many of which are
on display for the first time.
These items span 200 years of
production, beginning with Native
American
baskets.
While most items on display
are 19th and early 20th century,
the exhibit also touches on the
late 20th century with contemporary artists and designers.
The San Jose State Textile
program was once a component of
the Home Economics department.
Students were instructed in clothing and fabric design; artifacts
from this program will be on display. Although this department
dissolved in 1987, instruction in
weaving and textile arts can still be
found on campus through the
School of Art & Design.
The most contemporary example in this exhibit is a woven
piece by SJSU Art & Design Faculty and head of the Textiles program, Consuelo J. Underwood.
Her contribution to the exhibit
is entitled Zewa Sisters from
2000, and is loom-woven, silkscreened, and embroidered piece
of silk, corn husk, and metallic
thread, and addresses her own
heritage of Mexican and indigenous Indian descent.

CCOC is one of ten high
schools in Santa Clara and
Santa Cruz counties that are
eligible to participate in the
Grove Scholarship program.
Eleven of the students who
received scholarships applied
through CCOC while seven
other students applied through
their home high school.
CCOC’s Scholarship winners
come from 12 different high
schools and represent 13 CCOC
programs. An additional 14
students who won a Grove
Scholarship take a CCOC ROP
class at their home high school.
CCOC--a unit of MetroED-provides career-technical education for more than 35 high
schools in six Silicon Valley
school districts: Campbell Union High School District, East
Side Union High School District, Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint
Union High School District,
Milpitas Unified School District, San Jose Unified School
District, and Santa Clara Unified School District.
Students attend CCOC for
half of their school day and the
other half of the day; they attend their home high school.
The Grove Foundation received close to 160 applications
from eligible schools in the San
Jose and Santa Cruz area. Out
of that, 74 students were
Awarded scholarships Jaime
Kemmer, Program Associate for
the Grove Foundation, said.
While in college, Grove
Scholars must maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average,
take a full course load, attend
Grove Scholars events and program offerings, and continue
their college career path. The
scholarship is for up to $4,000
as determined by the student’s
education plan.
CCOC Grove Scholars include: Olivia Fields from Branham Hill High School; Nicole
Walker from Saratoga High
School; and Ariella Newton
from Westmont High School.

on Downtown Campbell

Mary Todd Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln chose for
his cabinet members the three
most prominent politicians who
ran against him for president,
Bates, Salmon and Seward. He
chose Seward as his Secretary of
State, whom many Republicans
expected to be president.
Mary Lincoln, for all her
complexities which were many,
and which made some people
wonder how he could stand her,
was none-the-less fiercely loyal
to her husband, warmly responded to his kindness and
generosity, and had limitless
belief in his good judgment.
Her loyalty and pride led her
to dislike intensely anyone she
felt was challenging her husband. That included the Sewards. In the White House years,
Lincoln spent a good number of
evenings with the Seward family
rather than his own. Protocol
required Mary to invite Seward’s wife Frances and her
daughter to the White House,
but Mary snubbed them by
quickly leaving the room.
Mary was born in Kentucky
to Eliza and Robert Todd. She
had a good education, but was
devastated by her mother’s
death when she was seven and
her father’s remarriage. Her
family were Kentucky settler
aristocracy, and as she grew up,
she enjoyed the social life in
Lexington.
At 21, she moved to her married sister’s home in Springfield,
Illinois, where she met Lincoln
(“a pennyless nobody” in his
own words), and was deeply
impressed by this tall, lanky
young man, who was uncomfortable with women.
Mary was described by people who knew her, as intelligent,
attractive, vivacious but flighty,
a charming hostess and an excellent conversationalist. But there
was an inner steel, which was
first displayed in her early married years, when the Lincolns
had to live much more simply
than she had experienced growing up in Kentucky.
Some admired and adored
her, some did not. Lincoln’s
longtime law partner William H.
Herndon and Mary maintained a
distant but respectful relationship during the 21 Springfield
years, but their relations became
bitter in later years, as Herndon
gathered material for his biography of Lincoln, The True Story
of a Great Life, and gave published lectures about his findings.
On the occasion of a major
White House state dinner, as the
Lincolns’ son Willie, was seriously ill, Mary left the festivities
often to go to his bedside. When
he died a few days later, Mary’s
personality changed permanently.
On July 21, 1861 the catastrophe of the first Battle of Bull
Run, (First Manassas) near
Washington, caused the city to
be flooded with injured Union
soldiers. Every possible space
was used for their care, the patent and other government offices, churches, meeting halls
and private homes.
Mary, overcome with grief at
the death of her beloved son,
rediscovered the steel in herself.
Surmounting her grief, she visited horribly injured soldiers in
their makeshift wards, sat by
their cots, talked to them, and
wrote letters home for them.
One sick soldier didn’t know
who the lady was until his
mother wrote back telling him
his letter was signed by Mary
Lincoln.
Mary bitterly contested
many statements in Herndon’s
book until the end of her life.
She died in 1882 at the age of
64.

prompted them to say what they did.
It was the urgency of the issue, the passion of the speaker’s belief in
the rightness and aptness of what he declaimed that elevated later not
only his words, but himself, in the estimation of his fellows.
Only the long perspective of passing time can convey greatness to
thought, so that we must not give undue pause to what we say, except
that our words be fitting to the issue and the occasions, or few of us
would say anything at all. And the world would scarce echo with any
sounds, except the grunting of beasts and the droning of insects.

The Gettysburg occasion was the dedication of the Soldier’s National Cemetery four-and-a-half months after the battle of Gettysburg.
A Whig party politician from Massachusetts, Edward Everett—an
acclaimed orator—spoke for two hours, non-stop. President Abraham
Lincoln spoke two minutes. And Everett conceded that what the president had said was much the greater than what he had said.
Lincoln’s speech that began: “Four score and seven years ago--” was
my copybook exercise in penmanship in early grade school. I wonder if
that is still so today?

The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in the adjoining
county and he asked me a rhetorical question, "Why didn't we have a
drug problem when you and I were growing up? " I replied: I had a
drug problem when I was young:
I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals.
I was drug to family reunions and community socials no matter the
weather.
I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults.
I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie,
brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the
teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything
that was asked of me.
I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I
uttered a profane four-letter word. I was drug out to pull weeds in mom's
garden and flowerbeds and cockleburs out of dad's fields.
I was drug to the homes of family, friends, and neighbors to help out some
poor soul, who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop
some firewood; and, if my mother had ever known that I took a single dime
as a tip for this kindness, she would have drug me back to the woodshed.
Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my behavior in everything
I do, say, and think.
They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today's children
had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place.

persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or
both, of: JACK W. SNIDER
A Petition for Probate has been filed by: Randolph W. Snider
in the Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara.
The petition for probate requests that: Randolph W. Snider be
appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of
the decedent.
The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be
admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for
examination in the file kept by the court.
The petition requests authority to administer the estate under the
Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will
allow the personal representative to take many actions without

Agreement with Kakoli Banerjee relating to providing technical assistance and evaluation services for substance abuse programs,
increasing the maximum financial obligation by $30,381.01 to $130,381, following approval by County Counsel as to form and

* 16. Approved the Project, adopted plans and specifications, and authorized advertisement of contract documents for the Communications Infrastructure Cabling for Valley Health Center at Milpitas Project.
* 17. Considered recommendations relating to Professional Services Contract (PSC) for architecture and engineering services,
and took the following actions:
a. Approved delegation of authority to Chief Executive Officer, Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System (SCVHHS), or
designee, to execute Ninth Amendment to PSC with Cuschieri Horton Architects, increasing the maximum compensation limit
(MCL) by $2,000,000 to $4,500,000, and extending the term through June 30, 2015, following approval by County Counsel as to
form and legality, and approval by the Office of the County Executive. Delegation of authority shall expire on June 30, 2015.
b. Authorized the Director, SCVHHS Facilities, to be the Owner's Authorized Representative to execute Project Agreements for
services during the term of the PSC and to perform other administrative functions pursuant to the PSC, following approval by
County Counsel as to form and legality, and approval by the Office of the County Executive.
c. Authorized the Director, SCVHHS Facilities, to approve Amendments to the PSC, extending the term up to six months and
increasing the MCL by up to $100,000, if necessary, following approval by County Counsel as to form and legality, and approval
by the Office of the County Executive.
18. Considered recommendations relating to award of the Design-Build Contract for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (VMC)
Seismic Safety Project Bed Building 1, and took the following actions:
a. Adopted Request for Proposals documents (plans and specifications) and ratified Addendum Nos. 1-7.
b. Found that the particular material, product, or service designated specifically by a brand or trade name described in the Sole
Source Items list be used in order to match other products in use at the VMC campus or to obtain a necessary item that is only
available from one source.
c. Awarded a Design-Build contract in accordance with the Uniform Public Contract Code Act section 20133 to Turner Construction Company in the amount of $290,562,901, with a construction time of 1,141 calendar days.
d. Approved encumbrance of an additional $29,437,099 as a Supplemental Work Allowance (SWA) for a total encumbrance of
$320,000,000.
e. Authorized the Director, Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System Facilities, to issue change orders, as necessary,
against the SWA and to approve modifications to the contract accordingly, including modifications to the bonding requirement and
other contract provisions that will save Project funds without impairing the County's best interests.
f. Approved Extension Agreement and related documents extending terms and conditions of the existing Project Labor Agreement
for the Valley Health Centers at Sunnyvale, Gilroy, and Milpitas, with modification, to the Bed Building 1 Project.
* 19. Considered recommendations relating to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Seismic Safety Project, and took the following actions:
a. Accepted staff report on the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for New Construction version 2.2 building
rating system established by the U.S. Green Building Council, and the evaluation of renewable and/or alternate energy sources
for the design of Bed Building 1.
b. Accepted staff recommendation to pursue the attainment of a LEED Gold rating for the Bed Building 1 Project.

2. Expansion of the current policy to prohibit smoking in or within 30 feet surrounding the outside perimeter of all County owned
and leased facilities where the County is the sole occupant, and collaborate with those landlords of leased facilities where the
County is one of several occupants, to encourage the adoption of the policy at those facilities.
3. Reaffirmation of the current policy to prohibit smoking in all County vehicles.
4. Inclusion of other possible areas, as appropriate, such as contracts and leases, including personal service contracts, where
smoking cessation could be influenced.
